Steel
========

Heatran is a key Pokemon for Steel teams thanks to Flash Fire's ability to absorb Fire-type attacks such as V-create from Victini. Heatran has excellent typing with decent defensive stats, which contributes to its good special bulk. Heatran also has access to a variety of utility options; Toxic and Lava Plume allow it to cripple bulky Pokemon such as Mantine, Galarian Corsola, and Rotom-W, Taunt allows it to block utility moves like Leech Seed, Stealth Rock, and Recover from slower Pokemon such as Celesteela, Galarian Corsola, and Toxapex, and Stealth Rock lets Ferrothorn dedicate its slot to Spikes. However, Heatran's Fire typing compounds Steel teams' natural weaknesses; it stacks the Ground-type weakness for its team against foes like Garchomp and creates a weakness against Water-types such as Barraskewda. Heatran also has mediocre Speed and is forced to switch out against fast physical threats such as Urshifu-R, Barraskewda, Excadrill, Landorus-T, and Garchomp. Heatran lacks proper recovery and is reliant on Leftovers, which directly affects its longevity during the battle as it doesn't like taking hits from other Pokemon.

[SET]
name: Specially Defensive (Steel)
move 1: Lava Plume
move 2: Earth Power
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Stealth Rock / Taunt
item: Leftovers
ability: Flash Fire
nature: Calm
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Lava Plume is Heatran's most spammable STAB attack that comes with a 30% chance to burn the foe, which can be used to cripple Toxapex. Earth Power is used mainly for opposing Heatran and hits Toxapex as well as Electric-types such as Alolan Raichu and Tapu Koko. Toxic cripples foes that Heatran cannot reliably beat, like Mantine, Slowbro, and Porygon2. Heatran's excellent typing and natural bulk make it one of the best Stealth Rock setters, as it forces a lot of switches. However, Taunt allows it to be an effective stallbreaker if another teammate is carrying Stealth Rock. A specially defensive spread with a Calm nature gives Heatran a better matchup against foes such as Tornadus-T and Latios. Leftovers mitigates Heatran's lack of natural recovery. Flash Fire is the preferred ability, as it allows Heatran to absorb Fire-type attacks.

Heatran's presence is appreciated by every Steel-type, as it is the only reliable answer to Fire-types such as Victini. Ferrothorn is one of Heatran's best teammates; Heatran can take Fire-type attacks for Ferrothorn, while Ferrothorn can take Water-type attacks for it and threaten Water-types with Power Whip. In addition, Ferrothorn's Spikes synergizes with Lava Plume and Toxic to accrue chip damage on foes, while Taunt from Heatran prevents Defog from foes like Mantine and maintains Spikes. Celesteela, Skarmory, and Corviknight all make good partners for Heatran, as their typing allows them to switch into Ground-type coverage directed at Heatran. Moreover, Celesteela heals Heatran with Leech Seed and helps against checks such as Swampert, Skarmory provides Spikes and Whirlwind for passive damage while Heatran deters Defog with Taunt, and Corviknight's Pressure allows the duo to make better progress against bulky teams. Excadrill removes entry hazards that harm Heatran, as it already has limited recovery. Moreover, Excadrill can absorb Electric-type attacks for Heatran from foes like Choice Specs Tapu Koko, check opposing Heatran, and, with a Choice Scarf set, clean weakened teams. Aegislash takes care of Fighting-type coverage such as Focus Blast from Tapu Lele and Alakazam. Moreover, Toxic + Substitute Aegislash contributes to Heatran's stallbreaking. Bisharp helps Heatran stallbreak with Knock Off, removing crucial items such as Heavy-Duty Boots from Mantine and Pelipper and Eviolite from Porygon2 and Galarian Corsola. Bisharp also contributes to Psychic- and Ghost-type matchups effectively by threatening faster Pokemon such as Victini, Latios, Gengar, and Dragapult with Sucker Punch and getting free Knock Offs against slower Pokemon such as Slowbro, Galarian Slowking, and Galarian Corsola. Assault Vest Melmetal can take a few hits from specially offensive Pokemon that threaten Heatran, such as Tapu Lele. Calm Mind Jirachi can take advantage of Pokemon that Heatran cannot reliably beat, such as Toxapex and Mantine, while also taking on Dragon-types like Kyurem and Hydreigon.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============

Heatran may opt for a trapper set by using Magma Storm over Lava Plume, allowing it to beat some of its checks such as Toxapex and Galarian Slowking with the help of Taunt.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-types**: Ground-types are generally bulky enough to take one or two hits from Heatran and OHKO it in return. Garchomp and Gastrodon especially resist Lava Plume and easily force out Heatran, but Ground-types need to be careful of status from Lava Plume and Toxic.

**Water-types**: Heatran's Water-type weakness is easily exploited by Water-types, as faster threats force it out, and Heatran cannot reliably break through bulkier Water-types. However, Toxapex is threatened by Earth Power, while Mantine and Swampert must watch out for Toxic.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types such as Keldeo and Terrakion threaten to KO Heatran with their STAB moves. However, Terrakion needs to be wary of a burn from Lava Plume.

**Revenge Killers**: Faster Pokemon such as Garchomp, Barraskewda, and Excadrill easily revenge kill Heatran with their coverage or STAB moves.

* Heatran is a key Pokemon for Steel teams thanks to Flash Fire's ability to absorb Fire-type attacks such as V-create from Victini.
* Heatran has excellent typing with a lot of resistances, this makes Heatran naturally bulky [Its resistances have nothing to do with its natural bulk, would mention that its decent defensive stats attribute towards being naturally bulky.] without any investments.
* Heatran has access to a variety of utility options; Toxic and Lava Plume allows Heatran to cripple bulky Pokemon such as Mantine, Toxapex, [Neither of Toxic and Lava Plume cripples Toxapex, remove the Toxapex mention or replace with a different example.] and Rotom-W, Taunt allows Heatran to block status utility moves like Recover, Leech Seed, and Strength Sap from slower Pokemon such as Toxapex, Celesteela, and Galarian Corsola, and running Stealth Rock on Heatran allows Ferrothorn to dedicate its slot to Spikes.
* Heatran's Fire typing is terrible defensively, it stacks the Ground-type weakness for its team against foes like Garchomp and creates a weakness against Water-type Pokemon such as Barraskewda and Dracovish.
* Heatran has mediocre Speed and physical bulk [This isn't necessary, its defense and spd are the same.], therefore, is forced to switch out against fast physical threats such as Urshifu-R, Barraskewda, Excadrill, Landorus-T, and Garchomp.
* Heatran lacks a proper recovery and is reliant on Leftovers, which directly affects its longevity during the battle as it doesn't like taking hits too often from the aforementioned threats.

[SET COMMENTS]

* Lava Plume is Heatran's most spammable STAB attack that comes with a 30% chance to burn the foe.
* Earth Power is used mainly for the opposing Heatran and hits to Toxapex as well as Electric-types like Tapu Koko and Alolan Raichu.
* Toxic is used to cripple foes that Heatran cannot reliably beat like Mantibe Mantine, Slowbro, and Porygon2.
* Heatran's excellent typing and natural bulk make it one of the best Stealth Rock setters as it forces a lot of switches. However, Taunt allows it to be an effective wallbreaker stallbreaker with the help of Taunt if another teammate is carrying Stealth Rock.
[Make a mention about EV investment and Calm nature. Also make a mention about Leftovers.]

* Heatran's presence is appreciated by every Steel-type Pokemon, as Heatran is the only reliant reliable answer to Fire-types such as Victini.
* Ferrothorn is one of Heatran's best teammates; Heatran can take Fire-type attacks for Ferrothorn while Ferrothorn can take Water-type attacks for it, Ferrothorn's access to Spikes enables good passive damage with the combination of Lava Plume burn and Toxic poison, and Taunt can block Defog from foes like Mantine to maintain Spikes.
* Skarmory, Celesteela, and Corviknight all make a good partner for Heatran as their typing allows them to take switch-in to Ground-type coverage redirected at Heatran. Moreover, Skarmory can provide Spikes and Whirlwind for passive damage while Taunt from Heatran deters Defog, Celesteela can heal provide passive recovery for Heatran with Leech Seed and beat helps against Heatran's common checks such as Swampert, and Corviknight's Pressure allows the duo to make better progress against bulky teams.
* Excadrill removes entry hazards that harm Heatran, as it already has limited recovery. Moreover, Excadrill can absorb Electric-type attacks for Heatran. Excadrill can check the opposing Heatran and with a Choice Scarf set, it can clean weakened teams.
* Aegislash takes care of Fighting-type coverage such as Focus Blast from Tapu Lele and Close Combat from Urshifu formes. Moreover, Aegislash that carries Toxic and Substitute contributes to Heatran's wallbreaking stallbreaking capabilities.
* Bisharp helps Heatran with wallbreaking stallbreaking with Knock Off, removing crucial items such as Heavy-Duty Boots from Mantine and Pelipper and Eviolite from Porygon2 and Galarian Corsola. Bisharp also contributes to Psychic- and Ghost-type matchups effectively.
* Melmetal is another partner that enhances Heatran's breaking potential with its powerful Double Iron Bash. If it is running Assault Vest, Melmetal can also take a few hits from specially offensive Pokemon that threaten Heatran, such as Keldeo [Use a different example since AV doesn't help against Secret Sword.] and Tapu Lele.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Heatran may opt for a trapper set by using Magma Storm over Lava Plume, allowing it to beat some of its checks such as Porygon2 Toxapex [Trace P2 just copies Flash Fire and is immune to Magma Storm.] and Galarian Slowking with the help of Toxic and Taunt.
* Heatran may use an offensive set with either Choice Specs or Choice Scarf to surprise opponents, but offensive Heatran variants are underwhelming because Heatran has no issues breaking through defensive cores with its standard set, and locking itself to a move will provide opposing Heatran a free switch in a mirror matchup. [Add that even with a Choice Scarf, its mediocre speed tier leaves it outsped by almost every other Choice Scarfer in the tier and some non-scarf users like Zeraora and Dragapult.]

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-types**: Ground-types are generally bulky to take one or two hits from Heatran and OHKO it in return. Garchomp and Gastrodon especially resists Lava Plume and forces out Heatran easily, but every ground type needs to be careful with Lava Plume burns and Toxic poisoning.

**Water-types**: Heatran's Water-type weakness is easily exploited by Water-types, as faster threats force it out and Heatran cannot reliably break through bulkier Water-types. However, Toxapex is threatened by Earth Power and Mantine and Swampert must watch out for Toxic.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types such as Keldeo and Terrakion can easily gain upper hand against Heatran and threaten it with KO with their respective STAB moves. However, they need to watch for burns from Lava Plume and Toxic poison.

**Revenge Killers**: Faster Pokemon such as Garchomp, Barraskewda, and Excadrill can easily revenge kill Heatran with their respective coverage or STAB moves.

Heatran has excellent typing with decent defensive stats, which contributes to Heatran being naturally bulky without any investments.
- would use this line to talk about how its good natural bulk and defensive typing contribute to why its spd set is so bulky. this line doesn't make sense atm given the only set is spd
- instead of saying its fire typing is terrible defensive maybe say like it only compounds steel natural weakness to ground types and adds extra weaknesses. while its true its fire typing doesnt add much defensively, it is probably the reason why it has flash fire so i would word it differently, if that makes sense
- generally those aforementioned threats have the ability to ohko heatran, so maybe don't use them as an example of what it can take hits from

[set comments]
- give an example of a foe that heatran might try to fish for a burn with bz of lava plume
A spread in maximized EV and Special Defense and a Calm nature is used to benefit best from Heatran as a special tank
- fix the sentence to also talk about hp and give an example of a foe it can take on because of its special bulk, like latias or torn-t
- would also mention ferrothorn can take on water-types with power whip for heatran
- make this the order for the flying types section steela > skarm > corv
- mention choice specs tapu koko when talking about electric types that excadrill takes on for heatran. also excadrill doesnt need choice scarf to take on heatran since they are slower naturally
- aegislash generally has a tough time vs both urshifu formes so i would use a different example, especially since urshifu-s might be banned
- add more to the line about bisharp helping vs ghost and psychic, give examples of what it beats
Melmetal is another partner that enhances Heatran's breaking potential with its powerful Double Iron Bash.
- rephrase this, melmetals attacks don't affect heatrans breaking potential
- add calm mind jirachi as a teammate, its ability to take on dragons like kyurem+hydreigon and poisons like toxapex is nice for heatran

[other options]
- i would remove specs/scarf as they really arent seen past 1400 on mono ladder and isn't used enough for even oo

[checks and counters]
- keldeo doesnt really care about a lava plume burn
