Project Hidden Gems Ladder Tournament (week 4: Kyurem-White, Lunala and Alcremie)

Sorry for the long wait, a combination of busy with other things and general burnout from VGC. But now I'm back, ready to start Week 3. Congratulations to Clipperz for getting to Gold rank with Palkia.

Platinum: 1500 points

Being able to counter one of the most threatening Pokemon around in Calyrex-S is certainly a good USP to have - however, Yveltal has other uses beyond this. It can pull off a Dynamax sweeping set as well as anything else thanks to STAB Max Airstream boosting Speed and STAB Dark Aura boosted Max Darkness lowering the foes Sp. Def. It can also threaten the VenuCoal core.
Possible sets
Good teammates: Lightning Rod users are always helpful to get around Regieleki, Whimsicott sets Tailwind and can trigger possible Weakness Policy with a weak Moonblast, Landorus-T deals with Zacian, provides Intimidate support and can Earthquake without remorse.

Silver: 1300 points
Gold: 1400 points
Platinum: 1500 points

A fantastic check to the almighty Zacian is always welcome, and with Necrozma-DM's weird awkward speed tier it can abuse both Tailwind and Trick Room, the latter it can set up itself. Huge Attack, great bulk and Prism Armor make it a great Weakness Policy abuser, though there are other items it can use it good effect too (good old Life Orb, even Assault Vest). Great Dynamax abuser too, as Max Steelspike and Quake both boost its bulk.
Do remember that max Mindstorm coming from Photon Geyser will always be special.
Possible sets
Good teammates: Urshifu-S can proc Weakness Policy and deal with Calyrex-S and other Dark types, while Necrozma can deal with Flying and Fairy types. Ditto for Grimmsnarl, and it also provides priority Screens and speed control with Scary Face / Thunder Wave. Mienshao smacks Incineroar, not fearing Intimidate thanks to Inner Focus and can even provide Coaching and Ally Switch support. Tapu Fini keeps away status, beats Incineroar and can keep it healthy with Heal Pulse.

Name: HGLTW3P3
Bronze: 1200 points
Silver: 1300 points
Gold: 1400 points
Platinum: 1500 points

An Intimidate deterrent is always helpful with Incineroar all over the place. In addition to punishing Intimidators, Zapdos-G can make a potent sweeper itself with both Max Airstream and Knuckle helping it out in this role. It can provide team support with Coaching and Quick Guard, and (on paper at least) having something that can check all of Incineroar, Rillaboom and Venusaur (3 of the most common mons) is always a good thing.
Possible sets
Good teammates: physical attacker in general like Zacian and Groudon really appreciate its help, both with Defiant and Coaching. Incineroar provides a counter to Calyrex-S and Dragapult which give the chocobo trouble, Lightning Rod users like Raichu and Togedemaru are always useful (both pack Fake Out and Helping Hand too).

You have 40 battles to hit the goal. Deadline is Sunday 19th December, then we'll start again first Saturday after New Years. Good luck everyone!

Once again, sorry for the delay.

this wasn't my last battle, it's battle before it since in my last battle the opponent forfeited because of my mon woke up in one turn of sleep lmao. and the battle i posted is what should've been my last battle if it weren't for the fact that:

#ladderingisabitch
https://pokepast.es/64f8c6813a4b8233 team i used to reach bronze by Bingjie. Not certain if i'm going to use this to try to reach silver yet, but i'll see by experimenting on my main acc.

Final reached: Bronze

so close, yet so far. i was so close to reaching silver, but alas, my poor decision making and unfortunate crits caused me to come here. never to reach silver, and disappointed yveltal.
speaking of yveltal, man its good. especially as a counter against the calys and necrozmas. i mainly played yveltal as the late game cleaner, but i'm sure there's other amazing ways to utilize yveltal in a team!
https://pokepast.es/ac99e9bc4d38e5ae team is by NielVGC and was mainly a Weezing team by Lexicon and Kunal. Will be doing Zapdos G next!

Galarian Zapdos
Well shit i didn't even last long in bronze lmao and my account went poof :psycry:
it's the fact it was hard to find a team for me to use easily that i wasn't able to do the birb justice. even so, i think it's a great mon with its defiant ability cucking intimidate and other stuff. though its really frail. downsides of big boi attackers indeed. i dont think ill be doing necrozma dm because ill be too busy to play showdown so uhuhu

Bronze

Damn - I spent more time teambuilding than actually laddering up. However, it's going well so far! I got my first medal with the following team built around Zapdos-Galar + Necrozma Dusk Mane. It wasn't intended that I built two gems into the team - the two just synergyze very well together!

20211216_162206.jpg

• I am not proud of the seventh battle tho but sometimes that's how it goes. Sometimes you gotta rely on the Double Protect, right?

• However, I found a match that showed how well Necrozma can perform - enjoy!

Silver

Unfortunately, I didn't perform as well as I would have liked but at least I got to the Silver-Medal! However, because of the matches I've lost, I was able to make some changes to improve the team again. Having Snarl > Taunt on Incin and Eerie Impulse > Volt Switch on Rotom improves my Yveltal as well as Dialga Matchup (basically threatenning special Mons that I can't beat with Incin/Amoonguss/Lando alone.

• You know when you are in a way of a tilt that you just click for the fastest out and don't look for the best out? This replay happened when I was in that state. Nothing special but I got over the threshold.

The team is utilizing some nice synergies as well as cheese to get through the ladder. When I'm done, I'll provide an in-depth analysis about that. The team will probably change until then but either way I am glad how it performs right now!

this team was built back in s8 with the goats Yourwelcomethanku poogang pLOpy13 and avocado73

Imo ndm is kind of a meme, but I still think this team is cool and showcases ndm well.

ndm is actually a pretty versatile mon, as it pairs well with both airstream and trick room due to its speed stat. Its a solid middle ground that allows it to abuse both pretty effectively. It matches up really well into ice rider and zacian since it can take their stabs and fire back with max quake and steelspike. Unfortunately, its matchups into kyogre, shadow rider and to a degree groudon are pretty horrendous, but that's where the rest of the team comes in. The team has both thundurus and mimikyu in order to force the opponent into guessing which form of speed control will be used to support ndm. The Thundurus + ndm lead proved to be very effective in practice as thundurus could dissuade intimidates because of defiant and boost ndm's speed with max airstream. It also carried brutal swing to activate ndm's weakness policy. This meant that both pokemon could max, further complicating the guessing game. One of the big advantages of ndm over the probably better solgaleo is ndm's access to swords dance. Its able to boost its attack as thundurus boosts its speed, making it less reliant on weakness policy. Other members of the team such as rillaboom and togekiss can also assist ndm with setting up. Wish I could've taken ndm to platinum I got rng'd out of games for 1500s twice.

In conclusion: ndm still sucks lmao

Hi want to go for yveltal. Tried to build myself a team around it: https://pokepast.es/67897375ab4e6edc

Name: HGLTW3P1 Yaya

Reached: Bronze https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8vgc2021series11-1474473602-vz6roqad1ex0ukooeho6g4hlh2i9h3zpw
Was pretty close in hitting silver as well but last 3 games were L's due to bad plays and didn't stay long in Bronze. Tried to make Dark Aura + Urshifu work but didn't suceed much. However I believe it is a good attacking combo and Yveltal in general is pretty fun to use having access to Snarl and Foul Play, while also being decent for Dmax.

OK, hope you all had a happy holiday, hope 2022 will be a better year than 2021. Here are the latest Hidden Gems:

In theory, snowqueen'sicedragon is capable of checking a lot of Pokemon - Groudon, Kyogre, Rillaboom, Yveltal, Venusaur etc. Base 170 Special Attack is certainly nothing to sneeze at. It also has perfect neutral coverage with Freeze-Dry, Earth Power and Draco Meteor. It can even use Dynamax reasonably well, since max Wyrmwind and Quake boost its bulk, while max Hailstorm lets it screw with weather teams. There's a number of items it can run well: Choice Scarf lets you get the jump on Zacian and OHKO with a sun boosted Fusion Flare, Life Orb is always nice for the power, Assault Vest works well with its nice bulk, Safety Goggles lets it wreck Amoongus while Weakness Policy lets it hit incredibly hard. That said, being deathly afraid of one of the best Pokemon in the format in Zacian does let it down.

Name: HGLTW4P1
Bronze: 1100 Points
Silver: 1200 Points
Gold: 1300 Points
Platinum: 1400 Points

Is there any reason to use this over Shadow Calyrex? Well it is much bulkier, especially with Shadow Shield. It has more support options, like Wide Guard and Trick Room. It can also wreck a lot of the Dark types that make Calyrex-Shadow cry - Meteor Beam hits Incineroar and Yveltal hard, while Moonblast chunks Grimmsnarl. Its speed tier might seem awkward, but it can abuse all forms of Speed control, like Tailwind, Max Airstream and Trick Room.

Platinum: 1400 points

The cute meringue fairy has a move Whimsicott and Grimmsnarl could only dream of: Decorate. Giving your partner a free Weakness Policy is a huge boon that can turn any offensive Pokemon into a complete monster. It also has a great ability in Sweet Veil: while Sleep isn't the most common strategy, it can absolutely ruin your team if left unchecked. Helping Hand is also nice support. As Zygarde taught us in S/M, one move can take a Pokemon to viability: will that be enough for Alcremie?

Name: HGLTW4P3
Bronze: 1150 points
Silver: 1250 points
Gold: 1350 points
Platinum: 1450 points

Best of luck everybody! As with before, you have 40 battles to make the rank.

did you seriously just say kyurem white and lunala are considered worse by the playerbase than ndm

this team was made by vishy, who piloted it to 20th place in the players cup qualifiers. his team report can be found here

Overall kyu-w is solid, it has a good matchup into both weathers and can bypass pretty much all of its checks with speed control because of its monstrous special attack. Maybe it'll be better in s12 who knows?
