VGC 21 Ho-Oh

[OVERVIEW]

Ho-Oh is one of the bulkiest attackers in the metagame, with good defenses further backed by Regenerator and a decent defensive typing. Its access to a powerful Max Airstream allows it to tear teams apart quickly while hardly taking damage in return. Because of the power and Speed boost of its Max Airstream, it boasts positive matchups against many common threats such as Zacian-C, Venusaur, and Calyrex-I. Ho-Oh often finds itself in situations where it is the last Pokemon standingand is still able to win. However, its lack of ways to boost its damage output outside of Weakness Policy often leaves it crippled by Intimidate. By nature of its type combination, it also greatly fears metagame staples like Kyogre, Regieleki, and Landorus-T, all of which carry powerful super effective attacks to hit Ho-Oh.

[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Sacred Fire
move 2: Brave Bird
move 3: Earthquake / Recover
move 4: Protect / Recover
item: Weakness Policy / Life Orb
ability: Regenerator
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Sacred Fire is very useful to hit various Steel-types like Zacian-C, Kartana, and Solgaleo. Its ability to frequently burn other physical attackers like Groudon and Landorus-T is extremely useful for preserving Ho-Oh's longevity.

* Brave Bird hits Kyogre incredibly hard while also allowing Ho-Oh to boost its speed with Max Airstream, outspeeding Calyrex-S and Zacian-C after one boost.

* Earthquake is useful for chunking Incineroar and Regieleki as well as boosting Ho-Oh's already massive Special Defense with Max Quake. Recover is an alternative option to Protect, allowing Ho-Oh to stall out opposing Dynamax turns or heal quickly after gaining Speed boosts through Max Airstream.

* Due to Ho-Oh's weaknesses to common Electric-, Rock-, and Water-type attacks, it makes an excellent user of Weakness Policy, the only real option it has to boost its Attack. Life Orb can provide a smaller boost instantly, but this comes at the cost of Ho-Oh's HP and doesn't do much to make it more threatening against its poor matchups.

Ho-Oh can also make use of a bulkier set centered around outlasting its foes. However, these sets have significantly less offensive pressure and often require the support of teammates like Raichu. Safety Goggles can be used to turn Ho-Oh into a complete counter to Amoonguss and Venusaur, and resistance berries such as Passho or Wacan can temporarily keep it safe from Kyogre or Thundurus. Iron Head is a possible niche option solely for boosting Ho-Oh's Defense with Max Steelspike.

[OVERVIEW]

Ho-Oh is one of the bulkiest attackers in the metagame, further backed by Regenerator and a decent defensive typing. Its access to powerful Max Airstreams allow it to tear teams apart quickly while hardly taking damage in return. Additionally, it boasts positive matchups against many common threats such as Zacian-C, Venusaur, and Calyrex-I. It often finds itself in situations where it is the last Pokemon standing, and is still able to win games on its own. However, its lack of ways to boost its damage output without Weakness Policy often leave it crippled by Intimidate. By nature of its type combination, it also greatly fears metagame staples like Kyogre, Regieleki, or Landorus-T. solid

ability: Regenerator
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe Is there a more relevant spread for EV's that may benefit Ho-Oh better? Usage indicates a wide variety of options for Ho-Oh, and most appear to be a bit bulkier and Adamant. I do note below to opt the bulky set to OO but, I'm wondering if a bulkier WP set would be better than just 252/252 offensive straight shooter.

[SET COMMENTS]

* Sacred Fire is by far Ho-Oh's most useful Fire-type STAB move, hitting various Steels like Zacian-C, Kartana, and Solgaleo. Its ability to frequently burn other physical attackers like such as Groudon and Landorus-T is extremely useful for preserving Ho-Oh's longevity.

* Brave Bird hits Kyogre incredibly hard while also allowing it to boost its speed with Max Airstream, outspeeding Calyrex-S and Zacian-C after one boost.

* Earthquake is useful for chunking Incineroar and Regieleki while also boosting its already massive Special Defense with Max Quake. move mention of recover here, still keep slashed with protect as well but EQ isn't 100% needed and there is a world where recover is a really nice option over EQ to keep the WP mon around longer.

* Recover is an alternative option to Protect, allowing Ho-Oh to stall out opposing Dynamax turns or heal quickly after gaining Speed boosts through Max Airstream.

* Due to Ho-Oh's weaknesses to Electric-, Rock-, and Water-type attacks, it makes an excellent user of Weakness Policy, the only real option it has to boost its Attack. Life Orb can provide a smaller boost instantly, but this comes at the cost of Ho-Oh's HP and doesn't do much to make it more threatening against its weaknesses.

name: Bulky Attacker
move 1: Sacred Fire
move 2: Brave Bird
move 3: Recover
move 4: Protect
item: Lum Berry / Safety Goggles / Leftovers
ability: Regenerator
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

* Sacred Fire is important for spreading burns to opposing physical attackers as well as being able to set sun with Max Flare.

* Brave Bird gives Ho-Oh a secondary STAB-move useful for hitting common Fire resists such as Incineroar, Kyogre, and Tapu Fini.

* Recover further boosts Ho-Oh's longevity, allowing it to stall Dynamax turns and outlast its opponents.

* Lum Berry is useful for letting Ho-Oh sponge any stray status; however, as Ho-Oh will most often be hit with powder moves such as Spore and Sleep Powder, Safety Goggles is more recommended. Leftovers helps with further increasing Ho-Oh's longevity.

literally can't think of any unless we wanna mention special sets but really not feeling that. I'd move the bulky set to OO. WP is predominantly used for Ho-Oh and generally speaking it is better as an other options set because the defensive benchmarks vary so commonly from team to team for Ho-Oh. Also I'd mention Iron Head as a potential addition allowing Ho-Oh to boost its own defense. Otherwise yeah it doesnt have much outside the bulky set for OO.

moved bulky set to OO and merged recover comment. For now I think it's just best to stick with the 252 jolly, you need the speed to outrun caly-s at +1 and anything less than max seems to make a huge impact on damage output. I can make a specific mention of the bulky spread you came up with on discord if you'd prefer.
