- Houndstone carves a niche in the metagame as a bulky spinblocker that can comfortably switch into Great Tusk and Iron Treads.
- Will-O-Wisp prevents physical attackers from setting up on Houndstone and spreads status on passive Pokemon like Corviknight, Toxapex, and Ting-Lu.
- Rest gets rid of status and helps Houndstone remain healthy throughout the game.
- Houndstone's EVs and ability make it surprisingly bulky, allowing it to survive even a Tera Dark Crunch from Choice Band Chien-Pao and OHKO back with Body Press.
- Tera Water grants Houndstone a resistance to Fire-type moves, which are otherwise super effective because of its ability. Additionally, it gives Houndstone a neutral typing against threats like Chien-Pao, Kingambit, and Annihilape.
- Houndstone's primary role is to act as a spinblocker with some defensive utility, so it is essential to pair it with Pokemon that set entry hazards such as Ting-Lu, Clodsire, Great Tusk, and Iron Treads, as well as strong wallbreakers like Chien-Pao, Koraidon, Annihilape, Miraidon, and Iron Bundle that make the most out of the chip damage.
