Well my only question concerning profanity is what actually makes a word 'rude'? A word such as shit or fuck is seen as being impolite and shouldn't be used in 'decent' society. What criteria do people actually base how polite/impolite a word is? I have never figured it out so when it comes to a word like 'bloody', would it be rude or polite?

Just swear all the time before people stop deciding some words are "rude" and some aren't. Works for me.

It depends on the society, I know some people who won't bat an eye at "shit," "fuck," or "crap." Any religious curse words, or just saying "jesus" would get you a lecture.

I try not to swear in public and in front of my family or people I don't know out of politeness, but when I'm with my friends in private, I'll swear a lot.

Ironically enough (after a few close calls that led me to exhaust my entire 15 second tape delay on air, not all swearing but still), I think I actually have to cut down on my swearing.

Go fuck yourself, FCC. Fuck you.

I think I swear a tad too much. And watching Father Ted has made me say feck a feckload, which is probably a swear word but you can never be sure with those Irish people.

Depends entirely on the situation, for example, on the Internet, I curse occasionally, and more often with friends than in regular occasions.

In real life, however, I rarely use curses. I'm a regular goody two shoes. Except when I'm playing video games, then I curse frequently.

I swear in front of my friends constantly, never in front of parents and rarely when talking with girls. I don't know, just seems wrong in the latter situations...

Tbh, I used swear words a lot more when I was younger, although, recently I have been using them more. I don't think I swear too much. I know some people who use at least 3 swear words per sentence...that's A LOT!

I have only ever sworn when I was exceptionally young and did not realize what I said was bad. Otherwise, never.

It is not because I fear I am being blasphemous or that I will go to hell if I swear. However, I do find it is tasteless, vulgar, and quite disrespectful to others (sometimes making others uncomfortable, whether they have before heard it or not). In addition, hearing one swear always comes off as either immature, ignorant, or just plain unintelligent to me, depending upon the situation. After all, it is not as if we have several synonymns in the English language. I know I would prefer a little more rich dialog.

And from an acting standpoint, to use such words to "convey strong feeling or emotion" is a crutch for poor acting skills.

The only time I do not mind cursing is if it is coming from Dr. Robotnik. That guy is hilarious.

I almost never swear anymore, I used to swear a little when I was in like 3rd grade, when I thought it was really funny. I almost never swear in public, but sometimes when I'm playing basketball (a bad habit, i know)

Only when I'm making jokes or ranting (usually in a "joke-ish" manner).

Otherwise, pretty much never. Not that I care for those that do or think it's a sign of stupidity, immaturity, blah blah (there is only a mild correlation at best!) but because I just don't happen to.

Unless it's with someone I'm meeting for the first time and they look a bit PC, pretty much every day. I never swear as a means to insult someone though. It's just 'fuckcakes I forgot to read that article' or 'shit, I should've used trick instead of EQ'. The swear word itself doesn't mean anything, nor should it. A word is but breaths of air. What is important is the intention or the content of the word in whatever context. People should really stop freaking out over swearing without any intended harm.

Whenever I feel like it, which isn't that often. I swear when I'm mad, but I don't get mad very often so I don't swear very often.

I do think that most people who swear frequently fall under one of two categories: either they're teenagers who think they're rebels on soceity (looking at Chris is me here) or just badasses in general, or they're just dumb and immature. I'm not saying the swears themselves do that, but the fact that they choose to use these swears and how they use them makes that impression. Though they would probably make that impression no matter what language they used.

its pretty much a part of under-40s british culture to swear as many times as possible in a given conversation
