VGC I'd like some suggestions on my Reg G VGC team

Hello there dear reader, this is my team. I just finalized it about a week ago with the addition of chien-pao, and I would appreciate any and all suggestions on how I can make my team better. This is made to perfectly mirror my team in S/V. Thank you in advance and lets get started.

:Zamazenta-Crowned:
Zamazenta-Crowned @ Rusted Shield
Ability: Dauntless Shield
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 164 Def / 84 Spe
Impish Nature
- Behemoth Bash
- Protect
- Wide Guard
- Body Press

Zamazenta is obviously the star of the show. Its a great all rounder with all the tools my team needs to succeed, it can do great damage with behemoth bash and body press (If you're wondering why I am not running heavy slam, its because of Pokemon like calyrex ice and raging bolt, since there are a lot of heavy Pokemon in Reg G, its safer to run the more consistent option). Zamazenta also can support its team with wide guard to block the powerful spread moves running amok in this regulation set. Zamazenta's EV spread is made so it is very bulky, can do tons of damage with body press, and is decently fast to out speed a lot of slower Pokemon. It finally has tera grass to block spore from amoongus and get rid of that ground weakness.

:Rillaboom:
M O N K E (Rillaboom) @ Meadow Plate
Ability: Grassy Surge
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 84 HP / 252 Atk / 160 SpD / 12 Spe
Adamant Nature
- U-turn
- Grassy Glide
- Taunt
- Fake Out

Rillaboom is made to be a mix between support and damage. I opted to run meadow plate over assault vest so I could run taunt on rillaboom. Taunt is vital to my game plan since I have 4 physical attackers, and shutting down will-o-wisp is key to making sure my Pokemon are all doing the most with what they can. It also threatens many strategies and shuts down support Pokemon, plus with rillaboom being one of my leads, it can be much harder to play around. It still does a lot of damage, make no mistake, with max attack and STAB grassy glides boosted with grassy terrain, meadow plate, and even tera grass, it can one shot Pokemon like Flutter mane before they can even move. The rest of its EVs go into making up some of the special bulk it lost without the assault vest, with the exception of the 12 speed EVs, which are there to make sure I can out speed all will-o-wisp users, since Rotom wash is still used and was ever so slightly faster than rillaboom, and the last thing I want is for the opponent to render of of my Pokemon useless for the rest of the battle. Finally I have U-turn for momentum and fake out to further support my team. And with grassy terrain giving a passive 6% of max health healed at the end of each turn, it can help keep Zamazenta and my other Pokemon healthy and on the field for longer.

:Ogerpon-Wellspring:
Hanma (Ogerpon-Wellspring) (F) @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
Level: 50
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ivy Cudgel
- Horn Leech
- Spiky Shield
- Follow Me

Ogerpon is another hybrid of offense and support. With powerful Ivy cudgels and horn leeches, it can do good damage while staying on the field for a while. Follow me is a great tool if Ogerpon is at low health and can save its partner some damage. And with tera water embody aspect, it can function as a weak, but still good, special wall. And with having both grassy terrain and rain on this team, Ogerpon's STAB moves can be boosted to even higher levels of damage. Plus its ability makes it a great way to counter Kyogre and and other rain teams. Its EV spread is simple enough, just having a standard max speed and attack. And wellspring mask actually gives a 1.2 times boost to my attack, meaning its tough to leave ogerpon of the field for a while without taking some serious chunks.

:Pelipper:
Toilet Bird (Pelipper) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Drizzle
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 20 SpA / 236 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hurricane
- Weather Ball
- Protect
- Wide Guard

Pelipper is an amazing support Pokemon, it is made to be decently bulky with max HP and enough special defense to comfortably take a hit, and with tera ground to stop those pesky electric type attacks, its good at sticking around for a while. With a sitrus berry this is boosted even more, making this bird amazing at being around the whole battle. But it also is a Pokemon you can't ignore, with wide guard to help stop powerful spread moves, and stab hurricanes and weather balls, it can chunk a lot of mons for good damage. By far the most important aspect of this Pokemon is rain, since half of my team is weak to fire type moves, having rain can help keep them safe. And with Ogerpon enjoying rain boosted Ivy cudgels, and my Tornadus indulging on 100% accurate Bleakwind storms, rain helps to benefit my entire team.

:Chien-Pao:
Chiem-Bao (Chien-Pao) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sword of Ruin
Level: 50
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Protect
- Sucker Punch
- Sacred Sword

Chien-Pao is a hyper-offense extension of my team, with great coverage in ice and dark, plus a powerful sacred sword, it can do insane amount of damage, picking off many Pokemon that may have escaped Zamazenta. But what really sets Chien-Pao apart is it's ability, Sword of Ruin. This passively lowers the defense of all Pokemon on the field except for itself by 25%. This is huge to since I have 3 other physical attackers, since this basically powers up their attacks by 25%, and don't worry, this does not affect Zamazenta's body press. It finally has tera ghost to protect it from fighting type attacks and fake out, and an EV spread made for it to be fast and do damage. Its item is the standard focus sash to help with longevity.

:Tornadus:
Typhoon (Tornadus) (M) @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 180 HP / 76 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tailwind
- Taunt
- Protect
- Bleakwind Storm

Tornadus is the final mon on my team, but make no error, it is last but certainly not least. The main reason I use it is for tailwind support, because with tailwind, it allows my team to out speed fast powerhouses like booster energy Flutter mane and Calyrex Shadow Rider, along with others. But it can also be doing other things like using priority taunt to stop Pokemon like Clefairy and other support mons before they can even move. It's tera type is dark to stop opposing tornadus and Whimsicott from stopping it, and a 100 Base power STAB Bleakwind storm is always nice to have. Finally the EV spread is made so tornadus is fast even without prankster and the rest of it goes into evening out its bulk. And it is running covert cloak to stop fake out users so it can safely set up tailwind.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, please tell me if there is anything I should change or swap out, I was thinking maybe swapping out tornadus for a whimsicott of my own, but I'm not sure, so please tell me what you think.

Hello NotProGamer6, and this feels like a standard Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:team. Some of the things feel off (a lot of it is the EVs), yet that's why I'm here, to fix them!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Behemoth Bash --> Heavy Slam on Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:.
You statement about Behemoth Bash being more consistent is just wrong. Your pressing Body Press into the heavier Pokemon like Calyrex-I:calyrex-ice:and Raging Bolt:raging bolt:, and Heavy Slam is just more powerful since Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:is one of the heaviest Pokemon in the format.

Wide Guard --> Iron Defense on Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:
Since Pelipper:pelipper:is on the team, I recommend you run the IronPress set (Iron Defense+Body Press). This also allows you to eat more hits and improve the Calyrex-I:calyrex-ice:TR matchup. This one isn't mandatory, but I highly recommend it.

New Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:EV spread: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 116 Def / 116 SpDef / 20 Spe / Impish
Not running any Special Defense investment on Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:is a gamble. Shamefully stolen from the Smooth Strategy Dex, this spread is very bulky and I recommend you pick it up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meadow Plate:meadow plate: --> Assault Vest:assault vest:on Rillaboom:rillaboom:
I really advise this, it is far more reliable. You already have Taunt on Tornadus:tornadus:, so I really don't advise running it here. Also missing a lot of bulk can be scary into tough matchups like Lunala:lunala:and Miraidon:miraidon:.

Taunt --> Wood Hammer on Rillaboom:rillaboom:
Since we are now running Assault Vest, Wood Hammer is much better. Even without Assault Vest, not having Wood Hammer is a huge mistake. This is due to Grassy Glide not doing enough damage and not having priority when Miraidon:miraidon:'s and Indeedee-F:indeedee-f:'s respective terrains are active.

New Rillaboom:rillaboom:EV spread: 252 HP / 116 Atk / 4 Def / 108 SpDef / 28 Spe Adamant
Again stolen from Smogon, the before spread felt really odd. Not enough bulk, and without the Assault Vest, your Rillaboom kind of got KO'd by any Chi-Yu:chi-yu:.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ogerpon-W:ogerpon-wellspring: --> Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike: / Amoonguss:amoonguss:
This is an optimization pick, as Ogerpon-W:ogerpon-wellspring:hasn't seen much success this format and you already have a supportive Grass-type. If you really want a redirection support, you should choose Amoonguss:Amoonguss:here, though I recommend Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:as it is one of the top 4 Pokemon in the format for a reason.

As far as the Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:sets go, a Choice Scarf set works nicely. And for Amoonguss:amoonguss:, any old Rocky Helmet / Sitrus Berry set should work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sitrus Berry:Sitrus berry: --> Rocky Helmet:rocky helmet:on Pelipper:pelipper:
Honestly, Sitrus Berry Pelipper:pelipper:is bad. Rocky Helmet is way better imo. Here is the spread for Rocky Helmet. For this set, something like Safety Goggles also works.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sacred Sword --> Lash Out / Throat Chop on Chien-Pao:chien-pao:
I don't think Sacred Sword is necessary on Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:, as these types of teams struggle into Ghost-types such as Calyrex-S:calyrex-shadow:and Lunala:lunala:. Throat Chop is also useful tech into Incineroar:incineroar:, as it cancels Parting Shot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Tornadus:tornadus:EV spread: 252 HP / 204 Def / 4 SpAtk / 44 SpDef / 4 Spe / Modest
This spread is more bulky, especially since you didn't invest anything in Special Defense. It also gives you more power. I don't think that much Speed is necessary, as you out speed lots with Tailwind as well as transferring that to bulk.

Here is you new team: https://pokepast.es/b838a0a450970c67
Good luck and happy battling!

Thank you so much for the advice, I will update these things as soon as I can but it may take a while because I also do S/V, and this is a tall order. I am a little bit confused about rillabooms EV spread, since you mentioned chi yu but it has severely fallen off, the extra special bulk is nice to have, but I still wonder if its worth giving up that much damage, especially with rillaboom's attack stat being good, but not good enough to justify so little investment. But again, thank you so much for the advice and I think this will help me out a lot.

I am a little confused on urshifu though, since I am running tailwind, it doesn't seem to make sense to run a scarf, since if tailwind is up, I am already faster than other mons. I was thinking maybe mystic water in place, but I'd love to hear what you think. I would also like to know why rain dance, it can work don't get me wrong, but when I am running pelipper it seems like a wasted moveslot, especially when protect is important I am also confused on tera ghost on pelipper, since fake out isn't an issue and tera ground can help with raging bolt and miraidon.

- Your not always going to have Tailwind up, so Choice Scarf Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:is good in those situations, as well as just being a good Pokemon when you don't want to bring Tailwind (examples would be in the CIR:calyrex-ice:Balance MU). It also allows for good damage onto CSR:CALYREX-SHADOW:, which is amazing.

- Rain Dance on Tornadus:tornadus:is just generally good, as sometimes your not bringing Pelipper:pelipper:, so setting up manual Rain without having to switch in and out can be useful. It's also good into stuff like Koraidon:koraidon:. If an opposing Koraidon:koraidon:switches in but you have Pelipper:pelipper:already on the field, you have to take a few turns to reposition. If you have Tornadus:tornadus:on the field in the sane position as Pelipper:pelipper:, you can just press Rain Dance. You also don't really need Protect thanks to Covert Cloak ignoring Fake Out.

- Tera Ghost Pelipper:pelipper:is able to avoid Fake Out, and your not bringing Pelipper:pelipper:into Miraidon:miraidon:. For Raging Bolt:raging bolt:, it's just something to play around. I did some matches with the updated team, and I found that the immunity to Fake Out is very nice. Into Raging Bolt:raging bolt:, I was able to KO it every time thanks to a series of factors including Fake Out from Rillaboom:rillaboom: and damage pressure from Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:and Chien-Pao:chien-pao:.

Well that makes sense, I'll give it a try, but I did give rillaboom max attack in sacrifice for HP, since I felt the added damage can really help swing battles, and I dont think it makes that much of a difference, especially with that much special defense.

Still at about 15% which is amazing, probably more than that tbh.
Your Rillaboom:rillaboom:spread was too slow to actually take advantage of Taunt, and even with all that power, with only Grassy Glide your not doing much. Having a bulkier Rillaboom:rillaboom:is essential in lots of matchups.

You still pick up all the KOs you want. On top of all of that, you have Tera Grass which makes all that attack investment feel unnecessary. If you feel that max attack is absolutely needed, then go for it, just run AV and probably 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpDef. If you want I can run some calcs with Tera Grass and no Grassy Terrain, just I'm tired right now lol.

Greetings. Interesting team you got there. PenguGuy above me has covered a lot of the stuff already. I shall mention the general threats and changes to the team:

Threats to the Team:

  • :miraidon:Miraidon: The way your team currently is, a well positioned Miraidon can tear through the team quite easily. You have 3 Pokemon weak to Miraidon's Electro Drift, and both Rillaboom and Chien-Pao gets OHKO'd by Draco Meteor. Not to mention, many Miraidon team compositions run Choice Scarf Chi-Yu:Chi-Yu:which can snipe Zamazenta-C, and bringing Pelipper into Miraidon isn't exactly a nice option.

  • :Calyrex-shadow:Calyrex-S: Your only means of hitting Calyrex-S for super effective damage is Chien-Pao's Sucker Punch, which isn't exactly a reliable option. Not to mention, boosted Calyrex-S Draining Kiss set can get past Wide Guard, making you waste turns while you lack the offensive pressure to hit it back.

  • :Lunala:Lunala: The team doesn't have any effective means to get past a Lunala, and the current gameplan is very risky.

Team replacements:

  • :Ogerpon-wellspring: Ogerpon-W -> :Urshifu rapid strike: Urshifu-R: Ogerpon-W is rather slow in the current format, lacks positioning, and is easily outclassed by the more popular Urshifu-R. Choice Scarf Urshifu-R provides positioning with U-Turn, can pressure Calyrex-S with Surging Strikes, OHKOes Incineroar and gets rid of Chi-Yu by tanking it's Fire-type attacks. Surging Strike also benefits from being boosted by Pelipper's Rain. It's also nice into Lunala to deal massive damage once Shadow Shield's are down.

  • :Tornadus: Tornadus -> :Incineroar: Incineroar: You do not really need two Rain setters in this team, and Zamazenta teams are better off running more positioning tools. Incineroar provides Fake Out to aid in Zamazenta-C's Iron Defense set up, Taunt's any Will-O-Wisp users, and directly threatens Calyrex-S and Lunala with Knock Off, forcing them to terastallize to allowing Zamazenta-C to hit them with Heavy Slam. Not to mention, most of the team are rather slow and position heavy to take full advantage of Tornadus's Tailwind.

Moves, Tera and Item changes:

:Zamazenta-Crowned: Zamazenta-C:

  • Wide Guard -> Iron Defense on Zamazenta-C: As the team doesn't have many offensive Pokemon to take advantage of Zamazenta-C's Wide Guard, it is better to run Iron Defense to turn Zamazenta-C into a very powerful threat, and take advantage of Pelipper's Wide Guard instead. This allows you to easily deal with opposing Rillaboom, Raging Bolt and even Miraidon outside of Terrain.

  • Behemoth Bash -> Heavy Slam: Heavy Slam is much more potent thanks to Zamazenta-C being one of the heaviest Pokemon in the format, and is quite useful in damaging Amoonguss, Tera Fairy Calyrex-S and Lunala, Clefairy and Flutter Mane.

:Rillaboom: Rillaboom:

  • Meadow Plate -> Assasult Vest: As PenguGuy above me mentioned, Assault Vest seems better for a balance team approach. It is also exceptionally helpful when dealing with Miraidon, enabling you to survive Draco Meteor in Grassy Terrain.

  • Taunt -> Wood Hammer: Taunt is useless on an Assault Vest set, so swap it to Wood Hammer. The extra damage helps a lot, especially when combined with Zamazenta-C's Body Press.

:Pelipper: Pelipper:

  • Tera Ground -> Tera Ghost/Grass: Tera Ground is not going to stop Miraidon from using Draco Meteor to OHKO Pelipper. You ideally want to save the Tera for Zamazenta-C to get around Electro Drift. Tera Ghost, meanwhile, has much broader utility when dealing with Fake Out users, and can instantly threaten to OHKO Incineroar or massively damage Rillaboom, Urshifu-R and Amoonguss. Ghost-typing is also exceptionally handy for the Zamazenta-C mirror. Tera Grass on the other hand, is quite useful to deal with Urshifu-R, Amoonguss and Rillaboom, when dealing with a team that has Raging Bolt. Test both, imo, and use what you feel most comfortable with.

  • Sitrus Berry -> Rocky Helmet: As Safety Goggles is better off with Incineroar, Rocky Helmet makes an ideal item choice here to punish Urshifu-R, Fake Out attempts and opposing Zamazenta-C.

:Chien-pao: Chien-Pao:

  • Sacred Sword -> Lash Out: Tera Ghost Incineroar with Will-O-Wisp can be a big threat to the team. Lash Out on Chien-Pao gives a solid answer to it. The Fighting-type coverage isn't really needed when you have Zamazenta-C and Urshifu-R. Being able to reliably hit the Ghost-types is also a big plus.

NOTE: I would recommend referring to Smogon Strategy Dex for relevant EV spreads.

Hope this helped, good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice, I will get these changes in as soon as I can, a lot of it pengu guy already covered so I can do that, but I am a bit worried about not having any sort of speed control, especially with Calyrex-S and any scarfed pokermon. And I opted to run throat chop over lash out since Lash Out doesn't give anything with chien pao being so fast.

Your Rillaboom:rillaboom:spread was too slow to actually take advantage of Taunt, and even with all that power, with only Grassy Glide your not doing much. Having a bulkier Rillaboom:rillaboom:is essential in lots of matchups.

I feel the speed control isn't as necessary with Zamazenta-C, since you won't be outspeeding Miraidon or Zacian anyways as they have their own Tailwind. Having better matchup spread felt more important to me, instead of stacking weaknesses tbh

This isn’t a critique, however more of a warning. Kyogre could be really scary for your current team if Rillaboom either goes down or doesn’t get brought at all, due to rain. Along with this, Calyrex-I, Miraidon, and Ursaluna-B can have a field day. (I’m talking Tera Ground Tera Blast or High Horsepower Calyrex-I) as there just aren’t Pokemon that can take a hit against them besides Zamazenta. I agree with giving Rillaboom and Assult Vest and suggest finding a good way to fend off Physical Attackers, as well as Kyogre and Miraidon. Take this with a grain of salt; I’m new to Smogon (not necessarily Showdown, just the forums).

I'd like to clear a few things here

Kyogre:kyogre:actually has quite the negative matchup into Zanazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:thanks to Wide Guard on both it and Pelipper:pelipper:, Tera Grass on the dog, and Rillaboom:rillaboom:. If Tornadus:tornadus:is kept on the team, you can match opposing speed control, and if Incineroar:incineroar:is run, you can threaten it with Fake Out and Parting Shot. I wouldn't say it's an issue.

Calyrex-I:calyrex-ice:doesn't run Tera Ground Tera Blast, let alone either of the options. And Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:actually also has a positive matchup into Calyrex-I:calyrex-ice:thanks to, yet again, Wide Guard+Tera Grass.

Miraidon is an issue, yes, but slowing it down with Rillaboom:rillaboom:and Fake Out plus Tera Grass Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:makes it a lot easier. The shield dog does generally have a bad matchup into Miraidon:miraidon:though.

Ursaluna-B:Ursaluna-Bloodmoon:fears Zamazenta-C:zamazenta-crowned:as well as Chien-Pao:chien-pao:and Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:. Not a bad MU at all.

Incineroar:incineroar:has already been suggested as an option for physical attackers, but I don't think anything else should be edited.

I’ve considered using Calyrex-I with Tera Ground Tera Blast because I’ve missed so many crucial High Horsepowers. Aside from that, this does clear stuff up. I did see those as threats if played correctly, but Wide Guard does help.

Tera Grass Zamazenta-C with Wide Guard helps beat Caly-I because Wide Guard beats out Glacial Lance and Tera Grass beats out High Horsepower, letting allies like Chi-Yu and Rillaboom take out Calyrex-I.

Tera Grass does well into Zamazenta as a Electric-resist, especially since Zamazenta-C doesn’t like taking Electro Drift or Volt Switch in electric terrain.

I've tried this team out, and the main problem I've had is that none of Chien-Pao's damaging moves are very powerful or consistent. The same for Chi-yu's dark type moves. Because of this, I've been having trouble against Calyrex-S and Miraidon teams, as I don't really have a way to deal consistent damage on those before they KO mine. Is there any way I can get around this?

Rillaboom should be your best friend in the Miraidon matchup, especially since it resets terrain. Using Chien-Pao also helps out there.

Calyrex-S actually just loses to Tera Water Surging Strikes, which is a lot easier to position than Chien-Pao IMO.
