take a good thing and fuck it all up in one night
Regulation H brings BSS back to the basics. No crazy paradoxes or restricteds, not even the ruins. It’s quite a balanced metagame that allows for a different form of expression with teambuilding. I was able to take a more laid back approach to my first Reg H team, managing to find use for my favorite Pokemon, Primarina. It actually ended up being one of my more enjoyable teams to play with, and I find it very comfortable. So here it is.

A fairly balanced squad with plenty of power despite the bulk it employs, making liberal use of Banded Dragonite to break and clean, alongside Specs Primarina to form a very powerful core. Stamina Archaludon provides Stealth Rock support, physical walling prowess, and capable offense all in one package, while Ursaluna-B and Volcarona are both bulky yet powerful attackers in their own right. Finally the team is rounded off with a fast Gholdengo, being a great cleaner and foil to more defensive play.

Primarina is my favorite Pokémon of all time, so I was extremely happy to see it be viable in this meta. I’ve always been a massive fan of Choice Specs on Primarina so I decided to make a set with that. Aria and Moonblast are self explanatory, as is Flip Turn, Psychic Noise is nice to catch stuff like Toxapex or Clodsire and prevent it from recovering off the damage it takes. This allows something like Dragonite or Gholdengo to come in and grab the KO or scare them out in fear of not being able to check Primarina later. 76 Speed can get the jump on some of the slower Dragonite running around, and makes the Primarina mirror less volatile. Primarina is a very valuable asset to this team but I’m just super happy that my favorite mon is a top threat for once.

Ursaluna Bloodmoon was already one of the top threats in Reg G, so when Reg H turned the power level way down it’s not hard to see how it became one of the absolute scariest mons in the format. This is the same set I’ve used on Blursa for ages, everything is very self explanatory, the 68 Speed creeps uninvested Primarina, allowing Ursaluna to surprise nuke them and gain an early lead. Thats it really, bear good.

Choice Banded Dragonite is insane. Insane damage, insane bulk, insane versatility, it really is just the best word to describe it. As always Tera Normal Extreme Speed is an absurd tool for anything to have, but when backed by Dragonite’s Attack and bulk, and boosted even further by Choice Band, it’s as close as you can really get to a “win” button. Earthquake is your best bet to hit Gholdengo and the odd Toxapex or Clodsire, while Low Kick makes quick work of any Ursaluna Bloodmoon that tries to stay in and trade blows. When all else fails, the sheer strength of Outrage can muscle through most things not immune to it. This is the most extensively I’ve used banded Dragonite thus far in SV and it’s been a blast. Dragonite really can do it all.

Volcarona was a late addition to this team but quickly became a key member and one of the absolute best mons for almost any situation. I opted for a bulkier set that aims to use its survivability to set up on the wide array of special stackers running around in the current metagame. Tera Fairy is taken to have access to coverage for Dragonite and to take advantage of Fairy’s great defensive profile. Especially being able to negate phasing attempts from dragon tail users such as Archaludon and the like. Flame Body is an infuriating ability, I’ve won numerous games off of proccing it against something like a Dragonite or Sneasler and having their threat essentially nullified for the rest of the game. While giving up Boots was a hard call, I ultimately think Sitrus is better, as it allows Volcarona to continue setting up on stuff like Ursaluna Bloodmoon and be more proactive than if it had to heal immediately. Volcarona is by no means perfect but when played correctly it is probably the most terrifying presence in the current meta.

Archaludon is an excellent offensive and defensive piece in the current metagame. It is capable of entirely shutting down physical attackers like Dragonite and Meowscarada, and becoming even harder to deal with thanks to Stamina making it harder to take down and allowing it to hit harder with Body Press. Roar allows it to phase out setup attempts from Dragon Dance Dragonite and Quiver Dance Volcarona, with Stealth Rock making those forced switches painful on their own. Tera Flying is taken to dodge Earthquake attempts from the likes of Dragonite and Garchomp while allowing it to resist the many fighting moves flying around to hit Ursaluna and Archaludon. While the Archaludon in particular can’t do much to opposing Volcarona or Gholdengo, it beautifully supports its teammates that can take those two on.

put in that work!
With the power level reigned in so much, Gholdengo finds itself back at the top of the tier list. This set is pretty much tailor made to beat your box standard Dragonite set that runs EQ Espeed as it’s only attacks. Outside of that, it can cause issues for some Sneasler sets, and even Annihilape can be annoyed by it. I’m gonna be totally honest I don’t exactly know what the EVs do I just stole them from one of my buddies and it did work so I kept it. Tera Fly is taken to dodge ground moves after Balloon is popped, and that’s really it. It’s a simple set, but it does good work.

And that’s the team! Pretty basic, especially since these six ended up becoming the top six in usage by the end of the month LOL, but I still like it. Special thank you to the Smogon Wi-Fi community for helping me get this team ready on console (even though I barely played console this month). It was a blast using the team on stream at the beginning of the season, and that wouldn’t have been possible without their help!
Despite the name of the team, I’m in a really good spot mentally rn, I’m getting into the groove of a stable job finally and I’m making the final preparations to bring home a pair of beautiful bunnies, which I’m super excited about!
