In-Game Music

I'll try and put one song from each game mentioned here. If a game is already up here, that one song will probably suffice.

Anyone who has spent any good amount of time on a Pokemon game knows there is probably SOME PLACE where there is good in-game music. Sometimes whole games might haves a good OST.

My favorites so far are the first Mystery Dungeon Games (Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team if anyone is wondering), and - honestly here - Black and White, which are the first games I myself have seen on par with Mystery Dungeon. However, a lot of games in Advance are really neat about some of their tunes, Champion Battle in FR / LG being one of my favorite examples. Best Game in Advance in terms of OST in my honest opinion is Gale of Darkness (XD). However, some of the old, 8-bit tunes from Silver and Yellow are really nice.

=======

In terms of games outside of Pokemon, there are some interesting finds, especially in Super Smash Brothers. I can't really think of any off of the top of my head, but I will update when I can.

=====

Just for the sake of putting some tunes to listen to:

Cipher Admin Battle: Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness

Champion Battle: Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

N's Castle Bridge: Pokemon Black and White

Unknown Battle (Dubbed Kanto Champion): Pokemon Black and White

Sky Tower: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Blue Rescue Team

PLAY! Concert - Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross

The Sun Rises: Okami

Aquatic Run Zone: Sonic 2

Main Theme: God of War 2 (NOTE: Unhealthy amounts of epicness)

The 13th Struggle: Kingdom Hearts 2

Lone Wolf: Halo Reach

Falling Down: Megaman Zero 4

Twister: The World Ends With You

I'll Face Myself (Boss Battle): Persona 4

Love Will Grow (Piano Solo By Nobuo Uematsu)

Final Song: Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time

Temporal Tower: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Time / Explorers of Darkness

SO...YOU'RE THE KILLER! YOUR HONOUR, THIS IS HOW THE WITNESS DID IT (Ace Attorney)

Steven Stone's Theme: Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire Bonus Track

The Opened Way (1): Shadow of the Colossus

Any thoughts?

Mass Effect and God of War series both have godly eargasming soundtracks.
So does Halo. The original Halo. That had an amazing soundtrack. ODST had great piano stuff and Reach had good heavier orchestral stuff.
Drums everywhere.

Just about everything in Kingdom Hearts is great. Darkness of the Unknown, The 13th Struggle, Destati, Graceful Assassin, Lord of the Castle, Sacred Moon, Xion's Theme and Final Battle Theme, the list just goes on and on and on.

Also I love the music in the Megaman Zero series, in particular Falling Down, Cannonball, Supreme Ruler, Fake, and the themes for Snowy Plains (MMZ3), Neo Arcadia (MMZ2 in particular), Neo Arcadia Core (MMZ3), and Craft's level (MMZ4).

I personally found the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon music to be enticing, my favorite being Magma Cavern from Red/Blue (Which was also reused in Sky) and Star Cave. Some of the music can be happy and bouncy, some can be a bit depressing.

The World Ends with You also has some of the most epic in-game tracks - Twister, Game Over, and Three Minutes Clapping are a few of my favorites.

damn yes. those are some of the only soundtracks i ever bothered to download, that and persona 4's. (lots of jap pop rock here though!!!!!)

Some of my favourites from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 are
Dusk Forest, Deep Sealed Ruins, Hidden Land, Temporal Tower, and Primal Dialga battle music.

Apart from that, there's also some of the music in the Kingdom Hearts games. Rowdy Rumble and Sinister Shadows from KH2 stick out for me.

EDIT: Also this

Nice to see some VGM appreciation! Pokemon music is catchy as hell but I really love the remix tracks that come on the official music collection albums for the games:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV9xMo3DTb0 <-- Team Rocket Hideout
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XU5HA85pbg <-- Amazing steven stone arrange track

I also really liked the Team galactic battle theme in brawl.

Apart from Pokemon though I am a VGM freak.. notable music for me is from Ace Combat and anything from Atelier / Ar Tonelico, but I like just about everything under the sun. To prove.. http://pastebin.com/EUxiJWiB (yeah I can't seem to make ubuntu list it alphabetically but w/e)

Megaman games are pretty well respected for music, but my favorite is definitely Megaman 2's. Wily Stage 1 of course, but the title screen is so amazing.

My favorite would likely be Jet Set Radio's OST. It's fantastic, but I dunno if choosing games with "real music" is allowed. I guess The World Ends with You deserves mention since it's trance pop is nice to listen to sometimes.

For the more original, I've loved Sonic games, especially Sonic 3. I can listen to the first act Ice Cap, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg, Angel Island, Hydrocity, Lava Reef... Need I go on. Act 2 of Flying Battery is great as well. Even if the songs are repetitive, I grew up with them and find them amazing.

Oh, and who can forget Traverse Town from Kingdom Hearts 1? I wish they played that whenever I went downtown or to a grocery store or something.

yeah, i'm definitely a big fan of most of the kingdom hearts music. the world ends with you had some great tracks too, though not on the same level as kingdom hearts (where every song/track was basically consistently amazing). i'm pretty impartial to the majority of the megaman music; it's not like stunning or whatever, but it's by no means bad. honestly i didn't find the music from any mystery dungeon games too riveting. if i had to pick a favorite track from any of the games, i would say that the primal dialga battle music would take that spot. however, even that was only decent for me. i dunno though, it seems that loads of people like the mystery dungeon tracks. maybe i should just get my ears checked ?_?

if I had to list a top ten in terms of overall soundtrack, (meaning that the entire soundtrack, not just individual songs, is pretty much golden) it would go something like this

1. Cave Story
2. Sonic 3
3. Sonic 2
4. Boktai 2
5. Chrono Trigger
6.Dark Cloud 2
7. Megaman II
8. Pokemon G/S/C
9. Pokemon R/B/Y
10. Megaman X

I might end up editing this post with justifications and a song from each later, but man I guess I just needed to get my opinion out there.

I completely forgot to mention the Elder Princess Shroob battle theme in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time and the Fawful / Dark Bowser final battle theme in Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, which are both amazing.

Also as far as nostalgia tracks go the legendary dogs' theme in Crystal and the Fire Red / Leaf Green remix of the champion theme are my favorites. (Also I like Cynthia's theme and battle theme in D/P/Pt.)

I don't play many games besides pokemon, so here are my top ten tracks from it:
1.Galactic Admin
2.D/P/P gym leader
3.Deoxys
4.Shoal Cave
5.Suicune
6.Galactic Boss
7.Aqua/Magma Boss
8.Gen. 2/HGSS Kanto gym leader
9.DENNNNNNNISSSSSSS
10.Dialga/Palkia Brawl

My absolute favourite video game musics are the Donkey Kong Country and DKC2 soundtracks. From the nice calm gentle tracks like Stickerbush Symphony and Aquatic Ambience to more boppy tunes like Treetop Rock and Hot Head Bop. David Wise really pushed the outer limit of the SNES' capabilities.
Stickerbush Symphony: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73n7HTcmb5g
Aquatic Ambience.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDvKwSVuUGA
Hot Head Bop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyuJAaJcB_c
Treetop Rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMoroEuJPA8

Pokemon GSC had a lot of good tracks and the HGSS remakes do most of them justice or even imporve them (Rocket Battle Theme fuck yes), although some such as the Dark Cave were disappointing...
Lance Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWokB4Ec5Og
Dark Cave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALBTQMzD2so
Rocket Battle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HRKp2alHj8
Rocket Tower Takeover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZHyf6herxs

I doubt anyone will know these but the Dragonball Z Budokai series has some excellent music.
Evil Power: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bLzzQfTS68
The Greatest Tactics in the Universe (I do love 7/4 time): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0foCSy4Dfxw
We Go Nuts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYBSqrYBn90
Big Opportunity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZufE8yTFMk

Oh and Super Smash Bros Brawl has an excellent soundtrack too. They showed Kirby some favouritism but they got the job done elsewhere too.
Meta Knight's Revenge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_pwvqzlCGw
Final Destination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l07F9OubjU
Golden Sun Battle Medley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5laIEwx_N8
Ice Climber (I only really like the first 30 seconds or so but meh): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAwkGzO6NzQ

I could go on, I'm a big fan of Video Game Music.

tales of legendia had a wonderful soundtrack, despite being a mediocre game (and a piss-poor tales game by comparison)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNYm08xn8Sg&feature=related one of the first songs you hear, it sets the mood perfectly. never has adventuring seemed so appropriate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTvPg89TIMI this piece is so far from anything i've ever heard before in any setting
Hell YES. They need Go Shiina on a new Tales game. As much as I love Sakuraba, all his Tales work sounds the same. Legendia had an amazing soundtrack. Especially the first track you linked to. Defines the game for me.

My favourite soundtrack to any game is probably Sonic 3 & Knuckles though. Brings back a wave of nostalgia like no other. Project Chaos is one of my favourite remix projects as well.
