So, I have been looking into Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 viability Rankings, I had found one for the NC2000 (I think) and I was wondering if there was one for the Poke Cup and the Little Cup? thank you for all the work that you and the others have put in for this project
I've wanted to build a Tier List for Little Cup, but I haven't had time; however, since I've been playing the format lately, I can make one quickly:

In each group, Pokémon are listed by their New Pokédex number and not by their performance, this means that, for example, Gastly and Houndour have the same power because both belong to the B+ letter of the High Tier.

Please note that the list only takes into account Pokémon Stadium 2 rules, which can be seen here.

There is another Tier List for Little Cup, it was built by Gold and you can find it here.

Poké Cup and Nintendo Cup 2000 are the same format; Poké Cup is the international name, while Nintendo Cup 2000 is the Japanese name. I built a Tier List for that format, click here to watch it. There are other Tier Lists, like the one built by Chio, you can find it here.

There are also Tier Lists for Pokémon Stadium 1 formats like the Pika Cup, the Nintendo Cup '98 and the Poké Cup; if you want to give them a look, please give me a call and I'll give you the links.

Note: I've being updating my Little Cup Tier List since I published it, now it is complete.

Some friends and I built sample teams and resources for the six Pokémon Stadium 1 formats, you can check them here.

If you see me around, you can challenge me to any Gen I or Gen II format, specially, Stadium formats. You can find me on Discord as: Beelzemon 2003#0506

Little Cup Sample Teams for Pokémon Stadium 2

Hello chums, here are the new sample teams for Little Cup. It took me and my friends 11 months to build and test the teams, so we hope that you like them. Please take into account that the teams were built for Pokémon Stadium 2, which is the true Little Cup of Gen II. Pokémon Stadium 2 Little Cup is an official format created by Nintendo which debuted in 2000; on the other hand, Smogon’s version of Gen II Little Cup came out in 2004 and was based on the Nintendo version of the format.

If you want to know more about Pokémon Stadium 2 Little Cup rules, please click here. OK, without further ado, here are the teams:

Pokémon Stadium 2 Event Battle, Official Time Limits and Rule Edit

Hello chums, Pokémon Stadium 2 was re-released on the Nintendo Switch recently and, to celebrate it, I’ll talk about Event Battles and how you can create your own formats in the game. I hope that you like the article.

In the main menu, go to the top left corner and select Options, then, in the new menu, select Rule Edit, a screen will pop up with the following options:

Rule Name: Write the name of the format you’re creating, e.g. Underused.
Qualifying Pokémon: Press the A Button in this option and you will be taken to a window that has the 251 Pokémon of the Second Generation listed in the New Pokédex order. If you want to allow all Pokémon, just exit this window by pressing the B button; however, if you want to ban one or more Pokémon, press A on their respective pictures. Pokémon allowed will appear in a blue rectangle and Pokémon banned will appear on a red rectangle.
Pokémon Level: It can range from 1 to 100.
Maximum 3 Pokémon Level Total: This is in case you want to enforce the Level Sum Limit rule, e.g. if you are creating the Petit Cup and want the chosen Pokémon to have a Level Sum Limit between 75 and 80, you have to write 80 here. In the case of formats like Underused, where all the chosen Pokémon can be at level 100, you have to write 300.
Use Items?: This is an interesting option. If you want to ban all Items select Don’t use; on the other hand, if you want to allow all Items, select Use. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ban specific Items.
Hold Identical Items?: If you want to enforce Item Clause, select Don’t hold, otherwise, select Hold.
OK: Once you’re finished, press A to save your changes. Don’t worry, if you made a mistake or want to change the rules, you can edit them again.

In the table below I’ll give an example of a created format:

Rule Name
MiddleCup
Qualifying Pokémon
27 kinds
Pokémon Level
050 - 050
Maximum 3 Pokémon Level Total
Up to 150 (No restrictions)
Use Items?
Use
Hold Identical Items?
Don’t hold

Once you create a new format, you can see its rules in Event Battle or Free Battle, they look like this:

All formats that are created in Rule Edit can be played in the Event Battle or Free Battle modes; unfortunately, the formats always enforce the rule of bring six Pokémon and choose three, which means that all battles are of three versus three. If you want to play six versus six, you have to play in the Anything Goes option of the Free Battle mode.

Another disadvantage of Rule Edit is that the game doesn't give you Rental Pokémon for the formats you create, both players must use Pokémon from their Game Boy cartridges.

In the main menu of the game there is an option called Event Battle. Unlike the previous game, in Pokémon Stadium 2 you only need two controllers to play in this option; however, the only format you can play is the Challenge Cup. To play the other formats, both players must have a Pokémon Game Pak connected to their controllers with six Pokémon that meet the desired format’s requirements. Below is a brief explanation of Event Battle’s options:

Prime Cup: Known in Japan as Ultra Cup. All Pokémon from levels 2-100 are allowed, including the Ubers.
Poké Cup: This is the Nintendo Cup 2000, the famous Japanese tournament that took place from November 2000 to January 2001. Pokémon from levels 50 to 55 are allowed, except the Ubers; finally, the three chosen Pokémon must have a Level Sum Limit of 150 to 155.
Little Cup: This is the first Little Cup in Pokémon History. Only Pokémon that haven’t evolved and can evolve in the Second Generation are allowed, this includes Scyther and Chansey.
Challenge Cup: In this format, each player is given six random Pokémon. There are four levels: Poké Ball for Pokémon of Level 30, Great Ball for Pokémon of Level 45, Ultra Ball for Pokémon of Level 60 and Master Ball for Pokémon of Level 75. Each level has different kinds of Pokémon; however, there are 19 that never appear, these are: Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Unown, the Legendary Birds, the Legendary Beasts, the Pseudo-legendary Pokémon and the Ubers. If the Round 2 option is selected while you play this cup, players will get Pokémon with better moves. If you want to know more about this cup’s mechanics, go to this link.
Edit Rule: Here you can play the formats that you created in Rule Edit like the Middle Cup, the Mobile Cup 2001, the Battle Tower, etc. The sky is the limit! When the battle starts the announcer says “The Event Battle is on, this battle will be conducted under rules that were created by the competitors!”
Event Battle Settings: Here you can change the Time Limits, we’ll talk about them later.

12.jpeg

All formats enforce Species Clause, Pokémon Stadium 2 Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, Self-KO Clause, Recoil Moves Clause and Item Clause (this one is optional in Edit Rule formats).

Contrary to what I believed, in Event Battle you can give Items to your Pokémon that don’t have in-battle effects like Evolution Stones, Fresh Water, Lemonade, Soda Pop, Mails, Technical Machines, etc. These Item's icons appear black in the Event Battle menu. Of course, you can’t activate their effects during the battle.

13.jpeg

Event Battle’s main advantage is that you can select time limits for the battles; however, you can’t select Rental Pokémon, so if you want to use special mons like Level 50 Dragonite or Level 50 Tyranitar in the Poké Cup, you have to play in the Free Battle mode. Another disadvantage is that you can’t choose the stage, all battles take place in the stadium of their respective cup (in the case of Edit Rule, battles take place in the Free Battle stage and use the music of the Poké Cup).

14.jpeg
15.jpeg
16.jpeg

Here you can set the Time Limit for choosing a command (Move Selection Time) and for the overall battle (Battle Time) as shown below:

DefaultMinimumMaximum
Battle Time
15 minutes
5 minutes
90 minutes
Move Selection Time
30 seconds
10 seconds
90 seconds

21.jpeg
22.jpeg

Battle Time’s duration can be increased or reduced by 5 minutes, e.g. from 90 minutes to 85 to 80 to 75, etc. On the other hand, the Move Selection Time can be increased or reduced by 5 seconds, e.g. from 10 seconds to 15 to 20 to 25, etc.

Time Limits are On by default; however, players can turn them Off if they want. Finally, there is no in-game time limit for selecting Pokémon during Team Preview.

23.jpeg

As mentioned before, the Move Selection Time is the time players have to choose a command, be it a Move, a Switch or a Replacement if their Pokémon have fainted. If the time runs out, players are not disqualified, instead, the CPU forces them to do a specific action, which depends on which option was selected when the time ran out; those actions are mentioned below:

  • If the time runs out and nothing is selected, the CPU chooses the current Pokémon’s first Move, if that doesn’t have Power Points, then it chooses the second Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the third Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the fourth Move and if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses Struggle.

  • If the time runs out and the Battle button was pressed, the CPU chooses the current Pokémon’s first Move, if that doesn’t have PP, then it chooses the second Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the third Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the fourth Move and if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses Struggle.

  • If the time runs out and the Pokémon button was pressed, the CPU chooses the current Pokémon’s first Move, if that doesn’t have PP, then it chooses the second Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the third Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the fourth Move and if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses Struggle. This differs from Pokémon Stadium 1, where the CPU forced the player to select a specific Pokémon.

  • If the time runs out when the player has to replace a fainted Pokémon, the CPU chooses the first Pokémon, if it already fainted, then it chooses the second Pokémon and if that one fainted too, then it chooses the third Pokémon.

  • If the time runs out and the Run (forfeit) button was pressed, the CPU chooses the current Pokémon’s first Move, if that doesn’t have PP, then it chooses the second Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the third Move, if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses the fourth Move and if that doesn’t have PP either, then it chooses Struggle.
I don’t know if Batton Pass has its own Time Limit nor what happens if it runs out, if someone can test it, please let me know.

Normally, if the Battle Time runs out, a whistle sounds, the announcer says “That’s it, the battle is over” and the results of the battle are determined using the tiebraker criteria; however, there are some situations that can increase the Battle Time:

  • If the Battle Time runs out before the Moves/Switches animations finish, the animations continue to play and, after that, the battle finally ends. The actions that take place after the Battle Time runs out are also taken into account to determine the results.

  • If the Battle Time runs out when one or both players are selecting a Move/Pokémon, the battle continues and the players can continue to choose a Move/Pokémon (if their Selection Time runs out, then the CPU chooses a Move for them), then the Moves/Switches animations play and, after that, the battle finally ends. The actions that take place after the Battle Time runs out are also taken into account to determine the results.

  • If the Battle Time runs out when one or both players are replacing a fainted Pokémon, the battle continues and the players can continue to choose a Pokémon (if their Selection Time runs out, then the CPU chooses a Pokémon for them), then the Switches animations play and, after that, the battle finally ends. The actions that take place after the Battle Time runs out are also taken into account to determine the results (e.g. if a Pokémon takes damage or faints due to Spikes).

24.jpeg
25.jpeg

If the Battle Time runs out, the winner is determined using these criteria in the following order: number of remaining Pokémon and Sum of the Pokémon’s Hit Points Percentages.

The first criterion is easy to explain: the player that has more Pokémon alive when the battle finishes, wins; on the other hand, the second criterion refers to the Sum of each of the remaining Pokémon’s Hit Points Percentages, the player that has the highest sum of Hit Points Percentages wins. If both players have the same number of remaining Pokémon and Sum of Hit Points Percentages, then the match is declared a Draw.

Little Cup Tier List for Pokémon Stadium 2

Little Cup appeared for the first time in the game Pokémon Stadium 2, which was released in Japan in December 2000. During Gen II’s heyday, it was one of the most popular formats (I still remember when I played it with my friends on my Nintendo 64). Below is a Tier List that Aided Furball, Stealth Croc and I built during six months, we tested every Pokémon to make sure that the list was accurate. As the title says, the list is based on Pokémon Stadium 2 rules, which can be found here; on the other hand, in each group, Pokémon are listed by their New Pokédex number and not by their performance, this means that, for example, Gastly and Houndour have the same power because both belong to the B+ letter of the High Tier. OK, without further ado, here is the list:
