Jellicent is one of the few Pokemon blessed with an immunity to Dracovish's Fishious Rend thanks to its Water Absorb ability. It can also check various physical threats like Excadrill and Gyarados by virtue of its nice physical bulk and access to Will-O-Wisp and Strength Sap, the latter of which gives Jellicent a form of recovery. Night Shade is the most reliable way to reduce Jellicent's passivity, and coupled with Taunt and Will-O-Wisp it can disrupt passive defensive cores of Pokemon like Corviknight, Clefable, and Toxapex. The given Speed investment allows Jellicent to outspeed Corviknight, while the leftover EVs are put into physical bulk to handle threats like Excadrill and Dracovish better. Unfortunately, Jellicent faces severe competition from other bulky Water-types like Toxapex and Seismitoad: the former has better defensive capabilities, while the latter grants better role and utility compression.

Jellicent fits on balance teams that want a check to threats like Dracovish and Excadrill which can also annoy opposing bulky structures. The likes of Clefable, Sylveon, and Mandibuzz can check Dragapult and Hydreigon, which can easily beat Jellicent. These two also provide Wish support, compensating Strength Sap's relative unreliability. Hippowdon can stop Zeraora, Choice Band Aegislash, and Terrakion, all of which are capable of overwhelming Jellicent.
