ZU Kecleon (QC 3/3) [GP 2/2]

[OVERVIEW]
Kecleon is a good bulky attacker with near-exclusive access to the ability Protean, able to naturally check most of the special attackers in the tier due to its high natural Special Defense further boosted by Assault Vest. Its movepool is absolutely fantastic, featuring countless options like Knock Off, Drain Punch, Fire Blast, Ice Beam, and Fake Out. It also has access to Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch, which are great priority moves that can help deal with Kecleon's type disadvantages from its natural Normal typing, as well as helping compensate for Kecleon's poor Speed. However, Kecleon suffers from competition from Komala, another bulky Normal-type with a similar movepool but with a better ability and access to different options like U-turn and Rapid Spin. Kecleon, unlike its competitor Komala, is horribly vulnerable to status and crippled by both poison and burn. Kecleon also faces competition from Bouffalant as a bulky Normal-type, but both Bouffalant and Komala can diversify their sets while Kecleon is generally pretty one dimensional. While Kecleon sets itself apart with its access to priority and STAB offensive coverage that allows it to threaten balance while still being able to soak up hits, it has an unfortunately moderate Attack stat that leaves it walled by general physical walls like Altaria and Gourgeist-XL; Ice Beam helps circumvent these issues somewhat, though. Despite its shortcomings, Kecleon is able to set itself apart with Protean and the ability to run mixed sets to help break through some Pokemon that would normally beat it. However, as a bulky attacker, Komala with Comatose is still a better option and generally more suited for the role.

[SET]
name: Bulky Mixed Attacker
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Drain Punch
move 3: Shadow Sneak
move 4: Ice Beam / Sucker Punch / Fake Out
item: Assault Vest
ability: Protean
nature: Brave
evs: 252 HP / 156 Atk / 100 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
Knock Off is Kecleon's most powerful move in many situations and provides a ton of usefulness, as it is able to remove items, including the popular Eviolite on the non-fully evolved Pokemon, such as Mareanie and Bronzor, that inhabit ZU. Drain Punch has excellent synergy with Knock Off, is able to hit Dark-types like Silvally-Dark, and gives Kecleon some passive recovery. A neutral Drain Punch is more powerful than a neutral Knock Off if the target is not holding an item. Shadow Sneak is a useful priority attack that allows Kecleon to revenge kill weakened foes. It also disrupts Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting and Monferno due to Protean changing Kecleon into a Ghost-type. Ice Beam allows Kecleon to deal with physically defensive Pokemon like Gabite, Altaria, and Gourgeist-XL, which normally would pose a large issue to it. Sucker Punch can be used as a stronger, albeit less reliable form of priority, while Fake Out can help wear down foes more but is only able to be used on the first turn out.

Set Details
========
100 Special Attack EVs allow Kecleon to 2HKO Gourgeist-XL with Ice Beam and OHKO physically defensive Altaria after Stealth Rock damage, as well as OHKOing most defensive Gabite sets. If you're not using Ice Beam, 96 EVs can be placed into Attack and 4 into another stat, and the nature can be changed to Adamant. The remaining EVs are placed into Attack with a Brave nature to not compromise any bulk or power, and a Brave nature doesn't relevantly impact Kecleon's already mediocre Speed. Assault Vest helps Kecleon eat up most special attacks. Protean is a fantastic ability that changes Kecleon's typing with its moves, which also gives them a STAB boost.

Usage Tips
========

Kecleon should be used as an all-purpose special tank throughout the game, as it is able to switch into Pokemon like Oricorio, Zebstrika, and Choice Scarf Chatot somewhat easily. Kecleon's physical bulk is poor, and taking physical hits should be avoided if at all possible. Knock Off can be freely used early-game, as it is Kecleon's most powerful attack and can remove items. Drain Punch should be used when it hits the foe super effectively or if Kecleon is in need of some recovery. Protean should be utilized to the fullest, such as using Shadow Sneak in front of a Fighting-type so Kecleon will be immune to its super effective attack. Kecleon can also use its speed to its advantage in some cases, such as when facing a Choice-locked Normal-type like Chatot, which Kecleon can use Shadow Sneak on to become immune to its Normal-type attack and then Drain Punch or Knock Off on the next turn as the Normal-type will likely outspeed and Kecleon will retain its immunity. This process can be repeated if necessary. However, Silvally-Fighting runs Shadow Claw, so Kecleon needs to be careful, and Kecleon takes a lot from the relatively uncommon Flare Blitz Monferno. Kecleon's health needs to be preserved if it has many special attackers to check throughout the match, so sending it in recklessly on status and entry hazards is unadvised.

Team Options
========
Kecleon appreciates physical tanks like Altaria, Golem, Crustle, and Gourgeist-XL that can soak up physical attacks for it. Golem and Crustle are particularly useful for their ability to set Stealth Rock, which help wear down foes for Kecleon. In return, Kecleon can tank special attacks for these Pokemon. Special wallbreakers like Beheeyem and Simisear can help break through some of the physical walls that bother Kecleon. Pokemon with Heal Bell, like some Granbull and Altaria sets, can help keep Kecleon healthy despite the fact that it's an unconventional move in ZU. Status absorbers like Mareanie and Altaria are good teammates for the same reason. Kecleon greatly appreciates entry hazard removal from the likes of Swanna, Altaria, and Sandslash, as it is easily worn down and entry hazards only further decreases Kecleon's lifespan and force it to use Drain Punch more often. Golem checks, like Gourgeist-XL and Leafeon, are appreciated because Kecleon dislikes taking damage from offensive variants or a Toxic from defensive ones. Pokemon such as Golem and Monferno that appreciate Kecleon's ability to beat bulky foes like Bronzor and Altaria are good teammates.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
A Life Orb set can be used for more power, but this is at the cost of significant special bulk and it tends to chip Kecleon down even faster. A specially defensive set with Stealth Rock and Recover can be used; however, this set tends to be extremely passive and often ineffective. This set has the ability to run Color Change as well to help deal with special wallbreakers and offensive rain teams, despite Color Change being generally inferior, as it reduces Kecleon's already mediocre offensive presence. Fire Blast can be run to hit Mawile and Leafeon harder while still hitting Gourgeist-XL, but it is generally inferior coverage to Ice Beam for its ability to hit Pokemon like Altaria and Gabite. Power-Up Punch can boost Kecleon's Attack to help it break its checks more easily and can even let Kecleon sweep unprepared teams. Trick Room can be used to take advantage of Kecleon's low Speed or provide additional team support; however, Kecleon will be losing an already sought-after coverage slot and left vulnerable to attack. 228 Speed EVs with a Hasty nature can be used to outspeed Adamant Golem and Granbull, and with Life Orb Ice Beam and a minimum of 116 Special Attack EVs, it is able to OHKO Golem after Stealth Rock damage and 2HKO the latter. Toxic can be used to help break bulkier teams because of Kecleon's ability to threaten Heal Bell users like Altaria and Lickilicky.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types like Granbull and Mawile have high Defense and take very little from Kecleon's primary damaging moves. Granbull and Mawile also have Intimidate, which reduces Kecleon's power even further. Even Mr. Mime can cause issues, as it runs Psyshock to hit Kecleon's weak Defense stat, though it generally gets destroyed by Shadow Sneak. Trick can also be an issue as well.

**Residual Damage**: Kecleon is easily worn down, and Toxic is particularly devastating, as it severely limits Kecleon's ability to perform its duty of checking special attackers throughout the game. Being burned wears down Kecleon, although not as quickly as Toxic, and will halve Kecleon's Attack and render it useless. Along with status, entry hazards such as Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes wear Kecleon down and make checking special attackers significantly more difficult.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting and Monferno can break Kecleon with their powerful STAB attacks, but Kecleon can use Shadow Sneak to help circumvent some of these issues.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Kecleon is threatened by powerful physical attackers like Swords Dance Abomasnow and physical Floatzel variants, which can take advantage of Kecleon's mediocre Defense stat. Golem is extremely threatening as well, as it usually will outspeed Kecleon and deal a lot of damage, with Choice Band Golem able to OHKO Kecleon.

AM QC Check, Implement What You Want. Recommendations in BOLD
[OVERVIEW]
  • Kecleon is a fantastic bulky attacker in the tier with near-exclusive access to the ability Protean. (1)
  • However, Kecleon suffers from competition from Komala, another bulky Normal-type with a similar movepool, but with a better ability and access to more utility options like U-turn and Rapid Spin.(4A)
  • Despite its shortcomings, Kecleon is able to set itself apart with Protean and the ability to run mixed sets to help break through some things that would normally beat it such as? (6)
  • Kecleon is extremely bulky and is able to naturally check most of the Special Attackers in the tier such as? due to what? It's naturally high Sp Def and capability to viably run an AV. (2)
  • Kecleon has access to Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch, which are great priority moves that can help deal with Kecleon's type-disadvantages from its inherent Normal typing, as well as helping compensate for Kecleon poor speed.(3) How does Sucker Punch help? Normal's only weakness is Fighting, you turn into a Dark-type and you still are weak to Fighting. What about Fake Out? I would much rather see Shadow Sneak and Fake Out mentioned here as examples instead.
  • It also has an unfortunately moderate Attack stat that allows it to be walled by general physical walls like Altaria or Gourgeist-Super, but Ice Beam helps circumvent these issues somewhat. (5)
  • Kecleon, unlike its competitor Komala, is horribly vulnerable to status and is crippled by both poison and burn.(4B)
Kecleon also faces competition from AV Bouffalant and Vigoroth also a specially bulky Normal-type. Komala and Bouffalant can also diversify their sets such as CB, Z-Move, and SubToxic. Kecleon on the other hand is kinda one-dimensional. These bullet points also seem way out of order. I put numbers next to the end of each for what order I think they should go in. Combine 4A and 4B into one cohesive idea of Kecleon competing with Komala.

[SET]
name: Bulky Mixed Attacker
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Shadow Sneak
move 3: Drain Punch
move 4: Ice Beam / Sucker Punch / Fake Out

4 Unused EVs

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Knock Off is Kecleon's most powerful move in nearly all situations, and provides a ton of usefulness as it is able to remove items, including the popular Eviolite on the non-fully evolved Pokemon such as Mareanie and Bronzor and... Knock Off also pops the Colbur Berry on mons such as Geist-XL... that inhabit ZU.
  • Shadow Sneak is a useful priority attack that allows Kecleon to revenge kill weakened foes. It also disrupts Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting and Monferno due to Protean. Uh, Silvally-Fighting immediately goes for Shadow Claw right after, and Monferno goes for Flare Blitz every time to take advantage of Kecleon's low Defense stat and Shadow Sneak being relatively weak even with Protean STAB.
  • Drain Punch has excellent synergy with Knock Off and gives Kecleon some passive recovery. Mention that our Fairy-types such as Mawile and Mr. Mime still take a chunk.
  • Ice Beam allows Kecleon to deal with physically defensive Pokemon like Gabite, Altaria, and Gourgeist-Super, which normally would post a large issue to it.
Set Details
========
  • 252 EVs are used to most efficiently and effectively improve Kecleon's bulk. (There has been a general consensus that max EVs in a stat is just fluff to the analysis)
  • 100 Special Attack EVs allow Kecleon to 2HKO Gourgeist-Super with Ice Beam and OHKO physically defensive Altaria after Stealth Rock damage, as well as OHKOing most defensive Gabite sets.
  • The remaining EVs are placed into Attack with a Brave nature to not compromise any bulk or power and doesn't affect Kecleon's already mediocre speed.
  • An Assault Vest helps Kecleon eat up most special attacks Mention some important calcs that with an Assault Vest, allows Kecleon to surivive or not get 2hko'd or something.
  • Protean is a fantastic ability that changes Kecleon's typing with its moves, which also gives them a STAB boost. How does this allow Kecleon to check things as it changes its type?
  • Alternatively, a Life Orb can be used for more power, but at the cost of significant special bulk and it tends to chip Kecleon down even faster. I would either slash Life Orb onto the main set or move this down to OO.
Mention that sets utilizing Sucker Punch or Fake Out can utilize those 100 SpA EVs elsewhere, as well as being able to afford to run Adamant. Again 4 Unused EVs, put'em somewhere.

Usage Tips
========

  • Kecleon should be used as an all-purpose special tank throughout the game.
  • Knock Off can be freely used throughout the early game as it is Kecleon's most powerful attack and can remove items.
  • Drain Punch should be used when super effective or if Kecleon is in need of some recovery.
  • Protean should be abused to the fullest, such as using Shadow Sneak in front of a Fighting-type so it will be immune to its super effective attack. Kecleon can also use its pitiful speed to its advantage in some cases, such as when facing a choice-locked Normal-type like Chatot, which it can Shadow Sneak to become immune to its Normal-type attack and then Drain Punch or Knock Off on the next turn as the Normal-type will likely outspeed and Kecleon will still retain its immunity. This process can be repeated if necessary. Chatot may not be the best example, as it can just U-turn or manually switch out of Kecleon into an appropriate check. Chatot doesnt wanna use Boomburst against a healthy bulky AV Sp Def Kecleon. No way!
  • Kecleon's health needs to be preserved if it has many Special Attackers to check throughout the match, so sending it in recklessly on status and hazards is unadvised. Clarify this bullet point to more clearly state that Kecleon doesnt have access to reliable recovery when holding an AV, and therefore trying to take on multiple Special Attackers can leave it at extremely low health.
Team Options
========
  • Kecleon appreciates physical tanks like Altaria, Golem, and Gourgeist-Super that can soak up physical attacks for it. Golem is particularly useful for its ability to set Stealth Rocks which help wear down opponents for Kecleon. Mention additional hazard setters such as Crustle
  • In return, Kecleon can tank special attacks for these Pokemon. Combine with last bullet point. Altaria already has quite a nice Sp Def stat.
  • Special Wallbreakers like Beheeyem and Simisear can help break through some of the physical walls such as? that bother Kecleon.
  • Pokemon with Heal Bell, like some Granbull and Grumpig sets, can help keep Kecleon healthy despite the fact that it's an unconventional move in ZU.
  • Status absorbers like Mareanie or Floatzel are good teammates for the same reason. Is Floatzel really a status absorber? Several variants of Floatzel utilize Life Orb, so being Toxic'd or paralyzed sucks for it.
  • Kecleon greatly appreciates hazard removal from the likes of Swanna, Altaria, Sandslash, and others, as it is easily worn down and entry hazards only further decreases Kecleon's lifespan. Forces Kecleon to click Drain Punch more.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • A Specially Defensive set with Stealth Rock and Recover can be used, however this set tends to be extremely passive and often ineffective. This set has the ability to run Color Change as well to help deal with special breakers such as? and Rain Offense teams. I would break off Color Change into its own bullet point for now. Mention that Rain teams are kinda few and far between.
  • Fire Blast can be run to hit Mawile while still hitting Gourgeist-Super Fire Blast also hits Grass-types such as Leafeon, Tangela, and Abomasnow. Mention that it can still hit these relevant threats too, but is generally inferior coverage to Ice Beamwhy?.
  • Power-Up Punch can boost Kecleon's attack to help it break its checks such as? easier and can even sweep unprepared teams mention how having multiple priority options helps it clean up.
I would potentially add Trick Room here, as its a decent OTR user.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Status**: Kecleon is easily worn down and Toxic is particularly devastating as it severely limits Kecleon's ability to perform its duty of checking special attackers throughout the game. Being burned wears down Kecleon, although not as quickly as Toxic, but will halve Kecleon's attack and rendering it all but useless. Give some examples of Toxic, Will-o-Wisp, and Scald users.

**Fighting-Types**: Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting and Monferno can break Kecleon with their powerful Fighting-type attacks, but Kecleon can use Shadow Sneak to help circumvent some of these issues. Not really, for the same reasons I mentioned above

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Kecleon is threatened by powerful physical attackers like Swords Dance Abomasnow and physicalyou said physical attackers, its understood Floatzel is physical Floatzel variants which can take advantage of Kecleon's mediocre defense stat.

**Entry Hazards**: Along with Status, entry hazards such as Stealth Rocks, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes wear Kecleon down and make checking special attackers significantly more difficult.Also mention lack of recovery options outside of Drain Punch. Mention users of Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes users

Overview
  • I'd say fantastic is overstating it. It's pretty good, but not amazing by any means.
  • Specify that it's extremely specially bulky. It's physical bulk is pretty shit.
  • Whether Comatose > Protean in general is very debatable, so clarify it's a better ability for their role.
  • Mention somewhere that its movepool is really good. Like, really good. Even if it only runs Knock Off and Drain Punch as real attack moves, that is fantastic neutral coverage.
Set
  • Switch the order of Shadow Sneak and Drain Punch. Strong moves before priority moves.
Moves
  • Switch order of Shadow Sneak and Drain Punch
  • Knock Off is only stronger than Drain Punch if the target has an item. In many cases, clicking Drain Punch is the better option. As such, I don't agree with saying it's 'Kecleon's most powerful move in nearly all situations'. Instead, say it's Kecleon's most useful move due to the utility it offers.
  • Mention example of Pokemon Drain Punch hits that Knock Off does little damage to (Dark-types, especially Silv-Dark, are the most notable). You can also extend this by mentioning that Knock Off nails the Ghost- and Psychic-types that resist DPunch.
Set Details
  • Changing the nature to Modest if you remove Ice Beam seems unsmart.
  • It does affect Kecleon's mediocre Speed, it's effect is just irrelevant. Change the wording a bit.
  • Make sure to group the two item options together.
Usage Tips
  • Try to add some more to this, especially the Protean point. You can mention that Silvally-Fighting usually runs SClaw so you can't just blindly Shadow Sneak it, you can mention that Monferno is just gonna nuke it with Flare Blitz, you can mention to be very careful around Pursuit trappers like Silv-Dark when using SSneak. In general, there should be a point about avoiding physical hits at all times because its phys bulk is bad.
  • I'd also like to see some examples of special attackers it can be switched into.
Team Options
  • When I think Heal Bell, I think Altaria and Lickilicky, not Granbull and Grumpig. I get you aren't pairing Licklicky with Kecleon, but a lack of an Alt mention is weird.
  • Floatzel is not a status absorber, especially when Kecleon especially hates Toxic. Mention Alt here again. Alt is just a really good partner.
Other Options
  • Explain why Color Change is usually not better than Protean, even on SpDef sets. I'd also go more in depth as to why it does anything at all since it's not immediately obvious to a new player.
  • Trick Room should be mentioned here, both as team support and for OTR.
Checks and Counters
  • Granbull is like, the hardest Kecleon counter in the world. It runs a Z-Crystal so Knock Off does nothing and it resists both moves and it has Intimidate. There should be a Fairy-types header that also includes Mawile. You could even include Mr. Mime because Psyshock, although that kinda just gets destroyed by Sneak.
  • You mentioned in the overview that fat physical walls kinda stop Kecleon in its tracks, so you might wanna add that, although I understand if you don't since Ice Beam targets most examples.
  • Combine the Status and Entry Hazard into a single header **Residual Damage** as they function quite similarly.
I know this seems like a lot, but a lot of it is small nitpicks about examples. It was pretty good, nice job. QC 1/3

  • Kecleon is a good bulky attacker in the tier with near-exclusive access to the ability Protean.

  • Kecleon has access to Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch, which are great priority moves that can help deal with Kecleon's type-disadvantages from its inherent Normal typing, as well as helping compensate for Kecleon poor speed.
  • Kecleon's movepool is absolutely fantastic, boasting things like Knock Off, Drain Punch, Fire Blast, Ice Beam, Fake Out, and countless other options. This is probably more properly placed before the point about priority since it starts by taking about its movepool. It seems to read well if it starts by talking about Protean, its movepool, and priority options in that order style.
  • However, Kecleon suffers from competition from Komala, another bulky Normal-type with a similar movepool, but with a better ability and access to more options like U-turn and Rapid Spin. Kecleon, unlike its competitor Komala, is horribly vulnerable to status and is crippled by both poison and burn.
  • Kecleon also faces competition from Bouffalant as a bulky Normal-type, but both Bouffalant and Komala can diversify their sets while Kecleon is generally pretty one dimensional. There's merit to comparing Kecleon with the other normals, but only in a way that really explains the idea of when it's warranted to use it on teams over any of the others. The main thing is that it's an AV user with a nice blend of priority and offensive coverage that neither of the two can achieve, letting it threaten balance well (breaking through Gourgeist, Bronzor, Altaria, etc even with AV) all while maintaining its solid specially sponging utility and making room for priority. It helps to explain the difference between them in that way since that's key to identifying how and why it can be used over them. I also don't consider "one-dimensional" to be the right term for it.
  • It has an unfortunately moderate Attack stat that allows it to be walled by general physical walls like Altaria or Gourgeist-Super, but Ice Beam helps circumvent these issues somewhat. I'm skeptical about this point only because I personally can't justify running AV without IB since otherwise that takes away a lot of why I'd use it over AV Komala/Bouff
  • Despite its shortcomings, Kecleon is able to set itself apart with Protean and the ability to run mixed sets to help break through some things that would normally beat it. However, as a bulky attacker, Comatose is still a better option making Komala generally more suited for the role. The bolded point where I talk about how it should be compared to Kec/Bouff can be all merged together since making multiple points about it seems fluff
other negative points are its bad speed making it reliant on priority, and very poor physical bulk
[SET]
name: Bulky Mixed Attacker
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Drain Punch
move 3: Shadow Sneak
move 4: Ice Beam / Sucker Punch / Fake Out Would strongly advise deslashing these two for meta-related reasons. On paper, Gourgeist, Phys Def Altaria, and friends are usually the ones stopping the other AV normals from doing much else, so Kecleon always having IB is encouraged, since it's the one AV user that can nab koes vs them and more.

  • 100 Special Attack EVs allow Kecleon to 2HKO Gourgeist-Super with Ice Beam and OHKO physically defensive Altaria after Stealth Rock damage, as well as OHKOing most defensive Gabite sets.
  • If not using Ice Beam, then 96 EVs can be placed into Attack and 4 into another stat and the nature can be changed to Adamant.
  • The remaining EVs are placed into Attack with a Brave nature to not compromise any bulk or power and doesn't relevantly change the level Kecleon's already mediocre speed.

  • Alternatively, a Life Orb can be used for more power, but at the cost of significant special bulk and it tends to chip Kecleon down even faster. OO as it doesn't really work with this particular set/spread.
Usage Tips
========

  • Kecleon should be used as an all-purpose special tank throughout the game, as it is able to switch into Pokemon like Oricorio, Raichu, and Simipour somewhat easily. Raichu and Simipour are ambiguous examples, given that their boosting sets technically function as things that get past mons like Kecleon (although kec can play around Z-Focus Blast attempts at +2 with Protean Shadow Sneak). It's worth noting that Kecleon can mess with Kadabra's Counter thanks to Shadow Sneak, and other Pokemon weak to it include Mr. Mime. Otherwise, Pokemon like Zeb, Scarf chatot, special abomasnow, and certain silvallys work too.
  • Kecleon's physical bulk is bad, and taking physical hits should be avoided if at all possible.
Kecleon can also use its speed to its advantage in some cases, such as when facing a choice-locked Normal-type like Chatot, which it can Shadow Sneak to become immune to its Normal-type attack and then Drain Punch or Knock Off on the next turn as the Normal-type will likely outspeed and Kecleon will still retain its immunity. This process can be repeated if necessary.
  • However, Silvally-Fighting runs Shadow Claw so it needs to be careful, and it takes a lot from the relatively uncommon Flare Blitz Monferno (I'm not sure how relevant it is to talk about the Monerno example) . It also needs to watch out for Pursuit if it has become a Ghost-type from Shadow Sneak and is lacking Sucker Punch.
  • Kecleon's health needs to be preserved if it has many Special Attackers to check throughout the match, so sending it in recklessly on status and hazards is unadvised. It seems worthwhile to combine this with the point about switching into what it is Kecleon is meant to switch in on.
Team Options
========
  • Kecleon appreciates physical tanks like Altaria, Golem, Crustle and Gourgeist-Super that can soak up physical attacks for it. Golem and Crustle are particularly useful for their ability to set Stealth Rocks which help wear down opponents for Kecleon.
  • In return, Kecleon can tank special attacks for these Pokemon.
  • Special Wallbreakers like Beheeyem and Simisear can help break through some of the physical walls that bother Kecleon.
  • Pokemon with Heal Bell, like some Granbull and Altaria sets, can help keep Kecleon healthy despite the fact that it's an unconventional move in ZU.
  • Status absorbers like Mareanie, or Altaria are good teammates for the same reason.
  • Kecleon greatly appreciates hazard removal from the likes of Swanna, Altaria, Sandslash, and others, as it is easily worn down and entry hazards only further decreases Kecleon's lifespan and force it to use Drain Punch more often. If you want to outline much of Altaria's merit in being a useful teammate (great fighting check too), that's perfectly legitimate. It's just usually better if you put them together rather than in multiple bullet points.
Golem checks are appreciated, since Kecleon dislikes being outsped by WP/CB Golem and phys def variants are tanky while dealing a lot of damage back+can pressure a bit w/ toxic.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • A Specially Defensive set with Stealth Rock and Recover can be used, however this set tends to be extremely passive and often ineffective. This set has the ability to run Color Change as well to help deal with special breakers and Rain Offense teams, despite Color Change being generally inferior as it reduces Kecleon's already mediocre offensive presence.
  • Fire Blast can be run to hit Mawile and Leafeon harder while still hitting Gourgeist-Super, but is generally inferior coverage to Ice Beam for its ability to hit things like Altaria and Gabite.
  • Power-Up Punch can boost Kecleon's attack to help it break its checks easier and can even sweep unprepared teams.
  • Trick Room can be used to abuse Kecleon's low speed or provide additional team support, however Kecleon will be losing an already sought after coverage slot and leaves it vulnerable to attack.
- Hasty 228 Speed is a thing to outspeed Adamant Offensive Golem and Granbull, and with Life Orb Ice Beam + at least 116 SpA IVs, it OHKOes Golem w/ SR and 2HKOs the latter (w/ SR). It's relevant because it eliminates Kecleon's problem with being slower than them and being forced to trade or die to them while luring them simultaneously.
- Offensive LO sets with Toxic are solid because of its coverage to beat the Heal Bell users in Lickilicky and Altaria, letting it effectively stallbreak.
- Otherwise, I'd opt for Sucker Punch and Fake Out here.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-Types**: Fairy-types like Granbull and Mawile have high Physical Defense and take very little from Kecleon's primary damaging moves. The most common two also have Intimidate, which reduce Kecleon's offensive power even further. Even Mr. Mime can cause issues as it runs Psyshock to hit Kecleon's weak physical Defense stat, though it generally gets destroyed by Shadow Sneak.

**Residual Damge.**: Kecleon is easily worn down and Toxic is particularly devastating as it severely limits Kecleon's ability to perform its duty of checking special attackers throughout the game. Being burned wears down Kecleon, although not as quickly as Toxic, but will halve Kecleon's attack and rendering it all but useless. Along with Status, entry hazards such as Stealth Rocks, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes wear Kecleon down and make checking special attackers significantly more difficult.

**Fighting-Types**: Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting and Monferno can break Kecleon with their powerful Fighting-type attacks, but Kecleon can use Shadow Sneak to help circumvent some of these issues.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Kecleon is threatened by powerful physical attackers like Swords Dance Abomasnow and physical Floatzel variants which can take advantage of Kecleon's mediocre defense stat. Golem is important to talk about too for reasons outlined in my comment in team options -- each set outspeed Kecleon, CB OHKOes, WP beats it 1v1, and Phys Def can pivot into any one attack as long as it's not IB and deal a lot of damage in return. Offensive sets don't like switching into directly though, but they can in theory come in on one Ice Beam and threaten it even at full considering that WP boosts its Attack at +2 and OHKOes afterwards.

[OVERVIEW]
Kecleon is a good bulky attacker in the tier with near-exclusive access to the ability Protean. Kecleon is extremely specially bulky and is able to naturally check most of the Special Attackers in the tier due to its high natural Special Defense further boosted by an Assault Vest. It's movepool is absolutely fantastic, boasting moves like Knock Off, Drain Punch, Fire Blast, Ice Beam, Fake Out, and countless other options. It has access to Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch, which are great priority moves that can help deal with Kecleon's type-disadvantages from its inherent Normal typing, as well as helping compensate for Kecleon's poor speed. However, it suffers from competition from Komala, another bulky Normal-type with a similar movepool, but with a better ability and access to different options like U-turn and Rapid Spin. Kecleon, unlike its competitor Komala, is horribly vulnerable to status and is crippled by both poison and burn. Kecleon also faces competition from Bouffalant as a bulky Normal-type, but both Bouffalant and Komala can diversify their sets while Kecleon is generally pretty one dimensional. Kecleon sets itself apart with its access to priority and STAB offensive coverage that allows it to threaten balance while still being able to soak up hits. It has an unfortunately moderate Attack stat that allows it to be walled by general physical walls like Altaria or Gourgeist-Super, but Ice Beam helps circumvent these issues somewhat. Despite its shortcomings, Kecleon is able to set itself apart with Protean and the ability to run mixed sets to help break through some things that would normally beat it. However, as a bulky attacker, Comatose is still a better option making Komala generally more suited for the role.

Moves
========
Knock Off is Kecleon's most powerful move in many situations, and provides a ton of usefulness as it is able to remove items, including the popular Eviolite on the non-fully evolved Pokemon, such as Mareanie and Bronzor, that inhabit ZU. Drain Punch has excellent synergy with Knock Off, able to hit Dark-types like Silvally-Dark, and gives Kecleon some passive recovery. A neutral Drain Punch is more powerful than a neutral Knock Off if the target is not holding an item.Shadow Sneak is a useful priority attack that allows Kecleon to revenge kill weakened foes. It also disrupts Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting and Monferno due to Protean. Ice Beam allows Kecleon to deal with physically defensive Pokemon like Gabite, Altaria, and Gourgeist-Super, which normally would post a large issue to it. Sucker Punch can be used as a stronger, albeit less reliable form of priority. Fake Out can help wear down opponents more, but is only able to be used on the first turn out.

Set Details
========
100 Special Attack EVs allow Kecleon to 2HKO Gourgeist-Super with Ice Beam and OHKO physically defensive Altaria after Stealth Rock damage, as well as OHKOing most defensive Gabite sets. If not using Ice Beam, then 96 EVs can be placed into Attack and 4 into another stat and the nature can be changed to Adamant. The remaining EVs are placed into Attack with a Brave nature to not compromise any bulk or power and doesn't relevantly change the level Kecleon's already mediocre speed. An Assault Vest helps Kecleon eat up most special attacks. Protean is a fantastic ability that changes Kecleon's typing with its moves, which also gives them a STAB boost.

Usage Tips
========

Kecleon should be used as an all-purpose special tank throughout the game, as it is able to switch into Pokemon like Oricorio, Zebstrika, and Scarf Chatot somewhat easily. Kecleon's physical bulk is poor, and taking physical hits should be avoided if at all possible. Knock Off can be freely used throughout the early game as it is Kecleon's most powerful attack and can remove items. Drain Punch should be used when super effective or if Kecleon is in need of some recovery. Protean should be abused to the fullest, such as using Shadow Sneak in front of a Fighting-type so it will be immune to its super effective attack. It can also use its speed to its advantage in some cases, such as when facing a choice-locked Normal-type like Chatot, which it can Shadow Sneak to become immune to its Normal-type attack and then Drain Punch or Knock Off on the next turn as the Normal-type will likely outspeed and Kecleon will still retain its immunity. This process can be repeated if necessary. However, Silvally-Fighting runs Shadow Claw so it needs to be careful, and it takes a lot from the relatively uncommon Flare Blitz Monferno. It also needs to watch out for Pursuit if it has become a Ghost-type from Shadow Sneak and is lacking Sucker Punch. Pursuit from what? If there aren't any relevant examples I'd remove this point. Kecleon's health needs to be preserved if it has many Special Attackers to check throughout the match, so sending it in recklessly on status and hazards is unadvised.

Team Options
========
Kecleon appreciates physical tanks like Altaria, Golem, Crustle and Gourgeist-Super that can soak up physical attacks for it. Golem and Crustle are particularly useful for their ability to set Stealth Rocks which help wear down opponents for Kecleon. Kecleon greatly appreciates hazard removal from the likes of Swanna, Altaria, Sandslash, and others, as it is easily worn down and entry hazards only further decreases Kecleon's lifespan and force it to use Drain Punch more often. Golem checks, like Gourgeist-XL and Leafeon, are appreciated as Kecleon dislikes taking damage from offensive variants or a Toxic from defensive ones.

Would also add examples of Pokemon that appreciate Kecleon's ability to beat bulky stuff like Bronzor, Alt, Gourg-XL, etc.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
A Life Orb set can be used for more power, but at the cost of significant special bulk and it tends to chip Kecleon down even faster. A Specially Defensive set with Stealth Rock and Recover can be used, however this set tends to be extremely passive and often ineffective. This set has the ability to run Color Change as well to help deal with special breakers and Rain Offense teams, despite Color Change being generally inferior as it reduces Kecleon's already mediocre offensive presence. Fire Blast can be run to hit Mawile and Leafeon harder while still hitting Gourgeist-Super, but is generally inferior coverage to Ice Beam for its ability to hit things like Altaria and Gabite. Power-Up Punch can boost Kecleon's attack to help it break its checks easier and can even sweep unprepared teams. Trick Room can be used to abuse Kecleon's low speed or provide additional team support, however Kecleon will be losing an already sought after coverage slot and leaves it vulnerable to attack. 228 Speed EVs with a Hasty nature can be used to outspeed Adamant Golem and Granbull, and with Life Orb Ice Beam and a minimum of 116 SpA EVs, it is able to OHKO Golem after Stealth Rock damage and 2HKOs the latter. Toxic can be used to help break bulkier teams because of Kecleon's ability to threaten Heal Bell users like Altaria and Lickilicky.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-Types**: Fairy-types like Granbull and Mawile have high Physical Defense and take very little from Kecleon's primary damaging moves. The most common two also have Intimidate, which reduce Kecleon's offensive power even further. Even Mr. Mime can cause issues as it runs Psyshock to hit Kecleon's weak physical Defense stat, though it generally gets destroyed by Shadow Sneak. and Trick

Golem is extremely threatening as well, as it usually will outspeed and deal a lot of damage, with Choice Band Golem able to OHKO Kecleon.
