Gen 1 Kingler (NU) [QC 2/2] [GP 2/2]

:kingler: He's coming :kingler:

[OVERVIEW]

Swords Dance Kingler is the strongest wallbreaker and a potent sweeper in RBY NU. At +2, Hyper Beam can OHKO threats like Mr. Mime, Rapidash, and Poliwhirl. Additionally, Body Slam followed by Hyper Beam will KO any Normal-neutral foe in the tier. Rock-types are washed away by Crabhammer, a very powerful STAB move that will almost always score a critical hit. Crabhammer easily OHKOes Golem and 2HKOes Kabutops. Kingler also has decent physical bulk, avoiding 2HKOs from some strong physical attacks such as Golem's Earthquake and opposing +2 Kingler's Body Slam. This allows Kingler to emergency check such threats.

However, Kingler is very slow for RBY NU, outsped by a myriad of prominent offensive threats in the tier. This means it requires extensive paralysis support from teammates to safely sweep and is ruined by getting paralyzed itself. Also, while Crabhammer's sheer power makes up for Kingler's low Special offensively, even neutral special attacks such as Mr. Mime's Psychic 2HKO it. Kingler's weakness to Electric means it is forced out by certain threats such as Thunderbolt Nidoking and Clefable.

[SET]
name: The Cringe Crab (Swords Dance)
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Body Slam
move 3: Hyper Beam
move 4: Crabhammer

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=========

Swords Dance boosts Kingler's already great Attack to dizzying heights, allowing it to deal extreme damage to most foes. It also allows Kingler to reapply paralysis Speed drops to outspeed foes in certain situations where it otherwise could not. Body Slam is a very powerful attack after a boost, and threatens switch-ins with paralysis, which helps Kingler sweep and support its team. Hyper Beam is an outstanding finishing move, dealing massive damage to almost anything and outright OHKOing frailer foes at +2. Crabhammer allows Kingler to hit Rock-types very hard. Crabhammer OHKOing Golem and slamming Kabutops is particularly fantastic.

Kingler's low Speed means it highly appreciates paralysis support from teammates such as Mr. Mime and Clefable. Kingler also appreciates teammates that can switch into Thunder Wave and Thunderbolt, such as Golem and Nidoking. Early-game, Kingler can wallbreak with Crabhammer and spread paralysis with Body Slam. If Kingler is saved for late-game, it can easily sweep a weakened and paralyzed team with Swords Dance-boosted attacks.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Kingler should generally not run any other moves than the four listed in the set. It can attempt to run Stomp over Body Slam to flinch foes, but Stomp is much weaker than Body Slam and makes Kingler even more reliant on its team to spread paralysis. Blizzard may sound decent, but it does not actually hit anything harder than Kingler's Normal-type moves due to Kingler's low Special. Substitute might sound enticing; however, while Kingler may have decent physical bulk, it is once again held back by its bad Special, which causes Substitute to usually be a waste. Also, Substitute does not address Kingler's crippling weakness to Thunder Wave.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-type Attacks**: Electrode, Nidoking, and Mr. Mime outspeed Kingler and can 2HKO it with Thunderbolt, with Electrode even having a chance to OHKO, further bolstered by its high critical hit rate. Magneton, while slower than Kingler, can almost always take a boosted Hyper Beam from full health and will always OHKO Kingler in return. Clefable is slower than Kingler and takes heavy damage from boosted Body Slam, but it can threaten to 2HKO Kingler.

**Paralysis**: Thunder Wave users such as Clefable and Mr. Mime can dash any chance of Kingler sweeping late-game. Getting paralyzed means Kingler can no longer outspeed some of the slowest Pokemon in RBY NU or outspeed faster paralyzed foes.

**Faster Special Attackers**: Kingler's poor Special means even moderately strong special attacks like Mr. Mime's Psychic 2HKO it. Even Moltres's Fire Blast, which Kingler resists, will always 3HKO it. Its low Speed exacerbates this issue, as it can't outspeed most of the threats that threaten to KO it.

**Burns**: All the Fire Blast users in NU mean that Kingler, as a Water-type, will inevitably switch into a few of them. However, Fire Blast's 30.1% chance to burn can greatly hinder Kingler's sweeping prowess if it gets unlucky, forcing Kingler to use Swords Dance to negate the burn Attack drop. However, a burned Kingler can still use Crabhammer unhindered.

It's a WIP, but some minor commentary.

For the Overview, keep the calcs to the more impressive ones. Be more exhaustive in set details.

And while Cringe Crab memes are the best things to grace mankind I'm not sure if it's good to note it in the Overview. Maybe we can sneak it into the set name but I'm not sure what the QC team wants.

New NU analyses were set to be minis, but if you want to do the full, go ahead.

Define "impressive" calcs, not really sure which ones you mean by that.
I removed the Cringe Crab mention from the overview and replaced it with just Kingler, lol. Maybe I got a bit carried away.
Kingler is definitely a viable mon and will end up getting a full at some point, so why not right now, you know?

The ones that would hook the reader and sell them on using it.

It's mainly with the intention of making easy-to-update analyses considering its nature as a developing metagame, but if you want to go ahead with a full, by all means, do so! Just making sure you know what you're doing.

Hello! I am here to give feedback on the Cringe Crab.
Dapper Krab.png

Crabhammer easily OHKOs Golem and has a favorable chance to OHKO Aerodactyl, and it 2HKOs Kabutops
Just to make this flow better, perhaps "Crabhammer easily OHKOs Golem, has a favorable chance to OHKO Aerodactyl, and 2HKOs Kabutops". The double "and" just throws it off for me personally.

Also, Substitute does not block status in RBY, meaning Kingler is still very susceptible to Thunder Wave even when behind a Substitute.
Technically, Substitute does block Toxic and Confuse Ray (Toxic being run on multiple Pokemon in this tier), so perhaps "Also, Substitute does not block paralysis or sleep in RBY, meaning......"

However, Fire Blast's 30% chance to burn can completely disable Kingler's sweeping prowess if it gets unlucky. However, a burned Kingler can still use Crabhammer unhindered.
Don't really like the double "However" here, so perhaps replace "However, a burned Kingler can still use Crabhammer unhindered." with "On the bright side, a burned Kingler can still use Crabhammer unhindered."? Or something of the sorts.

Overall extremely solid analysis, pretty much all of my critiques are very small. Implement these and i'll likely hand out a QC.

Edit: Gave a QC 1/2

amQCing this since there are a few things I noticed. You seem to forget just how much SD helps Kingler in some areas, so a lot of this is targeting that. Remember that it reapplies major status stat drops and lets you ignore the burn Attack drop, both of which are huge for Kingler and are a good part of what lets it succeed.

Kingler is the strongest wallbreaker and a potent sweeper in RBY NU, possessing Swords Dance and a gargantuan base 130 Attack. At +2, Hyper Beam can OHKO threats like Mr. Mime, Rapidash, and Poliwhirl. Additionally, (flow) Body Slam followed by Hyper Beam will KO any non-resist in the tier. Rock-types that can resist the one-two punch of Kingler's Normal-type moves are washed away by Crabhammer, Kingler's very powerful STAB move that will almost always score a critical hit. Crabhammer easily OHKOs Golem, has a favorable chance to OHKO Aerodactyl, and 2HKOs Kabutops. (These calcs may be better for the set details) Kingler also has decent physical bulk, able to stomach some strong physical attacks such as Golem's Earthquake and opposing Kingler's boosted Body Slam, as it is not 2HKOd by either. This allows Kingler to switch into or be an emergency check to such threats if needed, and also makes it easier for Kingler to find opportunities to set up.

However, Kingler is not without its drawbacks. It is very slow for NU, outsped by a myriad of prominent offensive threats in the tier. This means it requires extensive paralysis support from teammates before it can safely sweep. This also means getting paralyzed is a death sentence for Kingler. and it will lose all hope of sweeping if it is hit by Thunder Wave or the like. (Not quite true imo, I explain this in a comment in set details. It's definitely much harder, but "all hope" isn't quite right.) Also, while Kingler's low Special is made up for offensively by the sheer power of Crabhammer, it can be a pain to deal with on the defensive side, with even neutral special attacks such as Mr. Mime's Psychic 2HKOing Kingler. Kingler's weakness to Electric means it is forced out by certain threats that carry Electric-type coverage, such as Thunderbolt from Nidoking and Clefable.

Hyper Beam is an outstanding finisher move, dealing massive damage to almost anything and outright OHKOing frailer opponenets foes at +2. Crabhammer allows Kingler to hit Rock-types very hard, which would otherwise be able to stand up to the onslaught of boosted Body Slams and Hyper Beams. Crabhammer OHKOing Golem and slamming Aerodactyl and Kabutops hard is a particularly fantastic asset, as they would otherwise check Kingler handily. However, Crabhammer is unfortunately not 100% accurate, and missing can be detrimental to Kingler. (dex info, GP doesn't like this.)

Swords Dance reapplying paralysis Speed drops isn't noted anywhere, not even in the Overview. While paralysis is definitely an OHKO on this thing, you should really note it, as it makes paralysed Pokemon much less inclined to switch in. If they do come in while Kingler sets up, it's now faster and can just blow them away.

Kingler's low Speed means it highly appreciates paralysis support from teammates such as Mr. Mime and Clefable. Kingler also appreciates teammates that can check Electric-types such as Golem and Nidoking, since they can switch into the Thunder Waves and Thunderbolts that Kingler needs to avoid. Early game, Kingler can be used to wallbreak with Crabhammer and spread paralysis with Body Slam. If Kingler is saved for late game, it is capable of easily sweeping a weakened and paralyzed team with Swords Dance boosted attacks.

It can attempt to run Stomp over Body Slam to flinch opponents, but Stomp is much weaker than Body Slam and makes Kingler even more reliant on its team to spread paralysis. Blizzard may sound like a decent option, but in practice, (AC) it does not actually hit anything harder than Kingler's Normal-type moves due to Kingler's low Special. Also, Substitute does not block paralysis or sleep in RBY, meaning Kingler is still very susceptible to Thunder Wave even when behind a Substitute.

Blizzard + Hyper Beam can 2HKO Dragonair roughly 60% of the time, for what it's worth. You could prolly get away with cutting Substitute, it seems like it would suck on Kingler tbh.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-type Coverage:** Electrode, Nidoking, and Mr. Mime all outspeed Kingler and can 2HKO it with Thunderbolt, with Electrode even having a chance to OHKO further bolstered by its critical hit rate. Magneton, while slower than Kingler, can almost always take a boosted Hyper Beam from full health, and will always OHKO Kingler in return. Finally, Clefable is also slower than Kingler and takes heavy damage from boosted Body Slams, but it can threaten to 2HKO Kingler.

**Paralysis:** Any chance of Kingler sweeping late-game is quickly dashed by Thunder Wave users such as Clefable and Mr. Mime. Getting paralyzed means Kingler can no longer outspeed some of the slower Pokemon in NU, nor can it outspeed faster paralyzed foes. This makes it very hard for Kingler to find opportunities to set up Swords Dance, and along with the chance to not move every turn, makes it almost impossible for Kingler to make advances late-game. (again, it's not completely crippled, it's just...really hurt by it, I guess?)

**Faster Special Attackers:** Kingler's poor Special means even moderately strong special attacks like Mr. Mime's Psychic 2HKO it. This issue is exemplified by its low Speed, as it cannot outspeed the threats that threaten to KO it. Even Moltres's Fire Blast, which Kingler resists, will always 3HKO it.

Swords Dance Kingler is the strongest wallbreaker and a potent sweeper in RBY NU, possessing Swords Dance and a gargantuan base 130 Attack. (base stats are already displayed on the dex page so bringing them up is only useful when immediately contextualized) At +2, Hyper Beam can OHKO threats like Mr. Mime, Rapidash, and Poliwhirl. Additionally, Body Slam followed by Hyper Beam will KO any non-resistant Normal-neutral foe in the tier. Rock-types resisting both are washed away by Crabhammer, Kingler's a very powerful STAB move that will almost always score a critical hit. Crabhammer easily OHKOes Golem and 2HKOes Kabutops. Swords Dance boosts Kingler's already great Attack to dizzying heights, allowing it to deal extreme damage to most foes. It also allows Kingler to reapply paralysis Speed drops to outspeed foes in certain situations where it otherwise could not. Through stat modification errors, it also reapplies paralysis Speed drops, occasionally making Kingler faster than foes. (i had never heard of this before, reworded to be easier to research; note this isn't very helpful without details) Body Slam is a very powerful attack after a boost, (comma) and it can also threatens switch-ins with paralysis, which helps Kingler sweep while also providing good team support and support its team. Hyper Beam is an outstanding finishing move, dealing massive damage to almost anything and outright OHKOing frailer foes at +2. Crabhammer allows Kingler to hit Rock-types very hard, which can stand up to the onslaught of boosted Body Slams and Hyper Beams. Crabhammer OHKOing Golem and slamming Kabutops is particularly fantastic, as they would otherwise check Kingler handily.

Kingler's low Speed means it highly appreciates paralysis support from teammates such as Mr. Mime and Clefable. Kingler also appreciates teammates that can switch into the Thunder Waves and Thunderbolts it needs to avoid Thunder Wave and Thunderbolt, such as Golem and Nidoking. Early-game, Kingler can wallbreak with Crabhammer and spread paralysis with Body Slam. If Kingler is saved for late-game, it can easily sweep a weakened and paralyzed team with Swords Dance-boosted attacks.

Kingler should generally not run any other moves than the four listed in the set. It can attempt to run Stomp over Body Slam to flinch foes, but Stomp is much weaker than Body Slam and makes Kingler even more reliant on its team to spread paralysis. Blizzard may sound decent, but in practice, it does not actually hit anything harder than Kingler's Normal-type moves due to Kingler's low Special. Substitute might sound enticing; however, while Kingler may have decent physical bulk, it is once again held back by its bad Special, which causes Substitute to usually be a waste. Also, Substitute does not address Kingler's crippling weakness to Thunder Wave.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-type Attacks**: Electrode, Nidoking, and Mr. Mime all outspeed Kingler and can 2HKO it with Thunderbolt, with Electrode even having a chance to OHKO, further bolstered by its high critical hit rate. Magneton, while slower than Kingler, can almost always take a boosted Hyper Beam from full health and will always OHKO Kingler in return. Finally, Clefable is also slower than Kingler and takes heavy damage from boosted Body Slam, but it can threaten to 2HKO Kingler.

**Paralysis**: Thunder Wave users such as Clefable and Mr. Mime can quickly dash any chance of Kingler sweeping late-game. Getting paralyzed means Kingler can no longer outspeed some of the slowest Pokemon in RBY NU or outspeed faster paralyzed foes. This makes it very hard for Kingler to set up Swords Dance and, along with the chance to not move every turn, make advances late-game.

**Burns**: All the Fire Blasts running around Blast users in NU mean that Kingler, as a Water-type, will inevitably switch into a few of them. However, Fire Blast's 30.1% chance to burn can greatly hinder Kingler's sweeping prowess if it gets unlucky, forcing Kingler to use Swords Dance to ignore negate the burn Attack drop. However, a burned Kingler can still use Crabhammer unhindered.

GP 2/2
[OVERVIEW]

Kingler also has decent physical bulk, avoiding 2HKOs from some strong physical attacks such as Golem's Earthquake and opposing +2 Kingler's boosted Body Slam. This allows Kingler to switch into or be an emergency check to such threats if needed, as well as making it easier to find opportunities to set up and find more setup opportunities.

However, Kingler is very slow for RBY NU, outsped by a myriad of prominent offensive threats in the tier. This means it requires extensive paralysis support from teammates before it can to safely sweep and is ruined by getting paralyzed itself. This also means getting paralyzed is a death sentence. Also, while Crabhammer's sheer power makes up for Kingler's low Special offensively, nothing does defensively, with even neutral special attacks such as Mr. Mime's Psychic 2HKOing it. Kingler's weakness to Electric means it is forced out by certain threats that carry Electric-type coverage, such as Thunderbolt from Nidoking and Clefable.

Swords Dance boosts Kingler's already great Attack to dizzying heights, allowing it to deal extreme damage to most foes. It also allows Kingler to reapply paralysis Speed drops to outspeed foes in certain situations where it otherwise could not. Mostly implemented this, but two points in particular I disagree with:
However, Kingler is very slow for RBY NU,
I'm inclined to keep the "for RBY NU" part because it is a very important distinction between Kingler in NU and Kingler in OU. Kingler's RBY OU analysis states that "Kingler isn't exactly slow relative to RBY OU either [...] This means it isn't completely reliant on paralysis support and is very capable of mowing down teams without it." However, NU is a faster metagame overall than OU, and there aren't many NU threats that Kingler outspeeds compared to OU where it can outspeed Chansey, Exeggutor, Lax, and many other top tier threats. NU Kingler is far more reliant on paralysis compared to its OU counterpart, so I feel that this point must be made.
It also allows Kingler to reapply paralysis Speed drops to outspeed foes in certain situations where it otherwise could not. Through stat modification errors, it also reapplies paralysis Speed drops, occasionally making Kingler faster than foes. (i had never heard of this before, reworded to be easier to research; note this isn't very helpful without details)
Paralysis reapplication through stat boosting is a core mechanic of RBY and any semi-serious RBY player should know this. I'll admit I'm not as sure on keeping this part the same as the part about Kingler's speed. However, many other RBY analyses reference this mechanic in similar ways I originally did, and I feel it would be strange to suddenly attempt to explain it in further detail in this random NU analysis that will likely mostly be read by experienced players who are interested in such a niche tier. If it's that big of a deal it can be changed, but I personally think it should be kept how it was.

If everything I did is ok, this should be ready to upload!
