On a cold Wednesday afternoon I was tagged and told somebody had set a challenge for somebody to reach top 5 on the SV OU ladder with Klawf hard stall and had put up a 500$ reward for the first person to finish the challenge. As any sane and normal person would, I jumped at this opportunity, and 8 hours later I had completed a challenge that many people thought would take a month. After a few requests I was convinced to write an RMT to walk people through my thought process when building and how I went about completing this challenge. So without further ado here is the story of how Klawf stall topped the SV OU ladder in less than a day.

THE TEAM BUILDING PROCESS

The first mon was obviously the crab. Seeing as I didn't even know this Pokemon existed before this challenge I quickly glanced over it's stats, movepool and abilities and realised one thing: the only redeeming qualities about Klawf was its access to Stealth Rocks and its ability Regenerator, so I decided on using Klawf as the teams Stealth Rock setter, which would potentially free up moveslots on other mons later down the line as well.

In my eyes I think there are only two kinds of distinct stall structures: Toxapex Stalls and Non-Toxapex Stalls. Seeing as Krawf is Ogerpon fodder I decided to go the Toxapex route. Toxapex was the main water resist and provided me with Toxic Spikes for the HO match up so it was an easy decision to add it on.

At this point I'd lie about how I carefully thought out the rest of the team but I really didn't and just copy pasted the backbone I've used on my Ursaluna and Talon/Chomp Stall. I thought this was very much a race against the clock so I stuck with something proven and solid. All the basic necessities are met through the addition of Blissey, Dozo, Corv and Gliscor and that was good enough for me at the time, and seeing how it panned out it seems I was right about standard being good.

Klawf @ Rocky Helmet

- Tera Blast
Originally I was using a thief itemless Klawf set with thief > Tera Blast but I quickly realised that shit was worse than Gingy's sheet record, so I settled on Rocky Helmet Tera Blast Ice Klawf. The main appeal of this set was being able to OHKO SD Gliscor after it took RH chip while knocking off Klawfs Helmet. In an ideal world I'd have run more attack to ensure the OHKO on Max Def Bold Gliscor as well but due to the nature of the challenge it would have been deemed as cheating so unfortunately I was limited in my options. Knock off was a no brainer seeing as besides Stealth Rock it was the only real utility Klawf provided. The next and final option I went for was Brick Break. Klawf had a unique ability to come in on Kingambit and shrug off Kowtow/Ihead due to Regen and its good natural bulk, so I thought I'd abuse this property by giving it a way to finish off chipped Kingambit. An added plus of brick break was breaking screens which was also a nice add on and a reason to use it over High Horsepower. I gave the crab enough speed to outspeed max speed adamant Gambit and dumped the rest in defence.

- Toxic Spikes
Toxapex functions as the teams main water resist and gives me tspikes as I said previously. Toxapex is a very cut and dry mon, it toxics stuff, gets up tspikes and gives you a way to run down the toxic timer because of Regenerator. Tera Grass is the tera of choice because it lets toxapex hard wall SD PowerWhip Wellspring which is usually a big problem for stall. Haze is an important set of Pex's kit seeing as it gives you a way to limit Iron Defence Zama outside of Dondozo as well as more niche threats such as ID Gar and SD Mixed Val. I think Poison Jab > Haze is usable but it also means the before mentioned Pokemon become a bit more troublesome but on the bright side you do gain a way to circumvent random taunts and spread status. The spread of choice was simply max max to better help vs Ogerpon-Wellspring and DD Kyurem/Dnite/RoaringMoon.

Pokemon In Action (+ Digimon) — Blissey used Mega Punch! ~ Arceus Chronicles Ep. 3

Blissey @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Natural Cure

Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
- Soft-Boiled
- Ice Beam
Blissey is the teams main special wall but also gives the team some semblance of a wincon. Due to the rather strict rules of the competition traditional wincons on stall like CM Clef and SD Gliscor were omitted from being used, as such I decided to bend the rules a bit. CM Blissey was still allowed seeing as CM normally only serves a defensive purpose on Blissey, letting it boost up along side Gholdengo/IronMoth/Ragingbolt/Val and 1v1 them. But if you give Blissey Ice beam over the traditional 4th slot move of Stealth Rock (which is possible because of Klawf) it becomes surprisingly difficult to deal with, as Pokemon like Gliscor and Tusk can no longer reliably beat a boosted up Blissey. Ibeam also lets you hit Pokemon like Dragonite and Roaring Moon in more desperate situations which is an added caveat. Shadow ball lets you hit Gholdengo and Gking. Nothing much really to add on: Tl;dr Fat Special wall that can sweep sometimes.

Dondozo (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Avalanche
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
Dondozo is the teams main physical wall and the only reason the team doesn't lose to the fifth most broken Pokemon in SV OU, Kingambit. Avalanche allows Dozo to better check RM and Dnite, as well forcing SD Gliscor to have to Tera vs you if it wants to stay in to burn rest pp. Body press is the preferred choice over curse to actually let Gozo to hit Gambit and Tera Normal Gliscor. No Curse does mean that Tera Ghost Gambit can potentially 1v1 Dozo with enough fallen comrade boosts, but I think this is a fair trade off considering even curse sets can get haxed down. Tera fight is chosen to give Dozo the Kowtow resist as well as giving Dozo a neutral type vs DD Mixed Kyu and Ogerpons.

Corviknight GIF - Corviknight - Discover & Share GIFs

Corviknight @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Pressure
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Def / 120 Spe
Impish Nature
- Brave Bird
- Iron Defense
- Roost
- Defog
Corviknight provides the team with a defogger and also gives the team another knock absorber. Iron Defence lets you boost up along side Kingambit/Dnite/RM/Gliscor and beat them in 1v1s. Brave bird is chosen over body press to give outs vs Tera Ghost Gambit as well as giving Corv an option to hit Ogerpon-Wellspring. Tera Fairy simply gives you a dark/fighting resist in a pinch. The speed lets Corv outspeed max speed adamant Kingambit and the rest is dumped into defence, similar to Klawf.

Image tagged with gliscor, glion, pokemon gif – @axew on Tumblr

Gliscor (F) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 244 HP / 36 Def / 228 SpD
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Protect
- Spikes
Gliscor is the teams status and knock absorber while also providing the team with another knocker and spiker. I opted for no toxic Gliscor and ran EQ in order to give me a Pokemon that could immediately threaten Glimmora, seeing as it could be very annoying with mortal spin and rocks. Originally the Gliscor had Counter over EQ but the tech sadly was kinda bad and only really served its purpose in the lower ends of ladder. Tera Dark was chosen to give the team a future sight immunity that could cover chilly reception + fsight Gking. The spread is simply ripped off of the Smogon analysis and lives an Ivy Cudgel from full from a Wellspring and the rest is dumped into SpDef.

THE LADDERING PROCESS

I think the more interesting part of this RMT is the ladder process. As I said before I was weirdly paranoid that someone would blitz through this challenge kind of like how I did so I started as soon as I heard it went up. Luckily for me I was free that day and had nothing else to do so for the next 8 hours all I did was ladder with a few breaks in between. I think the hardest part of the challenge was actually having the temperament to play multiple games of stall on the same day, especially when you have to start a new alt and you are forced to play ever single game even in low ladder with "hard" stall. Luckily for me stall was the very first play style that ever clicked for me and it sort of became second nature to use. I think the hardest part of this challenge was the 1800-1900 range of ladder. I was facing the most random stall c-team shit like 5 taunters + NP Moltres-G but I tried not to be disheartened and trekked on. Having friends and some of my SPL team watching my run live definitely helped since I knew I wasn't spamming games alone and the human interaction kept me sane during all 75 games of my run.

Lastly I'd like to s/o the new stall cord for setting this challenge up and convincing me to do this RMT. They are currently hosting a 100$ tour as well so make sure to sign up for that: https://discord.gg/EfHVbxYe

I would really LOVE to face this team on ladder man. Funny enough, we are now in a draw (lol)

I really wonder if your crab Squad could Beat my Sunny boys. Amazing team, even if the other pkm are just the basic, making the crab work is impressive. Good job and gratz for the money!
