VGC 21 Landorus-T

:ss/landorus-therian:
[OVERVIEW]

Landorus-T stands out as VGC 2022's best non-Restricted Ground-type attacker, an important role in a metagame dominated by Incineroar, Zacian-C, Regieleki, and many more Pokemon weak to Ground. Intimidate and Fly, for Max Airstream, are both great for its utility. These tools make it a popular check to Groudon and Venusaur cores, as it can hit Venusaur hard and stand up well to almost anything Groudon can throw at it. If it can successfully set up a Swords Dance, it can also sweep entire teams with a well-timed Dynamax. However, Landorus-T is very, very reliant on Dynamax to get much accomplished, as Fly is nearly useless on its own, and Earthquake and Rock Slide are relatively weak without several Attack boosts, so plan accordingly and be careful when bringing Landorus-T with another Pokemon reliant on Dynamax. Landorus-T also struggles against the metagame's numerous Water- and Ice-types like Kyogre, Kyurem-W, Calyrex-I, and Lapras, which can OHKO it even whileit's Dynamaxed. Therefore, partners like Zacian-C and Regieleki are vital to ensuring it can sweep effectively.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Fly
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Swords Dance
item: White Herb / Life Orb / Lum Berry
ability: Intimidate
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* While Earthquake might seem appealing as Landorus-T's strongest Ground move, its main appeal is in the form of Earthquake's main appeal isn't as a standalone STAB move but as a base for a powerful Max Quake, dealing which deals massive damage to even neutral targets like Kyogre, easily OHKOing OHKOes Pokemon weak to Ground like Zacian-C and Regieleki, and boosting its boosts Landorus-T's Special Defense, furthering its longevity.

* Fly is used to grant grants Landorus-T access to Max Airstream, vital for boosting its and its partner's Speed, as well as pressuring Grass-types like Venusaur, Rillaboom, and Amoonguss.

* Rock Slide is Landorus-T's best coverage option, notably hitting Flying-types like Zapdos, Thundurus, and Yveltal, but also enabling weather control with Max Rockfall if necessary.

* Swords Dance is vital for allowing Landorus-T to sweep and counteract Intimidate from Incineroar and opposing Landorus-T.

* White Herb allows Landorus-T to instantly counteract an Attack drop, commonly from Intimidate, Parting Shot from Incineroar, or Max Wyrmwind from Dragon-type Restricted Pokemon. Life Orb grants Landorus-T high immediate power; however, the damage output can drastically suffer when playing against double Intimidate cores. Lum Berry acts as a powerful safety net against Spore from Amoonguss, Sleep Powder from Venusaur, and Burning Jealousy from Incineroar and Torkoal, but it is weaker versus Intimidate and doesn't offer a power boost.

* Landorus-T needs a Jolly nature to outrun Calyrex-S and Zacian-C after a Max Airstream boost.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Landorus-T can run Protect over Swords Dance on Life Orb sets to be safer while not Dynamaxed, but this leaves it without a way to boost its Attack, and thus much more vulnerable to Intimidate. Earth Power can be used on Life Orb sets over Earthquake on teams with Rillaboom, circumventing damage reductions from Grassy Terrain and Intimidate, but this means Max Quake will come off of its much weaker Special Attack. In this case, Swords Dance can still be replaced with Protect. Assault Vest can also be used to boost Landorus-T's special bulk, making it better against Calyrex-S and Hyper Beam Regieleki, but this set is more susceptible to Intimidate with the lack of White Herb and Swords Dance.

[OVERVIEW]

Landorus-T stands out as VGC 2022's best non-Restricted Ground-type attacker, an important role in a metagame dominated by Incineroar, Zacian-C, Regieleki, and many more Pokemon weak to ground. Also in its toolkit are the always-valuable Intimidate and Fly for Max Airstream, allowing it to nerf its foes while(This makes it sound like you do these simultaneously. "and boost" makes more sense I think?) boosting it and its ally's Speed in the process. These traits make it a popular check to Groudon and Venusaur cores, as it can hit Venusaur hard and stand up well to almost anything Groudon can throw at it. If it can successfully set up a Swords Dance, it can also sweep entire teams with a well-timed Dynamax. However, Landorus-T is very, very reliant on Dynamax to get much accomplished, as Fly is nearly useless on its own, and Earthquake and Rock Slide's damage output is relatively unimpressive without several Attack boosts, so plan accordingly and don't bring Landorus-T with another Pokemon reliant on Dynamaxing to be effective.(This wording might make it seem like its a strict rule, when there is sometimes justification to use it as a non-max mon. Perhaps it'd be better to tone down the wording ie "be very careful about bringing it with other max reliant mons".) Landorus-T also struggles against the metagame's numerous Water- and Ice-types like Kyogre, Kyurem-W, Calyrex-I, and Lapras, and can be OHKOed by them even while Dynamaxed. As such, partners like Zacian-C and Regieleki are vital to guarding Landorus-T and ensuring it can sweep effectively.

move 4: Swords Dance

[SET COMMENTS]

* While Earthquake might seem appealing as Landorus-T's strongest Ground move, its main appeal is in the form of a powerful Max Quake, dealing massive damage to even neutral targets like Kyogre and Porygon2, easily OHKOing Pokemon weak to Ground like Zacian-C and Regieleki, and boosting its Special Defense, furthering its longevity.

* Fly is used to grant Landorus-T access to Max Airstream, vital for boosting it and its partner's Speed, as well as pressuring Grass-types like Venusaur, Rillaboom, and Amoonguss.

* Rock Slide is Landorus-T's best coverage option, notably hitting Flying-types like Zapdos, Thundurus, and Yveltal, but also acting as weather control with Max Rockfall if necessary.

* Swords Dance is vital for allowing Landorus-T to facilitate sweeps and counteracting Intimidates from Incineroar and opposing Landorus-T.

* Lum Berry acts as a crucial safety net against Spore, Sleep Powder, and Burning Jealousy,(Should maybe give examples of what uses these moves. I know they were indirectly given earlier, but I think clarity would be good here and Burning Jealousy is a fairly obscure move.) but the power increase from Life Orb is particularly helpful, especially if Landorus-T does not have the time to setup a Swords Dance.

* Landorus-T needs a Jolly nature and 252 Speed EVs to outrun Calyrex-S after a Max Airstream boost.(Technically no, it could run a bit less and still outspeed it. You could specify that a Jolly nature is important to get past Calyrex-S) Thankfully, this is enough, since Landorus-T walls out Regieleki even if it can't outspeed it at +1.(If its not a concern to Landorus in the first place then it doesn't really need to be mentioned)

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Landorus-T can run Protect over Swords Dance to be safer while not Dynamaxed, but this leaves it without a way to boost its Attack, leaving it much more vulnerable to Intimidate.(I think this should only be done on LO sets, an Intimidated Lum Protect Lando is pretty pathetic.) Earth Power can be used over Earthquake on teams with Rillaboom as to not have Landorus-T's Ground move weakened by Grassy Terrain,(I feel like avoiding Intimidate is also worth mentioning and would you really ever run Lum Earth Power? I think Earth Power really wants LO's extra kick.) but this means its Max Quake is going to come off its much weaker Special Attack. In this case, Swords Dance can be replaced with Protect as well.

Basically all of these are just judgement calls really so if you don't make some of them it's fine.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Fly
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Swords Dance / Protect (I've seen enough Protect, on LO sets specifically, that I think it's worth a mention. Also it's actually more common than SD on Pikalytics)
item: Lum Berry / Life Orb Life Orb / Lum Berry (LO is more common according to Pikalytics and might also be in tournament play as well I think. But if you have a reason for Lum first it's fine, I just feel Lum is a bit more team dependent and LO is generically good.)
ability: Intimidate
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* While Earthquake might seem appealing as Landorus-T's strongest Ground move, its main appeal is in the form of a powerful Max Quake, dealing massive damage to even neutral targets like Kyogre and Porygon2 (Why P2? It's one of the very few Pokemon that doesn't get 2HKO'd by Quake, which isn't massive damage), easily OHKOing Pokemon weak to Ground like Zacian-C and Regieleki, and boosting its Special Defense, furthering its longevity.

* Swords Dance is vital for allowing Landorus-T to facilitate sweeps and counteracting Intimidates from Incineroar and opposing Landorus-T (I know we don't normally mention Protect but given the Main Set mention I'd add in it's value on LO sets).

* Lum Berry acts as a crucial safety net against Spore from Amoonguss, Sleep Powder from Venusaur, and Burning Jealousy from Incineroar and Torkoal, but the power increase from Life Orb is particularly helpful, especially if Landorus-T does not have the time to setup a Swords Dance (Switch order of item mentions if you swap them in the set).

* Landorus-T needs a Jolly nature to outrun Calyrex-S and Zacian-C after a Max Airstream boost.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Landorus-T can run Protect over Swords Dance on Life Orb sets to be safer while not Dynamaxed, but this leaves it without a way to boost its Attack, leaving it much more vulnerable to Intimidate (Of course drop this if it's a main set mention). Earth Power can be used on Life Orb sets over Earthquake on teams with Rillaboom as to not have Landorus-T's Ground move weakened by Grassy Terrain or to circumvent Attack drops from opposing Intimidates, but this means its Max Quake is going to come off its much weaker Special Attack. In this case, Swords Dance can be replaced with Protect as well. (Add something about AV? It's almost 20% usage on Pikalytics. I think it's not great in this Meta but I guess it is probably as good as Earth Power, which is to say not very)
