PU lanturn

[OVERVIEW]

Lanturn has unique utility as a bulky Water-type thanks to a splendid defensive typing and a great ability. This allows it to check a myriad of Pokemon such as Heliolisk, Rotom, and Talonflame. It can also act as a pivot due to Volt Switch, which allows it to serve as a damage sponge to bring stronger yet more delicate wallbreakers in such as Braviary, Archeops, and Toxicroak that benefit from specially defensive or Grass-type Pokemon being brought in. However, it struggles switching in against Ground-types, which other bulky Water-types like Vaporeon and Jellicent are normally able to handle; Lanturn also has to rely on passive recovery due to its lack of a reliable recovery move, which makes it unreliable as a wall for longer games.

[SET]
name: Bulky Pivot
move 1: Scald
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Toxic / Heal Bell
move 4: Protect / Heal Bell
item: Leftovers
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Calm
evs: 36 HP / 196 Def / 16 SpA / 220 SpD / 40 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Protect is used to stall out Toxic turns and safely gain passive recovery from Leftovers. Heal Bell can be used over either Toxic or Protect to make Lanturn a cleric to assist its teammates; however, Lanturn's lack of recovery moves makes Vaporeon an overall better option for this role. The HP EVs are used to gain an extra HP from Leftovers, and the Special Defense EVs are used to never get 4HKOed by Heliolisk's Hyper Voice after stalling with Protect for Leftovers recovery. The Speed EVs let Lanturn outspeed maximum Speed, neutral-natured base 40 Pokemon such as Rhydon, and the Special Attack EVs are for Lanturn to OHKO Rhydon with Scald. Defensively, Lanturn needs support from Pokemon that can take on Grass- and Ground-type threats like Virizion and Sandaconda. This makes Pokemon such as Talonflame, Whimsicott, and Weezing solid partners. Lanturn can also support wallbreakers such as Gourgeist-S and Lycanroc that can offensively pressure its main checks, while it supports them defensively and safely brings them in via Volt Switch.

move 4: Discharge / Dazzling Gleam / Psybeam
item: Assault Vest

evs: 252 SpA / 56 SpD / 200 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Assault Vest allows Lanturn to switch into special attacking threats such as Heliolisk and Magmortar without sacrificing power. Hydro Pump is an option over Scald, allowing it useful rolls such as a guaranteed OHKO on defensive Talonflame and a guaranteed 2HKO on specially defensive Claydol with an accuracy and utility tradeoff. Discharge can cripple common Pokemon like Virizion, while Dazzling Gleam 2HKOes Guzzlord without an Assault Vest and Bulk Up Scrafty. Psybeam is a niche option that allows Lanturn to OHKO Toxicroak, which is a threat that can freely switch into Scald. The Speed EVs are used for maximum Speed, neutral-natured base 60 Pokemon and lower such as Abomasnow and Clawitzer as well as slower threats like Aggron. Pokemon such as Talonflame and Tsareena appreciate Lanturn being able to wall their checks like Vaporeon and Charizard, and it is also defensively supported by Pokemon such as Palossand and Aromatisse that switch in on physical threats like Aggron and Talonflame that take advantage of it. Moreover, Aromatisse can further support Lanturn with Wish.

Lanturn has unique utility as a bulky Water-type, being able to check both Electric and Flying-types through its unique resistances and high HP stat, as well as Fire- and Water-types. This allows it to check a myriad of pokemon, such as Heliolisk, Rotom, and Talonflame. It also has the move Volt Switch, (i'd reword this to say it can act as a pivot thanks to volt switch) which allows it to serve as a damage sponge to bring stronger yet more delicate breakers in, such as Braviary, Archeops, and Toxicroak, that benefit from specially defensive or Grass-type Pokemon being brought in. However, it struggles switching in against Ground-types, which bulky Water types are normally able to handle, and relies on passive recovery instead of recovery moves, which makes it unreliable as a wall for longer games.

Scald is used to pressure Rock- and Ground-types, while also threatening a crippling burn. Volt Switch, on the other hand, uses the fear of scald to switch Lanturn out of unfavorable matchups such as Roserade, Guzzlord, and Whimsicott into breakers such as Braviary and Ribombee that can take advantage of them (self explanatory) Toxic is used to spread status and slowly whittle down the opposing Pokemon, and Protect is used to stall out Toxic turns and gain passive recovery safely from Leftovers. Heal Bell can be used over either status or passive recovery to make Lanturn a cleric to assist its teammates; however, its lack of passive (well, it does have passive recovery, just not actual recovery) recovery makes Vaporeon an overall better option for this role. The HP EVs are used to gain an extra HP from Leftovers, and the Special Defense EVs are used to live 4 Heliolisk Hyper Voices (to never get 4HKOed by Heliolisk's Hyper Voice) after stalling with Protect for Leftovers recovery. The Speed EVs outspeeds max speed unnatured base 40 Pokemon such as Rhydon, and the Special Attack EVs are for Lanturn to OHKO Rhydon with Scald. Defensively, Lanturn needs support from pokemon that can take Grass and Ground type attacks, such as Talonflame, Charizard, and Weezing.

[SET COMMENTS]
Assault Vest allows Lanturn to switch into special attacking threats such as Heliolisk and Magmortar, while also carrying the strength to do damage back with its solid coverage. Hydro Pump is an option over Scald, allowing it useful power and rolls such as a guaranteed OHKO on defensive Talonflame and a guaranteed 2HKO on specially defensive Claydol; however, this isn't run as often due to its lower accuracy and lack of utility that Scald's burns give. Volt Switch is a must for Lanturn, allowing it to bring powerful breakers in on unfavorable matchups. Ice Beam is used to hit the Grass and Dragon types it struggles with, allowing it to pressure them when switching in. For the 4th move, Discharge is standard due to being a reliable Electric move that doesn't switch Lanturn out. However, Dazzling Gleam 2HKO's Guzzlord without an Assault Vest and Bulk Up Scrafty, and Psybeam OHKOs Toxicroak, all Pokemon that Lanturn struggles to deal with. The speed EVs are used for max speed unnatured base 60 Pokemon - this only includes Abomasnow, but also allows Lanturn to outspeed threats such as Scrafty, Aggron, and Clawitzer which have a similar speed tier.

It also supports Pokemon such as Virizion and Swords Dance Talonflame that can offensively pressure Lanturn's main checks, while supporting them defensively. mention removal; this set is quite easy to weaken down since it has no passive recovery and hazards make it even easier to overwhelm
