[Overview]
Lanturn's unique defensive typing lets it check most of the tier's prominent Electric-, Fire-, and Water-types, such as Charizard, Togedemaru, and Jellicent. Using Volt Switch to gain momentum and bring in wallbreakers is Lanturn's main appeal; however, its reliance on passive recovery means it risks easily being worn down. Other bulky Water-types in the tier such as Wishiwashi, Jellicent, and Quagsire don't suffer nearly as much from entry hazards or physical attacks, and Jellicent and Quagsire also don't need to rely on passive recovery. Even so, Lanturn sets itself apart from other bulky Water-types thanks to its rare combination of defensive utility—including an Electric immunity from Volt Absorb—and pivoting.
[SET]
name: Bulky Pivot
move 1: Scald
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Protect / Heal Bell
item: Leftovers
ability: Volt Absorb
nature: Calm
evs: 88 HP / 172 Def / 248 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
[Set Description]
Volt Switch brings in frailer wallbreakers like Sneasel, Scyther, and Archeops on Pokemon like Eldegoss and Audino, while Scald and Toxic spread status and help weaken the opposing team. Protect lets Lanturn slowly gain HP back with Leftovers and scout out potential Choice item users such as Aggron, Galarian Articuno, and Whimsicott. Heal Bell can be utilized over Protect for teammates that need to stay status free, like Silvally-Fairy, -Ghost, and Scyther. However, this leaves Lanturn vulnerable to aforementioned Choice item users. Lanturn benefits heavily from teammates that can keep entry hazards off the field, especially with its frequent pivoting, such as Eldegoss and Charizard. Because Lanturn is unable to beat Grass- and Ground-types such as Sandaconda, Sandslash, and Whimsicott one-on-one, it appreciates teammates like Weezing, Gourgeist-XL, and Centiskorch to help pressure them.
