move 2: Whirlpool
move 3: Freeze-Dry
move 4: Rest
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Calm
evs: 248 HP / 220 SpD / 40 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Lapras is a niche trapper thanks to the combination of Perish Song and Whirlpool, able to remove common foes like Alcremie, Articuno lacking U-turn, and Clefairy lacking Teleport. Freeze-Dry is the prefered STAB move for its great neutral coverage on the tier and ability to hit Whirlpool-immune foes such as Arctovish and Poliwrath, as well as Taunt users like Qwilfish and Golbat. Rest is Lapras only form of recovery and lets Lapras stall out Perish Song turns. Water Absorb is the prefered ability, letting it wall Water-types like Arctovish and Cramorant. A specially defensive spread is prefered to allow Lapras to better trap and wall the likes of Stunfisk, Alcremie, and Skuntank. 40 EVs in Speed let Lapras outspeed uninvested Alcremie as well as Tangela.

Aromatherapy Alcremie pairs extremely well with Lapras thanks to its ability to cure Lapras sleep and handle Fighting-types such as Sawk and Gurdurr for it. In return, Lapras can remove special walls and weaken physical attackers so Alcremie can more reliably sweep later. Likewise, other late game cleaner like Offensive Trick Room Cofagrigus enjoy its support. Pokemon such as Silvally-Dark, Rotom, and Skuntank can pressure Ghost-types like Cofagrigus and Rotom. Grass-types like Tangela, Lurantis, and Gourgeist formes make for great partners able to handle physical attackers such as Thwackey, Rhydon, and Kangaskhan that threaten out Lapras, while in return Lapras can handle special attackers such as Choice Specs Basculin and Skuntank that threaten them out.

Other Options
=============

Lapras can attempt to run a RestTalk set with Hydro Pump to transform Lapras into a threatening attacker thanks to its STAB having a great neutral coverage on the tier, while still retaining its great bulk. However, this set is completely walled by common special walls like Clefairy and is unable to force out defensive sweepers like Alcremie and Galarian Rapidash.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Pivoting moves**: Pivots like Wishiwashi, Alolan Persian, and Articuno can escape from its Whirlpool and thus avoid being taken down by Perish Song via their pivoting moves. They can also cripple Lapras with Knock Off or status, hindering its ability to trap something further in the game. However, Lapras can chip them down with Freeze-Dry and Whirlpool, making them less reliable at answering Lapras teammates later in the game.

**Ghost-types**: Rotom can't be trapped by Lapras, even though they get weakened by Freeze Dry and Whirlpool. Defensive Ghost-types like Cofagrigus, Shedinja, and Spiritomb can reliably switch into Lapras, taking little from it while not fearing getting taken out by Perish Song.

**Strong Attackers**: Lapras is easily forced out by strong attackers such as Sawk, Thwackey, and Rotom due to its common weaknesses to Fighting, Grass, and Electric, which is further emphasized by its passivity due to its reliance on Perish Song and Rest.

I'm dropping out Lapras. Since I started writing this, the meta shifted a lot and Lapras' niche as well.
