VGC 21 Lapras (QC 2/2) (GP 1/1)

[OVERVIEW]

Lapras has anchored itself as a premier Dynamax candidate for many defensive teams in the series 8 metagame due to its Gigantamax form setting Aurora Veil through G-Max Resonance. Additionally, its offensive sets are strong enough to deal significant damage to several meta staples, like Groudon, Incineroar, and Landorus-T. Bulkier Perish Song sets offer an alternative wincon if Lapras and its teammates are able to weather the three turns necessary. Lapras is reliant on Dynamax and often finds itself being insignificant on the field after it ends. Due to Lapras’s relatively low base Special Attack, it sometimes struggles to pick up KOs, especially due to damage reduction through moves like Snarl and Light Screen. Lapras also dislikes taking hits before Aurora Veil goes up, as its bulk is significantly worse without it.

[SET]
name: Offensive Gigantamax
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Blizzard / Freeze-Dry
move 3: Thunder
move 4: Protect
item: Life Orb / Weakness Policy
ability: Water Absorb / Shell Armor
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP/ 4 Def / 252 SpA
in-battle alt: Gmax

[SET COMMENTS]

* Hydro Pump is the preferred Water-type STAB move as it helps make up for Lapras's low Special Attack, and its higher 140 Base Power Max Geyser is excellent for hitting Ho-Oh and Incineroar.

* Blizzard is preferred on this set so that Lapras gets access to the strongest possible G-Max Resonance, notably making a difference against the likes of Groudon and Rillaboom.

* Thunder is used to give Lapras Max Lightning, hitting opposing Water-types like Kyogre and denying sleep from moves like Yawn and Spore that would otherwise disrupt it.

* Life Orb offers an immediate power boost at the cost of Lapras's bulk, whereas Weakness Policy can be used for a larger boost without the drawbacks of recoil, but its damage output will suffer without any boosts.

*Water Absorb lets Lapras function as a Water Spout switch-in, whereas Shell Armor removes the chance of Lapras being struck by a Critical Hit. Notably this significantly reduces the damage from Urshifu-S's Wicked Blow.

[SET]
name: Defensive Light Clay
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Freeze-Dry / Blizzard
move 3: Perish Song
move 4: Protect
item: Light Clay
ability: Water Absorb / Shell Armor
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP/ 4 Def / 252 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]

* Hydro Pump is preferred as Lapras wants the power from a 140 Base Power Max Geyser to hit Water-weak Pokemon like Incineroar.

* Freeze-Dry gives Lapras the consistent damage needed both in and out of Dynamax. Because this set is not focused on damage the secondary effect Freeze Dry offers is preferred. Additionally, it somewhat makes up for the lack of Thunder by hitting Water-types.

* Perish Song is an incredible endgame win condition due to the immense bulk of defensive Lapras teams under Aurora Veil.

* Partners like Zacian-C appreciate the extra turns of Aurora Veil provided by Light Clay. Additionally the extra turns helps Lapras's team pull off Perish Song.

Ice Shard can be used to activate an ally's Weakness Policy or pick off a weakened Pokemon after Lapras’s Dynamax has ended, but most of Lapras’s utility is derived from its Dynamax turns, and as such Ice Shard rarely finds itself being useful. Sheer Cold has a higher Base Power during Dynamax than Freeze-Dry, and is occasionally able to steal games, due to Lapras’s bulk letting it use it multiple times in succession; however, it is not recommended due to its crippling 30% accuracy.

[OVERVIEW]

Gigantamax Lapras has anchored itself as a premier (I am so tired of this adjective, please use a different one) Dynamax candidate for many defensive teams in the series 8 metagame due to its Gigantamax form. Ssetting Aurora vVeil through G-Max Resonance, it keeps up the pressure not wasting any turns being passive while increasing its team’s overall bulk (fluff). Additionally, it can become a potent sweeper after a boost from Weakness Policy or deal consistently strong damage through Life Orb (No need to really highlight both items here, just mention 'offensive sets can do ...') . wWhereas bulkier Perish Song sets offer an alternative win condition if Lapras and its teammates are able to weather the 3 turns necessary to take knockouts. (List some downsides of Lapras in roughly 2-3 sentences)

(I would like to see more examples in this opening paragraph)

[SET]
name: Offensive G-Max
move 1: Protect Hydro Pump
move 2: Hydro Pump Blizzard / Freeze Dry
move 3: Thunder
move 4: Blizzard / Freeze Dry Protect
item: Life Orb / Weakness Policy
ability: Water Absorb / Shell Armor
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP/ 4 Def / 252 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]

(Set comments should be Moves 1 -> 4, then Items, then Ability/Nature/EVs if they're important. Give some context as to why Lapras uses these moves specifically and what they're good against)

  • Due to Lapras’s common weaknesses to Grass, Electric, and Fighting moves, Lapras is frequently able to take advantage of its opponents attempts to knock it out with a boost to its Special Attack.
  • This gives Lapras’s relatively low Special Attack the power it needs to take important knockouts on Water, Ice, and Electric weak targets like Groudon, Incineroar, and Landorus-Therian.
  • Water Absorb lets it wall Non-Thunder variants of Kyogre, as well as switch in on its Water type attacks for a 25% HP recovery (Very, very few Kyogre are non Thunder atm. Water Absorb is so teams have a safe switchin to spout. don't mention the 25% thing, that's just dex info), whereas Shell Armor improves its bulk through the removal of a Ccritical hit chance (I'd probably just reword this to say provides insurance against stray critical hits).
[SET]
name: Defensive Light Clay
move 1: Protect Hydro Pump
move 2: Hydro Pump Freeze Dry / Blizzard
move 3: Perish Song
move 4: Freeze Dry / Blizzard Protect
item: Light Clay
ability: Water Absorb / Shell Armor
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP/ 4 Def / 252 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]

(see my comments above about the set details)
  • This Lapras set opts to trade damage for defensive prowess, the bulk given by Aurora Veil allows Lapras to tank several important hits from the likes of Zacian, Rillaboom, and the Calyrex Steeds.
  • This set is preferred on teams that wish to enable powerful Pokemon that don’t require Dynamax to function effectively such as Zacian, or Necrozma Dusk Mane.
  • Light Clay extends the duration of Lapras’s Aurora Veil, saving G-Max Resonance for a later turn can further increase its effectiveness over the duration of the battle. (This feels a lot like fluff/dex info. Mention some partners (Zacian-C) that appreciate having the extra turns of Aura Veil)
  • Additionally, Perish Song is an incredible endgame win condition if the Lapras team is able to take 2 knockouts early. (Move this above the Light Clay comment and mention that it's very hard to break through defensive lapras teams under screens so perish endgames are easier etc)

Due to Lapras's reliance on Dynamax to be a threat, it is prone to getting hit by Snarl, or other stat dropping moves. (These things aren't related. I'd say Lapras is pretty reliant on its Dynamax and also worn down by damage reduction such as Snarl and Light Screen) Lapras also dislikes taking hits before Aurora Veil goes up, as its bulk is significantly worse without it.

[SET COMMENTS]

* Hydro Pump is the preferred Water STAB in VGC as it helps make up for Lapras's low SpAtk Special Attack, and its higher 140 Base Power in Dynamax lets Lapras hit harder Max Geyser is excellent for hitting Ho-Oh and Incineroar.

* Blizzard is preferred on this set so that Lapras gets access to the strongest possible G-Max Resonance to 140 BP, as the 20 Base Power boost from Max Freeze Dry lets it get higher rolls on important targets, or pickup KO's it wouldn't normally notably making a difference against the likes of Groudon and Rillaboom.

* Thunder is used to give Lapras Max Lightning, hitting opposing Water-types like Kyogre and denying sleep from moves like Yawn or Spore that would otherwise disrupt it scare Lapras.

* Life Orb offers an immediate power boost at the cost of Lapras's bulk, whereas Weakness Policy can be used for a larger over Life Orb for a stronger boost without the drawbacks of Recoil, however its damage output will suffer without any boosts. however its recommended that it be run with a way to self-proc, as this Lapras has a harder time taking Super Effective hits before Aurora Veil goes up. (vetoing self-proc is required, any Ice-type is gonna have no problem getting its WP popped tbh. Not like LapDog teams are running brick break incin)

* Water Absorb lets Lapras function as a Water Spout switch-in, whereas Shell Armor removes the chance of Lapras being struck by a Critical Hit.

[SET COMMENTS]

* Hydro Pump is preferred on this set as Lapras lacks significant damage on neutral hits without it. (See my earlier revisions on Hydro Pump, they apply here. just dont c/p)

* Due to the lack of Electric coverage, this set prefers Freeze Dry to hit Water types that would otherwise wall Lapras. (Wording here feels off to me, I think I'd just like to see this phrased as Freeze Dry provides a consistent Ice-type STAB move both in and out of Dynamax since this lap isn't built to be a dynamax sweeper.

* Additionally, Perish Song is an incredible endgame win condition due to the immense bulk of defensive Lapras teams under Aurora Veil.

* Partners like Zacian-C appreciate the extra turns of Aurora Veil provided by Light Clay. (Just add Light Clay something something bulk to the mention about Perish Song, the two go in hand pretty well)

(I feel like Lapras's low Special Sttack is worth mentioning as a downside, maybe merge it with the damage reduction part so as to not make the overview too long. Example: "Lapras's mediocre base Special Attack can mean that it struggles to pick up knockouts sometimes, especially when dealing with moves like Snarl and Light Screen." You don't necessarily have to though, as it's mentioned briefly in set comments.)
