Leavanny (Analysis) [GP 2/2]

[Overview]
<p>Leavanny's above-average Attack, decent base 92 Speed, and access to a fantastic ability in Chlorophyll make it a dangerous threat under the sun. Its unique typing also gives it two powerful STAB moves in Leaf Blade and X-Scissor, allowing it to hit a lot of threats pretty hard along with its coverage options. Unfortunately, Leavanny's typing will also prove to be its downfall most of the time, giving it weaknesses to common Rock-, Fire-, and Flying-type attacks. Leavanny also becomes nearly useless without sun support, as its average base 92 Speed leaves it outsped by common threats such as the genies and Hydreigon, not to mention the multitude of Choice Scarf users such as Chandelure. Despite these flaws, Leavanny should not be underestimated, as with the right support, it can be hard to stop.</p>

[SET]
name: Sun Attacker
move 1: Leaf Blade
move 2: X-Scissor
move 3: Return / Shadow Claw
move 4: Protect
Item: Focus Sash / Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
Nature: Adamant / Jolly
EVs: 104 HP / 252 Atk / 152 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
<p>Typical, three attack/protect set. Thanks to Chlorophyll, under the sun, Leavanny is almost impossible to outspeed without boosts. Leaf Blade is your strongest STAB attack, hitting more bulky water types such as Jellicent and ground type pokemon extremely hard, and comes with a high critical hit ratio. X-Scissor is your second STAB move, hitting Psychic and Dark types such as Reuniclus, Hydreigon, and Musharna, and opposing grass type pokemon. Return can be used to hit Fire and Flying type pokemon for neutral damage. Shadow Claw hits Chandelure, which can be a huge threat. Protect can be used to help stall out Trick Room, or to protect yourself against a super effective move while your partner faints the threat. </p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
<p>Thanks to Chlorophyll, Leavanny is almost impossible to outspeed under the sun without boosts, making it a fine sun attacker. Leaf Blade is Leavanny's main STAB attack, hitting common threats such as Krookodile and Jellicent very hard if not OHKOing. X-Scissor is Leavanny's secondary STAB move, hitting Psychic- and Dark-types such as Reuniclus and Hydreigon for massive damage. It also makes Leavanny a fine check to Trick Room teams reliant on Psychic-types to set up the field effect. There are two options for the third moveslot. While Return hits the Fire- and Flying-types who resist Leavanny's STAB moves hard, Shadow Claw allows Leavanny to do massive damage to the ubiquitous Chandelure, a major threat to Leavanny in general, while still giving it excellent neutral coverage.</p>

[Other Options]
<p>Swords Dance can be used to allow Leavanny to set up and sweep, but it finds it difficult to set up unharmed. The same goes for Agility as well. Leavanny also has access to Baton Pass, but the fast-paced VGC metagame generally makes this strategy a poor option. Leavanny can also set up Sunny Day itself, but it will more often than not get KOed the turn it sets up, and sun support can be provided more reliably by teammates such as Whimsicott. A mixed set may be run with Leaf Storm in place of Leaf Blade.</p>

[Team Options]
<p>Leavanny works best under the sun, so Whimsicott is your best partner, setting up sunny day faster than any other pokemon and providing support. As Many teams pack Tailwind, which may allow certain pokemon to outspeed Leavanny in the sun, consider running Tailwind on Whimsicott as well, for a double speed boost. Pairing Leavanny with Flash Fire Chandelure makes opposing Chandelure more reluctant to Heat Wave, possibly helping your Leavanny survive a bit longer.</p>

[Checks and Counters]
<p>Though it is almost impossible to outspeed it under the sun, Leavanny's poor defensive stats, only decent Attack stat, and weaknesses to many common attacks make it relatively easy to counter. Tornadus can take all of Leavanny's attacks with ease, and OHKOes with Acrobatics. Chandelure only fears Shadow Claw, and can incinerate Leavanny with a STAB Heat Wave. It can also set up Trick Room to make Leavanny's high Speed a liability. In general, bulky attackers who can take a hit and KO back in return make excellent checks to Leavanny.
</p>

This is my first stab at an analysis. I wrote this a while ago, changed it to match Smogon's format, and I added a few things to it.

You are missing <p></p> tags on some of your paragraphs, and the formatting isn't right for the set. I'll do a more thorough content check later.

added the <p></p>'s, and hopefully the set format is correct now.

Honestly, there isn't really anywhere else to put it in, it just has too many common weaknesses.

Updated into English name.

STAB Leaf Blade has 135 Base Power, whereas super effective Aerial Ace only has 120, making it inferior unless you're fighting Breloom or Heracross.
Or a bug-type.

Or a grass-type.

Or a bug/grass-type.

But yeah, Aerial Ace kinda sucks.

Poison Jab is inferior to X-scissor in every way. Imo the last slot should be Protect/Shadow Claw/Baton pass, because Shadow Claw is really only for Shanderaa, I'd think.

Also, where's Return? It hits Fires and Flyings neutrally.

Got rid of Aerial Ace and Poison Jab, added return. Thanks. :)

Swords dance should not be the number one set, set up rarely works well in VGC, and especially not when you are setting up Sun as well. IMO Swords dance should be moved to Optional Changes, and It should just be a 3 attacks + protect set.

[Overview]
<p>Leavanny can be used as a powerful physical sweeper under the sun. Leavanny makes up for its okay speed thanks to one of its abilities, chlorophyll, and has a great attack stat, which can be further boosted by Swords Dance. Leavanny can stop many threats in the VGC 2011 metagame with its stab moves. Leavanny's above-average Attack, decent base 92 Speed, and access to a fantastic ability in Chlorophyll make it a dangerous threat under the sun. [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
<p>Leavanny's goal is straightforward: Get in and sweep. The EVs let Leavanny hit hard and fast, because it isn't expected to survive very long. 152 speed EVs and chlorophyll is all Leavanny needs to outspeed all pokemon in the game, even when they're scarfed. The only pokemon that outspeed Leavanny when the sun is up are certain other chlorophyll users, which aren't very common. Life Orb provides an extra boost to your attacks, and the recoil damage doesn't matter much, as Leavanny isn't staying in very long either way. Focus Sash helps it stay alive a turn while sun gets set up by your partner, as well as ensuring that Leavanny can get at least one boost in (assuming you aren't double targeted) The EV spread is very straightforward, allowing Leavanny to hit hard and fast. 252 Attack EVs maximize Attack, while 152 Speed EVs allow Leavanny to outspeed every Pokemon under the sun, allowing it to invest the remaining EVs in HP for some additional bulk. The choice between an Adamant and a Jolly nature depend on whether you appreciate a power boost or the ability to outspeed Jolly Lilligant under the sun, respectively. Life Orb and Focus Sash are both viable options for an item. While the former jacks up the power of Leavanny's attacks, the latter allows it to survive an attack at full health while its teammate sets up the sun. However, note that Focus Sash will be useless if both opponents attack Leavanny. It goes without saying that Leavanny needs team support for it to function properly. Whimsicott makes a fantastic partner, as it can set up Sunny Day with priority thanks to Prankster. Chandelure also pairs well with Leavanny, as it can switch into an opposing Chandelure's Heat Wave and gain a boost to its STAB Fire-type moves.</p>

[Other Options]
<p>Swords Dance, paired with Baton Pass, can be used to pass the attack boosts into other pokemon that work well in sun, such as Darmanitan Swords Dance can be used to allow Leavanny to set up and sweep, but it finds it difficult to set up unharmed. The same goes for Agility as well. Leavanny also has access to Baton Pass, but the fast-paced VGC metagame generally makes this strategy a poor option. <p>Leavanny works best under the sun, so Whimsicott is your best partner, setting up sunny day faster than any other pokemon and providing support. Pairing Leavanny with Flash Fire Shandera makes opposing Chandelure more reluctant to Heat Wave, possibly helping your Leavanny survive a bit longer.</p>

[Checks and Counters]
<p>Leavanny's most obvious counter is anything with a Fire move. Since Leavanny really needs sun to operate, fire moves hitting it will be boosted even further. Leavanny is also weak to rock type moves, which are also very common on many pokemon. Luckily, the most popular rock and fire moves are Rock Slide and Heat Wave, which can both be blocked by Wide Guard Though it is almost impossible to outspeed it under the sun, Leavanny's poor defensive stats, only decent Attack stat, and weaknesses to many common attacks make it relatively easy to counter. Tornadus can take all of Leavanny's attacks with ease, and OHKOes with Acrobat. Chandelure only fears Shadow Claw, and can incinerate Leavanny with a STAB Heat Wave. It can also set up Trick Room to make Leavanny's high Speed a liability. In general, bulky attackers who can take a hit and KO back in return make excellent checks to Leavanny.</p>

I presume this was your first attempt at analysis writing? It wasn't bad for a first try, but you can improve quite a bit. In particular, your prose and general lack of content are the major reasons why I re-wrote the whole thing. I will list out the issues one by one starting from the Overview:

  • Avoid unnecessary repetition. The Overview is basically "Leavanny this", "Leavanny that" etc, and this makes it extremely bland and unimpressive to read. "It" serves as an excellent replacement for the subject in most cases.
  • Try to give a conclusion. The last sentence of the Overview should usually be reserved for summarizing. Now the Overview is not supposed to be several paragraphs long, but 3-4 lines are more often then not insufficient. Just explain most of the Pokemon's advantages and disadvantages in a nutshell, and you should be fine.
  • Don't give sets custom names unless they have already been accepted and recognized by the majority of the community. I don't know if this is a typo or something similar, but "Chleavanny" is certainly not acceptable.
  • Try to add some flavor to your writing, making it more readable. In layman terms, try and improve your prose. Continue browsing some on-site analyses (maybe not the RSE / GSC / RBY ones), look at other GP checks to understand how you can improve from a grammatical standpoint, and practice writing stuff in your free time.
  • "you" and "your" refer to the user or the person who is battling, not to the Pokemon. "it" or he / she are valid for referring to Pokemon. Coming to that, keep this in mind for your future analyses - don't alternate between he / she and "it" in the analysis; stick to one.
  • Be careful with your format. We no longer use [Team Options], and it is now [Checks and Counters].
  • Overall, this analysis was unfortunately lacking content-wise. Leavanny is a very interesting Pokemon, and I am sure that you could have written loads more if you had tested it out a bit more thoroughly.
  • Most of your other problems can definitely be solved if you thoroughly read both of these highly useful threads: the C&C Analysis Formatting Guide and the Spelling and Grammar Standards, the latter in particular.

Acrobat in checks and counters should be Acrobatics.

You need to mention that with Tailwind so common you often still won't be outspeeding much under sun, and since you receive no boost other than speed, you are essentially getting a longer lasting Tailwind out of it. You should also mention using Tailwind in combination with sun to recieve two speed doubles so that you are once again faster if the opposing team uses Tailwind. Obviosly Whimsicott also learns Tailwind, so when you are talking about Whimsi is a good opportunity to mention Tailwind.

I'm very iffy on whether or not Agility and Baton Pass are worth mentioning in OO. They would be next to impossible to pull off consistently, and OO isn't the place for junk uncompetitive moves. I do think a mixed set should be mentioned in OO though, with Leaf Storm.

The whole Team Options section still needs to be removed.

Also, something screwy happened with the set comments. What is in the AC in the OP should be directly under [SET COMMENTS] and then the AC section written by C_P should be added to the AC. (So many abbreviations...)

Anyway, while I don't agree with C_P's method of completely re-writing your analysis, it did give the analysis some much needed oomph. Please be sure to compare and contrast both your and his writing, and if you feel you have any questions as to the changes he made, just let me or him know.

Also what Alaka said.

Is there any way to correct the OP so that C_P's changes are fully implemented? It's been about five and a half months since the first GP check and, once the OP is fixed, I'd like to give it a second check so we can finally get this thing uploaded. I'm willing to just run a check over C_P's check, but that might just cause more confusion...

Woo, this is done, Komodo!
I checked this 2 and a half weeks ago, and I had a lot more changes planned, but then I stopped when I realized it wasn't fixed yet. Either I've improved, or started sucking more, because there wasn't much to change here :/
