Lure That Threat [That's All, Folks! (Paused For BSPL)]

Marilli's Lando-T. Smack Down is really solid on offensive Lando and helps with plenty of common checks like Skarmory, Celesteela, and even Zapdos, and combined with Sub to block status and ease prediction a lot of slow bulky stuff really struggles with it.

idk about the lando-t set. it's good and can beat gliscor, but it doesn't necessarily lure it in. toxic is your only hope, you're not switching guillotine gliscor into lando and hoping it lands, but is switching in toxic gliscor and hoping the lando stays in to get toxiced really the best play for the gliscor user?

gliscor are normally paired with something like p2 or skarmory which would be lured in before gliscor. I'm not denying that the lando dunks on the gliscor, but I just don't see heaps of SpD gliscor switching into lando...

SpD gliscor however does normally love switching into mega gengar, and is often the gar check if not running pursuit ttar or something. apart from icy wind / hex, sub+reflect type is the only other way of beating gliscor, so I'm voting for Thick Fat Azumarill

Just thought I'd reply to an interesting point made above. I agree with all the points made above, but I think if you are playing stall or a bulkier balance of the likes gliscor tends to find itself on, you are likely going to end up switching Gliscor in at least a few times vs. Lando (assuming you chose that mon). As said, Gliscor doesn't really beat lando very well unless it's packing something like toxic, sd or ice fang, it's kind of a weird stalemate.

However, I do think it is a reasonably good scout because 90% of lando sets simply can't do anything vs. gliscor so gliscor can just fire off guillotines for free. Most significantly for knock off, which bulky mons and especially chansey and p2 do not appreciate on switch-in and doubles as an immunity to earthquake. Lando unfortunately is so versatile it's really hard to deal with. That's just my opinion though.

In essence, Gliscor beats everything that doesn't beat it. Thanks to Guillotine or Toxic in combination with's large passive recovery there are very few true stalemate situations for it.
For this reason, people really do use Gliscor to check Landorus. HP Ice Landorus wiith significant SpA investment is close to non-existent, SD + SkyStrike/StoneEdge are rare as well. Gliscor genuinely does check the majority of Landorus.
I've also used SubSD+Smack Down myself in BSPL2 (though didn't bring it to the game), for this stall breaking purpose.

Congratulations to marilli for winning with SubSD Smack Down Landorus-T! Your submission will be logged into the archive!

Here's a classic set built to cheese through quite a lot of its usual counters, including rotom H. All you need is minimal chip damage or a swords dance to OHKO it, and you likely don't even need that if you're willing to risk running it adamant.

252 Atk Kartana Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Rotom-H: 138-163 (87.8 - 103.8%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Kartana Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Rotom-H: 152-179 (96.8 - 114%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

Normally Rotom Heat can use overheat to OHKO pretty much any bulu set, while not being ohko'd by a normal stone edge, and also rotom often outspeeds bulu.
Not anymore!
Bulu can now outspeed and kill rotom with either rock move. Yay!

Rotom-H can take on anything that Koko throws at it, making it a great switch-in to the Island Guardian, unless it reveals the criminally underused tech: Nature's Madness. Seriously, putting everything in range of your(or a teammates') attacks is ridiculous.

252 SpA Tapu Koko Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-H in Electric Terrain: 86-102 (54.7 - 64.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

What's Rotom's biggest draw? No common Electric-type can touch it (besides Thundurus-T). Do any of these Pokémon get a move that Rotom-H doesn't resist? Tapu Koko doesn't. Zapdos doesn't... oh hang on. Get up Rocks with your Hippo or Landorus. Bring Zapdos in and click Thunderbolt to chip Rotom into range on the switch. And then:

252+ SpA Zapdos Continental Crush (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Rotom-H: 102-120 (64.9 - 76.4%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Boom. If it's an offensive Rotom then your job is even easier:

252+ SpA Zapdos Continental Crush (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-H: 138-164 (110.4 - 131.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Zapdos Continental Crush (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-H: 138-164 (87.8 - 104.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

It can be tough to find a spare moveslot on Zapdos to do this effectively, but if Rotom is that big of an issue for you then you always have this ridiculously specific tech!

All right, submissions are now closed! There are to be no edits of your own Pokemon, nor are there to be any new submissions A few quick things to note;
  • Voting will close on Sunday, where the next Lure That Threat will also be announced.
  • You can't vote for your own submission
  • You can only change your vote once, so think carefully before doing so
  • You can vote even if you haven't made a submission. It is expected that you vote if you did submit yourself, but not compulsory

Going for Thick Fat Azumarill's Nature's Madness Tapu Koko. Nice blanket chip for usual answers, and the one I'd probably be the most likely to use, outside of maybe Rockium Z Tapu Bulu.

Wadusher's Z-Giga Kartana. Most of the other noms are either too specialised or have to drop something important, but Z-Giga Kart slices, dices and makes julienne fries is an underrated option in general that can lure something almost every match (Zapdos, Volcarona, the Zards, MegaMence...).

Is Kartana really a lure? Two of its most common sets are Z-Night Slash and Z-Giga Impact. If Rotom switches into an SD it's good night on either set, I dont know if Rotom can even be considered a reliable check unless it's confirmed to be Scarf Kart. It's one of those mons that lacks defensive checks and really just gets checked offensively by stuff like Mence and Blaziken. Kinda like Naga and Thund-T.

I'm surprised a "high" usage set even qualified tbh

Main draw of Z giga is it doesn't need a boost to OHKO rotom from full, allowing you to potentially bluff some of its other sets, or win a lead matchup.
252 Atk Kartana Black Hole Eclipse (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Rotom-H: 97-115 (61.7 - 73.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Of course nobody's leaving their rotom in on a +2 kartana, which would be a nightmare for it with or without the right Z crystal. The real lure comes from them switching in on a resisted hit like Smart Strike. I probably should have made it an AoA set instead of SD to hammer home this point further but oh well. Also, exactly how much usage does a set need to not be an effective lure?

ethan06's Zapdos this boi is the kind of fire we need in the game. I would be into this set a little more if rotom heat was a little more common so it would be easier to justify the moveslot on zapdos, but you see toxic on zapdos which has the same sort of coverage issue as this set, so I'm convinced it's usable.

Darkinium's Stone Edge Mega Salamence

See this is the kind of thing that just slips your mind when you're facing a Mence: even if you take it into consideration it's not common enough to take seriously and you'll just fall for it with your Rotom or your bulky Zapdos or your offensive Celesteela every time. Great lure
