SALUTATIONS smogondotcom my name is bruce chompton (small time ladder random + BIG time chum bucket eater) and after being released from the shadow realm i am celebrating by showcasing one of my most favorite gen8ou RAIN teams i’ve been using made by teh chinese midground specialist mspc
mspc peaked numbuh 1 with it first convincing me to try myself
sadly my brain began to deteriorate after laddering for longer than usual (15mins per month) so i was unable to continue.
mspcs friend mekki also laddered with it and she did pretty decent too!
BACKSTORY
After seeing absolute OWNAGE by our noob pal "electric indian" in the iconic German Premier League
ohohohohohoho
After being thoroughly tried and tested mspc somehow reached #1 and even i managed to hit top 10 rofl.
TEAM DESCRIPTION
PELIPPER
The catalyst for all rain teams ever since it was given drizzle. A must add to every rain team as you get instant rain every time it comes in and are equipped with u-turn to pivot out every time. i went with a physical defensive spread because our team dislikes attackers such as garchomp, urshifu, melmetal, buzzwole and pelipper can come in relatively easily to these depending on the movesets and set rain again for you. Pelipper’s most important role is setting rain as much as it can to support its fellow abusers. Defog is added for hazard control and roost to extend its longevity if necessary.
SLOWKING
Slowking is one of the most revolutionary Pokemon in the metagame thanks to its various traits. Its defensive typing, regenerator ability, great special bulk and most importantly its future sight + teleport function make it one of OU’s most reliable defensive pivots and consistently pressure teams. I ran no slack off because i found it unnecessary and that you should always be attempting to pivot out with teleport or hard switch to keep it up momentum. Eject button is to take a hit from dragapult and other special attackers and immediately switch into barraskewda or seismitoad and begin attacking again.
SEISMITOAD
One of the two swift swim abusers of the team. Aside from speed control it provides the team with essential electric immunity and hazard setter however you may find yourself not needing to use it very often. I prefer hydro pump to have a better chance at ohkoing a few pokemon and getting better 2hko chances. however thele cries a lot about missing so weather ball is also an option. I have considered it and perhaps it is possible to use the choice specs items as to not take residual damage from life orb but that is up to the user. Final note Isza suggested timid seismitoad which outspeeds scarf kartana and more practical on this team that’s very weak to it.
VOLCANION
Volcanion has high special attack and comes equipped with the powerful move steam eruption making it very simple and easy to use. Within the rain + choice specs it allows you to click this move repeatedly vs most of the pokemon you will face and most cannot switch into it well. I usually switch this into tapu fini, ferrothorn or via teleport and always click steam eruption dealing a ton of damage every time. Timid nature because the rain already makes this pokemon overkill.
252 SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 168+ SpD Rotom-Wash in Rain: 148-175 (48.6 - 57.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Urshifu-Rapid-Strike in Rain: 306-360 (89.7 - 105.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slowbro in Rain: 242-285 (61.4 - 72.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Urshifu-Rapid-Strike in Rain: 306-360 (89.7 - 105.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slowbro in Rain: 242-285 (61.4 - 72.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
BARRASKEWDA
the fish is the second swift swim abuser of the squad and pretty simple to use. it’s high speed and ability to deal tons of damage within the rain make it very useful. Even against resists such as tapu fini, ferrothorn and slowbro barraskewda can come in and flip turn providing decent damage and forcing momentum. The final move can be either Aqua jet / Psychic fangs / Crunch its preference really though i’ve found aqua jet to be more reliable.
ZAPDOS
electric bird sticks out like a sore thumb but very good still. birds typing is necessary to have a way to check kartana/rillaboom/tapu bulu and static to punish offensive threats. thunder/wball/hurricane are all powerful moves and 100% accuracy thanks to rain making it hard for the opponent to switch into. boots are to provide immunity to rocks. I prefer zapdos over thundurus due to having better natural bulk and still function effectively outside of rain turns.
However even the GREATEST suits of armor have a chink within so ill list a few thingz we struggled vs.
- if you play kartana please please keep your zap healthy for it and it should be easy to manage relatively fine
- facing ttar they tend to switch into pelipper and zapdos everytime so its not crazy to hard switch into ur attackerz
- you face stall you lose sorry
- dragapult can be annoying but you have to pivot well around it and overwhelm the rest of their team
- KEEP ZAPDOS ALIVE VS GRASS MONZ
