[OVERVIEW]

Mareanie has great bulk, decent movepool and typing, and a great ability in Regenerator, which make it a great wall that can switch into attacks from Mienfoo, Timburr, and Vulpix. Mareanie can also inflict status and wear down the opposing team with Scald burns and Sludge Bomb poisons. However, it has many weaknesses and is vulnerable to common Pokemon such as Abra, Mudbray, and Thunderbolt Staryu. Mareanie's Grass neutrality also causes it to fit awkwardly on many teams, as it cannot switch into Grookey's attacks, unlike fellow Poison-types like Foongus and Koffing. Mareanie is also vulnerable to getting trapped by Diglett and Trapinch, which is detrimental when trying to handle foes like Vulpix and Charmander.

Moves
========

Scald threatens common Pokemon like Ponyta and Archen and potentially burns physical attackers like Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard. Sludge Bomb OHKOes Grookey, threatens Spritzee, and is also useful to weaken bulkier Pokemon that try to switch into Mareanie's attacks, like Frillish and Natu. Knock Off removes items from switch-ins like Ferroseed, Frillish, and Staryu. Covet is an option to take Eviolite from Foongus, Mienfoo, and Ferroseed after Mareanie has been hit by Knock Off, although it is less reliable than Knock Off.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread along with a Bold nature and Eviolite lets Mareanie come in on physical attacks from Pawniard, Mienfoo, and Timburr and survive super effective hits from Staryu and Porygon. Regenerator lets Mareanie gain recovery on switches, which makes it less reliant on Recover and allows it to switch into threats repeatedly.

Usage Tips
========

Mareanie should come in against physical attacks from Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard, as it can tank the attack and fish for a burn with Scald. It can also use Knock Off on bulky Pokemon like Frillish, Ferroseed, and Foongus to soften them up for its teammates. Be careful about switching into U-turn from Mienfoo, which allows trappers such as Diglett and Trapinch to trap and OHKO Mareanie, and super effective coverage from foes like Ponyta and Koffing.

Team Options
========

Ferroseed and Pawniard can switch into threatening special attackers like Abra, Porygon, and Staryu and set entry hazards, which help chip down foes in conjunction with Mareanie's ability to inflict status. Mienfoo and Timburr handle troublesome Pokemon like Magnemite and Onix and provide additional Knock Off support. Grookey is able to take care of problematic foes like Thunderbolt Staryu, revenge kill threats like Abra and Galarian Ponyta, and provide Grassy Terrain to weaken trappers like Diglett. Trappers like Diglett and Trapinch can remove Abra, opposing Diglett, and Magnemite. Trapinch is also useful for trapping Grookey and OHKOing it with First Impression.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Gunk Shot is an option to better threaten foes like Foongus and Staryu. Iron Defense allows Mareanie to function as a wincon and set up on physical attackers such as Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard. However, this requires team support, as Mareanie cannot beat strong special attackers like Abra and Porygon. Toxic Spikes is an option on offensive teams to wear down foes, but it is rather lackluster due to the prevalence of Poison-types. A faster EV spread of 36 HP / 12 Atk / 100 Def / 12 SpA / 100 SpD / 236 Spe with a Timid nature allows Mareanie to outspeed key threats like Koffing, but it reduces Mareanie's physical bulk drastically.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Strong Special Attackers**: Powerful special attackers like Abra, Galarian Ponyta, and Magnemite outpace Mareanie and threaten it with their STAB attacks. Other special attackers such as Porygon, Koffing, and Staryu carry coverage for Mareanie.

**Arena Trap Users**: Diglett can OHKO Mareanie with Earthquake after it loses its Eviolite. Trapinch can also trap and OHKO Mareanie with Earthquake, but it is unreliable due to being slower and risking a Scald burn. It should be noted that neither of these trappers can switch into Scald, but they are able to come in on Mareanie thanks to Mienfoo's U-turn.

**Grass-types**: Bulky Grass-types like Foongus and Ferroseed can tank any of Mareanie's attacks, force it out, and use Spore or set up entry hazards; however, both of these Grass-types hate Knock Off. Grookey can pressure Mareanie with Grassy Terrain-boosted attacks but cannot switch in directly due to Sludge Bomb and Scald burns.

  • Mention why Regen is run here

Usage Tips

  • This needs to be buffed up. Specifically I would talk about:
    • When to use regen recovery vs recover
    • Being careful vs setup sweepers since you aren't that powerful
    • When to use Covet (since its the first slash, this should be discussed more prominently than Tspikes or Knock)

  • Mareanie can also check fighting types for Onix, Pawn, Ferro, Pory, etc.
  • In the Trapinch point, take out the reference to Mareanie losing its eviolite - it isnt really a check even with Eviolite, and mentioning it here makes the point confusing

I'd probably mention Iron Defense/Haze here too (idk how common those are these days though)

I'd group these differently - probably into "super effective attacks" and then "trappers" (which can't switch into scald but otherwise KO) and then add "setup sweepers" because thats an issue for Mar

Looks pretty good to me, 1/3

[OVERVIEW]

* Mareanie has great bulk, decent movepool, and a great ability in Regenerator that allows it to serve as a great physical wall.
* Thanks to its typing and its great physical bulk, it can come in on attacks from Mienfoo, Timburr, Vullaby, and Ponyta.
* It can also inflict status and wear down the opponent's teams with Scald and Toxic Spikes.
* However, Mareanie suffers from Ground-, Psychic, and Electric-type attacks from Onix, Galarian Ponyta, Porygon and Magnemite as these can take care of it. Mareanie also has a hard time with Grookey once it loses Evolilite as Wood Hammer OHKOs it. I'd emphasize here that Mareanie's Grass neutrality can make it an awkward fit on teams, as other Poison-types often serve as their team's primary Grookey switchin.
* It is also prone to get trapped by Diglett and Trapinch, as the former can OHKO it after Mareanie loses Evoilite while the latter can tank a Scald and OHKO it with Earthquake.

Change the moveslots to the following:

move 2: Sludge Bomb
move 3: Knock Off / Toxic Spikes
move 4: Recover
Sludge Bomb is really important for checking shit like Grookey; Toxic Spikes is a pretty niche choice, especially when almost every team has a Poison-type. Covet can be mentioned in set comments but it shouldn't be a slash. Also, change the EVs to 116 HP / 12 Atk / 180 Def / 12 SpA / 180 SpD; this gives you an extra Attack point for free.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Scald allows Mareanie to threaten Ponyta and avoid Onix from directly switching in. Scald is also good for fishing for burns against physical attackers like Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard.
* Covet is a move that is used after Mareanie loses its item from Knock Off to take Evoilite from Foongus, Mienfoo, and Pawniard or Berry Juice from Vullaby. It is good to give Mareanie a way to gain back its Evoilite and soften up these to make it easier for Mareanie's teammates to take care of them. Covet is used more due to allowing Mareanie to soften up Pokemon like Mienfoo and Foongus and give Mareanie its bulk back from the Evoilite boost to come in on more physical attacks for the team. Change to a mention but not a slash as described above.
* Knock Off is used to get rid of the opposing Pokemon Eviolite which softens up the Pokemon to allow its teammates to take care of them. It is also good for Pokemon that try to switch into Mareanie like Porygon and Staryu. Knock Off is better over Covet when Mareanie needs to soften up multiple Pokemon such as Pawniard, Mienfoo, Onix, and Foognus in order for a teammate to sweep.
* Sludge Bomb allows Mareanie to OHKO Grookey, while 2HKOing Spritzee. It is also useful to try to fish for a poison chance against Pokemon that try to switch into Mareanie's attacks like Staryu and Porygon.
* Toxic Spikes is an option over Sludge Bomb that helps wear down the opposing team with status to let its teammates have an easier time taking care of them. Slash with knock off

Set Details
========

* 116 HP EVs with 180 Defense EVs, a Bold nature, and Evoilite lets Mareanie come in on physical attacks as much as possible. Some specific things that this lets Mareanie live would be useful to mention here
* 180 Special Defense EVs enable Mareanie to take a Psychic from Staryu and Porygon.
* Regenerator is run to allow Mareanie to get recovery on the switch, which makes it not rely on using Recover.
Mention that leftover EVs are put into Mareanie's attacking stats

Usage Tips
========

* Mareanie should come in against physical attacks from Mienfoo, Timburr, Pawniard, and Ponyta, as it can tank the attack and try to fish for a burn with Scald. It should try to set up Toxic Spikes or use Knock Off on switches from Pokemon like Mienfoo, Ponyta, and Pawniard. Replace the Toxic Spikes mention here with fishing for Sludge Bomb Poisons
* Recover should be used against physical attackers such as Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard. Regenerator should be used against a predicted U-turn from Mienfoo and Vullaby to not allow Mareanie to get trapped if Diglett or Trapinch is on the opposing team. Mention switching out on a predicted U-turn in the section about trappers below and delete the part about Regenerator; the way it is worded doesn't make much sense and isn't necessary.
* Covet should be used on a predicted Knock Off from Vullaby, Mienfoo, and Pawniard, as it enables Mareanie to gain its bulk back and make it easier for its teammates to deal with these. Remove this section for the reasons described above
* Mareanie should be careful around setup sweepers such as Scraggy, Spritzee and Vullaby, as Mareanie's attacks do not do much against these. Scraggy and Spritzee are 2 mons that Mareanie is supposed to check. I'd change this to mention that Mareanies passivity can be taken advantage of by certain setup sweepers such as NP Vullaby but they need to be careful of status, particularly physical attackers crippled by burn
* Be careful about it coming in when trappers such as Diglett and Trapinch are still alive, as these can trap and take care of it. It should also be noted to be careful if there are pivots such as Mienfoo or Vullaby that can get Diglett and Trapinch in, as Mareanie will be trapped and OHKOed by these. See above
* Mareanie should be careful around Staryu and Porygon that carry Psychic, especially if Mareanie has lost Eviolite as it can cause it to be 2HKOed by these. Minor note here but Staryu more commonly runs Thunderbolt than Psychic

Team Options
========

* Mareanie is a great partner for Fighting weak Pokemon like Ferroseed, Onix, Pawniard, and Porygon as it can come in on these attacks from Mienfoo and Timburr. Remove this section, as everything in it is covered in more detail later on
* Ferroseed pairs well with Mareanie, as it can come in on opposing Ground-types such as Onix and threaten it out with its Grass STAB attacks. It Steel-typing also allows it to come in on Abra's and Porygon's attacks which Mareanie loves. Ferroseed can also provide Spikes support to help wear down the opposing team. Mention that both can Knock Off things and spread status.
* Onix and Pawniard are great to pair with Mareanie as they can stack entry hazards to cripple and wear down the opposing team. Onix can also take care of Magnemite while Pawniard can take care of Psychic-types such as Abra and Galarian Ponyta.
* Porygon goes with Mareanie as it can come in on Psychic-type attacks from Galarian Ponyta, Focus Sash Abra, and Staryu and threaten them out with Tri Attack or Thunderbolt.
* Mienfoo and Timburr can take care of troublesome Pokemon for Mareanie like Magnemite and Onix while also providing Knock Off support to soften up the opposing team.
* Grookey and Foongus are able to take care of Staryu and Onix. Foongus can also serve as a check to Grookey most of the time and can threaten it out with Sludge Bomb Mention that Going us stacks weaknesses to stuff like Abra
* Trappers like Diglett and Trapinch also pair well with Mareanie, as they can take care of threatening Pokemon such as Onix and Magnemite. Trapinch is also useful for trapping and OHKOing Grookey.
* Vullaby is another good partner, as it can take care of Grass-types like Foongus and Grookey while providing Knock Off support to soften up the opposing team and taking care of Psychic-types like Galarian Ponyta and Abra. It can also get rid of entry hazards that finish this sentence

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Change all mentions of Covet to Knock Off here

* Mareanie can use a more offensive set with 114 HP / 22 Atk / 180 Def / 12 SpA / 180 SpD with Gunk Shot, Knock Off, Scald, and Recover can be used to allow Mareanie to OHKO Grookey and OHKO Vullaby after using Knock Off. Change this section to Gunk Shot with an Impish nature; the spread is otherwise the same as the standard set.
* Iron Defense can be used to allow Mareanie to combat setup attackers such as Mienfoo, Grookey, and Pawniard, but Covet and Sludge Bomb are most useful to take the opposing Pokemon Eviolite while Sludge Bomb helps take care of Grookey, Spritzee, and great for a poison chance against most Pokemon.
* Haze is an option to make Mareanie get rid of boosts from setup sweepers such as Grookey, Mienfoo, and Porygon, but Sludge Bomb and Covet are more useful.

Add a fast spread of 36 HP / 12 Atk / 100 Def / 12 SpA / 100 SpD / 236 Spe with a Timid nature. This lets Mareanie outspeed a number of key threats, most notably Koffing and slowfoo, but it sorely misses the extra bulk.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Super-effective attacks**: Onix, Mudbray, Galarian Ponyta, Abra, Magnemite can outpace and can OHKO Mareanie. Download Porygon can also 2HKO Mareanie with Psychic. Split this up into a couple of sections. I'd include one for Psychic-types and one for super effective coverage on stuff like Koffing and Staryu. I don't think you need to mention Ground types here as none can really take a Scald but the 3rd QCer may disagree.

**Trappers**: Trapinch can trap and OHKO Mareanie with Earthquake while Diglett can OHKO Mareanie after it loses its Eviolite. Mention that neither of these can switch into Scald.

**Setup Sweepers**: Setup sweepers like Scraggy, Spritzee, Vullaby, and Onix give Mareanie trouble due to tanking Mareanie's attacks and can take care of it with their attacks. 3 of these 4 things are stuff Mareanie beats. Delete this whole section.

Add a section for bulky Grass-Types. Foongus and Ferroseed are both unbothered by any of Mareanie's attacks and can force it out, although neither particularly enjoy Knock Off.

[OVERVIEW]

(At some point you should explicitly mention Mareanie's Poison typing, because it's directly and centrally relevant to its defensive role. I would also mention that its combination of typing and recovery makes it the best poison type against fight spam) Mareanie has great bulk, decent movepool, typing, and a great ability in Regenerator that allows it to serve as a great physical wall that allows it to come in on attacks from Mienfoo, Timburr, Vullaby, and Ponyta. Mareanie can also inflict status and wear down the opponent's teams with Scald and Sludge Bomb. However, it suffers from Ground-, Psychic, and Electric-type attacks from Onix, Galarian Ponyta, Porygon, and Magnemite as these can take care of it. (I think this previous sentence is a bit awkward. The problem is less that Mare has these specific weaknesses and more that it can be exploited by strong special attackers) Mareanie's Grass neutrality causes it to fit awkward on teams as it cannot switch into Grookey's attacks unlike other fellow Poison-types Foongus and Koffing. Mareanie is also prone to get trapped by Diglett and Trapinch, as the former can OHKO it after losing Evoilite while the latter can tank a Scald and OHKO it with Earthquake.

Scald allows Mareanie to threaten Ponyta and avoid Onix from directly switching in and is also good for fishing for burns against physical attackers like Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard. Sludge Bomb is great to OHKOs Grookey, while 2HKOing threatens Spritzee, and is also useful to try to fish for a poison chance against bulkier Pokemon that try to switch into Mareanie's attacks like Staryu and Porygon. Knock Off is used to get rid of the useful for removing opposing Pokemon's items, Eviolite which softening them up the Pokemon to allow its teammates to take care of them, which and is good especially useful for bulky Pokemon that try to switch into Mareanie like Ferroseed, Porygon and Staryu (Ferroseed is probably the most valuable Pokemon for Mare to knock). Toxic Spikes is an option over Knock Off that helps wear down the opposing team with status to let its teammates have an easier time taking care of them (This is redundant). Covet is an option that is used after Mareanie loses its item from Knock Off to take Evoilite from Foongus, Mienfoo, and Pawniard or Berry Juice from Vullaby and gives it a way to gain back its Eviolite, though it is less reliable than Knock Off for removing items. and soften up these to make it easier for Mareanie's teammates to take care of them.

Set Details
========

Using 116 HP EVs with 180 Defense EVs, The given spread along with a Bold nature, and Eviolite lets Mareanie come in on physical attacks from Pawniard, Mienfoo, and Timburr, including avoiding the 2HKO from Choice Scarf Mienfoo's High Jump Kick without Eviolite, and to survive super-effective hits from Mareanie to take a Psychic from Staryu and Porygon (Added a relevant calc as for why 16 Def is the spread now while also accounting for Pory and Star running tbolt). The rest of the EVs are put into its given investment in Attack stat to lets Mareanie do more damage OHKO Life Orb Abra with Knock Off (added the most relevant calc here). Regenerator is run to lets Mareanie get recovery on the switches, which makes it not rely on solely using Recover and allows it to switch into threats repeatedly.

Usage Tips
========

Mareanie should come in against physical attacks from Mienfoo, Timburr, Pawniard, and Ponyta, as it can tank the attack and try to fish for a burn with Scald, or use Sludge Bomb or Knock Off on switches from Pokemon like Mienfoo, Ponyta, and Pawniard to try to fish for a poison chance or soften up the opposing Pokemon. (Add a separate sentence here about using Knock Off when you expect bulky Pokemon that you can't threaten to switch in. I don't think fishing for Sludge Bomb poisons on switches is a big part of Mare strategy) Recover should be used against physical attackers such as Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard. (This is intuitive, no?) Mareanie's passivity can be taken advantage of from setup sweepers such as Nasty Plot Vullaby but needs to be wary of status, especially setup attackers like Tyrunt are affected by burn (This sentence is not really a usage tip; I would rephrase it to say that you shouldn't leave Mareanie in on sweepers that can set up on it). Be careful about staying in against a predicted U-turn from Mienfoo and Vullaby, as these allow trappers such as Diglett and Trapinch to trap and OHKO Mareanie. Mareanie should be careful around Staryu, Koffing, and Porygon that carry Thunderbolt or Psychic, especially if Mareanie has lost Eviolite that causes it to be 2HKOed by these. (This is more at home in checks and counters)

Team Options
========

Ferroseed can come in on opposing Ground-types such as Onix, and threaten it out with its Grass STAB attacks and its Steel-typing allows it to come in on Abra's and Porygon's attacks. Ferroseed can also provide Spikes support to help wear down the opposing team and can use Thunder Wave to slow down Pokemon that will try to switch into Ferroseed like Mienfoo, Koffing, and Timburr. Both Ferroseed and Mareanie use Knock Off to soften up opposing Pokemon. Onix and Pawniard can stack entry hazards to cripple and wear down the opposing team. (None of these things are specifically valuable for Mareanie, and I would argue that it can take less advantage of paralysis or hazards than most other mons) Onix can also take care of Magnemite while Pawniard can take care of Psychic-types such as check special attackers like Abra, Porygon, and Galarian Ponyta. Porygon can come in on Psychic-type attacks from Galarian Ponyta, Focus Sash Abra, and Staryu and threaten them out with Tri Attack or Thunderbolt. (Onix does not check Mag and Porygon does not check these special attackers) Mienfoo and Timburr can take care of troublesome Pokemon like Magnemite and Onix while also providing Knock Off support to soften up the opposing team. Grookey and Foongus are able to take care of Staryu and Onix. (Mention that Grookey can set up on Diglett or limit its ability to trap Mare with Grassy Terrain) Foongus can also serve as a check to Grookey most of the time and can threaten it out with Sludge Bomb; however, using Foongus means doubling the weaknesses to Pokemon like Abra and Galarian Ponyta. (I would not recommend using Foongus alongside Mare, it's just not a viable team structure for the most part) Trappers like Diglett and Trapinch can take care of threatening Pokemon such as Onix, Diglett, and Magnemite. Trapinch is also useful for trapping and OHKOing Grookey with First Impression. Vullaby can take care of Grass-types like Foongus and Grookey while providing Knock Off support to soften up the opposing team and taking care of Psychic-types like Galarian Ponyta and Abra and get rid of entry hazards that can hinder Mareanie recovery from Regenerator.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Mareanie can use an run a spread of 116 HP / 12 Atk / 180 Def / 12 SpA / 180 SpD with a Impish Serious nature with and Gunk Shot Knock Off, Scald, and Recover can be used to allow Mareanie to OHKO Grookey and OHKO Vullaby after using Knock Off better threaten Foongus and Nasty Plot Vullaby. (These are the most relevant uses for Gunk Shot) Iron Defense can be used to allow Mareanie to function as a wincon and set up on physical combat setup attackers such as Mienfoo, Grookey Timburr, and Pawniard, but Knock Off and Sludge Bomb is more useful to get rid of the opposing Pokemon Eviolite while Sludge Bomb helps take care of Grookey, Spritzee, and great for a poison chance against most Pokemon. (Mention that Iron Defense requires team support and can't beat strong special attackers) Haze is an a niche option to make Mareanie get rid of boosts from setup sweepers such as Grookey, Mienfoo, Vullaby and Porygon, but Sludge Bomb and Knock Off are more useful. (Mareanie never drops Sludge Bomb to run these moves) A faster Mareanie with an EV spread of 36 HP / 12 Atk / 100 Def / 12 SpA / 100 SpD / 236 Spe with a Timid nature allows Mareanie to outspeed key threats, most notably Koffing and Mienfoo, but misses the extra bulk to allow it to tank physical attacks.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types like Abra and Galarian Ponyta can outpace and OHKO Mareanie with their STAB attacks. Download Porygon can also 2HKO Mareanie with Psychic. (I would change this to a general "Strong special attackers" category and include Staryu. Porygon is not a psychic type anyway)

**Super-effective attacks**: Pokemon such as Magnemite can outpace and can OHKO Mareanie with Thunderbolt. Other Pokemon such as Staryu and Koffing run Thunderbolt also can 2HKO Mareanie.

**Arena Trap Users**: Trapinch can trap and OHKO Mareanie with Earthquake while Diglett can OHKO Mareanie after it loses its Eviolite, however, neither of these can switch into Scald. (Diglett should be the first example here, since Trapinch is slower and can lose to Scald burns. Mention that Trapinch is unreiable for trapping Mare, and also mention that Mienfoo U-turn brings these trappers in.)

**Bulky Grass-types**: Bulky Grass-types like Foongus and Ferroseed can tank any of Mareanie's attacks and force it out; however, both of these hate Knock Off. (Mention that Ferroseed can set hazards on Mareanie and that Foongus can use Spore to make progress)

Covet is an option to take Eviolite from Foongus, Mienfoo, and Ferroseed after Mareanie's item has been removed, Mareanie has been hit by Knock Off, (I assume?) although it is less reliable than Knock Off.

Usage Tips

Mareanie should come in against physical attacks from Mienfoo, Timburr, and Pawniard, as it can tank the attack and fish for a burn with Scald. It can also use Knock Off on bulky Pokemon like Frillish, Ferroseed, and Foongus to soften them up for its teammates. Be careful about switching into U-turn from Mienfoo, which allows trappers such as Diglett and Trapinch to trap and OHKO Mareanie, and super effective coverage from foes like Ponyta and Koffing.

Team Options

Ferroseed and Pawniard can switch into threatening special attackers like Abra, Porygon, and Staryu and set entry hazards, which help chip down foes in conjunction with Mareanie's ability to inflict status. Trapinch is also useful for trapping and OHKOing Grookey and OHKOing it with First Impression.

===================

**Strong Special Attackers**: Powerful special attackers like Abra, Galarian Ponyta, and Magnemite outpace Mareanie and threaten it with their STAB attacks. Other special attackers such as Porygon, Koffing, and Staryu also carry coverage for Mareanie.
