Marowak [QC 0/3]

Banned deucer.
[OVERVIEW]

  • Marowak carves a niche as a Trick Room wallbreaker thanks to its very high attack stat, low speed and access to a variety of physical attacks such as Brick Break, Knock Off, Stone Edge, etc.
  • Marowak has a decent typing giving it a resistance to Rock-type moves and an immunity to Electric-type moves which helps Water-types like Kingler and Carracosta.
  • With its decent bulk, it can switch into the likes of Primeape, Aggron, and Stoutland.
  • However, its special defense is horrible and it's weak to Grass- and Water-types like Bellossom and Wishiwashi.
  • Marowak is reliant on its item because without it doesn't do any damage so it hates Knock Off, Trick and Switcheroo.
  • It faces competition from other Ground-types like Golem and Mudsdale because they have overall better stats, bulk, and typing. It also faces competition from other Trick Room Wallbreakers such as Ursaring and Crabominable because of their better typings and naturally high power so they don't have to rely on items.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Bonemerang is Marowak's main STAB move because it lets it KO Focus Sash and Sturdy users like Golem and Smeargle while also breaking Substitutes and it's also pretty strong in general. Bonemerang also does Super Effective damage against common pokemon like Aurorus and Pyroar.
  • Knock Off cripples Pokemon that are reliant on Eviolite like Scyther and Gurdurr while also doing super effective damage against Ghost- and Psychic-types like Haunter and Mesprit.
  • Stone Edge deals with Flying-types like Swanna and Articuno which are immune to Bonemerang and also with Ice-types like Rotom Frost.
  • Swords Dance boosts Marowak's attack stat to an insanely high 1136 which allows it to OHKO or 2HKO pretty much anything.

Set Details
========

  • 252 Attack EVs and a Brave nature let Marowak hit as hard as possible.
  • 252 HP EVs help Marowak take physical hits better from pokemon like Aggron and Mudstale.
  • 0 Speed IVs and a Brave nature combined with Marowak's natural low speed means that in Trick Room it's going to go first against most pokemon in the tier.
  • Battle Armor is Marowak's best ability because it prevents critical hits so that means Pokemon like Ursaring, Mudstale, and Golurk are not able to OHKO Marowak with a critical hit.

Usage Tips
========

  • When you know that a Pokemon that can take hits from Marowak will come in, use Knock Off, which will cripple that Pokemon by removing its item.
  • Since Marowak is a Ground-type, it can switch into Electric-type attacks and since Trick Room is up, it means Marowak gets a free hit.
  • Use Bonemerang against Sturdy, Focus Sash and Substitute users.
  • Use Stone Edge against Flying-types which are immune to Bonemerang or against Pokemon that resist Bonemerang or Pokemon that are immune to Bonemerang like Bellossom and Weezing.
  • If you predict that your opponent is going to switch, use Swords Dance.
  • Watch out for Knock Off, Switcheroo or Trick users since Marowak needs its item or it's useless.

Team Options
========

  • Since you would only use Marowak on a Trick Room team, a Trick Room setter is mandatory.
  • Crabominable helps Marowak with its Grass weakness since it's an Ice-type.
  • Ursaring helps Marowak with its Ice weakness thanks to its access to Close Combat and it can switch into Will-o-Wisp since it has Guts. Marowak also helps Ursaring by beating Pokemon that resist Normal-type moves like Regirock and Alolan Sandslash.
  • Alolan Exeggutor helps Marowak with its Water weakness since it has a 4x resistance to Water-type moves and it can also set up Trick Room.
  • It appreciates Hazard Support from Pokemon like Ferroseed can set up Stealth Rock.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Stealth Rock is an option but Marowak is quite frail and it's outclassed by Carbink as a Stealth Rock setter since it's bulkier.
  • Substitute helps Marowak avoid burns and item removal, however, it requires a bit of prediction to be used at its full potential, while Marowak can take at least one physical hit and set up Swords Dance pretty easily.
  • Double-Edge+Rock Head might sound very good since it's a pretty powerful attack which can be used without worrying about Recoil damage, however, it can't really replace anything since it's just a Normal-type attack which won't do super effective damage against anything.
  • Marowak has access to Thunder Punch which can deal with its Water weakness but it's not very good since Stone Edge hits Flying-types harder while Bonemerang deals more damage to Water-types.
  • Marowak also has access to Fire Punch which could be used to deal with its Grass weakness but Bonemerang already does super effective damage against Steel-types and there aren't many pure Grass-types in the tier so Stone Edge is usually better since it does more damage to Grass-types like Alolan Exeggutor and Ludicolo.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Item Removal**: Marowak can't do much without its item so Knock Off users like Carracosta and Kecleon are decent checks but they can get OHKOd by Marowak.

**Weezing**: Weezing can Taunt and Burn Marowak and also Marowak can't OHKO Weezing thanks to its good physical defense and it can stack Toxic Spikes which could mean the death of your Trick Room setter.

**Lack of Trick Room**: Outside of Trick Room, Marowak isn't very useful since it gets outsped by almost every Pokemon in the tier and thanks to Marowak's horrible Special Defense it gets OHKOd by Pokemon like Articuno, Pyroar, Gorebyss, and Lilligant.

**Crabominable**: Crabominable might be the best counter to Marowak in Trick Room since it's slower and can OHKO Marowak with Ice Hammer.

**Bulky Grass-types**: Marowak can't do much to bulky Grass-types like Gourgeist XL and Tangela since it simply doesn't do enough damage to them while Gourgeist XL can burn it and Tangela can just beat it with Giga Drain but they don't like Knock Off.

I know this is still in WIP, but I wanted to let you know before you got too into writing. Replace Substitute with Swords Dance on the main set, but be sure to put Substitute in the 'Moves' section.

[OVERVIEW]

  • Marowak has a decent typing giving it a resistance to Rock-type moves and an immunity to Electric-type moves. Which helps against Pokemon such as? Its typing also isn't that great, with a general lack of resistances outside of that, and multiple weaknesses to more relevant types.
  • Its movepool is pretty good with a variety of physical attacks like? which allows it to function as a Wallbreaker.
  • Its unique access to Bonemerang allows it to KO Sturdy and Focus Sash users like Golem and Smeargle. This point is a bit awkward because it won't come into play much unless you lead Marowak, which is oftentimes if not always a bad play.
  • While holding its signature item, Thick Club, its Attack is doubled making it very hard to switch into. This could likely move together with the movepool point as they both lead into its wallbreaking potency.
  • It's good on Trick Room teams because it's very slow and it's also decently bulky allowing it to switch into the likes of Primeape, Aggron, and Stoutland. I would specify it can only do this once.
  • However, its special defense is horrible and it's weak to Grass- and Water-types such as? which are pretty common.
  • Marowak is reliant on its item because without it doesn't do any damage. And therefore hates Knock Off, Trick, etc.
  • It faces competition from other Ground-types like Golem and Torterra because they have overall better stats, bulk, and typing. It also faces competition on TR as a wallbreaker.
The first point should 100% be its status as a decent TR wallbreaker, as that's its only niche.

[SET]
name: Trick Room Wallbreaker
move 1: Bonemerang I feel EQ should be here over Bonemerang given that its 90% accuracy is probably more likely to screw you over than the few times its multi-hit effect comes in handy, but I'll see QC's take on that.
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: Stone Edge I touch on this more later, but essentially I think Double-Edge should be here instead, but again, I'll wait on the QC team.
move 4: Swords Dance
item: Thick Club
ability: Battle Armor If Double-Edge goes over Stone Edge this should become Rock Head.
nature: Brave
evs:4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def (The Defense EVs should be in HP for efficiency.)

Moves
========

  • Bonemerang is Marowak's main STAB move because it lets it KO Focus Sash and Sturdy users like Golem and Smeargle while also breaking Substitutes and it's also pretty strong in general. Expand past the Sturdy and Sash stuff. What're some more common Pokemon that Bonemerang hits?
  • Knock Off cripples Pokemon that are reliant on Eviolite like Ferroseed and Gurdurr while also doing super effective damage against Ghost- and Psychic-types like Haunter and Mesprit. It's also a good neutral option when you need to predict.
  • Stone Edge deals with Flying-types like Swanna and Articuno which are immune to Bonemerang and also with Ice-types like Aurorus and Rotom Frost. Scrap or replace Aurorus because it's hit by Bonemerang already.
  • Swords Dance boosts Marowak's attack stat to an insanely high 1136 which allows it to OHKO or 2HKO pretty much anything.

Set Details
========

  • 252 Attack EVs and a Brave nature let Marowak hit as hard as possible.
  • 252 Defense EVs help Marowak take physical hits better from pokemon like Aggron and Mudstale.
  • 0 Speed IVs and a Brave nature combined with Marowak's natural low speed means that in Trick Room it's going to go first against most pokemon in the tier.
  • Battle Armor is Marowak's best ability because it prevents critical hits so that means Pokemon like Ursaring, Mudstale, and Golurk are not able to OHKO Marowak with critical hits. There are probably more relevant examples than these mons. They're not that bad, but 3 average or under-average Pokdmon aren't super representative of the meta.
Rewrite this to account for 252 HP instead of 252 Def.

Usage Tips
========

  • When you know that a Pokemon that can take hits from Marowak will come in, use Knock Off, which will cripple that Pokemon by removing its item. I'd mention Knock Off is a pretty good catch-all option.
This can be expanded on a considerable amount. Is it an early-game wallbreaker, a late-game sweeper, or...? Should it watch out for using certain moves? etc.

Team Options
========

  • Since you would only use Marowak on a Trick Room team, Audino is a good partner since it has access to Trick Room. Trick Room setters in general, not just Audino.
  • Crabominable helps Marowak with its Grass weakness since it's an Ice-type. Anything else they help each other with?
  • Ursaring helps Marowak with its Ice weakness thanks to its access to Close Combat and it can switch into Will-o-Wisp since it has Guts. Marowak helps tear apart Normal resists.
  • Alolan Exeggutor helps Marowak with its Water weakness since it has a 4x resistance to Water-type moves and it can also set up Trick Room.
  • It appreciates hazard support.
  • The aforementioned wallbreakers like Marowak wearing down the opposing team so they can sweep, or vice versa, Marowak sweeping thanks to its teammates.
Again, these points can definitely be fleshed out a lot more. Perhaps not adding new points, but at least further development on what you already have.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Stealth Rock is an option but Marowak is quite frail and it's outclassed by Golem as a Stealth Rock setter since it has Sturdy. On TR, Carbink is a 100% better option, and outside of it there are definitely more common SR users than Golem, who is both uncommon and doesn't even use SR all that often.
  • Substitute helps Marowak avoid burns and item removal, however, it requires a bit of prediction to be used at its full potential, while Marowak can take at least one physical hit and set up Swords Dance pretty easily. Takes advantage of switches, lets you beat Weezing. It takes a toll on Marowak's health, though.
  • Double-Edge+Rock Head might sound very good since it's a pretty powerful attack which can be used without worrying about Recoil damage, however, it can't really replace anything since it's just a Normal-type attack which won't do super effective damage against anything. Just because it doesn't hit anything for SE damage doesn't mean it's bad; in fact, it provides excellent neutral coverage and i would argue it should be on the main set over Stone Edge, but I'll see what QC says.
  • Marowak has access to Thunder Punch which can deal with its Water weakness but it's not very good since Stone Edge hits Flying-types harder while Bonemerang deals more damage to Water-types. I dunno if this point is really worth it at all, especially given a neutral Earthquake does the same damage as an SE Thunder Punch.
  • Marowak also has access to Fire Punch which could be used to deal with its Grass weakness but Bonemerang already does super effective damage against Steel-types and there aren't many pure Grass-types in the tier so Stone Edge is usually better since it will do more damage. Lilligant? Lurantis? The comparison between Stone Edge and Fire Punch is also bizarre since they don't hit remotely similar targets.
  • A faster set for use outside of TR teams, usually Substitute + 3 Attacks.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Item Removal**: Marowak can't do much without its item so Knock Off users like Carracosta and Kecleon are decent counters. Counters is the wrong word here. This point is severely lacking in content. What about Trick and Switcheroo users? Do they need to be wary around things Marowak can do back? etc.

**Weezing**: Weezing can Taunt and Burn Marowak and also Marowak can't OHKO Weezing thanks to its good physical defense. Again, rather bland. Mention how Weezing can stack of Toxic Spikes, something that TR hates, and just add more stuff in general.

**Bulky Grass-types**: Marowak can't do much to bulky Grass-types like Gourgeist XL and Tangela since it simply doesn't do enough damage to them while Gourgeist XL can burn it and Tangela can just beat it with Giga Drain. They hate Knock Off, Fire Punch, and Double-Edge.

  • The structuring of this overview isn't very good. The fact that Marowak's defensive typing is being touched on before anything else, especially its role as a wallbreaker on Trick Room teams, is a pretty big red flag. Start by mentioning that it carves a niche as a fairly powerful Trick Room, what allows it to do so, and then go into its downsides. Also, and please forgive me if you didn't, but it kinda feels like certain parts of this were lifted from the previous analysis I locked. If you did this, try not to.

Hey bud. I've looked over this analysis a few times and it just doesn't quite cut it, so I'm going to have to QC REJECT it. I see a lack of metagame knowledge and general writing ability here, and there's just too much to fix for it to really be worth it. I recommend reading this and this for some help on how it should look (although these are finished analyses, so it doesn't have to be as polished). Please do not let this dishearten you however! Just read up a little on how analyses are structured and the content needed for them, get used to the metagame a bit more, and then feel free to reserve another Pokemon and take another shot at it!
