Mega Mawile [QC: 0/3]

self-note - review everything italicized and bolded before QC 1/3
[note for QC - do I include Wrath of Alakazam in credits?]

[OVERVIEW]

* Mega Mawile is a strong option for a physical attacker as it can take down Fairy-weak Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny with ease and has priority in Sucker Punch for extra damage.
* However, its most important asset is Huge Power, which doubles its attack to very high levels combined with its excellent attack stat.
* While its base HP stat is mediocre, its defensive stats more than make up for it and can be changed depending on whether the set intends to defeat more physical attackers or more special attackers.
* In addition, its low Speed puts it at a disadvantage that is only partially remedied by Sucker Punch.
* Steel/Fairy typing gives it only two 2x weaknesses and no other weaknesses, making it hard to hit super effectively.
* While Steel is a weak typing offensively, Fairy performs great, hitting most Pokemon in the metagame for supereffective or neutral damage.
* As Mawile needs to tank a hit to survive, it often needs to decide between tanking hits from physical attackers such as Blaziken or special attackers such as Magnezone.

[SET]
Name: Specially Bulky Intimidate
Move 1: Play Rough
Move 2: Sucker Punch
Move 3: Metal Burst / Iron Head [if Iron Head is second, set 0 IVs in speed - make a note]
Move 4: Swords Dance
Item: Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
Nature: Careful
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Play Rough is mandatory for Mega Mawile as it is its most powerful STAB move and takes down Fairy-weak Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny and Mega Gyarados.
* Sucker Punch is used to deal final damage if necessary against things it would otherwise only knock down to 90-99% health (e.g. Sturdy users) and partially fixes Mega Mawile's speed problem.
* In addition,
* Metal Burst is also an option for this slot against things that would deal high damage to it and complements Mega Mawile's low speed so that it can take care of things that normally hit it hard but fail to OHKO it such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T and Dragonite.
* Iron Head is put in the 3rd move slot for another STAB move that takes down Steel-weak Pokemon such as Tapu Lele and Crustle with relative ease.
* In addition, Iron Head's 30% flinch chance can sometimes hax the opponent, and its 100% accuracy can make it a safer option than Play Rough. [note for QC - is this wording fine? I don't think so but w/e. note to self - fix wording here anyway]
* Swords dance is [add]

Set Details
========

* Intimidate is the ability of choice here, as it can help against other physical attackers such as Mega Gyarados. [self-note - not sure what explaining this specifically means, but I should do anyway]
* 252 HP EVs and 252 SpD Special Defence EVs are used to tank hits from special attackers such as Magnezone without Metal Sound.
* A Careful Nature supplements the SpD investment while only reducing the irrelevant SpA stat.
* 0 Spe IVs are used to guarantee Metal Burst's success; however, if Iron Head is used, it may be good to avoid doing this.

Usage Tips
========

* Against Sturdy users with Counter such as Crustle and Sawk, it may be better to hit the opponent with Sucker Punch or another move that is not very effective before using Iron Head for Crustle or Play Rough for Sawk to avoid being OHKOed by Counter.
* Despite this Pokemon's great attacking power, physical walls such as Mega Venusaur can still beat it without much issue.
* Mega Mawile still takes out plenty of the physical metagame, though.
* In addition, even with this set's SpD investment, this Pokemon still needs to be aware of special-attacking Pokemon like Magnezone and Naganadel.

Team Options
========

Describe some teammates that would be a good idea to pair with this Pokemon.

* Mega Mawile appreciates support from Pokemon that can hit its weaknesses - Fire and Ground. As a result, Water types make good partners.
* Pokemon that would normally kill it also work as physical pairs since they usually have a different set of weaknesses - for example, the Mega Charizards, Zygarde-C, Landorus-T, and Garchomp.
* Mega Mawile also pairs well with special attackers that have better coverage than it such as Greninja and Naganadel.

Moves
========

* Play Rough is mandatory for Mega Mawile as it is its most powerful STAB move and takes down Fairy-weak Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny and Mega Gyarados.
* Sucker Punch is used to deal final damage if necessary against things it would otherwise only knock down to low health such as [what?] and partially fixes Mega Mawile's speed problem. [again, more examples]
* Swords Dance is the primary move here in order to set up a 2x boost to kill most of the metagame or setup against sweepers.
* Iron Head is also usable here as another STAB move.

Set Details
========

* Hyper Cutter is used to prevent Mawile's attack from being lowered by Intimidate, Charm, and other Attack-lowering moves/abilities.
* However, Intimidate is often better since it helps against key physical attackers such as Dragonite and Mega Gyarados by forcing them to set up or attack with less power.
* 252 Attack EVs and an Adamant nature boost Mega Mawile's attack to as high as it can be while only lowering Mega Mawile's useless SpA stat.
* The rest of the IVs are placed in HP to improve Mega Mawile's bulk except for 16 SpD as a special check.

* Do not Mega Evolve Mawile if you are anticipating Attack-lowering moves such as with Umbreon and Mega Venusaur.

Team Options
========

Describe some teammates that would be a good idea to pair with this Pokemon.

* As Mega Mawile is a strong physical Pokemon, it pairs well with special attackers with different weaknesses such as Porygon-Z and Tapu Lele.
* Mega Mawile also appreciates weakness coverage from Pokemon such as Mega Gyarados, Mega Charizard X, and Haxorus.
*
[so I think I'm not specific enough and not broad enough with this part - gonna rework]

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Fire Fang can be used as a counter to Steel-types such as Magearna, Magnezone and Mega Metagross, as they are common in the meta.
* However, many of these Pokemon that could be beaten by Fire Fang can usually be beaten by other moves. [should I note the moves even if they're already explained in usage tips?]
* Taunt can be used to shut down stalls such as Mega Venusaur and Necrozma and/or force opponents to attack so that Metal Burst and/or Sucker Punch can be used. However, the majority of Pokemon Taunt beats are also taken down by Swords Dance.
* Ice Punch can be used to guarantee wins against the bulkiest Dragon-types such as Dragonite and Mega Garchomp, but typically Play Rough should kill them.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Mega Charizards:** Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y easily outspeed Mega Mawile while dealing out a super effective Tough Claws boosted Flare Blitz or sun-boosted Blast Burn, respectively.

**Magearna:** Magearna and Mawile resist each others' STABs, so Mega Mawile must be carrying Swords Dance to take Magearna down as Magearna typically carries Calm Mind and/or Iron Defense.

**Ground Types:** Mega Mawile suffers against Ground-type Pokemon such Zygarde-C and Donphan, most of which can hit it back with a super-effective ground type STAB move.

**Steel Types:** Most Steel types resist both of Mega Mawile's STAB moves and OHKO or 2HKO it in return unless Mega Mawile is carrying Fire Fang.

[OVERVIEW]

* Mega Mawile is a strong option for a physical attacker as it can take down Fairy-weak Pokemon such as Mega Gyarados and Mega Lopunny with ease and has priority in Sucker Punch for extra damage.
* However, its most important asset is Huge Power, which doubles its attack to very high levels combined with its base 105 attack stat.
* While 50/125/95 its bulk HP leaves it vulnerable in terms of HP, the other two stats more than make up for it and can be changed depending on whether the set intends to defeat more physical attackers or more special attackers. However, Mega Mawile should still watch for strong special attacks (Shift that point somewhere else. Also mention its physical bulk getting supplemented by Intimidate).
* Steel/Fairy typing gives it only two 2x weaknesses and no other weaknesses, making it hard to hit super effectively. (Actually, this is not factually right, with Fire-type and Ground-type Pokemon like Mega Charizard, Zygarde-C, Donphan, and Landorus-T used everywhere)
* As such, this typing is also relatively weak offensively, thus making it struggle against various top Pokemon in the metagame such as both Mega Charizards.
* In addition, its base 50 Speed puts it at a disadvantage that is only partially remedied by Sucker Punch.
* However, its biggest problem is that it faces stiff competition from Magearna, which sports the same typing and better bulk.
* Thus, Mega Mawile differs itself by being a high-power physical attacker rather than Magearna, as Magearna is a special attacker.
* Mention about how Mega Mawile is not able to tank strong special special attacks from Pokemon like Magnezone and Aegislash, and also something about not being able to break through physical walls like Mega Slowbro, Mega Aggron, and Pyukumuku.

[SET]
Name: Specially Bulky Intimidate
Move 1: Play Rough
Move 2: Sucker Punch
Move 3: Iron Head / Metal Burst (If you are able to tank some hits from Pokemon, you could as well have Metal Burst as a stable option, and not as a variable option. Remove Iron Head from slashes, since it does not hit anything better than Play Rough / Sucker Punch doesn't)
Move 4: Taunt / Substitute (It is so slow that Substitute is usually not very useful. Instead mention Fire Fang as an option, and remove its mentions from Other Options)

* Metal Burst is also an option for this slot against things that would deal high damage to it and (this is relative, since Metal Burst depends on what the opponent uses on that turn) complements Mega Mawile's low speed so that it can take care of things that normally hit it hard but not super-effectively such as Landorus-TGreninja.
* Taunt is the primary move for the final slot to power through ("check" would be a better fit here, since Taunt does not "power through", it rather disables status moves)stalls (like? Provide examples) or to force the opponent to attack so that Mega Mawile can use Metal Burst or Sucker Punch.
* Substitute is also an option to tank Z-moves and prevent status, though unfortunately Mega Mawile is often too slow to prepare for a Z-move. In addition, it can be used to set-up a Sucker Punch since Mega Mawile is usually too slow to go first without priority.(Replace this point with Fire Fang to take care of Fire-weak Pokemon like Magnezone, Ferrothorn and Kartana)

Set Details
========

* Mawilite is required in order for Mawile to Mega Evolve.
* Intimidate is the ability of choice here, as it can help against other physical attackers such as Mega Gyarados.
* A 248 HP EVs and 244 SpD Special Defence EVs, along with a Careful nature is used to tank hits from special attackers such as Hydro Cannon from maximum Special Attack Modest Greninja and Gigavolt Havoc Magnezone.
* The rest of the EVs are placed into Attack to maximize power after bulk investment.
* A Careful Nature supplements the SpD investment while only reducing the irrelevant SpA stat.

Usage Tips
========

* Mega Mawile is especially useful against Pokemon that cannot hit it super effectively and do not resist its attacks.
* Despite this Pokemon's great attacking power, physical walls such as Mega Venusaur can still beat it without much issue.
* Mega Mawile still takes out plenty of the physical metagame, though.
* In addition, even with this set's SpD investment, this Pokemon still needs to be aware of the strongest special Pokemon (e.g. Naganadel with Choice Specs).

(Rewrite this section to mention how to play in one or two not-very-obvious, unique matchup. Like say, "Against Genesect and Magnezone,Use Metal Burst turn 1, since you tank its attacks, or Fire Fang, if you have it. Finish it up with Sucker Punch", but don't say {just as an example} "Against Pokemon like Scrafty, use Play Rough", since that is the obvious play. Also mention one or two matchups where you would rather not bring Mega Mawile)

* Play Rough is mandatory for Mega Mawile as it is its most powerful STAB move and takes down Fairy-weak Pokemon such as Mega Lopunny. (Nothing wrong with what's written, but just rewrite this point so as to not make it look like it was lifted from the first analysis)
* Sucker Punch is used to deal final damage if necessary against things it would otherwise only knock down to 90-99% health (e.g. Sturdy users) and partially fixes Mega Mawile's speed problem. [note for QC - can I just reference the other set instead of restating things?] (My answer here is NO, though I am not QC. Also same as first comment)
* Swords Dance is the primary move here in order to set up a 2x boost to kill most of the metagame or setup against sweepers (Like? Give examples).
* Substitute is the primary final move of choice here to prevent Mega Mawile from being OHKOed by a Groundium or Firium Z physical nuke and against Status moves and to set up Sucker Punch. (Mega Mawile is too slow, and Substitute is too situational, that Fire Fang is better in an overall sense than Substitute could be)
* Iron Head is also usable here as another STAB move. (mention some matchups where Iron Head KOs Pokemon that Play Rough doesn't which otherwise defeats you. Note that Tapu Lele is not a good example here, since Tapu Lele doesn't defeat you with either Shattered Psyche, or with Z-Reflect, which is why I mentioned ".....which otherwise defeats you)

Set Details
========

* Mawilite is required for Mawile to Mega Evolve.
* Hyper Cutter is used to prevent Mawile's attack from being lowered by Intimidate, Charm, and other Attack-lowering moves/abilities from Pokemon like Gyarados, Mega Venusaur .
* 252 Attack EVs and an Adamant nature boost Mega Mawile's attack to as high as it can be while only lowering Mega Mawile's useless SpA stat.
* The rest of the IVs EVs are placed in HP to improve Mega Mawile's bulk except for 16 SpD as a special check(Does it provide any check, though?).

Usage Tips
========

* Due to Mega Mawile's high Attack stat, it defeats many Pokemon that lack sufficient physical bulk and do not hit it sufficiently hard in one go. (Like? Provide examples)
* Against other Pokemon, its best move is Swords Dance followed by a STAB move.
* Substitute should be used if the opponent lacks faster priority moves and/or is a stall Pokemon.
* Do not Mega Evolve Mawile if you are anticipating Attack-lowering moves (e.g. withagainst Pokemon like Umbreon and Mega Venusaur).

Team Options
========

Describe some teammates that would be a good idea to pair with this Pokemon.

* As Mega Mawile is a strong physical Pokemon, it pairs well with special attackers with different weaknesses such as Porygon-Z and Tapu Lele.
* Mega Mawile also appreciates its Fire- and Ground-type weakness coverage from Water-type Pokemon such as Mega Gyarados.

(If you could mention what Mega Mawile does in return for these proposed teammates, it would be useful in undersanding the synergy between the two Pokemon. Also, mention one more teammate prototype, because having only two sort of looks like this Mega Mawile doesn't easily find teammates to pair with)

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Fire Fang, Thunder Punch, and/or Ice Punch are 3rd and 4th move-slot options, but they are only useful if the opponent has a 4x weakness to them and fail to do much else besides Fire Fang against Steel types, a very situational case. (Beating Genesect, mirror matchup, Ferrothorn, Kartana, Durant is not situational)
* Giga Impact can be used as a one-time nuke, though it is typically unnecessary since it fails to beat most of the Pokemon Mega Mawile would lose to anyway.
*IDK if this would be worth it, but a maximum Speed Magnet Rise set could be an option to beat GolPhan, though it doesn't have much other utility, and would be frail without any bulk investment

Checks and Counters
===================

**Mega Charizards:** Both Mega Charizards easily outspeed Mega Mawile while dealing out a super effective Tough Claws boosted Flare Blitz (in the case of Mega Charizard X) or sun-boosted Blast Burn (in the case of Mega Charizard Y). (Don't use brackets in analyses)

**Magearna:** Magearna and Mawile resist each others' Fairy-type STABs, so Mega Mawile must be carrying Swords Dance to take Magearna down as Magearna typically carries Calm Mind and Iron Defence to better tank Mega Mawile's moves.

**Ground-type Pokemon:** Mega Mawile suffers against many Ground-type Pokemon (e.g. like Zygarde-C and Donphan), most of which can hit it back with a super-effective ground type STAB move.

**Steel Types:** Most Steel-types resist both of Mega Mawile's STAB moves and OHKO it in return. (Maybe, maybe not. Mega Mawile does have an option in Fire-Fang)

(Add a line about physically defensive Pokemon like Pyukumuku and Mega Aggron, which can tank Mega Mawile's moves and retaliate with their own)

* However, its most important asset is Huge Power, which doubles its attack to very high levels combined with its base 105 excellent attack stat. Listing base stats is basically fluff, and doesn't mean anything if u don't have any context for the metagame
* While its base HP stat is mediocre only 50, its defensive stats more than make up for it and can be changed depending on whether the set intends to defeat more physical attackers or more special attackers.
* Steel/Fairy typing gives it only two 2x weaknesses and no other weaknesses, making it hard to hit super effectively.

Fairy typing is one of the best offensive types in 1v1, able to hit most relevant threats besides steels and the chars neutrally or super effectively
* In addition, its base 50 low Speed puts it at a disadvantage that is only partially remedied by Sucker Punch.
* As Mawile needs to tank a hit to survive, it often needs to decide between tanking hits from physical attackers such as Blaziken and Mega Charizard X or special attackers such as Magnezone. u don't beat reliably beat any of these, as common sets can set up/cripple you before you can knock them out

* Thus, Mega Mawile differs itself by being a high-power physical attacker rather than Magearna, as Magearna is a special attacker.

Magearna and Mawile are functionally complete different mons. Magearna is a special setup semi-stall mon, able to boost both defenses, heal with pain split, and when the time is right launch a one time powerful attack. Mawile is a staple bulky offense Pokemon, able to launch powerful attacks from the getgo with no viable recovery options available. I would not compare Magearna and Mawile as interchangeable/competition, they only share the same type

* Sucker Punch is used to deal final damage if necessary against things it would otherwise only knock down to 90-99% health (e.g. Sturdy users) Mawile doesn't just beat every sturdy user. A lot of them resist her stabs or can use counter, or hit her super effectively, or have priority of their own. List the better sturdy matchups and partially fixes Mega Mawile's speed problem.
* Iron Head is put in the 3rd move slot for another STAB move that takes down Steel-weak Pokemon such as Tapu Lele with relative ease. Pretty sure u beat Tapu Lele anyway, especially with SpDef. Maybe include a different example, and also mention the somewhat useful 30% flinch chance, and also how it has 100% accuracy, making it more reliable when both Play Rough and Iron Head work as kill options
* Metal Burst is also an option for this slot against things that would deal high damage to it and complements Mega Mawile's low speed so that it can take care of things that normally hit it hard but not super-effectively such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T. Lando T that isn't choiced can easily beat metal burst. Also, why not run Sassy with 0 Speed IVs if low speed is important? Mention a reason for not running min speed if their is one in Set Details, if there isn't change the set
* Taunt is the primary move for the final slot to power through stalls or to force the opponent to attack so that Mega Mawile can use Sucker Punch. Which opponents in particular? Also mention that it shuts down slower stall mons, and list which stall mons
* Substitute is also an option to tank Z-moves and prevent status, though unfortunately Mega Mawile is often too slow to prepare for a Z-move. Which mons are slow enough to be able to sub for first and avoid the z move? In addition, it can be used to set-up a Sucker Punch since Mega Mawile is usually too slow to go first without priority.

Is it a clear one note strategy for everything, or do u need to do different things for different archetypes? Are there any specific important matchups of notes that require something completely different? Are there any cases that u shouldn't send Mawile against a physical mon?
* In addition, even with this set's SpD investment, this Pokemon still needs to be aware of the strongest special Pokemon (e.g. such as Naganadel with Choice Specs).

* Giga Impact can be used as a one-time nuke against what? What does giga beat that it couldn't anyway?, though it is typically unnecessary since it fails to beat most of the Pokemon Mega Mawile would lose to anyway. fluff, and if this is true remove Giga Impact

Checks and Counters
===================

**Mega Charizards:** Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y easily outspeed Mega Mawile while dealing out a super effective Tough Claws boosted Flare Blitz or sun-boosted Blast Burn, respectively.

**Magearna:** Magearna and Mawile resist each others' STABs, so Mega Mawile must be carrying Swords Dance to take Magearna down I'm pretty sure SD Mawile can't beat the normal Iron Defense CM Pain Split magearna, but if it does lmk how as Magearna typically carries Calm Mind and/or Iron Defense.

**Ground Types:** Mega Mawile suffers against Ground-type Pokemon such Zygarde-C and Donphan, most of which can hit it back with a super-effective ground type STAB move.

**Steel Types:** Most Steel types resist both of Mega Mawile's STAB moves and OHKO most steels don't ohko, they 2hko or whatever, tho this is nitpicky it in return.

Okay so ik this is your first time doing an analysis, so I will just list what you need to do here in bullet points
  • Assume the reader has very little knowledge of the 1v1 metagame and possibly very little knowledge of Pokemon in general. I wouldn't assume they know anything besides typing and type matchups, as well as what certain moves and items do. Everything else u can't assume. An inexperienced person isn't going to know why Mawile is SpDef, or why it doesn't run Intimidate unless you explain why and show examples of how the set u have is a good set.
  • You need many more examples than the stuff you have already. I would say two minimum. For example, "Mawile beats threats such as x and y, but loses to threats such as a and b." also, In Set details, specifically say what the evs do in relation to the metagame, and never list Pokemon that you can tank hits from that you can't actually beat. Even if you do tank a Z-Zap Cannon from Magnezone, you can't 2HKO it with sucker punch. And even if you hypothetically could, then you lose when they use Metal Sound. If you list them as examples, an inexperienced reader will think they can beat those Pokemon. This relates to Set Details and Usage tips. Explain what specifically u need to do against specific types of matchups
  • in "Team Options" the whole philosophy of what to say is based on "What can these Pokemon do for me, and what can I do for these Pokemon?" Write that section thinking about that.
Just going to emphasize once more, More Examples. and don't write it like (e.g. x, y), just say "such as" or something like that. Ppl need to know specifics as well as generalizations, so they know what falls under the generalizations.

Review everything, edit in what I suggested. Afterwards tag me and I'll check it again for 1/3

(I think I discussed this with TDA earlier this week, but regardless...)

- things are still being implemented, I'm basically completely reworking some parts so that explains that part
- yeah, I'm aware that I hadn't edited anything in the past 72 hours, will check on it today though
- still not dropping it (at least for now), just if that was being asked

poke-specific notes:

- I believe magnezone is losing without m-sound if m-mawile is the 1st set
- I believe m-mawile with SD at +6 2HKOs with iron head / fire fang magearna +6 ID defense-wise, and pain split only really delays it based on observation since m-mawile resists fairy
- The primary reason I ran into difficulties I believe is that on some of my sets Mawile is the third pokemon for a 2-poke core, which makes it get less usage than it would normally.
- Also, Taunt is from the Mimikyu era, so it's much less useful now.
