[OVERVIEW]

Metagross is one of the best Steel-types in the RU tier thanks to its great all-around stats, good offensive coverage, nice resistances, and key utility options. It makes for a reliable Stealth Rock setter that doesn't let up on offensive pressure, making it a great pick for more offensive teams. Its resistances and natural bulk let it serve as a very powerful Choice Band user and its Speed is just high enough to make it an effective Choice Scarf user on certain teams. Metagross's lack of reliable recovery means that its good bulk and resistances can only take it so far when it comes to taking hits. Its average Speed leaves it vulnerable to a myriad of offensive Pokemon, including faster wallbreakers like Obastagoon, Heracross, and Darmanitan, once it has picked up a KO.

[SET COMMENTS]

Metagross's good typing, high Attack stat, and solid natural bulk combine to make it a reliable Stealth Rock setter that doesn't give up offensive pressure. Earthquake reliably 2HKOes the likes of Incineroar, Registeel, and Stakataka. Hammer Arm is a notable alternative to maintain coverage for Steel-types while hitting Zarude much harder, although it becomes very difficult to threaten Fire-types and Galarian Slowbro without Earthquake. Toxic is a fantastic last move that allows it to outlast its counters in Milotic, Porygon2, and Umbreon. Grass Knot is a great lure move for Seismitoad should a teammate benefit from its weakening or outright removal. Bullet Punch can pick off weakened foes in a pinch but doesn't offer much else. The EVs are designed to outspeed Adamant maximum Speed Alolan Marowak, with enough Special Defense to avoid being 2HKOed by Togekiss's Flamethrower after Leftovers recovery. 136 Special Defense EVs can be used should your team be particularly weak to Nasty Plot Togekiss. While Leftovers is generally preferred, certain resistance berries can be beneficial should your team struggle with specific threats. Shuca Berry allows Metagross to much more easily take on Rhyperior and Trick Room Stakataka. Colbur Berry can weaken Knock Off damage from the likes of Obastagoon as well as Darkest Lariat from Zarude, though it should only be considered if using Hammer Arm so that Metagross can effectively punish these attackers.

Metagross isn't able to effectively threaten bulky Water-types beyond Toxic, so it's very helpful to have teammates that can pressure or remove them. Roserade handles these bulky Water-types as well as Raikou and Xurkitree while forming a powerful entry hazard setting duo with Metagross, as it too doesn't give up offensive pressure to set up Spikes. Toxtricity, Zarude, Raikou, and Xurkitree are powerful offensive threats that can force out bulky Water-types while bringing Metagross into better matchups through U-turn or Volt Switch. Togekiss and Sylveon provide Defog or Wish support in order to let Metagross take hits more freely. Galarian Weezing can utilize Defog as well or set up Toxic Spikes, potentially allowing Metagross to use another move over Toxic while also taking Knock Off much more comfortably than Togekiss due to its lack of a Stealth Rock weakness. Late-game cleaners and powerful wallbreakers that appreciate Metagross's ability to reliably spread Toxic are great options as well. Mienshao and Zarude are potent Choice Scarf users that appreciate Metagross's ability to comfortably take on their Fairy- and Poison-type checks like Togekiss and Crobat. Zygarde-10%, Darmanitan, and Chandelure are great wallbreakers that have a much easier time breaking through bulky Water-types and Porygon2 once Metagross has been able to cripple them with Toxic.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Meteor Mash
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Bullet Punch
move 4: Zen Headbutt / Explosion
item: Choice Band
ability: Clear Body
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Metagross's incredible Attack stat and good natural bulk make it a powerful Choice Band user. Earthquake crushes Steel- and Fire-type Pokemon such as Registeel, Cobalion, and Incineroar. Bullet Punch can pick off weakened offensive threats such as Heracross and Zygarde-10% while also having a chance to clean up weakened offensive teams. Zen Headbutt is the preferred last move to 2HKO all bulky Water-types hoping to take one of Metagross's other attacks. Explosion is a fine alternative that allows Metagross to take a huge chunk out of some foe while providing a safe switch in for a frail, offensive teammate once Metagross has no more use. Adamant is the chosen nature for extra power. Jolly can be used specifically for Modest Choice Specs Toxtricity, as well as speed tying Timid Volcanion.

As Metagross is able to consistently break down opposing defensive cores, late-game cleaners are ideal choices to capitalize on this. Zarude and Mienshao are fantastic Choice Scarf users that greatly appreciate being able to use U-turn early on to switch Metagross into their Fairy-type responses. Sharpedo and Nasty Plot Salazzle are good sweeping options that appreciate Metagross reliably pressuring or outright removing bulky Water-types from the game. Roserade provides Spikes support to aid in wearing down the likes of Steelix and Suicune while also checking Xurkitree and Raikou, which can revenge kill a slightly weakened Metagross once it has KOed some foe. Porygon2 is able to switch into various faster special attackers attempting to revenge kill Metagross, such as Chandelure, Toxtricity, and Xurkitree, and is able to safely bring Metagross into battle with Teleport. Other physical attackers such as Zygarde-10%, Obstagoon, and Heracross can team up with Metagross to overwhelm physical walls. Wish support from Sylveon can be helpful, as Metagross's average Speed will often mean it has to take a hit in order to strike back with a KO. Togekiss, Crobat, and Noivern are good Defog users that can help keep Metagross healthy enough to take a hit when necessary; entry hazards will take their toll with how often Metagross will switch into and out of battle. Diancie and Seismitoad are great Stealth Rock users to pair with Metagross, as they have generally strong matchups against common Fire-types looking to revenge kill Metagross. Seismitoad can spread Toxic and use Knock Off to make it easier for Metagross to break through tough defensive Pokemon, like Suicune and Vileplume, and Diancie can weaken or KO Steel-types that resist Metagross's powerful Meteor Mash.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Meteor Mash
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Ice Punch / Rock Slide
move 4: Trick
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Clear Body
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With a Choice Scarf equipped, Metagross is able to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame aside from Crobat, thus allowing it to be much more effective against faster-paced teams. Meteor Mash does a hefty chunk of damage to offensive Pokemon that are neutral to it, allowing it to revenge kill threats like Heracross and non-Choice Scarf Zarude at high HP. Earthquake threatens Electric- and Fire-types such as Raikou, non-Choice Scarf Xurkitree, and non-Choice Scarf Darmanitan with an OHKO. Ice Punch crucially OHKOes Noivern while being an accurate move to hit Zarude and Roserade with. Rock Slide is an alternative to cover Fire- and Flying-types in one moveslot to ease prediction. Trick cripples walls, such as Suicune, Seismitoad, and Steelix, and can also limit the effectiveness of item-reliant Pokemon like Magnezone and Necrozma.

Choice Scarf Metagross should be played as more of a fast wallbreaker rather than a late-game cleaner like other Choice Scarf users, although the boosted Speed can allow it to clean up late-game if the opportunity arises. Roserade is a great teammate to check bulky Water-types and Choice Scarf Xurkitree -- the former of which can prevent Metagross from reliably revenge killing and the latter revenge killing a slightly weakened Metagross -- while also setting up Spikes to wear down the opposing team. Zygarde-10% and Zarude are other options to handle these Pokemon for Metagross, needing prediction to switch into them but helping more with revenge killing. Powerful wallbreakers such as Heracross, Obstagoon, and Toxtricity can wear down or remove most defensive Pokemon and appreciate Metagross's increased Speed to handle naturally faster Pokemon that trouble them, such as Raikou, Zygarde-10%, and Noivern. Metagross is slower than other Choice Scarf users, so teammates that can reliably check them can be very helpful. Togekiss and Galarian Weezing can comfortably check Mienshao while using Defog to remove entry hazards that chip away at Metagross. Milotic and Seismitoad can handle Darmanitan, with Milotic helping Metagross switch in with Flip Turn and Seismitoad being able to set up Stealth Rock and spread Toxic to wear down defensive cores. Naturally fast Pokemon, such as Raikou and Noivern as well as the aforementioned Zarude and Zygarde-10%,, can also provide extra insurance against Pokemon that Metagross generally doesn't appreciate, such as Cobalion. Should Metagross successfully cripple a wall with Trick, setup sweepers like Shell Smash Cloyster and Swords Dance Mimikyu can capitalize and sweep.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Agility can allow Metagross to sweep late-game, but such a set can't really be utilized effectively early- or mid-game to capitalize on its bulk and typing to generate pressure. Protect can scout for potential Choice-locked attackers like Darmanitan as well as stall for Toxic damage. A mixed set with Grass Knot can lure in and demolish Rhyperior and Seismitoad, the latter of which is a common switch-in to Metagross on most teams, but Choice Band Zen Headbutt generally is sufficient for this purpose. Body Press with Iron Defense seems appealing on a bulky Pokemon like Metagross, but it would much rather just use Hammer Arm should it want to punish Dark-types like Obstagoon and Zarude.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water-types**: Outside of Choice Band Zen Headbutt, Seismitoad can handle any attack Metagross uses and retaliate with Knock Off or STAB Earthquake. Milotic and Suicune have ways to stay healthy in order to switch in multiple times. Volcanion 4x resists Steel and can OHKO Metagross with its Fire-type STAB moves, though Earthquake threatens it.

**Faster Pokemon**: Metagross hits incredibly hard, but its base 70 Speed leaves it outpaced by many offensive Pokemon, which not only force it out after it gets a KO but also make it hard for Metagross to get on the field to begin with. Darmanitan, Toxtricity, Chandelure, and Zarude are all faster Pokemon that can threaten with powerful or super effective STAB moves, although none can really switch in safely.

**Ground-types**: As Metagross rarely runs Ice Punch, Ground-types tend to fare well against it. Steelix has to worry about boosted Earthquake some, but its high Defense lets it take a couple when necessary, and it easily handle Meteor Mash. Rhyperior and the rare Mudsdale are shakier answers because they don't deal with Meteor Mash as well, but they have much higher Attack stats with which to threaten Metagross with their STAB Earthquake.

Moving to QC. Decided to keep Scarf as a full set (for now) for the role compression (outspeeding Electrics, still being able to tank 1-2 strong resisted hits per game) tested mixed and didn't like it enough for a full set.

[OVERVIEW]

- Versatile offensive Steel-type
- Great all-around stats highlighted by base 130 Attack
- Good coverage in Earthquake and Thunder Punch (it doesn't run tpunch on any of the sets you provide so i dont think it's worth a mention here)
- Even has priority bypass its average Speed when necessary [i'd remove this or make it a very brief mention, the prio isnt very threatening due to the high # of faster mons that resist it (any electric or fire, for instance)]
- Can use its resistances and good bulk to reliably set Stealth Rock
- Base 70 Speed and good defenses can make it a powerful Choice Band user
- Can struggle to fit all the moves it wants
- No reliable recovery means it can only take so many hits
- Can struggle against teams with faster wallbreakers
- Clear Body niche, but helps against Incineroar, a common stop gap to physical attackers (mention sticky web maybe?)

[SET]
name: Stealth Rock
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Meteor Mash
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Clear Body
nature: Adamant
evs: 248 HP / 176 Atk / 84 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

- Set Stealth Rock with good typing and defenses
- Meteor Mash still hurts stuff
- EQ smacks opposing Steels, Incineroar, Glowbro, etc. (make sure to word the gbro part carefully, your EQ is unlikely to 2hko from full:
176+ Atk Metagross Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Galar: 176-208 (44.6 - 52.7%) -- 22.3% chance to 2HKO)

- Toxic annoys fat mons; P2, Milo, Seis, etc. EQ hits the Steels / Poisons, so easy for Meta to spread Toxic
- Bullet Punch if you want priority. Really niche tho
- imo add a brief mention of Hammer Arm; hits zarude hard + most steels but at the cost of letting in fires free (or dropping tox)
- maybe mention grass knot > tox to surprise opposing seismitoads that come in to sr so u can open things up for teammates

- Enough Speed for neutral base 80s. (give examples. it also exactly creeps max jolly rhyperior, which is why the benchmark was chosen) Rest in bulk and Attack
- Leftovers gives passive recovery
- Resist berries can be clutch. Shuca most notable for Rhyperior and OTR Stakataka
- Colbur reduces Knock damage (+ Zarude's Darkest Lariat); Occa can let Meta smack Noivern
- Can only Toxic bulky Waters; doesn't offensively threaten them at all
- Roserade and Electrics smack bulky Waters. [for 'bulky water punisher' gotta mention zarude too imo] Roserade can set Spikes for a hazard setting duo; Raikou, Xurkitree, and Toxtricity can Volt Switch to get Metagross in on good matchups. Thundurus can sweep with Plot or annoy with Knock spam and have Metagross backing it up against Rock and Ice moves
- Prone to being worn down and / or statused. Togekiss and Sylveon both work well. Both have Heal Bell; Togekiss also has Defog and Sylveon can provide Wish.
- Galarian Weezing can Defog or opt to set TSpikes. Takes Knock Off well and appreciates Megaross checking Psychics effectively
- Easily spreads Toxic to neuter defensive mons, so late-game cleaners can take advantage of this
- Zarude and Mienshao are great Scarfers. Both can U-turn into Metagross against Galarian Weezing and Togekiss
- Darmanitan appreciates bulky Waters poisoned and can break open teams easier with its primary checks put on a timer
- mention other mons that can lure in and chip/KO bulky waters; these support meta, and meta supports them by toxing. chandelure, cb zyg-10% are the first that come to mind for me

- Banded 130 Attack stat go brrr
- Mash slaps stuff. 2HKOes tons of bulky stuff and OHKOes frailer stuff easily
- EQ slams Regi, Lix, and cocky Electrics (sans Thundurus)
- Bullet Punch is priority to pick off boosted threats. Can also clean weakened offensive teams
- Zen Headbutt 2HKOes bulky Water-types with a layer of Spikes and cleanly OHKOes Thundurus.
- Explosion can take out something for a teammate to capitalize on. Also useful if Metagross has already done its job and you just need a safe switch in for a teammate to win
- Max / Max. Hit hard and outspeed as much as possible
- Adamant cranks up the power more. Jolly can outspeed Modest Toxtricity, tie with Volcanion, and stay ahead of rare Timid Specs Sylveon
- Powerful wallbreaker, so cleaners are really nice
- Zarude and Mienshao attract Fairies like a magnet and can U-turn into Meta for easy breaking chances
- mention some more pivoting options! uturn noivern is one that comes to mind right away (or flygon if u wanna be unconventional)
- Roserade checks bulky Waters and sets Spikes to wear them down quicker for Metagross
- Porygon2 checks faster Electrics looking to revenge Metagross and has Teleport for easy entry
- Zygarde-10%, Obastagoon, and Heracross among physical attackers that can team up to overload physical walls with Metagross
- Wish support nice as Metagross will often take a hit to send an even harder hit in return. Sylveon generally works the best
- Hit-and-run attacker, so hazard removal is appreciated. Crobat, Togekiss, and Noivern are all options
- Hone Claws Durant and SD Cobalion can take advantage of Metagross weakening or outright removing bulky Waters with repeated attacks [there's a lot of other sweepers i'd recommend rather than Hone Claws Durant. Sharpedo, Barbaracle, and DD / Scale Shot CB Zygarde-10% are better examples here]
- Diancie and Seismitoad are good Fire-type checks that can set Stealth Rock. Seis notably spreads Toxic well, allowing Metagross to use something else over it. Diancie can remove weaken bulky Steels with Body Press to let Metagross just throw out Meteor Mash more freely

[SET COMMENTS]

- Outpaces the entire unboosted metagame while retaining decent bulk and more power than most Scarfers
- Mash hits offensive Pokemon neutral to it for heavy damage. Heracross takes 62% minimum just as an example and it isn't "frail" per se
- Earthquake hits Raikou, Toxtricity, Darmanitan, and Xurkitree extremely hard
- Ice Punch can OHKO Noivern and 2HKO Thundurus
- Rock Slide can hit Fires and Flyings in one slot. Notably misses the OHKO on Noivern
- Trick ruins walls. Suicune, Seismitoad, and Steelix detest this
- Trick also stops bulky set-up sweepers like CM Reuniclus and Slowbro-Galar
- Outspeed as much as possible, so Jolly is used
- Roserade really good for Spikes to makeup for lower power and to take on bulky Waters that thwart Metagross's revenge killing
- Heracross, Obstagoon, and Pangoro (Pangoro?? i'd def use another example lol, never once seen panda. chandelure or toxtricity would work) are powerful wallbreakers that can deal severe damage to most defensive Pokemon for Metagross to clean up after
- Hazard removal not mandatory, but helpful since this set will switch a lot. Togekiss, Crobat, and Noivern are good here
(idt this point is relevant to this specific set, this advice is a bit too generic)

- Loses to most other Scarf users, so checks to them are nice
- also add here that bc it's a rly slow scarfer you should have other fast offensive pokemon that can help out with your team's speed control, such as raikou and noivern
- Togekiss and G-Weez handle Zarude and Mienshao. Milotic and Seismitoad check Darmanitan. Xurkitree hard to wall, but a combination of Zarude + Seismitoad can force it to predict correctly multiple times to make progress.
- Sweepers that can capitalize on Trick'd walls. NP Thundy, SD Mimikyu, SS Cloyster are good options. Each can weaken or beat bulky Steel- and Water-types to help Metagross clean even when Trick isn't used to help them set up.

overall note about scarf: it's not a set that usually cleans teams. the scarf is helpful to let metagross threaten out things like thundurus / raikou as they setup (or even attack, bc it can take one with its bulk. it can kind of function more as a fast breaker than a cleaner. hope that makes sense, lmk if u have questions.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Waters**: Outside of Choice Band Zen Headbutt, Seismitoad can handle any attack Metagross uses and retaliate with Knock Off or STAB Earthquake. Milotic and Suicune must also be wary of Thunder Punch (you never mentioned thunder punch above, idk if i'd throw it in here), but both have ways to stay healthy in order to switch in multiple times. Volcanion 4x resists Steel and can OHKO Metagross with its Fire-type STAB moves, though Earthquake and Thunder Punch deal a hefty chunk.

**Faster Pokemon**: Metagross can hits incredibly hard, but its base 70 Speed leaves it outpaced by many offensive Pokemon. Darmanitan, Toxtricity, Chandelure, and Zarude are all faster Pokemon that can threaten with super effective STAB moves or powerful Choice-boosted attacks, although none can really switch in safely. Offensive teams with these threats can also limit Metagross' chances to come into battle.

**Ground-types**: As Metagross rarely runs Ice Punch, Ground-types tend to fare well. Steelix has to worry about boosted Earthquakes some, but its high Defense lets it take a couple when necessary while being able to easily handle Meteor Mash. Rhyperior and Mudsdale (hmm, idk if i'd mention muds, it owns metagross but isn't rly used in RU at all) are shakier answers as they don't deal with Meteor Mash as well, but both have much higher Attack stats with which to threaten Metagross with their STAB Earthquakes.

Metagross is one of the best Steel-types in the RU tier thanks to its great all-around stats, good offensive coverage, and key utility options. Its great Attack stat, natural bulk, and good resistance profile allows it to be a reliable Stealth Rock setter that doesn't let up on offensive pressure, making it a prime (id pick a different word) pick for more offensive teams. Those same resistances and natural bulk lets it serve as a very powerful Choice Band user and its Speed is just high enough to be an effective Choice Scarf user on certain teams. Metagross's lack of reliable recovery means that its good bulk and resistances can only take it so far when it comes to taking hits. Its average Speed also leaves it prone ot (typo) a myriad of offensive Pokemon, including faster wallbreakers like Toxtricity (if not scarfed), Heracross, and Darmanitan, once it has picked up a KO. Clear Body is a niche ability, but can aid Metagross against the rare Sticky Web teams as well as against Incineroar, a common pivot into most physical attackers.

[SET COMMENTS]

Metagross's good typing, high Attack stat, and solid natural bulk combine to make it a reliable Stealth Rock setter on many teams that don't want their Stealth Rock setter to give up offensive pressure. Earthquake nails the likes of Incineroar, Registeel, and Galarian Slowbro for 2HKOes, although Galarian Slowbro does need to be slightly weakened if its invested in Defense (most are, id just remove gbro as an example). Toxic is a fantastic last move on this Metagross as no Poison- or Steel-type would dream of switching into it, thus allowing Metagross to reliably land Toxic against desired defensive Pokemon, such as Milotic, Porygon2, and Umbreon. Hammer Arm is a notable alternative to maintain Steel-type coverage while hitting Zarude much harder, although it becomes very difficult to threaten Fire-types or Galarian Slowbro without Earthquake (i would move this sentence above the toxic one). Grass Knot is a great lure move for Seismitoad should a teammate benefit from its weakening or outright removal. Bullet Punch can pick off weakened opponents in a pinch, but doesn't offer much else. The EVs are designed to outspeed Jolly maximum Speed Rhyperior with the rest focusing on Metagross's overall bulk and Attack. While Leftovers is generally preferred, certain resistance berries can be beneficial should your team struggle with specific threats. Shuca Berry allows Metagross to much more easily take on Rhyperior and Trick Room Stakataka for its team. Colbur Berry can weaken Knock Off damage from the likes of Obastagoon as well as Darkest Lariat from Zarude, though it should only be considered if using Hammer Arm so that Metagross can effectively punish these attackers. (is it worth mentioning just max max speed atk?)

Metagross isn't able to effectively threaten bulky Water-types outside of crippling them with Toxic, so its very helpful to have teammates that can pressure or remove them. Roserade handles these bulky Water-types as well as Raikou and Xurkitree while forming a powerful entry hazard setting duo with Metagross, as it too doesn't give up offensive pressure to set up Spikes. Toxtricity, Zarude, Raikou, and Xurkitree are powerful offensive threats that can force out bulky Water-types while bringing Metagross into better matchups through U-turn and Volt Switch respectively. Togekiss and Sylveon are good Fairy-types to use with Metagross as they can provide Defog and Wish support respectively in order to let Metagross take hits more freely. Galarian Weezing can utilize Defog as well or set up Toxic Spikes to potentially allow Metagross to use another move while also taking Knock Off much more comfortably than Togekiss due to its lack of a Stealth Rock weakness. Late-game cleaners and powerful wallbreakers that appreciate Metagross's ability in reliably spreading Toxic are great options as well. Mienshao and Zarude are potent Choice Scarf users that appreciate Metagross's ability to comfortably take on their Fairy- and Poison-type checks like Togekiss and Crobat. Metagross's incredible Attack stat and good natural bulk allows it to make for a powerful Choice Band wallbreaker (choice band user or just wallbreaker imo). Earthquake crushes opposing Steel- and Fire-type Pokemon, such as Registeel, Cobalion, and Incineroar. Bullet Punch can pick off weakened offensive threats, such as Heracross and Zygarde-10% while also having a chance to clean up weakened offensive teams. Zen Headbutt is the preferred last move to 2HKO all bulky Water-types hoping to take one of Metagross's other attacks while also reliably OHKOing Thundurus, which otherwise can take any one attack. Explosion is a fine alternative that allows Metagross to take a huge chunk out of something while providing a safe switch in for a frail, offensive teammate once Metagross has no more use. Adamant is the chosen nature as only Modest Toxtricity and the rare Timid Choice Specs Sylveon are outsped with a Jolly nature.

With a Choice Scarf equipped, Metagross is able to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame (iirc crobat outspeeds), thus allowing it to be much more effective against faster-paced teams. Meteor Mash still does a hefty chunk to offensive Pokemon that lack a resistance to the move, thus allowing it to revenge kill threats like Heracross and non-Choice Scarf Zarude at a much higher HP range than they would normally fear a neutral STAB move (this last part seems like fluff, id just say something along the lines of "revenge kill heracross and zarude at a high HP percentage"). Earthquake threatens Electric- and Fire-types, such as Raikou, Xurkitree, and Darmanitan (non-scarf on the latter two) with a swift OHKO before they can attack Metagross. Ice Punch crucially OHKOes Noivern and 2HKOes Thundurus while giving an accurate move to hit Zarude and Roserade with. Rock Slide is an alternative to cover Fire- and Flying-types in one moveslot to ease prediction. Trick cripples walls, such as Suicune, Seismitoad, and Steelix, and renders them much less effective (last part seems like repeating "cripples"). It can also catch item-reliant Pokemon, like Magnezone, Necrozma, and Chandelure and give them an unwanted Choice item to limit their effectiveness. Roserade is a great teammate to check bulky Waters and Choice Scarf Xurkitree, the former of which can prevent Metagross from reliably revenge killing opponents and the latter can revenge kill a slightly weakened Metagross, while also setting up Spikes to wear down the opposing team. Powerful wallbreakers, such as Heracross, Obstagoon, and Toxtricity can wear down or remove most defensive Pokemon and appreciate Metagross's increased Speed to handle naturally faster Pokemon that trouble them, such as Raikou, Zygarde-10%, and Thundurus. Metagross is slower than other Choice Scarf users, so teammates that can reliably check them can be very helpful. Togekiss and Galarian Weezing can comfortably check Mienshao while using Defog to remove entry hazards that chip away at Metagross. Agility is a powerful boosting move that can allow Metagross to sweep late-game, but such a set can't really be utilized effectively early- and mid-game to capitalize on its bulk and typing to generate offense. A mixed set with Grass Knot can lure in and demolish Rhyperior and Seismitoad, the latter of which is a common switch into Metagross on most teams, but Choice Band Zen Headbutt generally is sufficient for this purpose. Body Press with Iron Defense seems appealing on a bulky Pokemon like Metagross, but it would much rather just use Hammer Arm should it want to punish Dark-types like Obstagoon and Zarude. Assault Vest can enhance Metagross's special bulk to better take on special attackers, like Raikou and Thundurus, but the lack of Toxic or Stealth Rock takes away the utility a bulky set would enjoy having access to. (toxtect deserves a mention imo)

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Waters**: Outside of Choice Band Zen Headbutt, Seismitoad can handle any attack Metagross uses and retaliate with Knock Off or STAB Earthquake. Milotic and Suicune both have ways to stay healthy in order to switch in multiple times. Volcanion 4x resists Steel and can OHKO Metagross with its Fire-type STAB moves, though Earthquake deals a hefty chunk.

**Faster Pokemon**: Metagross hits incredibly hard, but its base 70 Speed leaves it outpaced by many offensive Pokemon, which not only can force it out after it gets a KO, but also make it hard for Metagross to get on the field to begin with. Darmanitan, Toxtricity, Chandelure, and Zarude are all faster Pokemon that can threaten with super effective STAB moves or powerful Choice-boosted attacks, although none can really switch in safely.. (double punctuation)

**Ground-types**: As Metagross rarely runs Ice Punch, Ground-types tend to fare well. Steelix has to worry about boosted Earthquakes some, but its high Defense lets it take a couple when necessary while being able to easily handle Meteor Mash. Rhyperior and the rare Mudsdale are shakier answers as they don't deal with Meteor Mash as well, but both have much higher Attack stats with which to threaten Metagross with their STAB Earthquakes.

[OVERVIEW]

Metagross is one of the best Steel-types in the RU tier thanks to its great all-around stats, good offensive coverage, and key utility options. Its great Attack stat, natural bulk, and good resistance profile allows it to be It makes for (we just did the whole 'three good things' schtick last sentence; if you wanna keep some of these traits, put em there) a reliable Stealth Rock setter that doesn't let up on offensive pressure, making it a great pick for more offensive teams. Those same Its resistances and natural bulk let it serve as a very powerful Choice Band user as well, and its Speed is just high enough to be an effective Choice Scarf user on certain teams. Metagross's lack of reliable recovery means that its good bulk and resistances can only take it so far when it comes to taking hits. Its average Speed also leaves it prone vulnerable to a myriad of offensive Pokemon, including faster wallbreakers like Obastagoon, Heracross, and Darmanitan, once it has picked up a KO. Clear Body is a niche ability, but can aid Metagross against the rare Sticky Web teams as well as against Incineroar, a common pivot into most physical attackers. (dunno what this is doing here)

Metagross's good typing, high Attack stat, and solid natural bulk combine to make it a reliable Stealth Rock setter on teams that don't want their Stealth Rock setter to doesn't give up offensive pressure. Earthquake nails reliably 2HKOes the likes of Incineroar, Registeel, and Stakataka for reliable 2HKOes. Hammer Arm is a notable alternative to maintain Steel-type coverage for Steel-types while hitting Zarude much harder, although it becomes very difficult to threaten Fire-types or and Galarian Slowbro without Earthquake. Toxic is a fantastic last move on this Metagross as because no Poison- or Steel-type would dream of switching into it, thus allowing Metagross to reliably land Toxic against desired poison desirable defensive Pokemon, such as Milotic, Porygon2, and Umbreon. Grass Knot is a great lure move for Seismitoad should a teammate benefit from its weakening or outright removal. Bullet Punch can pick off weakened opponents foes in a pinch, but doesn't offer much else.

Metagross isn't able to effectively threaten bulky Water-types outside of crippling them with beyond ('crippling' is a pretty threatening word) Toxic, so it's very helpful to have teammates that can pressure or remove them. Roserade handles these bulky Water-types as well as Raikou and Xurkitree while forming a powerful entry hazard setting duo with Metagross, as it too doesn't give up offensive pressure to set up Spikes. Toxtricity, Zarude, Raikou, and Xurkitree are powerful offensive threats that can force out bulky Water-types while bringing Metagross into better matchups through U-turn and or Volt Switch respectively. Togekiss and Sylveon are good Fairy-types to use with Metagross as they can provide Defog and or Wish support respectively in order to let Metagross take hits more freely. Galarian Weezing can utilize Defog as well or set up Toxic Spikes to potentially allow Metagross to use another move over Toxic while also taking Knock Off much more comfortably than Togekiss due to its lack of a Stealth Rock weakness. Late-game cleaners and powerful wallbreakers that appreciate Metagross's ability in to reliably spread Toxic are great options as well.

Metagross's incredible Attack stat and good natural bulk allows it to make for it a powerful Choice Band user. Earthquake crushes opposing Steel- and Fire-type Pokemon, such as Registeel, Cobalion, and Incineroar. Bullet Punch can pick off weakened offensive threats, (comma) such as Heracross and Zygarde-10% while also having a chance to clean up weakened offensive teams. Zen Headbutt is the preferred last move to 2HKO all bulky Water-types hoping to take one of Metagross's other attacks while also reliably OHKOing Thundurus, which otherwise can take any one other attack. Explosion is a fine alternative that allows Metagross to take a huge chunk out of something while providing a safe switch in for a frail, offensive teammate once Metagross has no more use. Adamant is the chosen nature as because only Modest Toxtricity and the rare Timid Choice Specs Sylveon are outsped with a Jolly nature.

As Metagross is able to consistently break down opposing defensive cores, late-game cleaners are ideal choices to capitalize on this. Sharpedo and Swords Dance Cobalion are good sweeping options as they that appreciate Metagross reliably pressuring or outright removing bulky Water-types from the game. Roserade provides Spikes support to aid in wearing down the likes of Steelix and Suicune while also checking Xurkitree and Raikou, both of which can revenge kill a slightly weakened Metagross once it has KOed something. Porygon2 is able to switch into various faster special attackers attempting to revenge kill Metagross, such as Chandelure, Toxtricity, and non-Focus Blast Thundurus, and is able to safely bring Metagross into battle with Teleport. Other physical attackers, such as Zygarde-10%, Obstagoon, and Heracross, (comma) can team up with Metagross to overwhelm physical walls that the opponent might rely on to take their hits.
