Defensive Moltres has key defensive utility in a metagame dominated by threats such as Scizor, Buzzwole, and Jirachi. It's good typing, nice bulk, and access to reliable recovery allows it to check these threats consistently over the course of a game. Flamethrower is used over Fire Blast due to its greater consistency and larger amount of PP. Hurricane allows Moltres to push damage onto threats such as Salamence, Infernape, and Starmie, as well as secure an OHKO onto all Buzzwole. Moltres is a competent Defogger, as it forces out top threats such as Scizor, Jirachi, and Infernape, therefore giving it opportunities to clear hazards, while also beating Skarmory, the tier's best Spikes user. However, keep in mind that it loses 1 on 1 to many of the tiers Stealth Rock users, including very common ones such as Mega Diancie and Terrakion. Toxic is a decent fit onto this set over Hurricane, as it allows Moltres to cripple Pokemon such as Latias, Rotom-H, Mega Altaria, and Hippowdon. Flame Body is used to punish Scizor for U-turning on Moltres consistently, as well as crippling Jirachi, Buzzwole, and Weavile. However, Pressure can be used if Moltres is used on bulkier teams in order to PP stall hazards from the likes of Hippowdon and Krookodile. Max Speed is recommended in order to outrun Rotom-H and Buzzwole as well as speed tie with opposing Offensive Moltres.

Defensive Moltres fits very well on balance teams due to its utility in checking the aforementioned top threats while also acting as a team's hazard control. Moltres' ability to check threats such as Scizor and Jirachi is greatly appreciated by a wide variety of threats. In particular, Latias greatly appreciates the removal of the aforementioned two, and it uses Moltres' ability to roast most of the tier's Steel-types to its advantage. Other partners that appreciate those two being consistently forced out include Mega Diancie and Mega Altaria. Moltres appreciates complementary defensive support in order to shore up its weakness to Water-, Rock-, and Electric-type attacks. Water-types such as Rotom-W, Slowking, and Amoonguss are options for Water-resists, and the latter two usefully check Urshifu-RS consistently. Ground-types such as Hippowdon and Krookodile also provide Moltres with backup defensive utility while also laying Stealth Rock for Moltres's team. The viable Water-Ground-types of the tier, Swampert, Seismitoad, and Gastrodon all have notable defensive synergy with Moltres, with the former two also laying Stealth Rock and the latter two featuring a Water-immunity thanks to their abilities. Knock Off is a constant problem for Moltres due to it relying on Heavy-Duty Boots in order to come in consistently, so Knock Off absorbers like Buzzwole and Z-Move Infernape are good partners as a result.

Offensive Moltres makes use of its high Special Attack stat, excellent STAB combination, and good survivability to become a long lasting and powerful offensive threat. In addition, its defensive typing and Roost allows it to still check Scizor well, therefore giving it notable defensive utility. Fire Blast is preferred for the higher overall damage output, but Flamethrower is a more consistent alternative. U-turn allows Offensive Moltres to keep up momentum against common switch ins like Blissey, Rotom-H, Rotom-W, and Mega Diancie. Heavy-Duty Boots is vastly preferred to any power boosting item, as it allows Moltres to come in and perform its role consistently. A set utilizing Flyinium Z might seem tempting due to it patching up Hurricane's unreliability to an extent and allowing Moltres to nuke threats such as Latias, Hippowdon, Mega Altaria, but the amount of support it requires means that it is not preferable.

Offensive Moltres is a good fit on Bulky Offense and Balance playstyles thanks to its ability to apply offensive pressure while also providing these teams with notable defensive utility. Moltres is generally tough to wall, but it dislikes a select few threats who either have the bulk to take it on or resist its STAB moves. This list includes Blissey, Rotom-H, Rotom-W, Mega Diancie, and Mega Aerodactyl. An option that deals with these threats is highly beneficial. Weavile, in particular, stands out as a partner, as it takes advantage of Moltres pivoting out of these threats, therefore getting it in easily and allowing it to fire off a STAB move. Even if it doesn't OHKO the Rotom appliances, it is capable of Knocking their item off, making them bad long term checks to Moltres. Moltres tends to struggle against Stall, as that playstyle tends to feature several Pokemon that Moltres naturally struggles against. However, Moltres does force out Skarmory, a staple of the playstyle. Pack a teammate that deals with Stall, like Calm Mind Keldeo or Nasty Plot Grimmsnarl serve as good partners as a result. Moltres is not a perfect answer to Scizor on its own due to its reduced bulk without investment, and it is worse against threats like Jirachi as well. Therefore, solid backup options against these threats, such as Hippowdon, Skarmory, and Mega Steelix are nice options as a result.

I would slash U-turn with Defog and maybe Hurricane

Defensive Moltres has key defensive utility in a metagame dominated by threats such as Scizor, Buzzwole, and Jirachi. It's good typing, nice bulk, and access to reliable recovery allows it to check these threats consistently over the course of a game. I would also mention that, while it is a defensive Pokemon, it is also capable of threatening a number of common defensive Pokemon even without investment by virtue of its typing and strong STAB. However, keep in mind that it loses 1 on 1 to many of the tiers Stealth Rock users, including very common ones such as Mega Diancie and Terrakion I would mention that very few bar Mega Diancie want to switch into it directly. Max Speed is recommended in order to outrun Rotom-H and Buzzwole as well as speed tie with opposing Offensive Moltres I would mention Tapu Bulu, Scizor and Mega Altaria here and remove Rotom-H as this Moltres doesn't really beat Rotom-H without Rotom-H being extremely low.

U-turn allows Offensive Moltres to keep up momentum against common switch ins like Blissey, Rotom-H, Rotom-W, and Mega Diancie Mention Latias as while Latias has a chance to be 2HKOd it still outspeeds and threatens Moltres, and is a top tier threat so it is especially notable.

An option that deals with these threats is highly beneficial. Even if it doesn't OHKO the Rotom appliances, it is capable of Knocking their item off, making them bad long term checks to Moltres.
