the best place to discuss this is my art thread, even if i have nothing to show right now.
It's kinda hard to explain what I am trying to do without photos, but I figured out how to stuff a v1 Nintendo Switch into a slim Neo Geo Pocket Color shell. This will be my upcoming hardware project.
Someone managed to stuff an Orange Pi 4 into a GBA shell, but Dr. K is a madman. It shows how powerful of a single-board computer (SBC) can fit into a shell like the Game Boy Advance, Neo Geo Pocket, and so on. He has also stuffed a graphics card onto a giant handheld while still running on battery banks, reminding me of what the hell I was figuratively smoking a year ago. I am acknowledging my video sources even if I have discovered similar situations independently from others.
The goal here is not only to stuff the Switch itself into this shell, but also to insert a Dock and additional power source as well. However, the first-party dock is not just picky on which power supply it needs, but it also relies on the Power Delivery (PD) protocol. Another content creator I follow, Bringus Studios, has also attempted to power a Nintendo Switch on the go using the XREAL Air 2 as a display, which is a pair of AR glasses. This display needs HDMI from the dock, but Bringus, like many other folks, understands that there is stigma against third party docks. As a result, Bringus also found out that he needed a battery that supports PD.
However, PD cables are difficult to cut open and put back together, so I opted to try a 5-volt USB-C to USB-A cable with a third party dock I had lying around. It honestly acts more like a glorified USB-C hub, so I tried it with the USB-A slot on one of my battery banks in a different build. Surprisingly, video put out on my external display after plugging in HDMI and power to the screen! I was surprised it even worked at all!
Now that I know 5V works, the only concern here is taking apart a Nintendo Switch unit that is not the Lite. At least three of the boards on that system are mandatroy, and I will have to sacrifice active cooling. Guess Scarlet and Violet will chug even harder than they already do on stock unless I slap a Noctua on the hamheld...
The videos posted here are obviously not mine and are only posted here to acknowledge what made me think this was a good idea.
EDIT: I guess the GBA was too tiny for a Switch, and Switch needs a lot of weird workarounds to work well, even with a third party dock.
