Welcome to the first edition of the National Dex Community Create-A-Team (or CCAT). The objective of this is to build a competitive viable National Dex OU team that can be used effectively in the current metagame. We'll go through each team slot initially, providing sets and explaining why they would fit on the team. After sets have been posted, we'll vote for which set we think would be best suited for the team. Once we've done this for all six teamslots, we'll go through and fix any issues the team had initially. Three cheers for teamwork!

Rules:
  • Please refrain from posting bad or "gimmick" sets. Innovation is fine, but I reserve the right to exclude objectively bad sets from voting.
  • When posting a Pokemon, post it with a moveset, and a few sentences of description on why you think it fits the team and why you chose the moveset you chose.
  • When voting, you can only select one or two submissions. Explanations of votes are nice but not required.
  • Feel free to discuss other submissions, but please only refute others' sets with solid reasoning (as opposed to "I hate Magearna so I don't want to include it").
  • Remember that this team is for the [Gen 8] National Dex format. Any pokemon that are NOT available in this format will not be included. I don't want to see a Dracovish or Zamazenta-C being posted here.
  • Have fun!

Melmetal @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Atk / 12 Spe
- Double Iron Bash
- Fire Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Toxic

Melmetal is a super cool mon that I think is underrated. Although a little hard to build around, it can still pack a punch and its Toxic+Leftovers set is much more flexible than its ever-present Choice Band set. The EV's improve Melmetal's bulk and offensive prowess and its speed is to just outspeed Toxapex as to dunk it with a Thunder Punch. Fire Punch is also boosted by Iron Fist and deals with mons that Melm can struggle with, like defensive steels such as Mega-Scizor and Ferrothorn, both of which get annihilated by Fire Punch (make sure you're not staying in on Heatran tho;;). Toxic is a really nice addition to cripple offensive switch-ins and its natural defensive bulk + leftovers help it contribute to the team. This mon usually fits best on bulky offense and balance and again is an underrated mon. Thanks Solaros for starting this thread; CCAT's are always cool to do.

Grimoire of Mansa (Hydreigon) @ Dragonium Z

- Nasty Plot
- Draco Meteor
- Earth Power / Flash Cannon
- Roost

Offensive Hydreigon has been relegated to the shadow realm in the wake of Blissey, but has always been regarded as a threat on a team without the blob or a Fairy. Well, Blissey is on the decline, and Fairies still aren’t too keen to take +2 attacks when they have other Pokemon to check. Hydreigon also acts as a solid offensive check to several threats that a team can struggle to deal with, notably Heatran, Ash-Greninja, and Reuniclus. For this reason, I think Hydreigon should be the Pokemon the team is centered around.

pretty solid mon which can set cm up while also checking mons such as hydrei, mlop, kyurem and mlatias
It can break most mons with multiple cms up which unless theres a strong poison or steel type move its gonna be hard to kill.

Kyurem @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Freeze-Dry
- Ice Beam
- Draco Meteor
- Earth Power

Kyurem is a truly monstrous breaker right now. Blissey has slowly been getting worse and teams have naturally become more aware of this Pokemon. Finding solid Ice resists is very difficult, with only a few Pokemon being able to take Kyurem's STAB combination; Mega Scizor, Heatran and Aegislash for example but none of the are actually safe at all. The best part about this Pokemon is that it has quite a few opportunities to come in; Teleport is outstanding right now, its ability to easily threaten Landorus-T, Toxapex and Slowbro is huge as it will always get a big hit off on the opposing team. Yes it does need a bit of support, but the rewards it gives cannot be understated.

(nick obv optional)

Mega Heracross is an extremely potent anti-metagame wallbreaker, capable of outright winning on preview against common balance and bulky offense builds, such as those reliant on Defensive Landorus-T or Slowbro for physically defensive walls, as Heracross can almost outright ignore their existence due to a stellar combination of bulk and attacking stats. Notably, it also benefits from a metagame so filled to the brim with pivots able to get it in safely on a variety of passive defensive threats or slower offensive threats (see: Heatran). While some of the above may be suggesting relatively “standard” sets, I think getting outside of the box in this first cycle would really let the creativity of the community shine in new and engaging ways.

MEGA SLOWGRO

Slowgro (Slowbro-Galar) @ Slowbronite
Ability: Regenerator
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 32 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Slack Off
- Shell Side Arm
- Scald

Its no secret I am not fond of defensive pokemon (Finch plz the ppl want to know) but this set right here fits incredibly niche into our current metagame and stands out for its ability to set up against and beat a large number of both offensive and defensive sets getting high usage.

Especially with the utility of type changing as a mega this mon deals with ALL THREE S tier attackers: Cinderace, Magearna, Landorus-T along with countless other big names like Melmetal, Tapu Lele, Excadrill, Mega Lopunny, Mega Medicham and Mega Scizor and with the right predictions and mega even Rillaboom can get 50/50'd . In general with access to mega you have one of the most versatile physical walls in the game with the ability to change types and abuse regenerator.

Given its immunity to toxic it can deal with and set up against a wide variety of defensive mons such as Both Clefable's, Blissey, Moltres, Slowbro, Corvinight, Alomomola, Reuniclus, and defensive Zapdos.

With screens you are damn near invulnerable and can set up on almost anything easily beating stuff this thing has no right to such as Kartana, banded Weavile, Tyranitar and Rillaboom, Gliscor is effectively neutralized while screens are up and at +1 with screens you beat specs koko even if youre already turned into a water type.

Biggest threats:

Haze Toxapex can beat this set, however scald can be switched to psychic to remove this problem, without haze pex is passively useless against this and having a regen t spike absorb can help your pex matchup even if its losing to haze. if you do not have psychic you can certainly bluff it since its more common than scald in usage on slowgro.

Trapper Heatran can beat this set(along with theoretically almost all the other mons that exist) however with screens up u can do some 50/50 shennanigans with toxic/vs earthpower since your scald becomes something like 1.9x as powerful when you mega.

Specs Greninja is annoying out here on some dark pulse shit luckily u can plop a blissey on basically any team and now u get regen + momentum off switching out and gren is typically not that hard to chip especially if you run screens with this thing.

Hydreigon is also scary to deal with but like with Greninja, blissey solves this issue positively.

Gastrodon is always annoying but here its no different, clear smog hard walls this set otherwise you can beat it with screens up

Mega Gyarados: annoying for any fat mon but u can hax burn it and then its useless
Prediction Advantage:
This mon has an unusual advantage with its mega type change where predictions are reduced even further in likelyhood since your opponent has to consider u mega-ing or staying unmega'd or even switching to regenerate. Playing with this mon feels like youre a turn or two ahead and a lot of teams are totally unprepared.

Matchup vs Current Meta
Most teams will have at most 1 mon stopping this set from sweeping, and those mons (Pex) are typically already being strained and pressured by other members of your team. Out of our current 7 samples, 2 teams have only a sole defensive check (Gastrodon, Toxapex) 2 have only one offensive check(Ash Gren) and the best prepared team had 2 viable counter play options(Mega Gyara, Rillaboom) which can both be played around.

Naive Nature
- Encore/Stealth Rock
- Diamond Storm
- Moonblast
- Earth Power/Mystical Fire

Mega Diancie is quite a potent threat right now, as teams sometimes struggle to be able to switch in safely. If paired with Magnezone, it opens a few free slots that we can take advantage of. One of those being Encore, which it gained this gen. This move can potentially let you make switches that would otherwise seem ridiculous, such as coming into Gliscor on Swords Dance and forcing it out, or even switching into something like Calm Mind Clefable or Reuniclus, to force them out.

So I want to build around this badass

Magearna @ Weakness Policy

All hail Magearna... This can setup against the most random of things and once it does it's game over.

Tapu Lele @ Choice Specs
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Moonblast
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Tapu Lele is not really seen right now, but it's a really cool mon to play with. I really think it's underrated, because it can work with strong Pokemon in the tier, especially Cinderace, and there are very few switch-ins because of it's ENORMOUS Psychic Stab. It's best counters in SM, Celesteela and AV Magearna, aren't played that much, and other possible counters like Corv usually don't run a lot of SpDef and Heatran fear Focus Blast. It still has some problems, it's poor speed and defense stat make it very vulnerable to revenge-kill, and Lele is very complicated to play with.

Slowbro @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Future Sight
- Slack Off
- Teleport

Slowbro could be cool with Hera, since it is forced to switch often because of his typing and his speed, and Slowbro can solve to that with Regenerator and his ability to come on multiple threat like Landorus, Lopunny or other (Not counting Cinderace tho, it's obviously going to get banned.). They also have a great typing together, Slowbro can switch on Psychic or Fire attack and Heracross can take very easily most Dark attack. It's moveset is also useful, Future Sight pressure Toxapex, Landorus and other physical wall, Scald leaves more occasion for Heracross to Set-up and teleport bring it safely.
There are probably other better idea, I'm not 100% sure about it, even though Slowbro is very good right now, maybe a bit more time for that slot could be good for people to get idea, idk.
