Hewo again, Pannu is off searching for more cringe pfps so I'm here again! Big congrats to sigmatecture for winning counters with Mega Latias, and NuttyRabbit for winning checks with Gastrodon! Y'all will be added to the HoF whenever Pannu finally finds another avatar to cut ppl with edge.

Tyranitar @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Crunch
- Superpower
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit

Choice Band Tyranitar is an utterly devastating threat, capable of 2hkoing most pokemon with the correct move, and living many hits with its phenomenal bulk and ability. What mons can limit the threat this miniature godzilla poses?

Submission deadline is April 3rd at 11:59 GMT+1

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Frustration
- Close Combat
- U-turn

Check. Nothing much to explain here—Mega Lopunny outspeeds Tyranitar and eviscerates it with Close Combat or grabs momentum from it with U-turn. It can switch on its STABs, but its low bulk limits it to only being a check and not hard counter.

(Counter)

Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 Spe
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost
- Spikes
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
(That set fits on fat and stall teams.)
If you put enough speed on Skarmory, you can easily counter band Ttar. Crunch does 50% maximum, but you just react by clicking roost, and they just die from rocky helmet chip. (You could also kill it with body press). Stone edge does more, but roost just removes your weakness, and you can very easily PP stall stone edge. Banded superpower doesn't kill you, since they inflict 50% on the switch, 66% max roll if they click superpower again on the Roost, then 50%, and so on.
Also, that set also counters SD Mawile and can kill an unsuspecting Zone at +2, which you can outspeed if they are modest (+2 72+ Def Skarmory Body Press vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Magnezone: 316-372 (112.4 - 132.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO).

(btw there probably is a way to optimize the EV HP/Def spread to make Skarm bulkier on the physical side, but I'm not sure how to do that without running one billion calcs or doing literal Calculus)

Submitting hippowdon as counter :hippowdon:

Hippowdon @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic

Its easy to see why, resisting one stab and having the flexibility of recovery, hazards, status, rocky helmet chip and a super effective attack means finding the right button to click tends to be pretty easy. Not to mention sand immunity on top. Heres relevant calcs-

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 142-168 (33.8 - 40%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 88-104 (20.9 - 24.7%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

The benefit of hippo over other counters is not having to risk or worry about being crit by rogue stone edges. The only relevant fear is getting crit or a drop from crunch, god forbid both, but getting the chip from helm is still relevant and its pretty easy to find a crunch switchin on most teams, and hippo is typically a mon that is easy to find a slack off on most other physical mons. Even on the very rare occasion you may find yourself against an unholy ice punch ttar, hippo still takes less than 50%.

Submitting water bear as a check.

:ss/urshifu-rapid-strike:
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Protective Pads
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Aqua Jet

Urshifu resists virtually all of Tyranitar's moves and OHKOs it back. With thick 100/100 physical bulk, the tardigrade can switch in comfortably on Ttar's STAB Dark- and Rock-type moves, as well as tank errant coverage like Earthquake or Superpower. At worst, it can generate huge momentum with U-turn if your opponent pulls out; at best, it can score severe chip or a kill (168+ Def Corviknight needs to be >70% to switch into CC, Clefable >85% for Surging Strikes, etc). Wearing Protective Pads to guard from chip and status, plus being naturally resistant to Stealth Rock, makes Urshifu a rather long-lived offensive check.

I use this because I miss Cinderace.

Adamant Nature
- Grassy Glide
- Wood Hammer

- U-turn

Submitting :rillaboom: as a check!

Rillaboom can pivot in on ttar via double switches or pivot moves such as teleport from slowking/bro/blissey, voltswitch from magnezone, and uturn from mega lopunny, threaten out TTar with STAB, Grassy Terrain, Choice Band boosted Grassy Glide, or pivot out with uturn to preserve momentum, and still chunking tar in the process.

:rillaboom: calcs
252+ Atk Choice Band Rillaboom Grassy Glide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar in Grassy Terrain: 440-518 (129 - 151.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Rillaboom U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 226-266 (66.2 - 78%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery

:tyranitar: calcs

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Rillaboom: 240-283 (70.3 - 82.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage and Grassy Terrain recovery

Nominating Tangrowth as a Check

:ss/Tangrowth:

Tangrowth @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power Ice
- Sleep Powder

Rocky Helmet Tangrowth can come in on most of CB Tyranitar's moves (barring Stone Edge with rocks up) and avoid a 2HKO, after which it can thraten it out/neutralize it with Sleep Powder, Knock it off and ensure that it can never touch Tang barring conesecutive Edge crits/Crunch defense drops, or just threaten a 3HKO with Giga Drain.

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 169-201 (41.8 - 49.7%) -- 26.6% chance to 2HKO after sandstorm damage

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 135-160 (33.4 - 39.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and sandstorm damage

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 169-201 (41.8 - 49.7%) -- 26.6% chance to 2HKO after sandstorm damage

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 169-201 (41.8 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and sandstorm damage

0 SpA Tangrowth Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 116-140 (34 - 41%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Nominating Landorus-T as a Check

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off/Toxic
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock

Defensive Landorus-T can safely come in on CB Tyranitar's moves barring Stone Edge (91.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock) following intimidating it, threatens Rocky Helmet chip barring Stone Edge, and following such chip, can OHKO it with SR up after Earthquake (50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock), and safely OHKO with attack investment if chosen. With further defensive investment, it approaches counter territory, as it only needs 16 EVs invested into it's speed to outspeed Adamant CB Tyranitar. Given this, with max defensive investment (240 def, 16 speed), Tyranitar only has a 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock. Given that Tyranitar would be locked into a move, Landorus can also pivot out and switch to a teammate that resists the move the opposing Tyranitar chooses to gain momentum on it, making Landorus-T a hard check (not quite a counter). Oh and did I also mention it doesn't take sandstorm damage?

Congrats to Roginald for winning counters with their submission of Hippowdon, and Solaros & Lunaris for winning checks with their submission of Mega lopunny! For this week we have an often overlooked threat:

:ss/gengar:
Gengar @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Nasty Plot
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball

Boasting perfect coverage alongside the dangerous Nasty Plot, Gengar poses as an extremely threatening wallbreaker. Using Substitute to take advantage of opponents who try and switch around it, it can often decimate unprepared teams. What ways can you think of to stop Gengar's onslaught?

Submission deadline is April 14th at 10pm gmt-4

:ss/kommo-o:
THIRD ISLAND (Kommo-o) @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 240 SpD / 16 Spe
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Drain Punch
- Earthquake
- Toxic

Thanks to Bulletproof, Kommo-o completely blanks this Gengar set outside of using the Z-Move. However, since Kommo-o falls to a Never-Ending Nightmare, this is only a hard check. Other than that, there’s not much to say; just Earthquake it regardless of if theres a Substitute up or not.

Submitting Weavile as CHECK.
:sm/weavile:
Weavile @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Triple Axel
- Pursuit
- Ice Shard

While not being a counter to Gengar due to Focus Blast, Weavile patches up this shortcoming by reliably revenge trapping it considering it's not behind a sub. And when it is, you click Triple Axel which beats Gengar behind the sub. Weavile fits on a variety of teams making this a nice splashable check.
