The Next Best Thing is a project where users search through the listed Pokemon's movepool and post about it. In your post, explain what it does and why it should be used over a standard set.

How does it work?
Every cycle a new Pokemon will be chosen for participants to create a new creative yet effective set, and this set should not be in progress of being written or already uploaded on the Smogdex. The participants will get 3-4 days to make their set and create their post. People may discuss the set posted during these days, the following two days there will be a vote to represent the most creative yet effective set. After the voting, the winner will have been announced and their post will be archived.

Rules
  • Feel free to be as creative as possible, but you must be able to showcase the viability of your set. Replays are a good asset to demonstrate your arguments - especially for newer players - but are not compulsory.
  • Your set may not be changed after the voting phase has begun, but may be changed prior to the voting stage.
  • You may only submit one set per week.
  • You cannot vote for your own submission.
  • Do not post sets that have either been reserved or have been posted. However, you may reserve a set if the reservation has not been altered for over 24 hours.
  • Please do not make a habit out of not following up on your reservation.

Cycle 1

:ss/Primarina:

Ever since the departure of Blissey and Galarian Slowking, Primarina has been a menace to many common teams. Its common Choice Specs set has very little consistent defensive counterplay, whereas sets like Calm Mind are able to fully take advantage of common checks like Amoonguss after a few boosts. Due to its relatively large movepool and interesting abilities such as Liquid Voice, there's a lot to experiment with!

Deadline is March 3rd

Primarina @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Whirlpool
- Perish Song
- Protect
- Flip Turn / Substitute

Trap things, spam Protect, remove things, win matches, become a known player, win tournaments, earn money, become famous, thank me for showing this set.

reserving Screens Prima

:ss/primarina:
Primarina @ Light Clay
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 164 Def / 92 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Misty Explosion
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Encore

Dual Screens is an interesting way of using Primarina, as it also stands out as a Screen setter that can generate momentum for the HO team, while matching up well versus WaterShifu among other threats courtesy of the typing, Encore is also neat for locking faster Pokemon into Defog (great for Bisharp abuse) while the Speed outruns Skarm before it can potentially Taunt you.

reserving Resttalk prim

:ss/primarina:
Primarina @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 132 Def / 124 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Despite this set being just stolen from SS UU, its amazing utility cannot be ignored. Primarina stabs are fairly easy to throw around and specially when Scald burns through most of the things that wanna switch into you such as Amoonguss, Slowking or AV Tangrowth while also being a surprisingly decent check to things like Urshifu-RS, Mega Altaria, Keldeo or Salamence thanks to the investment in HP and Def, Resttalk allows it to abuse the passive walls and stay up for a longer game such as Hippowdon or Defensive Moltres that usually just chip the usual Specs or Sub CM variants so they win in the long run. I may have not tested much but i think i can say its fairly decent

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8nationaldexuu-1517866245-nvxsqrxllu1vrf2r5gysjey0p2ugwg9pw Primarina constantly coming in on most of Mareanies team and pressuring with strong moonblast despite the lack of investment and a scald burn on Hippo that allowed it to Rest much more safely in the long run

Primarina @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Moonblast
- Psychic
- Calm Mind

THis allows it to be powerful immediately while being able to boost against forced switches and being a much bigger threat who can overcome its threats like amoonguss, melm, steels in general and it bluffs 3 attacks CM as you hit very hard and they can assume you are 4 attack lefties which allows you to take advanatage of many scenarios

CM 2 Atk Rest
:ss/primarina:

Primarina @ Leftovers
Ability: Liquid Voice
EVs: 252 HP / 132 Def / 124 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Snore
- Moonblast
- Rest

A very funny set, p self explanatory I think. The spread allows u to outspeed Bulu without any speed investment (this speed tier also includes Melmetal, which could be useful), while still having a good physical bulk. It can easily abuse stuff like Hippowdown, Mega Altaria, Slowking, and obviously Keldeo and Shifu. You just come on those things, and start to stack some CM. Snore combined with Liquid Voice gives you a STAB when you're asleep, making sure you're not passive and it has a 30% to flinch.

Primarina @ Throat Spray
Ability: Liquid Voice
EVs: 168 HP / 64 Def / 252 SpA / 8 SpD / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hyper Voice
- Psychic
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss
Intricate ev spread (343 = 7^3 hp stat, 200 defense stat, 270 spdef stat, 160 speed) that maximizes draining kiss recovery while still preserving the necessary bulk to live certain hits. throat spray lets prim boost its spatk while threatening out grounds and slow bulky mons. Then you blast the hyper voice switch in with coverage or set up on it pretty freely with cm. max spatk dkiss hits really hard on neutral targets with a boost and also recovers a ton of hp.

Congratulations to Lupla for winning Cycle 1 with his RestTalk set! Your victory will be added to the Hall of Fame shortly.

Cycle 2
:bw/dragonite:

Dragonite has had an interesting history within the tier. Originally being banned way early on in the meta, it was later unbanned in The Great Unban Wave. With sets such as Dragon Dance combined with Z-Moves + Multiscale, Dragonite has potential to be a huge threat in the metagame. Are you able to find Dragonite's secret potential?

Deadline is March 11th

Dragonite @ Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 248 HP / 188 Def / 8 SpD / 64 Spe
Impish Nature
- Substitute
- Roost
- Dragon Dance
- Fly

classic flynite. here's what the spread does :
- outspeed zeraora after 2 ddance
- prevent band melmetal from breaking the sub with the first hit of double iron bash
the set is p self explanatory, u sub on stuff like teela and slowking, stack ddances and sweep.

252+ Atk Choice Band Iron Fist Melmetal Double Iron Bash (2 hits) vs. 248 HP / 188+ Def Multiscale Dragonite: 162-192 (42 - 49.8%) -- approx. 3HKO

Dragonite @ Darkinium Z
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Hone Claws
- Dragon Rush
- Stone Edge / Extreme Speed

Z-Hone Claws boosts Atk by two stages and ensures Dragon Rush and Stone Edge hit, dealing a huge damage with unresisted coverage.

:bw/Dragonite:
Dragonite @ Weakness Policy :Weakness Policy:
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Agility
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw/Outrage/Dual Wingbeat
- Roost/Extreme Speed/Fire Punch

Weakness Policy works great in conjunction with Multiscale as it's able to take super-effective moves a lot better. Agility gives +2 Speed unlike Dragon Dance so I find it's able to outspeed some of the more faster threats and even some Choice Scarf users that +1 Speed usually doesn't.
