Grass Steel

[Overview]
<p>With amazing defenses and fantastic typing, Nattorei is nearly impossible to OHKO even against OU's best sweepers. Without a fire or powerful fighting attack, Nattorei can stop an pokemon in its tracks. Even better, it has stealth rocks, spikes, and TEN resistances and one immunity. However, Nattorei does have its drawbacks. Its is left with a poor special attack stat, and no recovery move aside from leech seed and ingrain. Thus, it is useful to have wish support to keep Nattorei alive for as long as possible. Even with these drawbacks, Nattorei is still one of the best walls in 5th generation.

[SET]
name: Entry hazard lead
move 1: Stealth rock
move 2: Spikes
move 3: Gyro Ball
move 4: Explosion
item: Leftovers/Occa Berry
Nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP/ 160 De/ 92 SpD/ 4 Atk

[SET COMMENTS]
<p>The basic premises of this set is to set up as many entry hazards a possible before Nattorei faints. As long as the opposing pokemon doesn't cary a fire or fighting move, Nattorei can usually survive long enough to set up stealth rocks and at lest on layer of spikes. After setting up, Nattorei can then Gyro ball, which benefits from base 20 speed, or explode when on low health. A good choice to reliably set up your team to sweep.

<p> The HP evs are needed to make up for Nattorie's decent hp stat (74 Base). It allows Nattorei to reach 352 HP. The defense evs let Nattorei to take hits from offensive leads and take all other hits very well, and, incase sp. attacking leads, Careful nature boosts Nattorei's sp. defense stat. Occa berry can help survive a fire type attack, while leftovers increases longevity. Also, the defense evs put steel thorns (ability) to good use.

[Additional Comments]
<p> If you are more scared of special attacking fire attackers or need more sp. defense on your team in general, then switch the defense EVs around. Gyro ball can be replaced with payback, but gyro ball usually does more damage.

<p> Remember that Nattorei CANNOT supply rapid spin, so is helpful to have a tentacruel, which resists both of Nattories weaknesses, has rapid spin and toxic spikes, and is more special defensive to assist Nattorei. Even though Nattorei is unlikely to switch, Wish support can be used.

<p> If you want to, remove spikes and leave on stealth rocks and replace it with something else, like power whip.

[SET]
name: Defensive Toxic stall
move 1: toxic
move 2: protect
move 3: leech seed
move 4: gyro ball / substitute
item: leftovers
Nature: Impish OR Careful
evs: 252 HP / 252 De OR 252 Spd / 4 ???

[SET COMMENTS]
<p> Nottorei functions exceptionally as a Toxic stall. The basic way to use Nattorei is to come in on a weak attack, then set up. Toxic and leech seed together make for a quick KO, and protect prevents Nattorei from taking damage and stall leftovers and leech seed recovery. The last move slot is up to preference. Gyro ball gives you an attacking option, while substitute stalls even better and is even more annoying.

[Additional comments]
<p> It's worth pointing out that leftovers and leech seed recover 3/16 HP every turn, meaning that every two turns is 6/16 HP recovery, or 1/4 HP. meaning that you could make on substitute per two turns. If you look at it, Nattorei can actually ALWAYS, once set up correctly, beat the opposing pokemon with sub strategy, making it a clear advantage over gyro ball. However, switching by the other pokemon makes Nattorei "restart," so If you want to, you can replace leech seed with payback or shadow claw.

<p> Evs are simple. For defense, option one is for you, and option two is for sp. defense. The last four go wherever you really want, as it doesn't really matter. Blissey is a fantastic special wall and goes well with defensive variants of Nattorei because of Wish, and Weezing for sp. Defense. In addition Tentacruel is ALWAYS and option for Sp. Wall.

Final [SET]
name: Novelty
move 1: Thunder wave
move 2: Swords Dance
move 3: Iron Head / Gyro Ball
move 4: Power Whip / Shadow Claw
item: leftovers / muscle band
Nature: Adamant
evs: 200 Atk / 40 speed / 140 HP / 40 De. / 88 Spd.

[SET COMMENTS]
<p> This set aims to sweep with Nattorei. Yep, that's right. Sweep. Well, start off with a thunder wave to allow Nattorei to move faster, Swords dance to boost Nattorei's middling attack, the try to sweep, and thunder wave the next pokemon to come out. Iron Head is better in my opinion because of the flinch bonus, but Gyro ball is more powerful. Power Whip gets STAB and is poerful but has low pp and slightly low accuracy, while Shadow gets the critical bonus and hits Ghosts types, but it's not the best choice.

<p> Nattorei wants to be able to set up without fainting, of corse, so evs are put into defenses to allow time for Nattorei to use thunder wave and swords dance. Speed isn't all that important because of t-wave, so not many evs are needed there. Attack for obvious reasons. Adamant for attacking power, and leftoves lengthens survival time. Or, Muscle band raises power.

[Additional Comments]
<p> If you want more power add more Attack evs and reduce Defense evs, and vise versa depending on your tastes. This set REALLY could use wish support, so you may want to have.

[Team options]
<p> Nattorei is best used to set up rocks or spikes, so he works well on a sweeper team with another defensive pokemon. As mentioned earlier, Tentacruel resists both of Nattorie's weak moves, can spin away stuff, and can be a goos sp. wall. Ground types take care of Heatran and Infernape well, mainly Hippowdown and Swampert are effecrtive. Stall teams can use the stalling Nattorei effectively. Remember to watch out for things like HP fire and Fire punch.

[Optional Changes]
<p> Occa berry or chople berry can be used if your afraid of supereffective moves KOing Nattorei. Thunderbolt can be used only for Garydos, but even then it won't kill it. Rest is Nattorie's only full recovery move, and can form a chesto-rest set. Nattorei can use sunny day, so you can use it to set it up for the team.

[Counters]
<p> Nattories defenses make it difficult to counter, but against any fire type, Nattorei is always at least a 2KO. Sweepers that can't OHKO it need to be wary of status. Nattorei won't have a hard time setting up unless faced with a potent threat, so if a lead variation comes out, switch and kill it. Machamp leads also threaten Nattorei, so they really work well. If a pokemon is out and can't 2KO it, then Nattorei will really make things look easy.

<p> Nattorei isn't the hardest hitter, so don't expect it to badly hurt any of your pokemon without status. The less time it has, the less it can do. Remember that when facing Nattorei. Final note: Banded and Specs pokemon can hurt it.

[Dream World]
<p> Nattorei doesn't get one.

This is my FIRST pokemon review. Comments and recommendations are VERY welcome. I hope the picture works...

Hello. First of all, I really recommend you change the language of this analysis. Smogon analyses in general prefers third-person writing, and to put it simply, "you" are not a Pokemon, nor are "you" using any moves. To have an example of this type of writing, take a look at a 4th generation OU analysis, or look at Zekrom's WIP to see what the style of writing is like. The analysis could also be more sophisticated in general.

The moves and items of the game also needs proper punctuation, so that can be easily fixed. And I also want you to decide on the main EV spread of the sets, not using "OR" or question marks. The reader needs to know why that spread is good, and if there is an alternate EV spread that can take its place. I recommend the "better" EV spread.

Oh, and by the way, the pic doesn't work. Try the animated sprite gallery at Arkeis: http://www.arkeis.com/animatedsprites.html.

Eh, you might want to include a mid-game supporter set; the one that just keeps switching in to your Kingdra time and time again, letting lose some Thunder Waves and even attempt a 3HKO with Power Whip. Not sure about the EVs and nature, but the general idea is:

Nattorei @Leftovers/Shed Shell
~Thunder Wave
~Stealth Rock
~Spikes/Leech Seed
~Power Whip/Gyro Ball

I think 252/252 on the physical side with a +Def/-SAtk Nature would do the trick, as Nattorei is sill specially bulkier than max SDef Forretress EVEN with no investment (as said in the SmogCast #6). More points can be allocated for SDef if Nattorei is meant to be a special wall; however Blissey can do a better job. Nattorei still has its selling points in Water/Electric resisting and a superior defence stat.

-All paragraphs should finish with a '</p>'. eg.

As stated above give more in depth analysis of Nattorei and please when you write an analysis its a good idea to skim read it to find any obvious mistakes ;p

- There is a specific format for set layouts, please look in this thread but I'll just post the guideline here to make it easier.

[SET]
name: Inset set name
move 1: toxic (Always capitalize moves) 'Toxic'
move 2: protect 'Protect'
move 3: leech seed 'Leech Seed'
move 4: gyro ball / substitute 'Gyro Ball / Substitute'
item: leftovers
Nature: Impish OR Careful no 'or', simply insert a slash 'Impish / Careful'
evs: 252 HP / 252 De OR 252 Spd / 4 ??? One spread is enough, talk about the secondary spread in your 'additional comments' section.

The ev spread section has a set order:

HP / Atk / Def / SpA / SpD / Spe with a gap between each stat and the slash.

So after editing your set block should look like this:-
[SET]
name: Defensive Toxic stall
move 1: Toxic
move 2: Protect
move 3: Leech Seed
move 4: Gyro Ball / Substitute
item: leftovers
nature: Impish / Careful
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

'an' is only meant to be used before a vowel, but you use it before the word 'Pokemon' which is a not a verb.

Also I appreciate that this is your first analysis, but try to avoid stating the obvious ;p Make these changes and put some more analysis in there and you done yourself a good job!!

After using Nattorei extensively i truly believe Leech Seed needs a slash next to Stealth Rock (which alot of other stuff learns and is easier to fit in on teams than Spikes),this is its best way of healing and Nattorie is a darn good seeder. Its one of the reasons its rather annoying to switch into and it even lets it stall out near every wall, it also racks up damage with layers and wears down counters. It keeps Nattorei really healthy and is essential imo.

Power Whip should be primary option over Explosion, which should be in set comments imo. Explosions nerf really sucks and it does like 2 damage to everything. Meanwhile Power Whip actually lets you beat bulky waters and also Gyarados.

The nature should be Sassy/Relaxed to power up Gyro Ball. Relaxed needs a mention because it avoids the 2hko from Ononokusu's DD LO EQ iirc.

name: Entry hazard lead
move 1: Leech Seed / Stealth Rock
move 2: Spikes
move 3: Gyro Ball
move 4: Power Whip
item: Leftovers/Occa Berry (set comments for Occa imo, i mean this isnt Metagross where you can ko fire types back with EQ, Natt really wants his Lefties)
Nature: Relaxed/Sassy
evs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 160 Def / 92 SpD (Fixed formatting)

Also if a set is novelty i dont thing it warrants mention really. Maybe in OC. Along with T-Wave and Level Ground. Shed Shell too to escape Zone.

I think the Toxic seeder needs logs of it in action, im really not sold. It looks like it loses to alot of things and to be more of a liability and total set up fodder really.

Anyway, for team options Gyarados is worth a mention, they cover each others weaks phenomenally well and Rest Talk Gyara can shuffle hazards around your opponents team with Dragon Tail or Roar or just DD up and sweep with hazards supporting this. Same with Salamence. Blissey and Vap are good to keep it healthy with Wish and take most fire attacks with ease. Mence can Wish too come to think of it lol. Also mention ghosts who stop Rapid Spin, mainly Burungeru who is an amazing partner also resisting fire.

Scizor is also an excellent counter, he can U-Turn away Leech Seeds, SD up or just hit Nattorie with CB SuperPower. Roobushin too for obv reasons.

Also adding to the more detail.

Way too many spelling and grammar mistakes in there. Remember to capitalise Pokemon and move names, things like Special Defense should also be capitalised and not abbreviated. The whole tone of the analysis is also way too informal, you should not be writing things like "Yep" and "If you want", I would strongly urge to read the onsite analyses first to get a sense of the "voice" we want in our analyses, what you're got up there looks decent for a skeleton but for it to be a proper write-up it needs a complete overhaul.

I stumbled upon this set and it works quite well. I have my lead Dualscreenswine to make Nat even bulkier

If I can make a set suggestion?

name: Curse
move 1: Curse
move 2: Gyro Ball
move 3: Payback/Seed Bomb/Level Field
move 4: Leech Seed/Ingrain
item: Leftovers
Nature: Careful
ivs: 0 Spe
evs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD

-Focuses on SpD, so that any non STAB/Sunny Day fire attack usually won't kill it (in my experience). Focus Blast/Vacuum Wave is also worth watching out for, but not nearly as dangerous.
-Bring it out on something like Forretress and spam curse while it sets up, then sweep.
-Main attack is Gyro Ball. 0 IVs in speed squeezes as much power out of it from the get-go, in case you're pressured into attacking straight away.
-Secondary attack is to taste. Payback takes advantage from Nattorei's low speed, Seed Bomb for the STAB, and Level Field for fire types (especially Heatran), but only if you've baton passed Amnesia support or Drought (Light Screen and Rain Dance aren't recommended due to short duration and time needed to set up).
-Recovery move depends on preference. Leech Seed does some damage while you set up, Ingrain restores less but protects your set up from Whirlwind/Roar. Ingrain also leaves you vulnerable to fire types by way of disabling switches.

Curse set is extremeley effective if excecuted correctly.

Nattorei @Leftovers

Relaxed~ 144 HP / 192 Def / 172 SpD (reaches 325 HP/380 Def /311 SpD-rather solid.)

~Curse
~Leech Seed
~Gyro Ball
~ Protect

While the EV's and protect may seem preposturous, this was jus a "test run". Iv'e made several sweeps, and won a match 6-0 (nattorei swept all 6) with this set. As long as you have stealth rock, and don't keep it in on an obvious thret, it works great.

A specially defensive rest set worked really well for me

Calm Nattorei @ Leftovers

*Rest
*Curse
*Gyro Ball
*Earthquake / Power Whip

178 Hp | 252 SpDef | 74 Atk

Works well with a defensively oriented team. Earthquake hits Magnezone hard, but if you plan on using Shed Shell anyways you might enjoy to double STAB, despite the sub par coverage.

Just a quick note on Gyro Ball being completely ineffective on the thunderwave swords dance sweeper due to thunderwave reducing your opponent's speed. So yes, Iron Head would be better.

I would recommend a Speed-lowering nature on any Natorrei utilizing Gyro Ball. Nattorei's is shitlessly slow, so there's no need to outspeed things. Not only does a hindering nature make Gyro Ball a bit more powerful, Natorrei actually recieves an upper hand against Trick Room teams, where Rankurusu is a bit faster than Natorrei and you can eliminate some Trick Room threats such as Rhypherior and Water-types (Power Whip).

With Leech seed nmd Lefties, you would be getting OVER 1/4 health, and would actually gain health, coupled with Steel thorns

The way I see it, Nattorei has quite a few roles that he can fill. A set that's worked really well for me is this:

HazardLead
Sassy/Relaxed
252 HP / 129 Def / 129 SDef
@Rugged Helmet
  • Stealth Rock
  • Spikes
  • Leech Seed
  • Power Whip/Gyro Ball

The EV's will allow Nattorei (with a Sassy nature) to hit 330 in both defensive stats and 352 HP. SR first, then proceed to layer spikes or lay down Leech Seed, and switch to another Pokemon, preferably a DualScreener like Cresselia or a pHazer like Skarmory. Nattorei could even stay in for quite a while using Power Whip off of a solid Base 94 Attack. Rugged Helmet is usually a pretty gimmicky item, but when combined with one of the best abilities for defensive type Pokemon, Iron Barbs, it actually does great things. Every physical move that makes contact with Nattorei ends up taking away 25% of the attackers HP. That's x2 SR damage AND Natt's Defense and HP are so high so that this technique will see a ton of use.

Have you actually tested this set? It seems really inefficent, Nattorei is so slow that most mons will outspeed even after thunder wave, so it's pretty pointless move if you aim to sweep with it(and it also lowers gyro ball's power as was mentioned earlier). Iron head in general is quite poor, it doesn't have all that high base power, flinch chance is useless on something as slow as Nattorei and it has crappy coverage with Power whip (or any other attack Nattorei has). Dunno, maybe i'm wrong, but this set looks like a bad gimmick to me.

If you actually want to use Nattorei for sweeping, curse set suggested in this thread is a much better choice. Also, you should definetly include mid-game supporter set posted by min min (though i'd slash leech seed next to stealth rock instead of spikes, as former is easier to set up by other members of the team). It's Nattorei's most useful set imo (and most common atm i think) and it fits on large number of different teams.

Explain what Pokemon has Leech Seed, Spikes, and SR legitimately together and can breed with Nattorei. The three are illegal together on Nattorei: You can choose 2, but not all three.

Leech Seed (and Seed Bomb/Bullet Seed)+SR is legal by Gen IV Torterra, who shares the Plant egg group with Nattorei. Leech Seed is a levelup move for the world turtle, and it gets Stealth Rock in Gen IV via TM. Torterra does not learn Spikes, and it's the only Pokemon that legitimately gets both outside of egg moves.

Leech Seed+Spikes is legal by Cacnea/Cacturne, who learn both moves via level-up. It it also legal via Marakacchi and Roserade, who both have either egg move access or level to both moves. None of the three get Stealth Rock.

SR+Spikes is legal by chain breeding Spikes via the Ishizumai evo line. Ishizumai, the hermit crab, gets Spikes as an egg move and SR by level. Additionally, both it and Nattorei are in the Mineral egg group, so they can breed...surprising as it sounds.

Why do I doubt the legality of this set again?

I actually did some crazy chain-breeding for this set to work. Enough effort will yield results. Hardly any egg moves are impossible to combine. I never understood why people whined about illegal egg moves. I focused a lot on breeding in past gens; it's kind of what I am, a breeder. I know what I'm doing. But it is difficult and a long process. Anywho, if you want, I could give you an egg to prove my point (that is if egg swap is still here; haven't checked).

P.S- Even if this doesn't work, you could always Ingrain, although that's a better move with a Swords Dance set to avoid any unwanted Skarmory from ruining it all.

@Rugged Helmet

Just wanted to say that this should definitely be slashed in on one of the gimmick or novelty sets or something. Shed Shell or just Lefties are obviously more competitively viable, but on the other hand there are a lot of resisted physical attacks you can switch it to to make them lose 25% of their health. I can see it being really great on teams that utilize a Magnezone/Shandera lure, and then having Natt come in and set up Leech Seed.

One of the highlights of my Gen 5 PO career so far is when I switch Rugged Helmet Nattorei in on one of those Chillachino guys with Skill Link using Sweep Slap. Did ~10% to me, managed to KO himself. So worth it. :U

Rugged helmet is great because even if Natt gets, say... Fire Punched, it will be able to endure it for at least a 2HKO (From non-STAB'd/Boosted Pokemon)and deal 50% back plus Leech Seed/Power Whip damage.

Also, the Chirachino self-KO is just great! But it's still a great 'mon...It's on my team with Natt.

if your going to use a non cursing/non Swords dance direct attacking nattorei use claw sharpen so that power whip doesn't miss on you.
