RU Next Best Thing is here for Sword and Shield! This project tasks the most creative of participants with finding underexplored sets for familiar Pokemon, in order to let them function in a new and useful manner. This project is meant to encourage exploration of a Pokemon in the RU Metagame. With this in mind, not every set will become a metagame staple, and that's ok! We're here to discover what each Pokemon can do, so no matter the purpose of the set you make, your contribution is valuable. We're doing this both for research and for fun, so don't be afraid to give it a shot!

So, how's this going to work?
Each week, a Pokemon with the potential to have many options for sets will be selected. Participants must try to create a new set for it that is not already considered one of its main sets (either already in the Smogon Strategy Pokedex or in the process of being added). Participants will have from Saturday until Wednesday (GMT +8) to create their set. On my signal, a vote will be held in order to choose which set is the most creative and viable in the current Gen 8 RU metagame. Once the votes are tallied and a winner is selected, the set will be listed in the Hall Of Fame below this post and the process will start over with another Pokemon.

VERY IMPORTANT RULES
  • Feel free to be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets, especially if yours does not appear much different from the standard ones. It is also important that you understand the difference between a creative set and a gimmicky set- this project is meant to use creativity to maximize a Pokemon's potential, not produce gimmicks. We may disallow sets if we deem them too gimmicky, situational, or unoriginal.
  • Avoid using single move/item changes, as they do not explore untapped potential of a Pokemon, but rather augment what we already understand of a Pokemon.
  • Feel free to post replays of your set in action! This is a great way to show how your set can be game changing in certain situations.
  • We appreciate suggestions for Pokemon to cover in the future, but please directly send those to myself rather than posting them in this thread!
  • Do not change your set after voting phase has started- doing so will result in disqualification.
  • You may not vote for your own set or persuade people to vote for you- these will also result in disqualification.
  • You may reserve a set, but if you haven't properly filled it in within 2 days of your reservation it may be taken by someone else.
  • You are required to have fun!

Banned deucer.
stealing the most evident of calm mind deeder

:ss/indeedee:
Indeedee (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psyshock
- Mystical Fire
- Dazzling Gleam
- Calm Mind

able to turn the tides on players who switch in their Indeedee answers expecting a Choice-locked Psychic only to be met with a furious Life Orb boosted rabbit with a calm mind under his belt. truly a terror and can shred balance teams with its impressive coverage and staggeringly powerful Psychics.

Indeedee (M) @ Wise Glasses
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Mystical Fire
- Dazzling Gleam
- Draining Kiss

The new Tapu Lele saving the differences. Share a good ability like Psychic Surge. It has interesting coverage with Mystical Fire for steel like Ferro. Wise Glasses is rare but you can pretend to be specs / scarf without being forced to change plus an increase in special attacks. DKiss as the last place that also serves as a recovery method.

Indeedee (M) @ Throat Spray
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Hyper Voice
- Mystical Fire
- Dazzling Gleam

A set I have been experimenting with for a bit. It functions similar to a Calm Mind variant, but allows you to remain proactive by attacking with Hyper Voice instead of boosting passively. Best utilized mid- to late-game since it does not have the immediate power of a Choice-Specs set.

Indeedee (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Mystical Fire / Hyper Voice
- Dazzling Gleam
- Magic Room

For those who dont know, magic room makes all held items have no effect at all for 5 turns. Indeedee has the freedom of a filler slot for the specs tbh and you are pressing stab (or stabs if you run hyper voice) and the occasional dazzling gleam. Magic Room disables heavy duty boots which many mons rely on, choice scarf on opposing revenge killers and indeedee can turn the tables on em with this and mons with passive recovery via leftovers so 2hko-ing stuff becomes easier. In most situations you will prefer to press buttons but magic room can get you out on some scenarios where the ability to switch moves becomes handy in a pinch, you obviously lose the power of specs to keep that in mind.

Since there’s a leaderboard, here’s our scoring system:

1st place - 3 points
2nd place - 2 points
3rd place - 1 point

Every 5th week is a double round, meaning 1st place gets 6 points, etc.

Indeedee (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Mystical Fire / Hyper Voice
- Dazzling Gleam
- Future Sight

Another version of Specs Indeedee but you change the last move. Future Sight gives an option to force in Dark / Steel types a few turns later as you try to get your Passimian or other Fighting-type in before that happens. With this set you can really mess a team up as not many mons can take a specs future sight.

We have a winner! Congratulations The Amuse for 1st place, Mavis for 2nd, and MrAldo for third place!

Week 2

Why not start Week 2 with one of the new UU drops? Rotom-C has proven itself to be a threat in the metagame, but can you make a set out of it?Here’s the link to the analysis, note that since there aren’t any official RU movesets, we are using the UU movesets.

You may begin submitting!

I have decided to release a Hall of Fame and the leaderboard early! This will be updated each week so you can find out the winners of each week! With that, the leaderboard will no longer be released every 5 weeks, but every after each week!

Week 1 Winner: Calm Mind by Mavis

Week 2: TBA by TBA

1st - Mavis - 3 pts
2nd - The Amuse - 2 pts
3rd - MrAldo - 1 pt
4th - Tie between Dreamcatcher and Taerim - 0 pts
Sorry guys! I have gone Steve Harvey mode for the first time ever! 1st place is actually Mavis and her CM set! Submissions for Week 2 end Saturday!

It’s a tie between Mavis, MrAldo, and The Amuse, so I decided to place Mavis in first, The Amuse second, and MrAldo in third, so my vote (though voting is over): A>E>D

Rotom-Mow @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt
- Leaf Storm
- Stored Power

Life Orb Nasty Plot Rotom-Mow with Stored Power as grass lure + breaker after you kill that annoying Vileplume. Requires Life Orb in order to HKO Vileplume after SR damage, and Leaf Storm with +2 and Life Orb its just too powerful in general.

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Rotom-Mow Stored Power (60 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Vileplume: 322-380 (90.9 - 107.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Rillaboom: 316-373 (92.6 - 109.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm vs. 188 HP / 168+ SpD Snorlax: 343-406 (67.5 - 79.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Vikavolt: 300-355 (93.4 - 110.5%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

Rotom-Mow @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Discharge
- Leaf Storm
- Pain Split

This is the set I've been working with since drops, and it functions as a general pivot that can threaten common Rocks setters such as Rhydon and Mudsdale, while pressuring bulky Water types like Vaporeon and Jellicent. Discharge is preferred over Thunderbolt so it has a better change at crippling switch-ins that seek to revenge kill it or defensive checks that resist its STAB combination while still dealing damage. Leaf Storm is important to pressure the bulky Water types and Stealth Rocks setters it wants to switch-in to and is almost as necessary as Volt Switch, which is the move that lets it switch out against all non-Ground types and allows it to perform its role as a pivot. Pain Split is so it can capitalize on predicted switch-ins into Pokemon that can usually tank a hit by sapping some HP off of them, which combined with Leftovers forms a semi-reliable way of recovering HP. Max Speed investment is so it can outspeed the max invested 85s that would like to revenge kill it such as NP Toxicroak, while 252 SpA EVs are so it can hit neutral switch-ins as hard as possible.

It is time to vote! We have received 2 submissions, but which one will be the most creative and viable set for you? We have . . .

A - Life Orb by Hot N Cold
B - Pain Split by Heracross2.0

Voting ends in 24 hours. We are again using Ranked Pairs format, but due to some people sending Ranked Pairs in small letters which resulted in difficult calculations, we will only be counting votes submitted in CAPITAL LETTERS. Don’t vote for yourselves!

And . . . we now have our own banner! Thanks once again to Jolly Togekiss ^-^ for the banner!
