Project Next Best Thing: USUM UU (Week 45: Jellicent - Submissions)

Latias (F) @ Groundium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Earthquake
- Recover/Defog/HP Fire/Ice Beam

Classic 'screw you Muk' lati set. You hit it with a Draco on the switch followed by Z-EQ for the kill. Last slot is flexible depending what your team needs.

252 SpA Latias Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 180 SpD Assault Vest Muk-Alola: 106-126 (30.1 - 35.8%) -- 36.2% chance to 3HKO
0- Atk Latias Tectonic Rage (180 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Muk-Alola: 246-290 (70 - 82.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

BoltBeam Latias

Latias @ Electrium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Thunder
- Calm Mind
- Recover

This set aims to lure in common Latias answers in Scizor, Aggron, Stakataka, Sylveon, Doublade, Primarina and Empoleon, among others, just as effectively as CM 3 Attacks Electrium Z while acting as an effective wincon vs Balance/BO in much the same way as the CM Dragonium Z set. It combines the longevity of the second set with the surprise factor of the first, meaning it very rarely does nothing in matchups, only really invalidated by Blissey or a healthy Muk. BoltBeam Latias is also super easy to bluff with, clicking one of Ice Beam (scarf), Thunder (Electrium Z) or CM/Recover (Dragonium Z) helps it bluff any of the common blacklisted sets surprisingly effectively. Anyway, I’d recommend trying this out, it’s definitely an underrated set that deserves to see more usage, just partner it with anything the appreciates the aforementioned steels being removed!!

Also, sorry if this doesn’t make much sense, I’ve been on the road for the last 13 hours :OOF:

Alright, time to reopen this project! First off, we've got a bit of an announcement to make: Sage has stepped down as cohost of this project, and Darksafadao has taken her place! Welcome!

Anyways, thanks for the wait, everyone. Let's get to our next week.

Ah, Mega Venusaur. This recent drop has been stirring a lot of controversy as of late, and for good reason. It's one of the most, if not THE most, dominant Pokemon in the tier currently, and its high bulk and decent offensive presence make it hard to stop in many situations. It's not well-explored yet due to the short time it's been here, so there's plenty of room for creativity this week!

The following sets are blacklisted:
Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 120 HP / 252 SpA / 136 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Synthesis
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Giga Drain

Doing this cuz why not

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 160 HP / 252 SpA / 96 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Since serperior left, why not try this with a new grass type?!?! Pretty much what i thought when i did this, never tested it, but you know what, oh well. Speed to outspeed PRimarina, max SpA to hit decently hard, and the rest into hp for bulk.

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite

EVs: 120 HP / 252 SpA / 136 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Growth
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb

I used this set to get reqs. Paired with a wish support (Alomomola) to maximize efficiency. Growth allows Venusaur-Mega to stallbreak if crobat is weakened, +2 giga drain will drain more hp than seismic toss does with blissey, so you can beat it 1v1. Speed EVs is here to outspeed adamant full speed Scizor, and HP dump to increase Venusaur's bulk.

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Petal Blizzard
- Earthquake
- Knock Off

Venusaur has a decent attack stat so I thought why not try a physically offensive set? It's kind of a lure for any speciallaly defensive Pokemon like Blissey into taking physical hits. Boost with Swords Dance, then attack. Petal Blizzard is STAB, of course. Earthquake is so Venusaur can nail Fire-types and Steel-types that resist its STAB. It also is a decent option for dealing with Mega Manectric. Knock Off provides great utility and is especially good at nailing Latias on the switch.

Curse Venusaur

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake/Knock Off
- Petal Blizzard
- Curse
- Synthesis

Curse allows this Venusaur to underline its bulkiness, while you increase your Atk stat.
With two boosts you can tank powerful hits even on the physical side of the spectrum; the special one is already covered well with max SpD EVs + a Careful nature.
4 Spe EVs allaws you to outspeed 0 Spe Venusaur with a neutral nature, in order to have the possibility to move first before the set-up.

Growth Synth + 2 atks is the most effective stallbreaking Venusaur set in my opinion, Synthesis + Giga Drain allows you to beat every single member used on stall teams barring Crobat, effectively 1v1'ing Blissey, Alolan Muk, Mega Aggron, and Doublade. The downside of this set is that you are pretty hard walled by Scizor, so pair with a Scizor lure and a Pursuit Trapper to deal with Crobat on stall (Krook works great here), and enjoy smashing fat. Since it isn't running HP Fire, there's no need to creep Scizor, allowing you to use a little more bulk. Here's a replay showcasing a 1700s stall matchup, except this one was a lot quicker since the opponent wasn't using Crobat :P https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7uu-781880766 (ignore the incoherent yelling, this was after a long night out :|)

Also creds Moute for this set
