Project Next Best Thing: USUM UU (Week 45: Jellicent - Submissions)

Approved by Hogg and co, partially stolen from dingbat's op, ty friend, banner done by the lovely Lil Bean, thanks for her time and effort
Cohosted with Scizorphobic

What is this?:
The Next Best Thing is a project where the community comes together to really dive into a given Pokemon's movepool and find underexplored sets that show off the Pokemon's potential. I'm very happy to take over this project as it's somewhere I think players can share their creativity and insight on the metagame. Not every set will become a metagame staple, and that's ok! We're all here to discover what each Pokemon can do, whether it's a very limited lure set or something that becomes ubiquitous like Sub CM Chandelure or Pursuit Mega Aerodactyl. We're doing this both for research and for fun! So don't be afraid to give it a shot and take a stab at your most creative ideas, even if you're scared.

The Process:
Each week, I will choose a different Pokemon, one I deem worthy of a deep movepool and or options with regards to potential sets, and participants will try to personally create a new set for that is not already on-site or in the process of being put on-site. Participants will be given 5 days to create their set, with discussion about the particular sets being promoted throughout, and on the 6th and 7th day of the week, a vote will be held to choose which user's set represented the most creative and simultaneously competitively viable set to utilize in the current UU metagame. Once the votes are tallied and a winner is crowned, the set will be archived in the OP and the process will start all over again for the next Pokemon specimen.

What are we looking for?:
Specifically, I want to stress the importance of the balance between creativity and viability when picking a set to post for the Pokemon in question. There's a very fine line between a "creative" set and a "gimmick", and this project is not meant to produce gimmicks, rather emphasize the ability to think outside the box when using a specific Pokemon in order to maximize it's potential. Having said that, I would also like to deviate from simple one move / item changes. For example, using Focus Sash over Life Orb on Crawdaunt does nothing to show any untapped potential Crawdaunt has because we already have a basic understanding of what Crawdaunt does, it just sacrifices power in order to potentially get a free set-up or hit off. The same goes for using X-Scissor over Stone Edge on SD Cobalion (To be fair, this would have been fine last gen, but Celebi is not nearly as relevant this gen), it doesn't yield productive discussion or results for the project. I am looking for sets that test what we think we know about checks or counters, so-called standards, and what it means to be viable. Maybe a particular option for a Pokemon looks inferior at first glance for that particular Pokemon, but dig deeper and try and find what it might mean in the big picture, for the entire team.

IMPORTANT RULES:
  • Feel free to be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets, especially if yours does not appear much different from the standard ones. If you do not know which sets are standard, I will edit a link in to the analyses. I hold the power to bet sets if I believe they are either too gimmicky/situational or not deviating far enough from standard sets.
  • Feel free to post replays of your set in action; this will only help everyone (including yourself) understand whether/how your set can be game changing in some particular situations.
  • Do not change your set after voting phase has started.
  • I will also be participating in the voting process. I will count as one single vote, like everyone else.
  • During voting stage, please don't vote for your own set; if you think your own set is the best, just abstain from the vote.
  • This should be common sense, but please do not tell people to vote for you. This is cheating and will be treated as such.
On that note, the Pokemon selected will always be on the thread title. Happy Building!

Nominations will usually end on Friday
Voting phase will usually end on Sunday

This is a really cool set that can break stall with relative ease, it can burn many unsuspecting mons like Gliscor(not poisoned) and Hippowdon, which generally dont like getting burned. It also does well vs offense thanks to its high damage output. This set is best paired with status spreaders like Toxic Swampert and Mega Aggron(which can run both Thunder Wave and Toxic), it can also pair well with mons that like physical attackers such as Mega Sharpedo and Bewear being crippled, it can also be useful to cripple Alolan Muk's damage output.

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Hippowdon: 292-344 (69.5 - 81.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Hex (130 BP) vs. 244 HP / 0 SpD Gliscor: 351-413 (99.7 - 117.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Poison Heal
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Hex (130 BP) vs. 244 HP / 208 SpD Gliscor: 274-324 (77.8 - 92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Hex (130 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Tentacruel: 238-281 (65.5 - 77.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery and burn damage
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 72+ SpD Amoonguss: 277-328 (64.1 - 75.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery and burn damage
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Hex (130 BP) vs. 40 HP / 216 SpD Alomomola: 363-426 (75.4 - 88.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage

I know that Will-O-Wisp Hex Gengar is nothing unheard off but it isnt used much and definetly deserves more usage.

You can customize the attacks to be whatever you want, the only one that's necessary is HP Fire to put scizor in a complete checkmate. Having a random countersash mon is also a great failsafe against the myriad of physical dudes in the tier. I like to partner it with Blastoise so stoise doesn't have to worry about handling too many threats. Not the best replays but they get the point across

So I quickly realized like most other people that Gengar is pretty much stuck always being dead weight in any matchup with an Alolan Muk. I tried to get around that the best I could by turning Gengar into a bait for it. 0 Defense IVs let it always get OHKO'd by Pursuit even when you don't switch out which I actually found necessary since in testing it didn't die to Pursuit in one hit and then the DBond trade ends up failing. I used this alongside CM Dragonium Z Latias to help it sweep more easily but you could probably make a case for most special sweepers that lose to Muk. Also can grab some trades vs Swampert, Steelix, or other stuff it can't OHKO which makes it good to pair with stuff like Aero and BD Azumarill as well.

Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

- Shadow Ball
- Reflect Type
- Focus Blast

In a similar vein to TSR's set, normally Gengar is dead weight against matchups versus Alolan Muk. This set allows Gengar to Reflect Type on Alolan Muk, and then safely switch out against it, into something else that forces Alolan Muk out to take more chip damage without its reliable recovery. Fightinium Z is used to minimize damage from Knock Off should Alolan Muk choose to use it on the reflect type turn, while also hitting Steel, Dark, and Normal-types that might want to come in on a Sludge Wave or Shadow Ball respectively, potentially expecting a Choiced set as they see no Life Orb recoil. Gengar's All-Out Pummeling is able to OHKO Cobalion, Hydreigon, Krookodile, Stakataka, and a myriad of other threats straight out, and notably guaranteeing OHKOs on both offensive Scizor and Mega-Pidgeot after Stealth Rock damage.

Like Durza's set this one allows Gengar to substitute and disable Alo-Muk's pursuit and gain leftovers recovery while also being able to switch out. It is also very useful against pokemon like Gliscor who only have one move that hits Gengar. This set is also amazing against stall teams because many stall pokemon have only one move to attack Gengar, and substitute allows Gengar to not be paralyzed or put to sleep. Shadow ball in my opinion is Gengar's most reliable STAB, paired with focus blast for pokemon like Blissey, and all other Normal, Steel, Rock, and Dark types. Overall I think this is a cool set that doesn't get any usage.

Someone's probably used this set at some point, but it does speak to the versatility of even something as simple as the scarf set.

Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Thunderbolt/Trick
- Destiny Bond

Your typical revenge killer with a twist against teams that NEED something removed at the expense of Gengar's good looks.

T-bolt works great against stuff like Mega Shark or Mega Aero when Sludge/Shadow won't do enough respectively to take 'em out. Consequently, T-bolt will OHKO Aero 100% of the time after rocks, something Scarf Latias w/ Ice Beam struggles to do once in a while because rolls exist. If you don't care about those two offensive threats, Mantine will occasionally try to switch in and Defog, and t-bolt just messes it up. If none of those things matter to you, you can always opt for the double threat: trick/d-bond. Shut down Blissey and get a surprise KO. Idk. I enjoy it.

This set serves to be an excellent late game cleaner. Z Snatch boosts your speed by two stages and outspeeds every mon in the tier, while also taking advantage of Gengar’s feel movepool and excellent STABs. HP Ice KOes Gliscor, HP Fire can bop Scizor on a predict. The second slot is extremely flexible due to Gengar’s wide coverage. Sludge Wave hits most Shadow Ball resists for great damage, Focus Blast hits Dark-types such as Hydreigon and Krookodile, OHKOing after mild chip. Thunderbolt hits Tentacruel and Mega Pidgeot most notably, as well as having great neutral coverage in general. Finally, Psychic KOes stuff like Nidoking and Crobat, who you have a hard time KOing otherwise, as well as Tentacruel. Finally, Shadow Ball is your main STAB, allowing you to severely dent most offensive Pokemon.

252 SpA Gengar Hidden Power Ice vs. 244 HP / 0 SpD Gliscor: 336-396 (95.4 - 112.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Poison Heal

Here Gengar cleans up late game a Scarf Mienshao and a weakened LO Hydreigon after being given a chance to setup. Not the most shining replay, but the idea is there.

This team has ZSnatch Gengar, as well as the classic meeps EButton Krook + Mag combo first popularized in Xurkitree meta to deal with Scizor. Scarf Hydreigon is a dangerous revenge killer that help weaken teams early game, as well as chip Alomuk. Mega Manectric serves to be a pivot, a soft check to Mega Shark, as well as being an answer for threats such as Cobalion that would prove annoying to break otherwise. Finally, Crobat is there to pivot, and pick off weakened offensive teams, as most teams with the departure of Rotom-Wash don’t pack good switch-ins anymore. It’s a response to metagame trends such as lack of Flying resists, as well as the reliance on Scarfers/Scizor and a healthy Alomuk to answer Gengar.

This set isn’t one you can slap on a team and call it day, but with the right support, it can plow through offensive builds that rely on faster mons to revenge kill it, as well as pick off fatter teams once checks have taken some chip. It also works well vs Aurora Veil teams because you can Snatch as they set it. The best part is that Gengar can pick and choose most of its counters depending on the coverage move you pick, and that’s insanely useful, especially since you know the one or two things you put teammates in to beat, while being unexpected. If played well, the chances of a victory by your opponents will be snatched away
