Alolan Ninetales is a unique Pokemon in many different ways. Thanks to its ability Snow Warning and access to Aurora Veil, Alolan Ninetales is capable of filling a very specific role for specific teams in the tier. While Grimmsnarl can give Alolan Ninetales competition as a screens user, Alolan Ninetales is capable of setting both screens up in one turn, and only requires one moveslot, freeing Alolan Ninetales to do other things to support the team. Alolan Ninetales should be used to support set up sweepers with Aurora Veil, allowing sweepers to more easily set up in the face of danger. Aurora Veil is the crux of this set, supporting the whole team by reducing damage done by 50% for eight turns. Since Aurora Veil only works in hail, Hail itself is used to prevent other weather setters such as Tyranitar and Pelipper from blocking Alolan Ninetales from using Aurora Veil. Freeze-Dry is a form of consistent STAB, and allows Alolan Ninetales to hit Azumarill and Crawdaunt for super effective damage, set up sweepers who would otherwise use Alolan Ninetales as set up bait. Lastly, Hypnosis is a form of status, and can be used to buy Alolan Ninetales free turns to set up Aurora Veil. EVs and a Timid nature are used to make Alolan Ninetales as fast and as bulky as possible, to prevent Alolan Ninetales from being Taunted before it can set up. Light Clay is the item of choice, extending Aurora Veil's effect from five turns to eight.

Alolan Ninetales should only be used on hyper offensive team looking to overwhelm the opponent with powerful wall breakers and set up sweepers. When considering teammates for Alolan Ninetales, the first Pokemon to consider are powerful set up sweepers that benefit greatly when protected by Aurora Veil. Cloyster fits this description perfectly, enabling Cloyster plenty more opportunities to use Shell Smash and wreck havoc. Belly Drum users such as Azumarill and Kommo-o will be a lot safer and harder to KO behind Aurora Veil, both of which can also clean up teams in the right conditions. While type synergy shouldn't be considered too much, Alolan Ninetales is forced out by the likes of Scizor and Aegislash, meaning Volcarona would be an excellent teammate. Other set up sweepers such as Hawlucha, Crawdaunt, and Scizor all benefit greatly from the protection Aurora Veil provides. Defoggers can remove the protection of Aurora Veil, so Bisharp is a fine choice to take advantage of opponents who plan to use Defog. One thing to keep in mind when using Aurora Veil is that is does not protect against Critical Hits, meaning both forms of Urshifu can be troublesome for Alolan Ninetales and its teammates. While Urshifu won't stop a sweep cold, its important to keep this information in mind before trying to set up with your own sweepers. Previously mentioned Pokemon such as Azumarill and Hawlucha do well vs both forms of Urshifu. Lastly, entry hazards make it much easier to sweep, so Stealth Rock users such as Excadrill and Clefable can fit nicely onto these teams.
