What is Next Best's Thing?
The Next Best Thing is a project where players search through a listed Pokemon's movepool along with providing and explaining why this set should be used over a standard set. Every cycle/week, participants of this project will submit and create a new set for the selected Pokemon, and near the end of the week, voting will occur. From Monday to Friday, submissions will take place and on Saturday and Sunday, voting will occur for your nomination to possible be featured in our Hall of Fame!
Rules
You can be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets. It is also important that you understand the difference between a creative set and a gimmicky set- this project is meant to use creativity to maximize a Pokemon's potential, not produce gimmicks. We may disallow sets if we deem them too gimmicky, situational, or unoriginal.
  • Suggestions are welcome for Pokemon to cover in the future, but please directly send those to me in a DM rather than posting them in this thread!
  • Please do not reserve a set that currently has an analysis or is in the process of being created.
  • Voting for your own set is not allowed and advertising for people to vote for your set will result in a disqualification in your submission.
  • You may reserve a set, but if you haven't properly filled it in within 2 days of your reservation it may be taken by someone else.
  • Follow the forum rules, meaning that you shouldn't post one-liners, unless voting. Try to also avoid double-posting if possible.

Week 2 is over! I will be placing my vote for Hone Claws Skuntank causing LpZ 's submission to be inserted into the Hall of Fame, congratulations!

Cycle 3 - Wishiwashi?

Wishiwashi is an amazing pivot and check to our top Fire-types via Rapidash and Ninetales in the tier. U-turn safely pivots in a plethora of teammates such as Gallade, Ninetales, and Ninjask. Wishiwashi is also useful for spreading status ailments: Scald Burns and Toxic along with being a good Scald switch-in.

Wishiwashi @ Choice Specs
Ability: Schooling
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- U-turn
- Scald

Gotta love that immediate power from something that has the means to bring it. Wishiwashi has the ability to hit harder than a lot of mons that normally use Specs. Like, we're talking harder than Drampa when it was here. The moveset is pretty drab overall but the moves do hurt like hell. Imagine opposing mons trying to eat up a Specs Hydro Pump from this thing. They might be able to, but at a huge cost. Having no Hidden Power does hurt it for coverage, but it can still pivot on the bulky Waters like Jellicent, Gastrodon, and Poliwrath. And that's why you have 5 teammates right?

Wishiwashi @ Damp Rock
Ability: Schooling
EVs: 252 HP / 20 Atk / 236 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Liquidation
- U-turn
- Flip Turn
- Rain Dance
Rain is shut down by Ninjask which is broken at the moment sadly but Wishiwashi is a nice Rain setter and defensive pivot to bring in various weather abusers like Golduck, Poliwrath, or just Pokemon with Water STAB like Basculiun or Clawtizer. The SpD in general is used to help with special attackers like Ninetales and Frosmoth.

Wishiwashi @ Choice Band
Ability: Schooling
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Liquidation
- Facade

People's first thought when they see Wishiwashi , is often to status it so that its weakened. Façade fixes it.

ChestoRest Wishiwashi

Wishiwashi @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Schooling
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Scald
- U-turn
- Toxic
- Rest

General idea

The idea is to use Rest to recharge Wishiwashi's health and to get rid of a detrimental status by clicking Rest.
I think that Chesto Berry is better than Leftovers due to the base hp that, even when invested, is not that much. On the other hand, Rest works well because allows us to use this fish even twice at its fullest potential, whereas with Leftovers you'll need a lot of (predictable) turns with Leftovers+Protect.
The EVs spread is pretty standard.
Some good teammates are those with Aromatherapy/Heal Bell to use Rest more reliably.

Wishiwashi @ Leftovers
Ability: Schooling
EVs: 252 HP / 20 Atk / 236 SpD
Careful Nature
- Liquidation
- U-turn
- Earthquake

- Tearful Look

Tearful Look
is a lure to many physical and special Attackers alike and it can drop the attack and Spattack by 1 stage. Earthquake forces damage on Jellicent and Gastrodon, whereas Liquidation is its usual STAB. U-turn helps gaining and maintaining momentum over the course of the game.

Bulky HDB Pivot

:ss/wishiwashi:

Wishiwashi @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Schooling
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Flip Turn
- U-turn
- Liquidation
- Earthquake

This thing is adorable. Thankfully it is also a decently bulky, well oiled pivoting machine, which this set takes advantage of. This mon is able to get off a slow u-turn / flip turn consistently as it threatens out many pokemon in the tier. Not to mention, it is pretty unlikely for your opponent to assume that you have both of these pivot moves, giving you an extra element of surprise. They switch into their surefire answer Gastro? Turns out you have U-Turn as well!

Liquidation and EQ were chosen for at least neutral coverage on most things, with a strong STAB move in Liquidation. You will want to pair this with some decent support options to keep your school open. WishPort Clefairy and / or a cleric can fit this role nicely. You also really need something to deal with Gastro and Jelli, so pick your choice of the viable grass types.
