Other Metagames Orthridin's Looking Glass ( Gen 9 Stall, 40 - 1 winrate, Rank 1 on ladder, Gen 9 BH Gxe Record )

One would think that the healing nerfs in tandem with stronger offensive threats and the new mechanic in terastallization would mean that stalling in Balanced Hackmons would not exist in generation 9. However, stall has actually turned out to be by far one of the most consistent strategies so far in the generation 9 metagame. Now I realize what many are thinking here: How? The answer to the puzzle of the surprisingly high viability of Stall in the current metagame has to do with team and set diversity and how hackmons stall differs from stall in standard game modes. In the transition to generation 9, a lot of offensive threats were cut leaving the offensive pool less diverse. Diversity actually matters more to stall than raw power as stall can always use specific counters to counter stronger threats, but a high diversity of threats leaves stall struggling to cover everything at once. Hackmons stall also differs from standard stall in that it aims to minimize the time that is spent spamming healing moves and instead aims to grind out an opponent with passive healing such as Regenerator and Poison Heal and by stealing healing off an opponent with Imposters. As such, the healing move nerf actually makes the job of stall easier as it just makes the process of shredding balanced and bulky offense teams with statuses and hazards significantly more efficient.

Orthridin's Looking Glass:

Corrosive Thoughts (Blissey) (F) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Imposter
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Impish Nature
- U-turn
- Milk Drink
- Trick
- Whirlwind

Toxic Orb Blissey is the first component of the team's double imposter core and serves as the team's counterplay to opposing Poison Heal pokemon. Since Blissey has a massive 255 HP stat, its Pp resets upon switching out, and gains all the benefits Poison Heal Pokemon get from being Poisoned; it will always win 1 v 1 against offensive Poison Heal Pokemon and can infinitely Stall bulkier Poison Heal Pokemon. This trait of Toxic Orb Blissey is absolutely vital for the team as disruptive Poison Healers like Taunt Slaking and defensive Poison Healers like Ting-Lu, that would otherwise 6-0 the stall team turn into useful pressure points. Toxic Orb Blissey’s Tera Type of choice is Steel to improve its match-up vs non-ground coverage variants of Slaking and Contrary users. While Blisseys moves don’t matter terribly much, since it will almost always be transformed, the moveset I opted for was one of U-Turn, Milk Drink, Trick, and Whirlwind, to be able slow pivot into an advantageous pokemon, to Heal Blissey in the event it is low on Health and untransformed, threaten to give pokemon a Toxic Orb, and to phaze out special attackers that attempt to hide behind Substitutes.

Mirrored Dimension (Chansey) (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Imposter
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Roost
- Trick
- Whirlwind

The 2nd component of the team’s Imposter core, Choice Scarf Chansey, serves as a universal revenge killer and midground. Like Blissey, Chansey has a massive HP stat which it can leverage to 1 v 1 most Pokemon. However, Chansey is better equipped for this role in general since it doesn’t have to be concerned about racking up chip damage from poisoning every time it’s used for forcing out offensive threats or pp Stalling defensive pokemon. While Chansey can also use Eviolite, Choice Scarf was the item of choice for this build as Eviolite is unreliable for revenge killing special Contrary users like Eternatus because Eternatus and other Contrary Dragons can just aim to win the speed tie and Knock-Out Eviolite Chansey with strong Dragon moves. Like Blissey, Chansey uses a Steel Tera Type to improve the Contrary and Poison Heal Slaking match-up. Chansey uses a moveset composed of a healing move, a move to give an opponent an unwanted item, and a phasing move. The only difference between the movesets of Chansey and Blissey is the inclusion of Defog to remove hazards.

Imagined Leviathan (Dondozo) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Fur Coat
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- U-turn
- Scald
- Haze
- Slack Off

Dondonzo’s innate defense in tandem with the ability Fur Coat grants it obscene physical bulk and so it was selected for the role of the team’s physical wall. For perspective, even Choice Band Gorilla Tactics Zacian-Crowned struggles to break Dondonzo: 252+ Atk Choice Band Gorilla Tactics Zacian-Crowned Magical Torque vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Fur Coat Dondozo: 147-174 (29.1 - 34.5%) -- 4.9% chance to 3HKO. Dondonzo’s moveset consists of U-Turn to safely bring in Toxic Orb Blissey on Physical Poison Heal pokemon and for escaping trapping moves, Scald to make it so for every turn a physical attacker remains in the game there is the threat of a Scald burn, Haze to stop physical set-up sweepers in their tracks and of course Slack-Off to consistently remain healthy throughout the game. Dondonzo uses the item Rocky Helmet over the more obvious choice in Leppa Berry to consistently whittle away at the health points of physical attackers and to shred Population Bomb abusers that may attempt to set up on Dondonzo. The Tera type of choice for this team is Fire so Dodonzo can Tera into a better match-up vs Pixilated Population Bomb users that have Protective Pads, and can better handle Zacian-Crowned variants with grass or electric coverage.

Forlorn Prophet (Goodra-Hisui) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- U-turn
- Scald
- Rapid Spin
- Knock Off

Hisuian Goodra with its massive 150 special defense and excellent Dragon-Steel defensive typing serves as the team’s primary special wall and the first component of the team’s spin-blocking core (Mortal Spin is blocked by Goodra since it’s a poison-type move). Its already formidable special defense is sent into the stratosphere with the item Assault- Vest, which allows it to survive some of the strongest special attacks in the meta like Choice Specs Calyrex’s Astral Barrage. When the Assault-Vest boost is put in tandem with the ability Regenerator, it becomes exceedingly difficult for special attackers to make any progress. Goodra’s moveset consists of U-Turn to slow-pivot into teammates like Imposter Chansey or Prankster Arceus, Scald to spread burns across teams, Rapid Spin to remove hazards, and Knock-Off to KO Calyrex and remove items that can impede progress or offer significant damage boosts. Goodra’s Tera type is set to fairy to better absorb hits like Dragon Energy from Eternatus, Draco Meteor from Dragon-type contrary users, and Thunderous Kick from Zamazenta.

Fallacious Visions (Arceus) @ Leppa Berry
Ability: Prankster
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Careful Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Parting Shot
- Recover
- Haze
- Encore

Since Arceus Normal possesses so few weaknesses, is immune to Ghost, and has close to the best overall mixed bulk of any pokemon in the metagame, it was selected to serve as a universal check to set-up. Arceus uses the ability Prankster in tandem with moves like Haze, Encore, and Parting Shot to ensure it can move before most set up pokemon can and disrupt their sweep by removing their boosts before they can attack, locking them into moves that turn them into easy bait for Chansey or Blissey, and by chipping away at their attacking power with a priority Parting Shot. Arceus, unlike the majority of the team, uses a Leppa Berry. This is so as it is the only Pokemon on the Stall team that cannot siphon HP off an opponent or gain HP passively and isn’t quite bulky enough to conserve Recovers. Since Arceus is the only Pokemon that will spam healing moves in the Stall team, it thus is the only Pokemon that realistically need the additional Recovery pp to function. The Tera type that was selected for Arceus was Fairy to improve the match-up against threats like Choice Specs Hadron Engine Miraidon, Choice Specs Dragon Energy Eternatus, Belly Drum Triage, and Contrary Dragon types.

Onyx Apparition (Giratina) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Scald
- Baneful Bunker
- Court Change
- Stealth Rock

Giratina has a valuable Dragon Ghost typing and amazing physical and special bulk, which allows it to consistently switch into common defensive pokemon like Zamazenta and Ting-Lu without any fear of being trapped or their pathetically weak moves. As such, Giratina is a valuable wincon against bulkier teams since its ability Poison Heal ensures that wearing it down isn’t easy, while its Scalds and Stealth Rock enable it to quickly run balanced and semi-stall teams out of recovery pp via burn and hazard damage. The rest of its moveset is composed of Baneful Bunker to scout the moves of choice locked Pokemon and to threaten physical attackers with poison if they make contact, and Court Change to flip any hazards an opponent sets onto their side of the field. Court Change is placed specifically on Giratina to deny recovery to Imposters that may attempt to copy and use Court Change against Giratina. Giratina’s EV spread of minimum speed ensures that most pivots cannot safely slow U-Turn out into an offensive threat since Giratina’s low speed ensures that the offensive threat they are attempting to bring in is being hit by Scald. Its Tera type for this team is Ghost to remove its Dragon and Fairy weakness while also preserving its integrity as a Rapid Spin blocker.

Proof of Rank 1:

As can be seen above the alt I used for this team was Worthless Fleshbag.

Peak Winnrate / Gxe:

Threat List :

Shed Tail:

While Shed Tail is currently banned, much of the laddering took place pre-Shed Tail ban. Against Shed Tail, the optimal strategy is to attempt to bring in Chansey or Blissey in their base forms and attempt to phaze with Whirlwind. If that isn't a viable option vs the Pokemon that the Substitute was passed to, the optimal play is to go into one of the team’s physical or special walls and then slow pivot into Prankster Arceus to shut down any set-up attempts with Encore.

Belly Drum:

While Belly Drum is currently banned it was present for the laddering run, hence its inclusion on the threat list. Belly Drum is by far one of the scariest moves for the team because it leads to a guessing game between if the Belly Drum user is of the Extreme Speed or Unburdened variety. Generally speaking, the optimal plan is to attempt to scout and/or guess the type of Belly Drum user and react with Choice Scarf Chansey or Prankster Arceus accordingly.

Rage Fists:

Again while Rage Fists is currently banned it was a relevant threat for quite a bit of the laddering run. Vs Rage Fists, Arceus normal is the go-to answer as it can absorb the hit and Encore foes into Rage FIsts. Alternatively, Dondonzo can act as an answer as it has the physical bulk to resist damage even from Rage Fists that have obtained many boosts.

Shell Smash:

Shell Smash is the last of the now-banned threats the team encountered during the laddering run. The best options against Shell Smash strategies are generally Scarf Imposter Chansey and Prankster Haze Arceus, though Hisiun Goodra and Dodonzo can also attempt to win the 1 v 1 in a pinch.

Special Contrary:

Specially oriented Contrary users can fire off high base power moves whilst also being able to boost their attacks quickly. Ideally, you’d shut them down with Imposter before they can do anything, however that isn’t always practical as an opponent can switch in on a predicted Heal. In the case, a Contrary user gets onto the field the ideal play is to attempt to bring in Goodra and tank a couple of hits (Fairy Tera can help in times of desperation) and pivot out into Choice Scarf Imposter and go for the revenge kill. Alternatively, since Tera types stay with Imposter Chansey and Blissey, Tera Steel can act as a short-term solution to Contrary.

Poison Heal:

Opposing Poison Heal pokemon can be rather annoying since they can absorb Scald, and Knock-Off and often carry Taunt. Against Poison Heal generally, the best course of action is to use Goodra, Dondozo, and Arceus as midgrounds to bring in Toxic Orb Blissey to win the 1 v 1 vs the Poison Heal Pokemon.

Eternatus / Miriadon:

Eternatus and Miriadon carry powerful abilities like Hadron Engine and Dragons Maw and strong moves like Dragon Energy. Against such threats generally Teraing Arceus or Goodra into a Fairy type as soon as possible will be necessary.

Protective Pads Population Bomb :

While Population Bomb is normally dealt with via Rocky Helmet, variants with Protective Pads and Coil can 2HKO even Dondonzo. Against Pixilate Protective Pad Population Bomb generally, a Tera into a Fire Type Dondonzo will be necessary to win consistently.

Edit: Epilogue / Additional Notes:

While the meta has significantly shifted since the bans to Contrary and Calyrex, Stall is still by far one of the most consistent playstyles. However, the inevitable shifts in the meta create changes in what moves and set-ups are optimal for a stall team. As such, I've created an updated Importable with the changes to better optimize Stall for the current metagame; should you choose to use the team yourself:

The most major changes to the more modernized Importable are the replacement of Choice Scarf Chansey with Spooky Plate Chansey, the swapping of Giratina's Stealth Rocks to Spikes, and Arceus's Encore to Destiny Bond. Since the meta is much slower nowadays, certain properties such as the revenge-killing capabilities of Chansey, the locking effect of Encore, and the consistency of Stealth Rock, are generally less relevant and so those options have been replaced with more useful ones for the current metagame.
