The voting phase is over! The winner of Cycle 3 is Super Fang by KabilaPok. Congratulations! Your submission will be added to the Hall of Fame soon. Alright, let's move on to the next Cycle!

Cycle Four - Hatterene
:ss/hatterene:

Thanks to its great Special Attack, respectable bulk and amazing ability in Magic Bounce, Hatterene has seen a decent amount of usage as a special wallbreaker. It is most commonly seen running three attacks and a fourth move of choice, with Trick Room doing well against offensive teams and Calm Mind allowing it to break bulkier ones. However, its movepool has some other interesting moves and utility options it can pull off. Let's see what you've got!

Banned Sets
:leftovers: | :life_orb:

The deadline is Sunday 16th of February. Good luck!
As you may have noticed we have only covered Pokemon introduced in Sword & Shield so far. This is intentional, partly because we figured the changes introduced by Pokemon Home could significantly alter the standard sets of Pokemon introduced prior to this generation and subsequently their next best ones. Because the movepools of Pokemon introduced in Sword & Shield have not seen any changes we will continue to cover them for a little longer until the metagame has stabilized a bit. Thank you for your understanding.

Hatterene (F) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 200 HP / 252 SpA / 56 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dazzling Gleam / Draining Kiss
- Psychic
- Mystical Fire
- Nuzzle / Giga Drain

A set I've run a bit following the Dynamax ban (RIP G-Max Smite), Assault Vest adds onto its respectable 103 SpD, allowing it to mildly check some of the Ghost spam in the tier, since Dragapult/Gengar/Aegislash are likely to stay in vs it. Can live a Specs Shadow Ball from Dragapult and KO it back with Dazzling Gleam. Can take a Shadow Ball/Flash Cannon from non-Specs Aegislash and KO it back with Mystical Fire, and can take a non-Specs Shadow Ball/Sludge Wave from Gengar and KO back with Psychic. Otherwise just a good special wall that can take a fair number of hits, while not being passive since it can hit hard back.

Enough speed EVs to outspeed Toxapex and 2HKO it with Psychic, as well as 2HKO-ing Ferrothorn with Mystical Fire. Nuzzle can cripple opposing mons that would normally want to switch in like Aegislash, SpD Corviknight, Cinderace, etc., while Giga Drain is useful for the ever present Seismitoad and not as common Rotom-W.

252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Shadow Ball vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Hatterene: 212-252 (69.5 - 82.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Hatterene Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Dragapult: 374-444 (117.9 - 140%) -- guaranteed OHKO

This set leverages Hatterene's pretty decent stat spread to cause it to check the things that would normally check it, such as Aegislash or Hydreigon. Hatterene's most glaring weakness has always been that it's just slow, and thus it's always going to eat a hit before it gets the change to get its offense running. This set won't fix that, (Trick Room is the best bandage we have,) but it will enable Hatt to eat that hit consistently, and swing back with hits that still really sting without investment. This set is best used to leverage Magic Bounce, swapping in on the opponent's Seismitoad/Ferrothorn trying to set Rocks, or their Mandibuzz/Toxapex looking to spread status, nullifying if not flat out reversing their momentum, and forcing a swap, because none of them can soak even uninvested Hatterene. Whatever check they swap in will be stymied by how bulky this set is, able to eat hits like Banded Adamant Weavile's Throat Chop (and OHKO it in return). The set isn't infallible (if Hatt is statused, by Toxic Spikes for example, Drag can threaten the OHKO with Hex, for example) but it can soak a surprisingly large amount of hits(calcs below) and still threaten back a huge chunk of damage to its checks. With some cleric support, this set can come in again and again to force swaps and whittle your opponent down
Choose between Psychic and Psyshock based on who you want to dent (I recommend Psychic because it mauls Pex, but if your team is walled by Blissey for example Psyshock can fill that gap), and Charm/Dazzling Gleam based on how scared of dragons, especially Hydreigon, your team is. If your team is built in a way such that you should never have to face a dragon that threatens OHKO or 2HKO (Drei, Dragapult, Dracovish) then you can probably forgo it in exchange for safety against strong neutral hits such as Rhyperior's Stone Edge. Dazzling Gleam also helps to turn the Mandibuzz matchup in your favor. Giga Drain is helpful to mitigate some of the chip damage that Hatt will take as it pivots in and out, though it is also invaluable for threatening the OHKO on Seismitoad. Mystical Fire is useful coverage to prevent this set from being fodder for steel types like Ferrothorn and Aegislash.

0 SpA Hatterene Mystical Fire vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Blade: 466-550 (279 - 329.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Hatterene (F) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 200 HP / 252 SpA / 56 Spe
Modest Nature
- Psychic
- Draining Kiss
- Mystical Fire
- Nuzzle / Healing Wish

Hatterene stands out as a strong special attacker with a great special attacking stat of 136, so why not putting a Choice Specs on it to make it break instantly without having to worry about Calm Mind boost first.
Choice Specs-Set gives it the oppurtunity to break instantly through threats and with a lot of dragon types in the current metagame it hits them like a truck with Draining Kiss, which also acts like a utility option to get some health back.
Mystical Fire is for steel-tzypes like Ferrothorn, Corviknight and Aegislash to hit them super effectively.
Psychic is its psychic move option and Nuzzle is helpful to cripple threats down, alternatively you can run healing Wish to give another pkmn of your team a second life.

Double Drain Hatterene

:Hatterene:

Hatterene @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 248 HP / 204 Def / 56 Spe
Bold Nature
-Psychic
-Draining Kiss
-Giga Drain
-Mystical Fire

Basically a bulky set that attempts to shut down some of the more common hazard setters while keeping itself healthy by giving the big succ. Psychic smacks the usual targets, Draining Kiss is spammed whenever possible, Giga Drain beats Seismitoad and other bulky waters/grounds looking to get rocks up, and Mystical Fire beats Ferrothorn and other steels.

The EV spread is standard. Leftovers gives Hatterene the most reliable recovery option available, but if you’re real you run Big Root for extra succ recovery.

This set should be used primarily to switch into passive hazard setters. From there it can use its wide coverage and naturally high special attack to pressure the opponent’s team.

Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power
- Dazzling Gleam
- Mystical Fire

Standard Calm Mind + Stored Power set. Sets up, then sweeps. Slowly.

Hopefully people can come up with some more creative stuff but Hatt's movepool is a lil limited :/

Hatterene (F) @ Eject Button
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Bold Nature
- Future Sight
- Healing Wish
- Nuzzle
- Aromatherapy

This was the best idea I could come up with, the idea is to come in on every hazard setter not named Excadrill and just do utility stuff. Healing Wish to stop people who figure it out from setting up on you.

Reserving RestTalk

Hatterene (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock/Dazzling Gleam

RestTalk Hat takes advantage of Hat’s decent natural defenses to setup and sweep teams. It is regrettable that it doesn’t have a higher hp stat, but this set can still put in solid work.

It cannot be taunted, statused or otherwise stopped by anything short of a killing blow. It acts a bit like Reuniclus but with the addition of fairy typing.

With all the ghost types running around, this mon needs significant support in dealing with said threats. If pursuit still existed then Tyranitar paired with this mon would be insane.

Why not just run cm/sub/draining kiss/psyshock or mystical fire..seems no real use for rest hat.

Aromatheraphy support Hatterene

Hatterene @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spe
Bold Nature
- Psychic
- Dazzling Gleam
- Mystical Fire
- Aromatherapy

General idea

Here we have the combination of a Magic Bounce monster with Aromatheraphy, a rare move which allows us to cure our party from status conditions (including those self-inflicted such as sleep with Rest) with only one turn of set-up. Sometimes Hatterene is forced to switch-out even after one Calm Mind, so you lose the boost thus wasting the turn of set-up; with Aromatheraphy this problem is not existant.
Magic Bounce means that Taunt is NOT a way to stop Hatterene, so the opponent has to OHKO it.
The three other moves are Psychic + Mystical Fire for both utility and coverage. Dazzling Gleam is picked over Drain Kiss for the lack of CM and for the extra base power that allows this if necessary:
0 SpA Hatterene Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Dragapult: 284-336 (89.5 - 105.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock (thanks to Magic Bounce)

EVs (spread) and item
This set is a variation of the standard Calm Mind one and the Spe investment allow us to have a good degree of unpredictability because the opponent may think this Hatterene is a CM one.
Keep in mind that Specs Dragapult with Shadow Ball OHKOes our beloved candle:
252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hatterene: 320-378 (100.6 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
