Hello again guys, here we are!!! The post-DLC OU metagame has settled down enough to the point most Pokemon have already established their most common sets. This means that our project can finally start working again! And for the first Cycle after DLC we have...

Cycle Twenty Three - Magearna
:ss/magearna-original:

Yes, our beloved gear that is even considered broken by some people! Magearna boasts very well-rounded stats, amazing typing, and really huge movepool which has got even wider this generation. Of course, Magearna performs a multitude of roles greatly and thus does have a number of common and viable sets. But hey, we all know the true amount of Magearna's cool sets goes waay beyond that! Just as usual, guys, y'all are to prove this here!

due to the metagame trending towards fast pokémon like excadrill paired with hippowdon, dragapult as well as rain-squads i thought about a nice
option for magearna here, which is trick room. trick room helps magearna to act like a surprise counter to those fast threats.
fleur cannon is its usual stab same with flash cannon as fairy / steel is a nice dual-stab combination. the last slot is changeable depending on what your team needs; focus blast hits excadrill whereas thunderbolt still hits toxapex for a decent amount of damage. thunderbolt can also hit the popular choices on rain-teams like barraskewda, azumarill and pelipper.

While Magearna might seem outclassed by Grimmsnarl as a Screens setter due to the lack of the ability Prankster, its good bulk and decent typing make it a niche pick as a support Pokemon. This set revolves around setting both Reflect and Light Screen for the team, while Light Clay is able to aid those screens by making them last for longer turns. A physically defensive set is given to prevent OHKOes from Cinderace and Excadrill before setting up. The third moveslot can be optimized in different ways. Encore is able to catch setup sweepers off-guard and force other Pokemon into using specific moves. Fleur Cannon is able to force 2HKOes on Hippowdon, Zeraora, and Alakazam, as well as OHKOes on Kommo-o, Dragapult, and Hydreigon and is a nuke thanks to being a powerful STAB. Volt Switch allows Magearna to pivot out into its teammates, instead of being forced to switch out and it also gains momentum easily. Fleur Cannon is able to force 2HKOes on Hippowdon, Zeraora, and Alakazam, as well as OHKOes on Kommo-o, Dragapult, and Hydreigon and is a nuke thanks to being a powerful STAB.

Magearna @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 72 Def / 36 SpD / 152 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Trick
- Pain Split / Focus Blast
- Volt Switch
- Fleur Cannon

This set uses Magearna's steel type and access to trick in an attempt to cripple common switchins. While things like Chansey can be anxious to switch in originally, after showing you're not choiced, people will often see trick as a non option, allowing you to cripple it for the rest of the game. Stuff like Rotom-H, Chansey, Alolawak, and Volcarona also don't like having their item replaced with a tox orb. The given EVs let you live two jolly Urshifu Wicked Blows after spikes and outspeed things creeping around 200 with the rest dumped into spdef. Volt lets you pivot out on stuff like Amoonguss, Pex, and opposing Mag. Pain split gives more longevity and a form of recovery, while Focus Blast lets you hit things like Excadrill that could otherwise pivot in.

Substitute + Calm Mind Magearna

:ss/Magearna:
Apparently it gets Sub now?

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Def / 92 SpD / 140 Spe
Bold Nature
-Substitute
-Calm Mind
-Draining Kiss
-Stored Power

This set takes advantage of Magearna's excellent bulk and typing as well as its tendency to force switches to set up safely behind Substitute. Its job is to be an annoying wincon, basically, by setting up on passive mons. The HP and defense enable its sub to always tank a max defense Ferrothorn's Body Press, leaving it as setup fodder as Magearna gets HP back between lefties recovery and Draining Kiss. Likewise, 140 speed EVs are sufficient to hit 201 speed, which creeps 200 Mandibuzz (which in turn outruns max speed jolly Azumarill). The rest goes into special defense for longevity. Draining Kiss is a reliable STAB that heals off HP lost from sub, while Stored Power has good neutral coverage and makes Magearna deadly after a few boosts.

Other move options include any combination of: Draining Kiss, Stored Power, Aura Sphere, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Dazzling Gleam, Flash Cannon... fucking Charge Beam even? Its coverage is absurd. Sub / Charge Beam / Draining Kiss / Aura Sphere sounds kinda heat ngl. The Draining Kiss + Stored Power combo, in particular, has excellent synergy with Rillaboom + Magnezone. They help Magearna come in against passive targets through Volt Turn and weaken its Steel-type checks. Also this thing is dumb with grassy terrain up. Free core included!

Physically Defensive Pivot

:magearna:
Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Volt Switch
- Ice Beam
- Dazzling Gleam
- Focus Blast / Flash Cannon / Heal Bell

This set takes advantage of Magearna's fantastic defensive typing to switch in and pivot on a large portion of the physical metagame. It's place is therefore primarily linked to playstyles which can take advantage of this, namely balance. It does lack the punch that many other Mage sets will have. The trade-off for this are the switches that this Pokémon provides on the pivot. With the amount of viable breakers we have in the tier, this is a crucial role to play. Initially I considered a mixed defensive set, but then realized how many strong physical threats there are in the tier that this mon could help deal with. This thing is still relatively bulky on the special side anyway, even with minimal investment.

Volt Switch and Ice Beam combined provide boltbeam coverage, while also allowing Mage to pivot on predicted switches or walled Pokémon. Dazzling Gleam is necessary to give Mage an option against the monster that is Urshifu. The last slot is personal preference. I prefer Focus Blast to allow me to hit defensive steels not named Corviknight (which is hit by Tbolt). Flash Cannon rounds out Mage's STAB combo to mix in with boltbeam, allowing you to hit fairies and most pokemon for at least neutral damage. Heal Bell is an interesting option which allows Mage to act as a last resort cleric if you are playing on stallier balance. That being said I don't generally recommend Heal Bell as the other options provide you more agency in a match.

The given IVs allow Mage to underpace many slower mons, which means you have the slowest Volt Switch possible while still outspeeding Hippo. The mons this underpaces include Tangrowth, Corviknight and Chansey. Meaning you can pivot without your chosen breaker getting statused or otherwise chipped.

This set pairs nicely with Wish Chansey, which allows it much needed recovery and a specially defensive counterpart. It also pairs nicely with Toxapex to better deal with Urshifu. You do need something to deal with Marowak-A, it is the one physical breaker that can OHKO this mon. Rotom-Heat is also a threat to this mon.

Here are some calcs to show what this thing can take if it needs to.

Mixed Sweeper

:ss/Magearna:
Magearna @ Life Orb
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 44 Atk / 252 SpA / 212 Spe
Rash Nature / Mild
- Shift Gear
- Zen Headbutt / Iron Head
- Dazzling Gleam
- Thunderbolt / Aura Sphere

This set is used for late game clean sweep.
Taking advantage of free turn for setup +2 speed and +1 attack, it acts like a mixed sweeper that gets the usual special atk boost every time it kills something.
It is used for lure some common counters, as Venusaur, Amoongus and even Toxapex if you are not running Thunderbolt.

It is not used for ohko walls but does a decent job paired with life orb.
Iron head is preferable over zen headbutt if you want to kill specially defensive clefable or other fairy threats. Flash canon can fit here too If you don't like the Idea of a mixed Magearna.
Dazzling gleam is it main stab and doesn't get the nuke of Fleuer cannon.
Thunderbolt for hit Toxapex, Corviknight and neutral hits in things like Volcarona, Cinderance and even others non-AV Magearna.
It's very usefull run Aura Sphere or Focus Miss to hit things like Exca , Ferrothorn, Magnezone and other steel threats.

Finally, it doesn't do much damage in things like Rotom-H , Chansey and Aegislash... But overall it is very cool to use this and sweeps everything after some boosts.

Calm Mind + Iron Defense

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 204 HP / 172 Def / 56 SpA / 72 SpD / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Iron Defense
- Stored Power
- Draining Kiss
Magearna should be suspect tested, it can do everything and more, it's bulky enough to live hits from all kinds of powerful ass mons.
252+ SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 204 HP / 72 SpD Magearna: 276-326 (78.4 - 92.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Cinderace Pyro Ball vs. +2 204 HP / 172 Def Magearna: 138-164 (39.2 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

The EVs allow Magearna to hit 352 HP which is a Leftovers magic number, to generate as much lefties each turn.
The EVs on defense and SpD are spread to tank both one modest Flamethrower from Volcarona and Pyro Ball from Cinderace after Stealth Rock damage.

The idea is similar to Double Dance Reuniclus and Slowbro just that you cannot hit it with Toxic (laughs in Salazzle), It finds it's way to break through fat teams without worrying too much about getting poisoned, well it may fear Haze Toxapex but well you're not completely hopeless vs it.
+1 56+ SpA Magearna Stored Power (60 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 138-164 (45.3 - 53.9%) -- 92.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
But it's best to have partners that can trap and remove Pex for Magearna, since most pex should be able to beat Magearna 1v1.
(unless you want to PP stall the haze / recovers with the 32 + 24 combined from both CM + Iron Defense combined with Stored Power)

P.S: BAN STORED POWER AND UNBAN BATON PASS

Electroweb support Magearna

Magearna @ Life Orb
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 HP/180 SpA/76 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Electroweb
- Energy Ball
- Fleur Cannon
- Volt Switch

Spe control is the most important part of the game and that's why Electroweb is here. Keep in mind that this move is really unexpected.
One bad thing of this move (other than its low base power) is the fact that there are many Ground-type pokemons that can enter to stop our Electric support moves....but that's why Energy Ball is here, which is useful towards Water types not neutral to Grass.
For example:
180+ SpA Life Orb Magearna Energy Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 442-520 (103.7 - 122%) -- guaranteed OHKO
180+ SpA Life Orb Magearna Energy Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Seismitoad: 463-546 (111.8 - 131.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
180+ SpA Life Orb Magearna Energy Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Solid Rock Rhyperior: 413-487 (95.1 - 112.2%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
180+ SpA Life Orb Magearna Energy Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Azumarill: 322-380 (94.1 - 111.1%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO (Fleur Cannon is a clean OHKO, but it drops your SpA)
180+ SpA Life Orb Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-Wash: 273-321 (90 - 105.9%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO
180+ SpA Life Orb Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 378-446 (90 - 106.1%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO

Fleur Cannon is here to have a Fairy nuke to spam when necessary and Volt Switch pairs very well with Spe control in the form of Electroweb.
With this EVs spread and nature, this Magearna is able to outspeed 0 EVs Spe neutral Seismitoad by one point, thus taking it out of the picture.
With a connected Electroweb, this Magearna is faster than a Timid 252+ Spe Toxtricity, so you can Volt Switch out or simply attacking without taking unnecessary damage.
  • Unlikely the Shift Gear/Agility sets, this one has the advantage to soft check some more threats thanks to the added bulk and the Spe drop, which supports your teammates even afer fainting (until the opponent switches out).
  • Unlikely Thunder Wave, Electroweb is Taunt-proof and 95% accuracy means that you will miss once every twenty times and not once every ten.
With Shift Gear/Agility you outspeed many threats, but you have to stomach one hit from your opponent with a lot less HP Evs, thus leaving you prone to be revenge killed by priority moves more easily.

A Modest nature with 252 HP/180 SpA/76 Spe allows Magearna to reach 185 Spe points but hits 375 SpA instead of 357. Credits to Metallic for the suggestions, thanks!

Thunder Wave Pivot

Magearna @ Pixie Plate / Occa Berry
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 232 HP / 252 SpA / 24 Spe
Modest Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Fleur Cannon
- Focus Blast / Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch

This set is an offensive pivot, who bluffs a Choiced set with Fleur Cannon spam, only to hit switch-ins with a Thunder Wave to cripple them for the rest of the game. The main targets we want to hit are Cinderace and Volcarona (hence the Occa Berry slash), who are some of the most common Pokemons that like to switch in on a -1/-2 Magearna that is "locked into Fleur Cannon". Ever since the release of HDB, I've not seen anyone run a Lum Berry on any Volcarona set (or any Pokemon for that matter) unlike in previous generations. And users of Heal Bell are basically limited to (semi)-stall teams, which makes paralysis basically unremovable for most teams. With Wish support from Clef, Magearna's excellent bulk ets it paralyse faster threats, while denting slower walls for something like your own Volcarona to ploy through. Even defensive Pokemon like Ferrothorn and Toxapex don't appreciate being paralysed, since a untimely paralysis can basically spell their end. Despite Occa Berry being a really good option, I still have Pixie Plate as the primary slash because that 20% boost to Fleur Cannon really makes a big difference in many cases.

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 72 Def / 188 SpD
Sassy Nature
-Eerie Impulse
-Pain Split
-Fleur Cannon
-Volt Switch

This set allows Magearna to function as essentially the ultimate check to opposing setup Magearna. With Eerie Impulse, opposing setup Magearna are neutered with special attack drops. Magearna can then Pain Split to heal any damage taken and Volt Switch out into an offensive threat. This set also is a fantastic check to a myriad of special attackers running around in the tier. It usually is not 2HKOd by LO Hydreigon flamethrower, so even on an incorrect prediction it can threaten out or even OHKO the Hydreigon with Fleur Cannon. Even burned, it is not 2HKOd by Spell Tag Dragapult Hex, and can OHKO with Fleur Cannon. While it is usually 2HKOd by +2 Alakazam Focus Blast, it can Eerie Impulse the Zam, and Pain Split off some of the damage. Moreover, hitting 2 Focus Blasts is literally a coinflip, so the chance to 2HKO factoring in accuracy is closer to 45%. It makes a great partner with Urshifu, because it has a slow Volt Switch that can allow Urshifu to get in safely. It also threatens many of the dark resists that can give Urshifu trouble. It threatens Mandibuzz out with Fleur Cannon, OHKOs Kommo-o with Fleur Cannon, and can Volt Switch on incoming checks into a partner. It also has utility against Azumarill. +6 Adamant Huge Power Azumarill Play Rough does not OHKO Magearna after rocks, so it can revenge kill a weakened Azumarill in a pinch.
