Voting is now over! Since there is an equal amount of votes between Flame Orb Fling and Choice Scarf, we have broken the tie and the resulting winner of Cycle 17 is Choice Scarf by Steel With It. Congratulations! Your submission will be added to the Hall of Fame soon. And with that, let's move on to the next Cycle!

Cycle Eighteen - Obstagoon
:ss/obstagoon:

Throughout the generation, Obstagoon has been quite the solid wallbreaker and it has gained some more traction recently. One of its greatest attributes is its ability in Guts, which amplifies its power and allows it absorb status while not fearing Hex thanks to its Normal-typing, not to mention its great natural bulk. It has access to two fantastic STAB moves in Knock Off and Facade, as well as good coverage in Close Combat. It has other useful moves in Obstruct allowing it to activate Flame Orb safely while potentially lowering the foe's Defense, Bulk Up to make it even more threatening, and Switcheroo to cripple the foe by giving it Flame Orb while potentially receiving something useful in return. However, these are not the only moves in its arsenal and Guts isn't its only ability either. Let's see what you can come up with!

Banned Sets
:flame orb:

The deadline is Tuesday 12th of May. Good luck!

Whirlpool Trapper

Obstagoon @ Binding Band
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 192 Def / 64 Spe
Impish Nature
- Knock Off
- Whirlpool
- Taunt
- Obstruct

This set is designed to trap pex and hippo (just about), while not being completely useless against everything else. Whirlpool and taunt are obvious, with binding band increasing whirlpool's trapping damage so you can actually kill the things you're trapping. Knock allows you to remove lefties/black sludge, while also making sure you aren't complete clefable bait (run this w specs kyu or something else that wins when clefs knocked), while also allowing you to claim hdb off mandi (as well as rotom h if they leave that in for some reason). Finally, obstruct allows you to get chip on incoming corv (also mandi to a lesser extent), since when you use whirl they can uturn out, usually preventing the trap. However this set can abuse that uturn to get the corv on -2 def and follow up with a knock off (0 Atk Obstagoon Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. -2 252 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 135-159 (33.7 - 39.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO), which along with the bit of whirlpool chip and rocks if you have them up leaving it on around half. Guts is obviously the best ability here as you're taking pex scalds/baneful. EVs creep nascar mandibuzz with the rest in physical bulk because when I tested this V myself with a faster version it lost to hippo. Here's a replay simulating how it traps pex and hippo should they switch into it:

Taunt + 3 Attacks

Obstagoon @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
-Taunt
-Knock Off
-Facade
-Close Combat

Taunt Obstagoon is a good set for wearing down fat mons rather than trying to punch through them immediately. Basically it clicks Knock Off any time a fat mon comes in, then Taunt as it tries to recover. Or if it’s a Ferrothorn then CC after Knock to kill it. The set works especially well with hazard stacking, ensuring that Corv can't Defog and that Pex and Hippo stay low.

Iron Defense + Body Press
Obstagoon @ Leftovers
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 196 HP / 252 Def / 60 Spe
Impish Nature
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Obstruct
- Knock Off

This set's main niche is being able to 1v1 Conkeldurr AND Dracovish (as long as you have +2 defense), as well as many other physical attackers.
Obstruct greatly helps with beating most physical wallbreakers, since most of them use contact moves, giving them -2 defense against you.
Sadly, this set can't touch any of those pesky, so having Knock Off helps cripple them.

Defiant as the ability since the other two aren't helpful. Maybe you get +2 from defog and have a guaranteed knock kill on dragapult (unboosted knock does 76.3 - 90.8% to dragapult)

Speed Investment to outspeed Adamant/Modest Aegislash, as well as Adamant Bisharp.

252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Mach Punch vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 168-196 (44.6 - 52.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Drain Punch vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 304-364 (80.8 - 96.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 Atk Cloyster Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 125-150 (33.2 - 39.8%) -- approx. 4.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Earthquake vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 120-142 (31.9 - 37.7%) -- 0.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Zeraora Close Combat vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 224-265 (59.5 - 70.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Hawlucha Close Combat vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 244-292 (64.8 - 77.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Cinderace High Jump Kick vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 188-224 (50 - 59.5%) -- 78.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+4 252+ Atk Bisharp Iron Head vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 150-177 (39.8 - 47%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Choice Band Strong Jaw Dracovish Fishious Rend (170 BP) vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon in Rain: 286-337 (76 - 89.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Aegislash-Blade Close Combat vs. +2 196 HP / 252+ Def Obstagoon: 220-260 (58.5 - 69.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252+ Def Obstagoon Body Press vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Cloyster: 192-228 (79.6 - 94.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Def Obstagoon Body Press vs. -2 0 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 335-395 (95.4 - 112.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after burn damage

+2 252+ Def Obstagoon Body Press vs. -2 4 HP / 0 Def Dracovish: 322-379 (100 - 117.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 252+ Def Obstagoon Body Press vs. -2 0 HP / 0- Def Zeraora: 456-537 (143.8 - 169.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 252+ Def Obstagoon Body Press vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Bisharp: 640-756 (236.1 - 278.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 252+ Def Obstagoon Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Cinderace: 204-241 (67.7 - 80%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Def Obstagoon Body Press vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Excadrill: 484-570 (134 - 157.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

tl;dr: obstagoon destroys HO

Obstagoon @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Facade
- Knock Off
- Taunt
- Bulk Up

Kinda overlaps with JTD but Obstagoon's movepool is really not very conducive to a project like this, mostly because Facade out-damages the vast majority of the otherwise-potentially-not-terrible coverage options that aren't called Close Combat and as such invalidates any attempt to use Obsta as a "lure" or whatever else past the scope of what's already listed.

This set, however, is sorta decent at what it does. Taunt is actually pretty useful for this sorta set as it stops Hippowdon using Whirlwind, allowing you to just brute-force past it when you otherwise wouldn't be able to do so consistently—esp if it has a cleric in the back. You can also stop Ferrothorn clicking Leech Seed if you catch it on switch-in, and if it doesn't carry Body Press this lets you just use it as free setup fodder. It also means Toxapex can't do its thing of switching in and alternating between Baneful Bunker and Recover. KOff+Facade hits every relevant Pokemon in the game for neutral damage (unless you consider Tyranitar to be a relevant for whatever reason) and Jolly is preferred to speed tie Kyurem+you don't need Adamant's added power to net a roll on Helmet Hippo when you can just boost on it.

Obstagoon @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Facade
- Knock Off
- Taunt / Thunder Wave
- Parting Shot

Nothing too special here; Parting Shot is most likely more useful against bulky Pokemon that don't have as much power as normal attackers do, allowing its teammates to come in and not mind the bulky Pokemon's attacks as much as would if Parting Shot didn't lower its power. Taunt's always pretty useful on pivots, forcing certain Pokemon out and pivot out with Parting Shot when they come in, especially strong attackers. Flame Orb + Guts is pretty meh on this set, but it'll be too obvious not to run it. I guess Defiant can be useful? Whatever, at least it can have fun with Clefable as a pivot buddy, appreciating that Wish support.

Defiant Scarf Obstagoon

Obstagoon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Close Combat
- Fire Punch
- Switcheroo / Body Slam

Sorry for the delay. Scard Defiant Obstagoon takes advantage of its great speed tier to outspeed all of the unboosted metagame. Defiant is utilised to take advantage of predicted Defogs, random stat dropping moves (e.g. Liquidation or Fire Lash) and the rising trend of sticky web. Even affected by sticky web, this mon still maintains a solid 317 speed stat due to scarf.

Knock Off provides great utility, and acts as a solid STAB move of choice at +2. KO-ing most offensive threats that stay in not expecting a scarf (especially Zeraora). Close Combat acts as solid general coverage. Fire Punch is for both Ferro and Corviknight. At +2 it is an OHKO on Ferro and a 2HKO on Corviknight. Switcheroo is what I have been using, akin to Rotom with Trick and even Flame Orb Goon with Trick, you cripple defensive answers on the switch. Body Slam is another option for a STAB move to spread paralysis.

This thing hits surprisingly hard, and has a solid matchup into HO. It can also cripple Balance if given the chance.

Obstagoon @ Leftovers
Ability: Reckless
EVs: 48 HP / 252 Atk / 208 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Double-Edge
- Knock Off / Taunt / Stomping Tantrum / Throat Chop
- Obstruct
- Substitute

With its double typing, Obstagoon can bait and punish physical attackers with Substitute + Obstruct !
Obstruct lowering the defense of an opponent after the usage of a contact move makes Obstagoon more confident to guarantee a kill !
For exemple: Substitute on the switch of a Pokemon Obstagoon can't kill immediately, Obstruct on the opponent physical move, Punish with double Edge or Knock off after the defense was lowered.

I choose Reckless as the main ability because of the power output of Double-Edge as it is also Obstagoon's Stab move.

The second slot can be anything you need. Knock Off for its utility, Taunt to bypass walls more easily, Stomping Tantrum is mainly for Toxapex as the double usage of Substitute/Obstruct makes the move work every time, Throat Chop prevent Sylveon to use Hyper Voice.

The repartition is to outpseed Excadrill and Timid 204 Evs Substitute Kyurem. I didn't found other utility for the rest but I put 48 Evs in Hp for less Double-Edge recoil on Toxapex. It can be changed to a more offensive oriented set with the Adamant nature.

I find it useful to bait priority moves like Conkeldurr's Mach Punch or slow Pivots using U-Turn

Keep in mind that you can still force a 50/50 between the stay or the switch of the opponent when using the combo.

Some Calcs (Under Sub and after an successful Obstruct contact)
252 Atk Reckless Obstagoon Double-Edge vs. -2 0 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 382-450 (108.8 - 128.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Obstagoon Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. -2 252 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 172-204 (43 - 51%) A good chunk

252 Atk Obstagoon Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. -2 252 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 147-174 (41.7 - 49.4%) Also a good chunk

252 Atk Reckless Obstagoon Double-Edge vs. -2 252 HP / 200+ Def Kommo-o: 235-277 (66.3 - 78.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Reckless Obstagoon Double-Edge vs. -2 252 HP / 0 Def Mandibuzz: 351-414 (82.7 - 97.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Reckless Obstagoon Double-Edge vs. -2 252 HP / 252+ Def Seismitoad: 318-375 (76.8 - 90.5%) Can happen

Other calcs (Double-Edge)
252 Atk Reckless Obstagoon Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 237-279 (60.1 - 70.8%)

252 Atk Reckless Obstagoon Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Rotom-Heat: 172-204 (56.7 - 67.3%)

Had fun finding this Apologies for errors

Razor Claw Obstagoon (a.k.a Critical AoA Obstagoon)

Obstagoon @ Razor Claw/Scope Lens
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Cross Poison
- Cross Chop
- Night Slash
- Facade

General idea
Here we have another set based on math: 50% chance to crit is nothing to laugh at because it is a coinflip that ignores the attacker's negative stat stages, the defender's positive stat stages, and the defensive boosts from Screens are always ignored. Burn is still a thing, though. Also, a critical hit gives an unexpected power boost to our hit that ruins the plans of our opponent, thus forcing him to switch-out his pokèmon.
For this set I chose Cross Poison + Cross Chop as coverage moves. Cross Poison is very useful towards many Fairy-type pokèmons, whereas Cross Chop is a filler. Keep in mind that with 80% accuracy this move is as risky as Stone Edge; the chance to land Cross Chop AND deal a critical hit is 40%.
Night Slash is the STAB-move with perfect sinergy with our strategy.
Facade is here as Normal-type STAB with no recoil and with the added bonus when Obstagoon is statused. Here, this moves has an extra slim chance -but not so small to be negligible- to crit. It is our move when we are burned and we don't have Heal Bell users anymore.

Reasons to play this instead of Guts+Flame Orb:
* Less predictable (Razor Claw isn't common as item);
* No health chipped away every turn while every stat drop becomes a +2 or a +1 Atk;
* No defensive drop from Close Combat that ruins our good defenses;
* Resilience to Intimidate users, King's Shield and similar moves; also, we have ways to circumvent Screens.

EVs (spread) and item
The EVs spread is a simple 252 Atk/4 whatever you want/252 Spe with an Adamant nature in order to wallbreak better with an extra 5% damage.
Razor Claw boosts critical hit ratio of the holder by one stage, so this happens:
* Cross Chop+Night Slash+Cross Poison now have 50% chance to land a crit;
* Facade has now the 12,5% chance to crit (=1/8), which isn't that low if you consider that this is a STABbed move.

Calcs with Adamant nature those that are relevant:
252 Atk Obstagoon Cross Poison vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable on a critical hit: 230-272 (58.3 - 69%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Obstagoon Cross Poison vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Primarina on a critical hit: 230-272 (63.3 - 74.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Obstagoon Cross Poison vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Rotom-Mow on a critical hit: 170-200 (55.9 - 65.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Obstagoon Cross Poison vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Sylveon on a critical hit: 276-326 (70 - 82.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Obstagoon Cross Poison vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Ludicolo on a critical hit: 260-308 (86.3 - 102.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Obstagoon Cross Chop vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine on a critical hit: 336-396 (93 - 109.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 Atk Obstagoon Cross Chop vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Snorlax on a critical hit: 540-636 (103 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Obstagoon Cross Chop vs. 252 HP / 52 Def Incineroar on a critical hit: 394-464 (100 - 117.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Team(mates) support
This Ostagoon can't really OHKO from full hp, especially if you are running a Jolly nature, so chip damage from hazards is always a good thing to have.
Heal Bell/Aromatheraphy support is a good thing to have to cure Obstagoon's burn/paralysis.

Defiant Stat Changer
Obstagoon @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Obstruct
- Parting Shot
- Close Combat
"All of the power belongs to me!"
The goal of this set is to use Defiant and Weakness Policy to change stats as quickly as possible. This also goes for Obstruct and Parting Shot.
Why use Gunk and Close Combat?
Gunk Shot is used to 2HKO most threats like Clefable and Togekiss. Once weakness Policy is up, this does a lot of damage.
252 Atk Obstagoon Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Clefable: 262-310 (66.4 - 78.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Obstagoon Gunk Shot vs. 92 HP / 0 Def Grimmsnarl: 290-342 (81.9 - 96.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Obstagoon Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Hatterene: 214-252 (67.2 - 79.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Obstagoon Gunk Shot vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Togekiss: 214-252 (68.8 - 81%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Close Combat deals as a threat to Bisharp, Cloyster, Excadrill, Ferrothorn, Hydreigon, Kyurem, Terrakion, and Tyranitar. You can use this move to stop the other Hazard Setters as quickly as possible.
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Bisharp: 408-480 (150.5 - 177.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Cloyster: 122-144 (50.6 - 59.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Excadrill: 306-362 (84.7 - 100.2%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 122-144 (34.6 - 40.9%) -- 55.3% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hydreigon: 224-264 (68.9 - 81.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kyurem: 222-262 (56.7 - 67%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Terrakion: 222-262 (68.7 - 81.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Obstagoon Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 376-444 (110.2 - 130.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
What's up with Obstruct and Parting Shot?
Obstruct is here to protect himself from the Fighting Contact moves like Close Combat. This harshly lowers defense, which gives you a better chance at OHKO-ing or 2HKO-ing most common threats.
Parting Shot is to lower the damage for Close Combat and other moves that harshly harm Obstagoon, regularly OHKO-ing or 2HKO-ing him as necessary.
There we go, my Obstagoon set! This took a while to write.

Life Orb Guts
Obstagoon @ Life Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Facade
- Close Combat
- Thunder Wave

Using a Life Orb boost combined with Guts if you are able to get it smashes common walls, 2HKOing Toxapex, Seismitoad, and Ferrothorn and OHKOing Clefable. After your opponent sees Obstagoon not burn itself at the end, they will probably assume it is Defiant and start trying to status it. Obstagoon's speed tier is pretty good, sitting at 95 base. Basically anything that isn't a dedicated wall is OHKOed. Of course, status and Life Orb recoil mean you will lose HP at an incredibly fast rate, so your opponent can switch around to rack up damage. Pairing it with wish support is a good idea.
