The voting phase is over! By its results, the winner of cycle 40 is Nature's Madness by Chazm. Congratulations! Your submission will be added to the Hall of Fame soon. Now let's move on to the next cycle!

Cycle Forty-One - Nidoking
:ss/nidoking:

Nidoking's ability in Sheer Force in tandem with its great offensive typing and very wide pool of coverage moves make it an extraordinary wallbreaker. It very much enjoys how pivoting moves like U-turn and Teleport, which give Nidoking plenty of safe opportunities to come in, are ubiquitous in the current generation of OU. With some good reads, Nidoking can efficiently pick apart many balance teams. However, it can struggle dealing with special walls like Blissey and Slowking.
Do you have any cool set ideas? Time to show them!

toxic spikes + roar nidoking (phazer)

:bw/nidoking:
Nidoking (M) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

- Toxic Spikes
- Roar
- Sludge Wave
- Earth Power

this set aims to set t-spikes and with roar phazing the pokemon around to get t-spikes damage and to get poisoned. nidoking can set t-spikes on pokemon like clefable as it threatens it out naturally with its strong stab sludge wave. and since clefable is pretty common in the metagame it can do that pretty comfortably. roar is chosen as it phazes every pokemon around without having to fear that it gets roadblocked by doing so. sludge wave + earth power are its two strong dual stab-options, however this nidoking set needs support from strong knock off-users such as ferrothorn, clefable, and landorus-t to remove the ever common heavy-duty boots and this nidoking set lacks in hitting pokemon such as corviknight, so strong electric- and fire-types like heatran, tapu koko, and cinderace are nice pairs with nidoking.

but in overall this set can be annoying with the phazing around into the set t-spikes as it can threaten a lot of pokemon longevity and nidoking in itself is a threat in the metagame.

How about something like Choice Scarf.
Nidoking (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 20 Atk / 252 SpA / 232 Spe
Mild Nature
- Sludge Wave
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power
- Superpower

With the support of other pokemon like teleport slowbro, u-turn lando, etc., Nidoking can safely get in on threats. Its speed + scarf allows it to hit a solid 403 speed stat, outpeeding everything besides timid Dragapault, regieleki and some scarfers. Superpower also it allows it to 1v1 Blissey
Here are some calc on mons that would normally outspeed it and Blissey.
252+ SpA Sheer Force Nidoking Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 480-568 (134.4 - 159.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Sheer Force Nidoking Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tapu Koko: 422-498 (150.1 - 177.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
20 Atk Nidoking Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 324-382 (45.3 - 53.5%) -- 37.1% chance to 2HKO

Not to mention it is a powerful scarfer that has the ability to clean up against weakened teams.
Note: This is my first time posting on this thread, hope I did it right :)

Hone Claws

:ss/Nidoking:
Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hone Claws
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab
- Ice Punch / Fire Punch

Pretty self-explanatory, hone claws Nidoking is a setup mon that takes advantage of its usual counters. Utilising Nidoking's solid attack stat, it is able to punch holes in checks after a bit of setup. This set will always catch opponents off guard, so make use of the surprise factor to get as many safe boosts as you can.

Positive speed nature is pretty necessary on most Nidoking, as otherwise it is outsped by even more stuff than usual. This one is no exception. Adamant provides a real boost to your damage though, so consider it when using this thing.

EQ + PJab is solid coverage to hit a lot of things in the metagame decently. Pjab is about even in power with EQ, so don't feel the need to always click EQ. Choose between Ice Punch to hit Lando / Garchomp and annoying Birds (Zapdos especially) or Fire Punch to really hit Ferrothorn, among other EQ resistant steel types. I prefer Fire Punch, but both are viable on this set.

While most people think of nidoking as a special attacker, it can also work well as a choice band user! With a decent base 102 attack, it’s ready to use sheer force boosted poison jabs and ice punches to full effect. Earthquake is for good stab damage, and throat chop can lure in a slowking/bro.

252+ Atk Choice Band Sheer Force Nidoking Throat Chop vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 214-252 (54.3 - 63.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Nidoking Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 404-476 (134.2 - 158.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Sheer Force Nidoking Ice Punch vs. 248 HP / 220 Def Zapdos: 270-318 (70.4 - 83%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Sheer Force Nidoking Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 200 Def Garchomp: 508-600 (120.9 - 142.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

I got nothing due to how mostly one-dimensional Nidoking is, so I went with this. Suicide rocker Nidoking works similarly to Drill and Lando but with no spin or SD/Explosion. Rocks, Taunt, and EP are self-explanatory. Then we get to the fourth move slot. The choice between Tbolt and Head Smash. Thunderbolt hits defoggers like Corv, Molt, and Mandi hard while Head Smash OHKOs Moltres and hits Zapdos really hard for a mon like Rillaboom or Kartana.

General idea
Do you like playing spectrier? Are you sad beause blissey and hydreigon exist? Boy do I have the set for you! This set uses the power of psychology to lure out all of the above and murder it reliably. The general idea is that once people see your big scary "special attacking breaker nidoking" they will send out blissey or hydreigon as very good special walls to check it. Because you expect this, you whirlpool on the switch. That poor blissey is now trapped, and is about to have the time of it's life. Because other superpower sets try to take blissey out, but this one abuses it in new and fascinating ways! ok, anyways the blissey is trapped, next you taunt it so it can't teleport or heal, set up spikes or rocks and end it with a super power. So not only did you lure blissey, you actually set up hazards on it and then ko'd it. Its a similair story with hydreigon, except since it tends to run earth power, you probably won't be able set up hazards on it unless its very slightly chipped, when you can click hazards as it's coming in and then superpower it. Other spectrier checks and counters that this thing hits are tyranitar and heatran, but those probably wont come out against your nido like hydreigon and blissey. it also packs both hazards and taunt which makes it workable as a regular hazard setter which can stop defog. Use stealth rock, or if you already have it, tspikes. uninvested nidoking has 303 health, which lets it survive 3 stosses from blissey, so you can taunt, get stossed, tspikes, get stossed, tspikes, get stossed, ko it with superpower which leaves you at 3 hp, or dead after LO recoil. Poison point is used for 2 reasons: 1. no moves benefit from sheer force and much more importantly 2. if your opponent brings out a revenge killer after you got weakened from stosses/earth powers just to watch it get poisoned just to take out your low hp nidoking, there is a good chance they will rage quit and/or get an aneurysm.

Basically after this happens, you have hazards up and/or the opponents best answer to spectrier is gone which leaves it in a great position.

some calcs:

252+ Atk Life Orb Nidoking Superpower vs. 164 HP / 0 Def Hydreigon: 346-408 (94.5 - 111.4%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Nidoking Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 575-676 (80.5 - 94.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Nidoking Superpower vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 302-356 (78.2 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Life Orb Nidoking Superpower vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 588-691 (145.5 - 171%) -- guaranteed OHKO

These sets are picked up from the base damage calc site so I guess they are representative of what you will run into on the ladder. Also note that for blissey tran and hydreigon the small amount of damage of residual and straight up damage by whirlpool actually does turn them into OHKOes, which i think is both divine providence and really hilarious. there is a very small chance you wont be able to KO blissey if you get absolute garbage rolls from whirlpool and 1 superpower, but it cant heal so whatevs, just superpower it again.

85% of the time, it works 100% of the time

EVs and item
item, nature and EVs are made specifically to unleash the strongest possible superpower while still being able to switch moves. speed is for more reliably getting rocks up against things that are we are not trapping.

Teammates
This mon should be used on HO teams with spectrier as it's wincon. Other members shouldnt be specially based, so the blissey feels safe to come in since it thinks it will only have to check nidoking and spectrier.

P.S.: you probably dont actually want to name it blissey murderer since it might tip off people what it's used for.

RestTalk Nidoking

Nidoking (M) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Poison Point
EVs: 152 HP / 104 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Scorching Sands
- Flamethrower

Thought I'd go with a more defensive set. I believed making this Nidoking max speed was important, but the SpA EVs to pretty much ensure a 2-shot to max-SpD Ferrothorn after Rocks. Sheer Force has been dropped for the very good burn chance that Scorching Sands offers, which will further enhance Nidoking's ability to hang around. The two attacking move-slots can be swapped around depending on the rest of the team, where Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Sludge Wave are options; if Scorching Sands is dropped then Sheer Force should be the ability of choice.

104 SpA Nidoking Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Ferrothorn: 168-200 (47.7 - 56.8%) -- 90.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Timid Nature

- Sludge Wave
- Taunt
- Super Fang

The goal of this set is simple, to heavy cripple Pokemon. Earth Power and Sludge Wave in my opinion are really the only moves you need on Nidoking and Super Fang and Taunt will be able to cripple Pokemon that either tank both really hard such as Blissey or Pokemon that resist both such as Corviknight, Super Fang is especially dangerous on Pokemon who don't have recovery and I think this set will be insane when it comes to stallbreaking, or just breaking the significantly more bulky teams you see nowadays, add onto the fact that Nidoking is immune to poison and Earth Power + Sludge Wave are the only moves required on Nidoking, Super Fang is an absolute monster of a set.

Assault Vest Nidoking

Nidoking @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 248 SpA / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sludge Wave
- Earth Power
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam

Here we have a Nidoking maqueshifted as his female counterpart because it holds an Assault Vest that sits on a base 85 Spe.
This item prevents Nidoking from using status moves, but you gain the slot for Ice Beam in order to hit a huge variety of targets.
Fire Blast is picked over Flamethrower in order to have a chance to OHKO Ferrothorn.

Dropping LO means to drop a lot of offensive power, so hazards support is mandatory. In return, this Nidoking gains some more staying power towards special attackers.

Calcs:
248 SpA Sheer Force Nidoking Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 176+ SpD Ferrothorn: 320-380 (90.9 - 107.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Choice Specs Spectrier Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Nidoking: 178-210 (58.7 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Slowbro Future Sight vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Nidoking: 218-258 (71.9 - 85.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Nidoking: 222-262 (73.2 - 86.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Latias Psychic vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Nidoking: 218-260 (71.9 - 85.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Nidoking: 109-130 (35.9 - 42.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Nidoking @ Life Orb

Hasty / Mild Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Ice Beam / Flamethrower / Superpower
- Sucker Punch

The King might be a nightmare for the Clefable/Toxapex balance half of the metagame, but he's pretty much a nonentity to the Dragapult/Spectrier HO half; even Substitute means nothing to Mr Infiltrator. So anyway, did you know that Nidoking learns Sucker Punch?

4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult: 172-203 (54.2 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Spectrier: 203-239 (59.5 - 70%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Sucker Punch vs. 112 HP / 20 Def Spectrier: 198-234 (53.6 - 63.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

EAT SHIT GHOSTS. But seriously, Sucker Punch is a legit option that's won me a quite a few games; not only does it dunk on the omnipresent fast Ghosts, but it also helps against other weakened revenge killers and does a solid chunk to Slowking. (Use the second spread if running Superpower - not just on this set, but in general - to guarantee the 2HKO on Blissey.)

Blissey Killer Nidoking

:Nidoking:
Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Rash Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Ice Beam/Flamethrower
- Superpower

This set has a bit of overlap with other already mentioned sets, but this variation has one important purpose: lure in and eliminate Blissey.
Usually the opponent will switch in Blissey on one of its attacks like Earth Power or Sludge Wave. That means it will take at least 21.9 percent damage. After that a few possibilities can happen:
1. It stays in and uses stealth rock or a status move
2. It switches to scout for Superpower
3. It stays in and uses Seismic Toss
All of these options can be exploited by using Sludge Wave, because the worst thing the could happen is Nidoking loosing 100 HP thanks to it being immune to T-Wave and Toxic. After that Blissey should have at most 54.6 % HP. This means it will be KOed by Superpower and your horse or other special attacker can go for the sweep and win you the game.
If there is no Blissey to kill it this set can still do almost everything the standard set can do so it won't be dead weight.

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Blissey: 157-187 (21.9 - 26.1%) -- 9.1% chance to 4HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Blissey: 168-199 (23.5 - 27.8%) -- 78.6% chance to 4HKO
4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 413-489 (57.8 - 68.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Note that this strategy will also work for a potential 0 HP/252 SpD Blissey.

Reserving curse

Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Hp / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Curse
- Poison Jab
- Earthquake
- Throat Chop / Ice Punch / Substitute / Superpower / Brick Break

This thing hits like a truck. People don't expect him to go physical and the surprise value really helps. PJ gets the sheer force boost and wrecks anything that doesn't resist. EQ is EQ and scares out Pex. Last moveslot helps pick your counters: Throat chop deletes dragapult, ice punch is for lando who otherwise laughs at you, sub eases prediction. Superpower hurts blissey more but undoes your boosts so is a lesser option imo. Ig you could use brick break instead but the difference in power sucks.
