Parasect (GP 2/2)

[Overview]

Parasect is sadly just okay in the NU tier. It's slow, not too bulky, and its typing leaves it vulnerable to many common attacking types. However, being a Bug / Grass Pokemon with Dry Skin, Parasect does have the ability to switch into some common threats, such as Golurk and bulky Water-types. The main reason Parasect should ever be used, though, is its access to Spore, one of the greatest support moves available. With it, Parasect can potentially support its team to victory.

[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Spore
move 2: Leech Seed
move 3: Seed Bomb
move 4: X-Scissor / Protect
item: Leftovers
ability: Dry Skin
nature: Impish
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Parasect's main job is to put an enemy Pokemon to sleep with Spore. That way, a partner sweeper has an easier time setting up. Leech Seed helps because it grants Parasect and its teammates healing opportunities. Seed Bomb hits the Pokemon Parasect can switch in on, such as Golurk, Choice Band Sawk, Support Seismitoad, and Alomomola, quite hard. X-Scissor can catch the Sap Sipper Pokemon that try to switch into Spore, such as Sawsbuck, as well as Grass-type Pokemon switching in on a predicted Leech Seed. However, Protect can also be used in that spot to scout for Pokemon with Choice items and all of the super effective attacks that Parasect attracts.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Good examples of partners for Parasect that can set up on sleeping foes are Shell Smash Carracosta and Shift Gear Klang, both of which synergize well with Parasect. Charizard also deserves a mention as an offensive partner, as Parasect can switch in on the Water-types that Charizard brings in. Fighting-types such as Choice Band Sawk can partner with it as well, eliminating Rock-types that can hurt it. Defensively, Rock- and Steel-types, such as Regirock and Metang, are the best partners, as they can handle all of Parasect's weaknesses. To additionally support these partners, Aromatherapy is an option on Parasect, as most clerics, such as Audino and Lickilicky, have a Fighting-type weakness while Parasect does not, so it might fit on a team better.

[Other Options]

Substitute could work on Parasect, as it could form a Spore and SubSeed combination, but its lack of Speed and its frailty negate all of Substitute's advantages. Parasect's frailty, lack of Speed, lack of power, and unfortunate typing also stop it from attempting a Choice Band, Swords Dance, or Agility set, as it is too easily knocked out. Parasect's choice of coverage moves is also quite limited, as it is restrained to Aerial Ace, Shadow Claw, Brick Break, Bullet Seed, and Knock Off. One set that could work on Parasect is a dual screen set, as Spore and Leech Seed could give it many opportunities to set up.

[Checks and Counters]

Sap Sipper Miltank and Insomnia Magmar are two perfect counters to Parasect, as they are immune to Spore and can threaten it out. While Spore limits the number of rock-solid answers to Parasect, once one Pokemon is put to sleep, many Pokemon can switch in and severely hurt or KO Parasect, such as Regice and Charizard. Also, Grass-types who don't mind X-Scissor, such as Tangela and Vileplume, can switch in after a Pokemon is put to sleep and stop Parasect's Leech Seed shenanigans. Flying- and Fire-types easily annihilate it, and most Pokemon with a Lum Berry or Substitute can walk all over Parasect.

[Overview]
 • Parasect is okay in NU, but it struggles to earn a slot on most teams because its offenses and defenses are both lacking and can be easily manipulated.
 • It's situational defensive typing allows it to check threats such as Choiced Sawk, Golurk, and bulky Water-types but leaves it vulnerable to many common threats.
 • Spore is awesome.
[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Spore
move 2: Leech Seed
move 3: Seed Bomb
move 4: X-Scissor / Protect
item: Leftovers
ability: Dry Skin
nature: Impish
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpDef

[SET COMMENTS]
 • The only reason to ever use Parasect is because of its access to Spore, which cripples most Pokemon, allowing partners to set up and sweep with holes in the opponent's team.
 • Dry Skin gives it more opportunities to switch in on bulky Water-types such as Seismitoad and Alomomola.
 • Leech Seed is a safe, utility move that grants Parasect and its team potential healing.
 • Seed Bomb is the primary STAB as it hits Ground-types and Water-types it can safely switch into the hardest.
 • X-Scissor is another STAB option since it hits Sap Sipper Pokemon and Grass-types that are immune to Leech Seed harder.
 • Protect scouts Choice users and super-effective attacks (which are common because of Parasect's typing).
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Aromatherapy is considerable for a slot if people don't want a cleric that is weak to Fighting-type moves such as Lickilicky or Audino.
 • Most setup sweepers enjoy Parasect's partnership, as they can easily set up on a sleeping foe. Good examples are Shell Smash Carracosta and Shift Gear Klang, who both synergize well with it.
 • Charizard is a great offensive partner as it attracts Water-type Pokemon who Parasect can switch in on.
 • Fighting-types such as Choice Band Sawk are great at eliminating Rock-types and Ice-types and Pokemon such as Skuntank, who all give Parsect trouble.
 • Rock- and Steel-types in general are the best defensive partners as the can handle Parasect's Rock-, Flying-, Ice-, Bug-, and Fire-Type weaknesses. Metang and Regirock can both fill this role nicely.
[Other Options]
 • Substitute can be used to create the SubSeed combination, but it is too slow to avoid any status, and most Pokemon can easily break it anyway.
 • Parasect can attempt a Swords Dance set, as it can set up on a foe that it puts to sleep, but its STAB coverage isn't very good alone and can easily be revenge killed.
 • A gimmicky Choice Band set could also work, as Parasect's attack is decent, its coverage leaves much to be desired.
 • Offensive moves it could try to incorporate into a set: Bullet Seed, Aerial Ace, Shadow Claw, Brick Break, Knock Off.
 • Dual Screens could work on Parasect, as it has Spore and Leech Seed to gain multiple opportunities of setting up.
[Checks and Counters]
 • Parasect is really slow, so any Pokemon with decent speed and a strong attack can check Parasect.
 • Once one Pokemon is put to sleep, it is very easy for most Pokemon to switch in and threaten Parasect. Grass-types that don't take much damage from X-Scissor (Tangela, Vileplume etc.) can switch in with impunity to leech seed and go from there.
 • Most special attackers can plow through Parasect's bad Special Defense with super-effective attacks such as Jynx and Charizard, but they cannot switch into Spore.
 • Flying-types easily destroy such as Swellow, but they cannot switch into Spore.
 • Lum Berry pokemon can switch into Spore and force Parasect out.
 • Sap Sipper Miltank and Vital Spirit Magmar are two perfect counters to Parasect, as they can not be put to sleep by Spore.
 • Substitute users such as Braviary can easily manipulate the set.

X-Scissor should be the first slash, it actually hits Grass-types and Sap Sipper mons that basically wall you and also hits Psychic-types like Gardevoir and Mushy. Protect is fine as the second slash, though its mainly for scouting purposes as most people switch out if they are Leech Seeded. Move Substitute from AC to OO, I see no reason to use it, especially when Parasect is really meh as a SubSeeder (even with X-Scissor). Add to SET COMMENTS that Parasect works best as a counter to Seismitoad and some defensive Water-types , and can still check Sawk and Golurk if they are Choice locked into their Fighting or Ground moves. Though tbh Parasect really isn't that good at checking them, or very good in general. Dry Skin needs a bigger mention as the other aspect that makes Parasect remotely usable (along with Spore, so don't say that it is the ONLY reason). I tested it with Charizard, and it looks to be a great teammate in general. Charizard attracts Water moves (especially Aqua Jets), and also handles Ice and Bugs pretty well. Parasect loves switching in on Water moves, and can beat Alomomola and Seismitoad (bulky Waters basically) to let Zard sweep, and also Sporing stuff like Lickilicky/Audino. Fighting-types can handle Rock-types and Dark-types pretty well, notably Golem, Mandibuzz, and Skuntank.

Sap Sipper Miltank to CC, its rare but a perfect counter to Parasect. Same with Vital Spirit Magmar. Point out that once Parasect uses up Spore, it is much easier to counter. Grass-types in particular counter it after Spore is used, being immune to Leech Seed and generally being bulky enough to tank a single X-Scissor and retaliate, especially the likes of Roselia, Vileplume, Tangela, and Ludicolo. I would ditch Stealth Rocks, it honestly doesn't affect Parasect's durability (either it tanks a hit, or it dies) when it has Leech Seed, Lefties, and Dry Skin to mitigate it somewhat. Emphasize that Parasect is really slow, so many Pokemon can outspeed it and heavily damage, if not OHKO, it.

implement this and

In the Overview, don't say it has a "nifty utility movepool," Spore is definitely awesome but that's about all it has. Just say how it doesn't have much of a movepool, but Spore reks.

a bit late, but
"X-Scissor nabs the Sap Sipper Pokemon trying to switch into Spore, such as Sawsbuck and Miltank"
i wouldnt put miltank here since x-scissor does jack shit to it. the only other sap sippers in nu are stantler, girafarig and zebstrika, so either mention one of those (girafarig is hit hard by it, but zebstrika is the only relevant one, and it almost never has sap sipper), or leave it at sawsbuck only. id leave it as mentioning sawsbuck by itself since the others are either not hit hard enough by x-scissor or arent relevant.
