Partner This Pokemon: USM CAP Edition! - Week 6 (Tapu Koko)

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 92 Def / 164 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball / Knock Off

Ferrothorn stacks Spikes for Gliscor which are absolutely necessary on Swords Dance Gliscor builds considering how weak it is even at +2. It switches into Water-types such as Ash-Greninja fairly well, and can pressure Ice-types such as Syclant. Gliscor switches into Heatran, which is one of the best answers to Ferrothorn.
Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 44 Def / 68 SpD / 152 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Roost
- Earthquake
- Facade / Knock Off / Ice Fang

Week 5
Necturna

Shell Smash Necturna has emerged as a powerful foe through the course of CAP's Gen 7 History that is capable of taking out strong defensive Pokemon while boosted and has proven to be an overall terror to the metagame through its clever using of its Sketch slot and the powerful Z-Phantom Force. And while this set is very popular, it is just as capable of running other sets utilizing Sketch, including a viable Sticky Web setter and a much rarer Choice Band attacker. The options are numerous for what to do with this Pokemon, so I look forward to this week's submissions.

Submissions are due by Tuesday 8/14 at 11 PM EST

Also due to last week's lack of submissions, I would like to re-iterate: Reservations expire after 24 hours. You are free to take a reserved mon from the reserver once it passes that time limit.

Necturna is a very powerful setup sweeper with a STAB combo that is nearly unresisted in the meta. Necturna's Ghostium Z provides a one time nuke that can take out some would be checks and doesn't give a free turn to your opponent like Phantom Force does. Its main drawbacks are needing to set up first, not being all that bulky, being weak to both Sucker Punch and Pursuit, not being able to OHKO everything after setup, and being susceptible to the ever present HazeHawk. Substitute is able to make Pursuit and Sucker Punch smaller issues and also makes setup a bit easier.

The other issues can be solved by pairing with VoltSwitch Pokemon and Krilowatt is the one that is most directly beneficial to Necturna. VoltSwitching in general helps soften up Pokemon that may not go down to a +2 Necturna and is capable of getting Necturna in for free without sacrificing a Pokemon. The reason why Krilowatt is the best for supporting Necturna is its ability to counter Tomohawk and pressure Colossoil, which is the primary Sucker Punch and Pursuit user. Most other volt switchers would have to worry about Flying STAB, Toxic, or hazards from Tomohawk, but Kril's natural bulk and electric typing allow it to shrug off Flying attacks and Magic Guard prevents hazard and Toxic damage. Since it will almost always force out Tomohawk, Krilowatt can easily pivot to another Pokemon to keep up momentum or use one of its many coverage moves to weaken the opposing team. And when Necturna's checks and counters are worn down enough, it is able to be pivoted in and clean up.

Memento Tomohawk

Necturna @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Forewarn
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Power Whip
- Phantom Force
- Substitute
- Shell Smash

Tomohawk @ Leftovers / Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hurricane
- Aura Sphere / Focus Blast / Taunt
- Memento
- Rapid Spin / Haze / Stealth Rock

Shell Smash Necturna is a powerful sweeper, it just need to have a way to create a scenary where it can set up... And this is where Memento comes in play. This set mix utility and power, with Hurricane and Aura Sphere / Focus Blast helping to open holes in the foe's team to help Nectura in the late-game, or using Taunt to help the team's matchup against more defensive teams, or just to avoid the opponent can put entry hazards.

Now, Memento is the important part of this set, because at the cost of Tomohawk itself, it'll lower the opponent offensive stats and it'll block any incoming attack in this turn (including Defog and Rapid Spin) and helping to bring Necturna safely. From then, Necturna can use Substitute or Shell Smash to sweep the opponent's team.

Heatran is a great partner with Necturna for many reasons. Firstly, the typing is great as Necturna can pressure Pokemon that Heatran doesn't appreciate such as Arghonaut or Zygarde. Killing Heatran with some Pokemon in the late game will give necturna a free setup opportunity thanks to the great typing synergy, this means Landorus-T, Zygarde, Greninja, Volkraken, Gliscor, Lele, Jumbao and Bulu locked into Superpower, and Kartana locked into Sacred Sword all give this potent threat easy set up opportunities. Heatran also provides Necturna with a direct threat to defensive Tomohawk, thus keeping pressure up all game and if you're running Stealth Rock it basically means spinner Hawk is gonna be pressured to do its role immensely. As for defensive synergy, Heatran provides a Fire immunity as well as a Flying resist, both of which Necturna appreciates meaning pokemon like Zapdos, Tornadus or Pyroak are going to be switching out more making them weaker in the late game to get swept by your Phantom Force and less reliant on a Z Move. Also a small note, at +2 spe Phantom Force becomes a reliable stab and with rocks up plus your boost, it becomes increasingly difficult to switch into.

Week 6
Tapu Koko

With a blistering Speed stat and Electric Terrain at its disposal, Tapu Koko is one of the strongest Electric-types in the metagame. Access to both U-turn and Volt Switch also make it a premier pivot, able to generate momentum against a majority of Pokemon present. It can run a multitude of different sets, from a powerful Choice Specs attacker to a Dual Screen utility setter to even the surprising Z-Wild Charge backed off of its respectable attack stat. Plenty of options but only one partner, so what will you choose this week?

Submissions are due by Sunday, 9/16 at 5 PM EST

Get to it!

Tapu Koko @ Light Clay
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Taunt
- U-turn

Naviathan @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Facade
- Icicle Crash
Oh boy here we go. If you thought Tapu Koko + Hawlucha is ludicrous, try this guy out. Tapu Koko doesn't really do much except for enabling Naviathan, but that's all it needs to do. Once Naviathan has the bulk to set up one or two Dragon Dances, almost everything just falls apart, either due to sheer power or some lucky flinches. Of course, you'll need some Stealth Rock support and some Ferrothorn help, but this is a really good start to a Screens team.

Tapu Koko @ Leftovers
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 20 HP / 252 SpA / 20 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn

Victini @ Choice Band
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- V-create
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn
- Zen Headbutt

Victini forms an effective voltturn core with Tapu Koko, as Victini can safely come in on the bulky grasses Koko hates and click one of its powerful attacks. Tapu Koko can also provide defog support and safe switchins for Victini allowing it to continue performing its role throughout the match. Electric Terrain also boosts Bolt Strike's power, most notably allowing it to 2HKO Heatran and OHKO Crucibelle and Arghonaut.
