XY NU Pawn Star (Reached 1510, #97 on NU ladder)

What's good Smogon! This is my first RMT so any and all feedback would be appreciated. My name's Alex and I'm a college baseball player who has been battling competitively since Gen 4, specifically NU. I make a mean grilled cheese, recommended by 4 out of 5 dentists, and would wreck you at chinese checkers. But enough about me, check out the squad!

I always wanted to build and use a team around Pawniard. Besides the fact that he may be one of the coolest looking pre-evos in the game, it can perform similarly to that of it's evolution Bisharp in OU. So without further ado, my first NU RMT- Pawn Star

1. Lil Man (Pawniard) @ Eviolite
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head

One could suggest that the easiest way to use Pawniard is to set up and sweep with sucker punch, but even with an eviolite Pawniard is frailer than a napkin. So why not let the opponent set up for you? With Defiant, Pawniard gets +2 Atk for every stat lowered, whether it be intimidate, sticky web, or defog. With +2 Pawniard wrecks weakened teams with knock off/iron head combos and sucker punch for faster mons. SD is there in case all else fails or you have an opportunity to set up on something that cant knock you out in one hit, such as choiced pokemon locked into resisted or immune moves. With defog everywhere nowadays I thought that would be the way to get myself in the best position to sweep with Pawniard. But in order to get someone to defog, there needs to be hazards, so hazards they're gonna get.

211.png

2. Smooch (Qwilfish) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spikes
- Toxic Spikes
- Taunt
- Explosion

I wanted to pressure my opponent to start thinking about defogging as early as possible, so I looked for a lead that could set up hazards while disabling the opponent from setting up theres, and I decided Qwilfish fit the bill fine. It has a very modest speed stat that hits 295 and outspeeds a lot of current NU leads and guarentees at least 2 spikes of your choice if you like. Taunt is there to negate the opponents hazards and explosion can be a surprising play that can cripple a key pokemon for your opponent, also blocking your opponents Rapid Spin that turn as well

208-m.png

3. A$AP (Steelix) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Earthquake
- Iron Head

I had spikes and T-spikes covered, but I needed Rocks and a phaser since my team doesn't appreciate set up mons such as bulk up gurdurr and DD feraligatr. I considered Golem, but I didn't want to deal with a 4x weakness to grass and water, which are 2 very common types due to numerous fire/water/grass cores. Steelix does the job nicely while hitting hard with STAB sheer force iron head and earthquake. I decided that I wanted it to handle both physical and special attacks in order to faze so the EV's went towards SpD due to Steelix's skyscraper defenses. Pawniard should take notes

Spr_4h_115.png

4. Pillage (Kangaskhan) @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Double-Edge
- Earthquake
- Sucker Punch

Next I wanted a bulky fake out user that could wear down opponents poisoned from the T-spikes. The best fake out user in the tier is Kangaskhan, so I threw a silk scarf on it and let it run wild. I like the power that double edge gives over return, and sucker punch hits faster mons that could easily KO Kangaskhan, and it has somewhat of a surprise factor after a fake out. Earthquake or drain punch was debated for a while but I'd much rather have the power of earthquake over recovery in the weaker drain punch

5. Bob (Typhlosion) @ Expert Belt
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Eruption
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Looking at my team I was in need of some speed and a special attacker. I chose E-Belt Jolly Typhlosion because I can bluff the common scarf with the damage from a non-super effective eruption or fire blast, then surprise lickilicky and audino with focus blast or seismitoad and lanturn with HP grass. It catches a lot of players off guard, and it eases predictions due to it not being locked into one move. I also like the fact that you rarely see a Typhlosion in the current meta that isn't choiced, and uniqueness alone is something that can win you a game or two

442.png

6. Grandma (Spiritomb) @ Leftovers
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Calm Mind
- Dark Pulse

Lastly I ended my team with Crotomb. Now I know I may get some hate for this mon but it really fit in well with my team. With all the emphasis on hazards and defog I didnt want a rapid spinner to just get rid of them for free, so I needed a ghost type. Looking at my team I concluded that I also needed bulk and a special attacker, and I immediately thought of Crotomb. It beats Bulk Up Gurdurr 1v1 and with the right rolls it can sweep unsuspecting fairy-less teams. Dark Pulse because of STAB and the fact that no type is immune, which means if you set up enough calm minds you can deal heavy damage despite resistances. It's also a decent pivot switch into a hazard user, which makes it even more useful for this team.

So there you guys have it! I have reached 1500 on the NU ladder for the first time with this team, but I have seem to hit a wall and can't advance much higher. Thanks again for reading my post, feel free to leave critique down below! Peace :]

PS nothing but love for these old sprites, cause they're what got us to where we are today

Cool spike stacking team Vi, however I have a few changes you can make to improve your team. I feel like Defensive Spike Stacking Qwilfish would be better, because once qwilfish dies from suicide feraligatr is a huge threat to your team. Also Defensive Qwilfish keeps you from getting rekt by calm mind slurpuff and fire spam. Your team is also relatively slow, that is why I think you should run scarf over expert belt on Typhlosion. You use typhlosion to get past audino and the licki thingy, however spiritomb handles both relatively well because it rekts stall teams.

Qwilfish @ Black Sludge
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature

- Toxic Spikes / Pain Split
- Poison Jab
- Thunder Wave

Cool team VI Minutes , but I can easily see some issue with your team: You are really weak to Ground- and Water-types.

To fix this while trying to keep the theme of your team (Entry Hazards stacking w/ a Pawniard), I am going to suggest Physically Defensive Seismitoad > Steelix as your Stealth Rock setter. Seismitoad will help cover Feraligatr, Lanturn, and other Water-types that could otherwise be a Problem for your team. You also keep a physically defensive Ground-type by doing so, and with Pawniard and my next suggestions your team will still be able to handle Normal- and Flying-type Pokemon.

Seismitoad @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 200 HP / 252 Def / 56 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Stealth Rock
- Knock Off / Toxic

Next, I am going to suggest Garbodor > Qwilfish. Like Qwilfish, Garbodor has access to Spikes and Toxic Spikes and keeps the Poison typing to absorb Toxic Spikes. It will also help weaken things that would usually switch on Kangaskhan and Typhlosion with this set (believe me this set actually works):

garbodor.gif

Garbodor @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Toxic Spikes
- Seed Bomb
- Drain Punch / Gunk Shot

Since your team (with and without my suggestions) seems to have problems with Pelipper and some other Pokemon, I am going to suggest making Typhlosion Choice Specs > Choice Scarf to help break potential checks to Kangaskhan and Pawniard more easily, and Choice Scarf Rotom-N > Spiritomb to give your team some needed speed and have another answers to Water- and Flying-type Pokemon while still being able to cripple walls with Trick.

typhlosion.gif

Typhlosion @ Choice Specs

Hope I helped!

Soulgazer after playing around a bit I realized that my team really benefits from a taunt user and so I kept Qwilfish over Garboder. I also liked having a phazer to rack up damage and pressure opponents, so even though I really liked the seismitoad set (It worked pretty well with the revised team) I decided that Steelix would be kept as is.

However, I loved the extra power Specs Typhlosion brought as it could eliminate threats with Explosion (Too much power) and the versatility scarf rotom brought, so I changed those as well. My team now sits as follows.

So I guess this is considered my bump? The team may not look the best on paper but it's really working well! Thanks again for the help :]

Gurdurr kinda destroys your team with the changes, as really nothing handles it but typhlosion (with no move killing gurdurr unless max hp eruption) and tricking scarf from rotom (very predictable). The change to garbodor lets you kill or at least wear down gurdurr enough so its easily revenge killed. You could also try haunter>rotom, as scarfed haunter hits more than 10% harder, is faster and can run destiny bond to get a kill in a pinch. Rotom also isnt that great of a berd check (though it can take 1 hit from archeops or swellow, but steelix is a good enough answer). Rotom does better handle feraligatr and samurott, but kangaskan is a really good answer to both anyways, as fake out + double edge will essentially kill feraligatr with hazards and life orb damage, or if feraligatr is not at +2, kanga can easily handle it. If you do run Rotom, it should have tbolt> will-o-wisp, as volt switch will have no chance to kill gatr without a ton of hazards on the field.

Haunter @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Shadow Ball
- Destiny Bond
- Energy Ball

Thanks for the advice Shuckleking87! Again I just feel taunt alone is what's keeping Qwilfish over Garbodor, if I start seeing less use of it I may switch back to Garbodor as it does work effectively as well. I've never had much success with scarf haunter but I could give it a shot.

What do you guys think about a defensive Gourgeist-small? I've used it on past teams and it is quite effective. it adds bulk, counters Feraligatr and Lanturn decently and can beat Gurdurr 1v1 on switch in along with maintaining the spin blocking ability. Here's the set

gourgeist-super.png

Gourgeist-Small @ Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 Def / 252 Spe
Bold Nature
- Substitute
- Will-O-Wisp
- Leech Seed
- Protect

It can burn steel types, levitate mons and Flying types along with Feraligatr's that have used their lum on t-spike poison along with sub/seed and protect to help deteriorate opposing mons affected by t-spikes

Solid team, I agree with soulgazer and think you should use a more versatile pokemon than steelix as your stealth rock user. Steelix currently makes you even more vulnerable to water/ground/fighting/fire. With his suggestion of Seismitoed you only gain one new weaknesses your team didnt have, but you add in a lot of key resistances.

In addition, I dont know if typhlosion is the right fit on a fast paced team like this. you dont necessarily need speed as you have priority in kanga and baby bish. I would replace it with Mesprit as its great answer to fighting types, handles fairies very well [which you need to because youre running restalk spiritomb], and is a pretty quick mon in itself. it baits in special walls for crotomb to do some work later on in the game and has great coverage in psychic / filler essentially lol.

mesprit.gif

Mesprit @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Substitute
- Psyshock
- Ice Beam / Dazzling Gleam / Thunderbolt / giga Drain

you could also use uxie if you want more speed and bulk. However it doesnt learn Ice Beam so you'd be stuck with dazzling gleam or giga drain.
