What's good Smogon! This is my first RMT so any and all feedback would be appreciated. My name's Alex and I'm a college baseball player who has been battling competitively since Gen 4, specifically NU. I make a mean grilled cheese, recommended by 4 out of 5 dentists, and would wreck you at chinese checkers. But enough about me, check out the squad!
I always wanted to build and use a team around Pawniard. Besides the fact that he may be one of the coolest looking pre-evos in the game, it can perform similarly to that of it's evolution Bisharp in OU. So without further ado, my first NU RMT- Pawn Star
1. Lil Man (Pawniard) @ Eviolite
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
One could suggest that the easiest way to use Pawniard is to set up and sweep with sucker punch, but even with an eviolite Pawniard is frailer than a napkin. So why not let the opponent set up for you? With Defiant, Pawniard gets +2 Atk for every stat lowered, whether it be intimidate, sticky web, or defog. With +2 Pawniard wrecks weakened teams with knock off/iron head combos and sucker punch for faster mons. SD is there in case all else fails or you have an opportunity to set up on something that cant knock you out in one hit, such as choiced pokemon locked into resisted or immune moves. With defog everywhere nowadays I thought that would be the way to get myself in the best position to sweep with Pawniard. But in order to get someone to defog, there needs to be hazards, so hazards they're gonna get.
2. Smooch (Qwilfish) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spikes
- Toxic Spikes
- Taunt
- Explosion
I wanted to pressure my opponent to start thinking about defogging as early as possible, so I looked for a lead that could set up hazards while disabling the opponent from setting up theres, and I decided Qwilfish fit the bill fine. It has a very modest speed stat that hits 295 and outspeeds a lot of current NU leads and guarentees at least 2 spikes of your choice if you like. Taunt is there to negate the opponents hazards and explosion can be a surprising play that can cripple a key pokemon for your opponent, also blocking your opponents Rapid Spin that turn as well
3. A$AP (Steelix) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
I had spikes and T-spikes covered, but I needed Rocks and a phaser since my team doesn't appreciate set up mons such as bulk up gurdurr and DD feraligatr. I considered Golem, but I didn't want to deal with a 4x weakness to grass and water, which are 2 very common types due to numerous fire/water/grass cores. Steelix does the job nicely while hitting hard with STAB sheer force iron head and earthquake. I decided that I wanted it to handle both physical and special attacks in order to faze so the EV's went towards SpD due to Steelix's skyscraper defenses. Pawniard should take notes
4. Pillage (Kangaskhan) @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Double-Edge
- Earthquake
- Sucker Punch
Next I wanted a bulky fake out user that could wear down opponents poisoned from the T-spikes. The best fake out user in the tier is Kangaskhan, so I threw a silk scarf on it and let it run wild. I like the power that double edge gives over return, and sucker punch hits faster mons that could easily KO Kangaskhan, and it has somewhat of a surprise factor after a fake out. Earthquake or drain punch was debated for a while but I'd much rather have the power of earthquake over recovery in the weaker drain punch
5. Bob (Typhlosion) @ Expert Belt
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Eruption
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]
Looking at my team I was in need of some speed and a special attacker. I chose E-Belt Jolly Typhlosion because I can bluff the common scarf with the damage from a non-super effective eruption or fire blast, then surprise lickilicky and audino with focus blast or seismitoad and lanturn with HP grass. It catches a lot of players off guard, and it eases predictions due to it not being locked into one move. I also like the fact that you rarely see a Typhlosion in the current meta that isn't choiced, and uniqueness alone is something that can win you a game or two
6. Grandma (Spiritomb) @ Leftovers
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Calm Mind
- Dark Pulse
Lastly I ended my team with Crotomb. Now I know I may get some hate for this mon but it really fit in well with my team. With all the emphasis on hazards and defog I didnt want a rapid spinner to just get rid of them for free, so I needed a ghost type. Looking at my team I concluded that I also needed bulk and a special attacker, and I immediately thought of Crotomb. It beats Bulk Up Gurdurr 1v1 and with the right rolls it can sweep unsuspecting fairy-less teams. Dark Pulse because of STAB and the fact that no type is immune, which means if you set up enough calm minds you can deal heavy damage despite resistances. It's also a decent pivot switch into a hazard user, which makes it even more useful for this team.
So there you guys have it! I have reached 1500 on the NU ladder for the first time with this team, but I have seem to hit a wall and can't advance much higher. Thanks again for reading my post, feel free to leave critique down below! Peace :]
PS nothing but love for these old sprites, cause they're what got us to where we are today
