Phantasy Star Zero

Is anyone else here getting this? For those unfamiliar with the original Phantasy Star Online, it's a hack and slash with a setting that mixes science fiction and fantasy and a large emphasis on grinding and hunting rare items. Obviously, four people can play together online, so I'd like to set up groups with Smogon members if possible. I don't know my friend code yet, so I'll post it later if people are interested. Post your codes here and discuss the game.

It isn't out in Australia yet, waiting for the rom dump is tedious. The people from the states who went out and purchased legit copies say that it's pretty decent but you can't communicate with your friends using the DS mic, there is a small picto chat like chat function that kind of sucks.

My overseas bros have set up an IRC channel and skype/vent or whatever to get around this. So far they've said that it's really rewarding and superior to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles which is a game in the same vein.

I plan on getting this. The original PSO series was utterly amazing and I'm hearing that this is pretty much the same game. I'm somewhat doubtful it will be as good, but I'm sure I'll have fun!

Definitely going to be a FoMar.

I've been on a PSO:BB kick recently and I can say that this is a refreshing addition to the series. It all feels very familiar while still being different enough to make me feel like I’m not wasting my time. I’m loving the weapon choices as well as the Photon Arts. The replay value is through the roof.

It's noob friendly too. All the nitty gritty things that turn people away from PSO have been removed or made easier. Mags and items drops are two big changes, for example (and oh my god Photon Drops).

It is by no means perfect but certainly worth picking up and having a romp around online. Hackers seem to be low right now so online is full of friendly players who are actually quite courteous.

Story mode is alright, but after about lv30 or so your party members become nothing but meat shields; their weapons do not upgrade. You’re dealing hundreds of damage in a combo but they are still lucky to break 20. It is not helpful when bosses have ridiculous amount of life. The healer is good though, She knows when to spam the group healing spell.

All in all I'm pleased with this game. Newcomers should not be intimidated and fans of the series won't be taking pitchforks and torches to the Sega HQ. Good game.

Out of curiosity, how much does it require internet access to play. I'm thinking of picking it up, but if it's only a decent game when online, I'll get something else.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. If you're asking how much it costs to play online, then the answer is nothing, as Nintendo Wifi is free. If you're asking that it requires internet access to play, then no, there's an offline story mode as well.

Gonna check if they have a copy in 2 game retailers close, definitely buying this if my budget is fine with the price.

If I were to be totally honest, this game loses a lot of potential if you don't have anyone to Wifi/Wireless play with. Besides the obvious (can't trade for rares, can't get extra help powerleveling low level characters :naughty:, etc...), this game is a lot more fun with actual humans due to the terrible quality of the AI party members. Only one of them is actually useful and she'll just die before she can help you in the higher difficulties (she's the healer). It also becomes hopelessly repetitive in the later part of the game's story mode, which I feel can only be balanced out by having fresh new faces to kick ass with in multiplayer.

The story mode is about 10 hours long, there's 3 different stories, and 3 difficulties. It's not like there's a lack of things to do in single player, but you'll be at a serious disadvantage (lack of trades for good rares that are actually useful to you), as well as stuck in a group with AI that couldn't beat a retarded 18 m/o in a drooling contest.

I can't recommend this game in good conscience if you do not have at least 1 other local person to play with, let alone a whole Internets worth of potential players.
