Platinum/HG/SS Battle Frontier and DP Battle Tower Records

This will probably get needlessly lengthy, but regardless...

I'm a noob to this forum, though I've lurked for a while, mostly to keep myself up-to-date with the D/P Battle Tower Record thread. See, I became positively addicted to the strategy involved in Pokemon. I had Red/Blue/Gold/Silver as a kid, but I stopped there-- I had grown "too old" to continue with Pokemon and I gave up on it, effectively skipping the GBA era. Then, in junior year of high school my friends decided to play Diamond and Pearl. I called them losers. "Pokemon is a kid's game!" said I. "How can you play that garbage?"
Well, after some coaxing and that always annoying "you just don't think you'd be any good at it" remark, I bought Diamond. Simple game, simple story. I beat it with no trouble. Then, the completionist that I was, I decided to get a 100 win streak in the Battle Tower. "This should be no problem!" thought I.
Well, I was dumb. I had no idea about EV's, IV's, natures.. I thought it was a standard RPG: you level up, learn the strongest attacks, you win. I slowly learned the intricacies of the game, turned to the original Battle Tower Thread, and started to develop better teams.

Over 700 hours later, I got 111 wins. Yippee. Compared to what other people have, that's pitiful, but I was happy. Now, my friends still play the games, but I can beat them without even trying. I realized that all that time spent may have been for naught.. So.. I decided that, even though my "records" will likely soon fall off the radar, I'll at least post what I was able to come up with after playing through Platinum's Battle Frontier.

I used this team for all facilities (which wasn't necessarily a good idea considering how item-reliant it is):

The flincher from the main site. She did absolute marvels with stalling, and if I was lucky she'd be near full health after taking out one of her opponents. A bunch of times she could solo entire teams. With paralysis and flinching, the opponent rarely got to attack, and if s/he did, I could usually roost until they were struck with full paralysis and then start flinching again. I would usually flinch even if it wasn't very effective, since I could get more leftovers recovery that way. The fact that she could stall Gyarados with stone edge unless he got a crit the first turn was much appreciated.

Standard. Kill whatever possible, destiny bond after. If Garchomp or Dragonite was the opponent's lead, I'd usually switch out Togekiss for fear of Outrage and go straight to Gengar who would destiny bond, and then promptly switch back to Togekiss.

Again standard, though I rarely used Swords Dance. If Togekiss was facing an electric type, I'd switch immediately to Garchomp (she could stall MOST ice types after paralysis, and any that she couldn't would be suicided by Gengar). He was also great at killing that damned double-teaming Shuckle, and since I always SD'd to full to take him out, it would be a clean sweep to the end.


Platinum Battle Tower Single Record: 120

Lost to a Regice lead that I thought I could stall with Togekiss. I used thunder wave, but he had a lum berry (which is why I regret never checking the list of pokemon in the BT). He used amnesia, I used thunder wave again, he used ice beam and froze me, hooray. Togekiss was dead at that point, I didn't expect her to thaw and she didn't. Gengar couldn't kill with focus blast, so I destiny bonded and prayed Garchomp could take on the rest. First out was Suicune who used Icy Wind and killed my Yache Berry. Garchomp KO'd it with two earthquakes, but out came an Articuno. I used Outrage and prayed for a critical, but no such luck. Ice beam, dead. I probably could've avoided that loss, whatever. I may try again.


Platinum Battle Hall Single Record: 180

Used Garchomp with a sash, but I can see everyone's been doing that. I think I lost to Abomasnow, I should've tacked on Fire Fang.

Platinum Battle Castle Single Record: 50

Ha. I could've done better, I had hundreds of saved CP but I wasted it all to skip the entire 7th round to fight the Brain, coz all I wanted was the gold.

Platinum Battle Arcade Single Record: 55

Ha. I laughed. Very hard. My team got switched with the opponent's. I forgot what I got stuck with, but oh well.

Platinum Battle Factory Single Record (Open Level): 52

Okay. I am actually really happy with this. I just wanted the gold from the frontier brain, that's it, and it took so many effing attempts. I cursed so many times, I hate this place and I'll probably just stay satisfied with my 52 wins coz I don't even know if I could get that far again. I forget what I lost with, I just remember thinking it was mediocre. I remember the second fight with the Frontier Brain though. I had a scarfed Tyranitar with the elemental punches as my lead, a dragon dancing/resting Gyarados, and that Cresselia with sunny day and moonlight. I got lucky with his lead, Suicune. I sent out Gyarados and dragon danced about 4 times in its face (my speed never got high, it kept using icy wind), rested, chesto berry woke me up, waterfall. Waterfall'd Forretress and actually OHKO'd it. Then Jynx came out. I forget what happened, it was either faster or maybe I missed? but Gyarados died to psychic, and Tyranitar retaliated with Fire Punch.


That about sums everything up. I'll probably cave and try the Battle Tower again, I don't really care enough about the other facilities, though the Hall was fun. Definitely never wanna touch Factory again.

...well, I'm having difficulties in this frontier (easily more difficult than Emeralds)

anyway, Factory, I just quit after the second battle- Acid Armoring Grimer destroyed my entire rental team @ L50.

Meanwhile, the Castle was the only one i've gotten a symbol for so far, and even then I failed at number 23, as I got destroyed by a Purguly. I KO'ed the first pokes with my Staraptor, then Staraptor and Torterra got killed by Attract/Body Slam before my Gallade KO'ed it. THen Gallade died to a Power Herbing/Sky Attack Togekiss. But at the least I've gotten a symbol there.

Meanwhile... the Battle Hall is pissing me off. To be different, I've gone in with my Torterra (Original Starter), and attempted to go through Ice first, holding a Yache to be safe. The first time, I died at Rank 7, to a Sealeo- STAB SE Razor Leaf didn't OHKO, Blizzard did even with Yache.

However, this is the one I sent my last trip on, but it died, again to a Cloyster surviving Seed Bomb on Rank 10, then OHKOing with a CH Ice Beam. But really I haven't seen that much Hax yet, i've gotten close with a Frostlass- but Blizzard missed b/f I KOed it.

is there anything I can do, or am I just forced to use someone different? I've tried my Gallade (Ice Punch/Psycho Cutter/CC/SD @ Lum Berry) but after Starting with Flying I died to a Staraptor on Rank 6 or 7 from Brave Bird...

haven't tried the Tower or Arcade yet.
 
Don't really have a trained team so have been going at the battle factory only so far with the latest streak ending at 32 for Lv50 singles. Destiny Bond/Explosion have been really helpful but explosion sure had a lot more misses than I would have liked... Floatzel and starmie seem to be often my streak enders for me with their speed and damage so bulky water pokes are always nice to have around.

My favourite rental so far is probably Gliscor with Earthquake, an air attack (probably aerial ace, don't remember exactly), swords dance, and baton pass.
 
Well, I actually got something going in the Level 50 Single Battle Factory, a new high streak for me of 34.

The streak ended in a battle with a water specialist. It ended up my Electric, Raichu, against a Politoed. Raichu Thunderpunched and didn't KO, and Politoed KOed with Earthquake, ending my streak.

I got some serious luck on this, and I doubt this'll stand for long, but I'm proud of my 34.
 
A slowbro ended my streak. Outrage failed the KO, while Ice Beam didn't

scarfkiss would suffer similar weavile problems, although it would definately have a better shot at survival than garchomp or salamence. however, by running an item that isn't a focus sash you leave yourself open to all the things you can't 1HKO nailing you with freak critical hits. If i ever get around to making a good togekiss I'll likely take it to the battle hall.
 
that togekiss is faster than weavile and therefore has a 54.15% chance of beating weavile, which is a lot better than salamence and garchomp's chances. there's other pokes scarfkiss has trouble with but it's the best hall poke posted thus far

In my opinion battle arcade isn't very hard as long as you can avoid any major problems on the game board, the worst one IMO is switch teams, It cost me my first streak and almost cost me this one.

EDIT: lost at 67 wins, up against a pory2 t-tar dragon dances pory2 uses signal beam, critical hit, t-tar is confused, next turn t-tar hurts itself in its confusion, pory2 finishes it off with signal beam, I send in chomp and for some reason use swords dance, pory2 uses ice beam chomp dies, I send in latios and kill it with dragon pulse, he sends in walrein, i dragon pulse, then he kills me with ice beam.
 
Seriously, this early on, if one person has to break a record I've posted it's M Dragon, we all know more people will do really well though, but I've got to say good luck on that Arcade streak.

Seriously, I need to work on another team soon for this because I think Starmie/Garchomp/Scizor is good but not 200-streak worthy. I get bored with Trick teams though so who knows what I'll do.

Edit: I'll have to theorymon this more but would a Rain team work in the frontier? I know it's quite strange but it's a fun idea, I'd like a few opinions before I actually go training Pokemon for it.
 
EDIT: Just reached 203 wins and still going.

I just reached 105 wins in the Battle Tower and still going strong. Although, I'm probably going to take a break from it for a bit and try out the other facilities. Here's my team:

Quadraxis (Metagross) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP/228 Spd/28 SDef
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Trick
- Stealth Rock
- Flash
- Protect

As you can see, this is just a Trick-lead. Fairly simple strategy, always Trick on the first turn (even if you know Metagross is just going to get KOed afterwards) and depending on what move the opponent is stuck on, we'll move from there. Stealth Rock is there to get rid of any potential Focus Sashers (especially ones with Mirror Coat/Counter) and is usually the second move I use after Trick if I see that I can still take a hit. Flash is basically there to screw over the opposing lead even more by reducing their accuracy so Suicune set up for free. And Protect is just for PP Stalling, especially against the Quick Claw OHKO users. Since OHKO moves only have 30 accuracy and 5 PP, with the combination of Flash and Protect, they rarely land a shot. This is also sort of a suicide lead because after I Trick and SR, I usually alternate between Flash and Protect until I die (usually but not always). The Speed EVs and Choice Scarf gives Metagross 384 Speed, enough to outspeed +nature base 125's.

Suicune absorbs the Water, Fire, and Ground moves that Metagross attracts and sets up as the opponent is stuck on one of the above attacking types. Given its bulk, Suicune is the primary sweeper of this team. Any time the opponent is stuck on a damaging move that's not Electric or Grass (the opponent will never use a Grass move on Metagross anyway) I go to Suicune. Pressure is also great and usually forces the opponent to Struggle until they die while I just keep CMing to +6 and Resting when necessary.

Rampage (Garchomp) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sand Veil
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Fire Fang
- Swords Dance

Standard broken Yache Berry SDChomp. Since I can't abuse him on Shoddy or Wifi anymore the Battle Tower is the next best thing. But to be honest, I rarely get to use him mostly because he is vunerable to status hax and what not; making Suicune the better choice when going against a locked damaging move. Anyways, this guy absorbs the Electric attacks that Metagross (or any Steel for that matter) tend to attract. After being Tricked and stuck on an Electric move, Garchomp just gets 3 SDs and sweeps. Basically, I switch this guy in on any locked non-damaging move that doesn't cause status (i.e. Calm Mind, Double Team, Amnesia, etc.) and SD to +6.

**I replaced Garchomp's Yache Berry with Focus Sash after battle 105 just to see which item is better for the Battle Tower. I've found Focus Sash to be more useful since it protects Garchomp from crit Ice moves. In one battle I was down to only Garchomp after my Suicune got crited and died. The opponent used Ice Beam on Garchomp as I SD'ed and crited me again but thanks to the Focus Sash I was able to live it and KO for the win. Yache Berry wouldn't have saved me from that.

In the battle factory, when i had a RD swift swim ludicolo, it worked pretty well, so I guess RD teams could work well

13th opponent: Claydol (Trick Room, Zen Headbutt), Manectric (Thunder Fang), Garchomp (Double Team, Sandstorm, Earthquake) --> meh, I lost, I was like HOLY SHIT, when I saw Chomp, then relieved when it used moves like Sandstorm, but it then ran through Arcanine and Nidoqueen ( I so hoped shed survive the EQ q_q ), Golduck could take it out, but it was so damaged that Manectric just had to use Thunder Fang. I shouldve used Endure + Reversal with Arcanine x_

Isn't that just the chance that Scarfkiss will win after flinching Weavile on Turn 1? My calcs indicate that Ice Punch + Ice Shard isn't close to a guaranteed 2HKO, even with crit or freeze included. Did I get it wrong? Yes, I forgot STAB! Thanks, Peterko.

Just for the record. I don't think Scarfkiss is the best hall poke so far. Although, it certainly has potential. I acknowledge that your theorymon is superior to mine. But you know, seeing is believing.

lol about "best hall poké"...isn´t it just a little bit too early for this? I mean this will take at least 6 months...let´s give it time...my current theorymon which I ran through all of the rank 10 pokémon is quite good and can be the best under some circumstances (I have to figure out how the AI behaves in some situations first)...it´s all theory and that is on hold, because I am working on a video world champs theorymon / breeding / training etc.

I have 28 wins in the Battle Factory Open Level atm. I'm not out yet though, going to see if I can get further later.

For the last seven I had Electivire, Milotic, and Arcanine. Electivire had Thunderpunch/Fire Punch/Ice Punch/Earthquake. Milotic had Surf/Ice Beam/Dragon Pulse/Recover. Arcanine had Flare Blitz/Extremespeed/Crunch/Thunder Fang.

I forget what I had in the previous rounds aside from the third since I saved the battle. I had a Sunny Day Infernape, Snorlax, and Aerodactyl. In the first/second I had a Swampert and Cradily but that's all I remember.

I'll have to make sure I keep track from now on.

At the Battle Hall I ended at 172 wins with

- Fire Fang / Hydro Pump (I had cloned the Salamence and switched the two depending on which move I needed. I only used the one with Hydro Pump for Rock though.)

I lost against a Rank 10 Venasaur. It survived Outrage with its Focus Sash and used Toxic on me. The next two turns it used Protect while Toxic damaged me. I tried to Outrage again but Salamence hurt itself in its confusion. Venasaur then used Sludge and that plus the damage from Toxic took me down.

I'll probably try the Battle Hall again later since I want to break 200.

I ran into the dreaded Lickilicky that some people were talking about! Fortunately I met it at a lower rank and Ice Punch didn't freeze me, haha.
 
My Battle Arcade streak came to a screeching halt (at 33) when I got the 'swap teams' tile. Ugh, it didn't help that I got Starmie/Alakazam/Armaldo vs. my Empoleon/Scizor/Garchomp. I took a break and upped my Battle Castle record (got first plate + 1 streak, don't know what that is lol) but Battle Arcade is definitely starting to be one of my favorite facilities... At least I can stay awake while playing it!

My team was:

- Grass Knot
- Hidden Power Ground (67~68)

Pretty much the only pokemon that I had to use, she rips shit up. Even though she doesn't have Choice Specs, STAB Surf is still pretty lethal and the type coverage is excellent.

- Pursuit
- Bullet Punch

This set is kinda shitty (For Frontier at least), aside from BP. I need to trade it back to Diamond and clone it, and stick on X-Scissor and Night Slash.

Garchomp
- Outrage

Back-up sweeper if Empoleon dies, and most of the opponents team should be weakened if Empoleon is gone so Outrage was basically the only move I used... Earthquake once or twice for a few steel-types.

As you can see, my mindset is to sweep the hell out of the opponent and I tried to string together 3 powerful sweepers who weren't all weak to 1 common type from the limited pool I could choose from in my Platinum cart.

PS: Dammit I missed getting on the leaderboard by 2 battles. :pirate:
 
I think it's mainly for Magnezone. Otherwise, Surf would be just as good in all the situations I can think of.

Edit: Pah, of course. Lanturn always escapes me. >_>

I found it more of a convenience, as the only time I had to use it was against Lanturn, and I used it against Magnezone to make sure it would die though I assume Surf would still deal a lot of damage. It did help in those 2 cases, but you can just switch against Lanturn anyway (Bar Battle Hall). If you are having trouble finding / breeding for a HP Ground Empoleon for the Battle Frontier it honestly it's neccessary at all. Most of the time I'm using Surf and Grass Knot anyway.
 
after running a scarfkiss in the battle hall there some observations I'd like to point out.

1. As I predicted, the lack of stopping power really hurts the set. I find myself relying heavily on that 60% flinch chance, and I highly doubt my luck with flinch has been 60%. Also, unless you catch some divine intervention, Chansey/Blissey/Snorlax wall you completely. Lots of other minor threats get the chance to take you out as well, where garchomp/salamence are typically 1 hit or be 1 hit situations.

2. Once again, Chansey/Blissey/Snorlax wall you completely. I haven't encounted any of the 3 so far but based on their sets and my stats there is no simple solution to them. May the hax gods shine upon you.

3. Hyper Beam is a serious option. With Choice Scarf its dubious as to whether it will KO some big name threats like Zapdos but it certainly packs a huge punch. With Tri Attack being strictly from XD it is also a lot more practical as a powerhouse move and should be considered.

4. How necessary is the scarf? The only real pokemon that the scarf helps against is the Weavile, and as jumpman pointed out earlier thats just slightly better than a 50% chance at success. I'm running modest so Choice Specs will leave me really open to some faster threats, but its possible that they will turn out more effective. Focus Sash is another option allowing you to consider Thunder Wave or an Air Slash followed by a Hyper Beam.


In conclusion, Scarfkiss is a potent threat, but it is not the pokemon that will be replacing Chomp/Mence as best Battle Hall participant.

Strategy:
Did the following: Ice, Dark, Water, Rock, Normal, Dragon, Ground, Flying and then just kind of gauged where the most potential ice and rock attacks could otherwise come from.

Never had to run into Weavile, TTar or Mamoswine during my run, so I guess I was lucky. Doing it in this order, however, puts you against your worst matchups earliest and minimizes the chances of you getting Iced out later in Battle Hall by Random Ice Dude, aside from doing Grass and Psychic later on (Ludicolo and Slowbro, respectively). Getting Water out of the way also cuts out a LOT of potential Ice Beamers/Ice types from Ice Beaming you later on. Remember that Ghost, Grass and Psychic all have fast/durable Ice attack users (including Brightpowder Frosslass who haxed my Outrage in my current hall streak, luckily following my miss up with Psychic) and that getting Dragons out of the way sooner than later is beneficial since none of your threats run +Speed natures, meaning Lati@s and Garchomp will always lose to you as long as you battle them in a lower speed tier.

I fought Steel early on for reasons that escape me now, most likely because Fire Blast is inaccurate on the Pokemon Earthquake doesn't OHKO and because a lot of them have access to Rock attacks. Fire Blast isn't guaranteed to OHKO Steelix after round 10 on run 8 or so... and while it doesn't really have anything of merit to attack back with, it's still a threat. Also, Scizor does more than 1/2 damage to you after a -1 SD with X-Scissor, which is noteworthy because the AI didn't BPunch me to death after I wiffed post-Sash breaking Fire Blast, but it just as easily could have. Also you will auto-lose if you attack physically against Scizor so don't.

I rarely/never used Stone Edge in my successful run. I used Fire Blast over Fire Fang because the lower accuracy is offset by the fact that pretty much everything that you'll be using it on has a lower SpD than Def. Usually the only times I needed to use it (Steelix, Scizor), even if it missed, I'd still be in the clear the next attack I tried.

The best suggestion I have is keeping MetalKid's calculator open to be sure whether or not your attack will OHKO your opponent's Pokemon. Which you need to do most of the time (ex: Ludicolo @ lv 44 on my 13th streak, making sure Outrage wouldn't leave me dead to Ice Beam if it survived).

I think Salamence is better than Garchomp because you have neither Sand nor Intimidate (though ultimately this was my undoing) in your favor with Garchomp and you want the setup, while CB Mence has all but the speed boost, which is only really relevant against Weavile (which should be out of contention early on). You also can be hit by Earthquake and don't resist Grass and Bug attacks... and EQ kills everything in Electric's run anyway for both dragons.

Fuck critical hits. I had this run completed, I got robbed.

quad edit: Ran damage calcs after the crit. Scyther did max/near max damage to me with the crit, as I would have survived a non-crit easily and would likely have been fine against an average-damage-low-damage crit. Thanks damage RNG!
 
tough luck kijin, but i will say this: i'm probably going to use my emerald SSS (CCC) team for the battle tower at first: cb sala/cm cune/curselax, and the only thing i'm changing on that salamence is putting outrage over rock slide (the worst move in advance). "i swore by AA" on this poke and that's not going to change

I think the set has potential to go on for a lot longer. I haven't seen many Pokemon that have a high chance of beating it yet. So far the biggest threats seem to be:
