Pokémon XY General Discussion

I never get my hopes up when it comes to news anymore. Especially about 2 months away from launch. I'll be more excited about news next month because that will be when the good stuff is announced.

Given previous trends, a Sunday leak (the 11th) would be somewhat likely, and a Monday leak very likely. I would not get my hopes up for a Saturday leak.
actually, 2 days before official release is usually standard for leaks. Usually they aren't the highest of quality or the entirity of the magazine, but a good bet nevertheless.

And something I forgot to think about was time zones. 11th here would mean the 12th there so...

I think time is very important. Even the X/Y release will affected by time.

When will the whole list of Pokemon in X/Y come out on websites like Serebii? That is the thing that confuses upon each generational release.

I remember Black and White's came out the week before the Japanese release, so we can expect around there if even.

A new Nintendo Direct has been announced (August 7th, 3PM UK Time). Will we get something on X&Y?
Almost certainly, as it's covering upcoming games for both the Wii U & 3DS and it's 2 months away.
I suspect that Europe & America's NDs will just show the recent Japanese e-shop trailer (the one with Orotto) while the Japanese one will focus on the Pokemon Game Show happening on the 17th

Is it possible that we will get the leaks before Saturday?
Anyone think there is going to be another eveelution other than Slyveon? I hope there will be at least one more.Poison or maybe Steel to match with Fairy. In the 2nd gen both the eveelutions where opposites of each other-one having bonus against the other(Espeon-Umbreon).
In the 4th gen as well glaceon had type bonus against leafeon. This shows that in the gens which introduced eevelutions was based on one having type bonus against another. So they could introduce Poison or Steel as a counter type of Sylveon.

Our only chance of new information this week will be through Nintendo Direct, which will probably just show English versions of the latest Japan stuff, or at the Worlds event in Vancouver. Since Stellar and I will both be there we will get back to you all on that one.

I think it's rather unlikely. Sylveon is featured in a lot of promotional material already. It's the "face" of the new Fairy type. Released alongside the upcoming movie, there is an Eeveelution short in which Sylveon is the star. It has gotten loads of attention from GameFreak already, it would be too dumb to go "oh, yeah, here's another one" at this point. Most likely, Sylveon was designed to showcase the Fairy type (and generate hype, let's not forget that), and it does that job perfectly while alone. It does not need a partner, it wouldn't make sense considering Sylveon's purpose in this generation. Patterns like the one you mention are fine and all, but I wouldn't put too much trust into them, especially considering the focus Sylveon has gotten.

Espeon and Umbreon represented day and night, while Leafeon and Glaceon both showcased location-based evolution (as well as adding much-requested types to the Eevee family). Most likely, Sylveon will have some sort of new way to evolve as well, in the promotion of which it will feature heavily.

*Sigh* If you think about it, the Oorotto trailer hasn't been yet shown in English yet. So they'll probably just show that. At least we'll get its English name. And most importantly, Glow Punch's English name. CoroCoro, please don't disappoint.

Getting glow punch's English name and orotto's name are the only things we can get from that trailer.Corocoro might reveal something but until then I think there is nothing to discuss.

(Irrelevant but... I'm trying to get Latios on Ruby w/o a MB-.-)

Whatever they release in the next issue shouldn't be anything more than what we have already guessed or discussed, such as Oorotto's type, Starter Evos, Glow Punch's English name, possibly even Mewtwo's form name, ability, move etc.
I'm hoping that since Mewtwo's form type hasn't been revealed, it's not Psychic/Fairy, but that type speaks Love Potion and Happiness to me. I don't even like it. I think it will be though. Look at the fact that it has a movie based around it, M2 is Psychic type, the Fairy type has been revealed, and GF and Nintendo have a weird way to come out with Legendary Pokemon types and Forms.

That's just my thought.

Starter evos almost certainly wont be revealed this month.

And there's a number of things we're likely to get this month. At the very least, 4 other new Pokemon, additional XY characters, more inkling of the plot of XY, and so on

Last month wasn't just Honedge and such

Got a good reason why Fairy may hit Dark for SE if anyone is interested.
In the 2nd gameplay trailer that was released, when Gardevoir hits Hydreigon with fairy wind. The sound is different than when Sylveon hits Haxorus, meaning it might be a x4 sound effect, meaning Fairy may hit Dark for SE. . . Give it a listen let me know what you think.

1:15 - 1:28

Someone actually did a calculation on this and in fact proved that Fairy will be (might be?) SE against Dark. I made a post about it. If you're confused about the calculations, just remember that the values are rounded off after every arithmetic function. Now that we're talking about it, someone confirm or deny this speculation (And if the calculations involved are in fact correct).

On other news. The Nintendo Direct had no information on X&Y. CoroCoro better make up for this.

As I said, the sound effect is very different from NvE, Neutral, and SE. So it very well could be. I wouldn't be happy about it. But with what I may have heard and these calcs. It just might be the case.

Since it's relevant, I'll always be curious as to why they picked now to make a new type, since they don't appear very keen on talking about the specifics that led to the conclusion that they need a new type. I think it started with the wifi tournaments from this generation. Game Freak/TPCi officials who watch the fights probably noticed how Dragon-centric the teams were; a usual team built for competition probably featured a Dragon type who could tear through teams, or was built to defeat the OU Dragon types before they could do anything nasty. Once they allowed the metagame to become apparent, they probably thought that some players were feeling forced to make certain choices for their team simply to win. They always knew that Dragon types were good, but it may not have been apparent as to HOW good they really were for a long time.
So what do they do? They prolly had a conference over how to uphold their in-game Karenisms in competitive play. This late into a highly popular franchise, they most likely wouldn't want to start reorganizing their type chart, as each type's strengths and weaknesses have been a core gameplay element for Pokémon every since they gave it some balance way back in Gen 2; two new types were created to balance out what testers may have agreed was too over-powered, and some type chart modifications between the existing types were made to better go in line with what the rest of the franchise agreed upon. That setup has been around for over a decade now, and any changes to that would be like admitting to major flaws in their game. The best solution, if they want more equality among the types, would be to make a new one.
In comes the Fairy-type, Game Freak's solution to future competitions. We know that it gives Dragons a third weakness to watch out for, but judging by the rumors, it looks like they were closely analyzing the battles, and found that virtually nobody used Poison attacks or took advantage of a Steel-type Pokémon's STAB. Giving each of them a buff by hitting Fairy types for super effective damage is like some sort of peace offering for both types that they appear to hope will make both techniques more prevalent. Being a boon to Fighting types means it's going to even out their defenses and, based on the distribution of useful Fairy-type moves, is meant to lessen the use of Fighting types trying to get a STAB boost. Finally, Psychic types have on and off viability and Fire types are barely seen at all because of the way we use and abuse Stealth Rock. Giving them each a new resistance could be taken as an intention to give them both more use; Fire types may be intended to be used as a wall for having six resistances, and Psychic types will have evened out type defenses with three weaknesses and three resistances.

I wonder if this Vancouver tournament will reassure the designer's choices for the Fairy-type's chart interactions...

They already said they made the new type to balance out dragons more. That's a perfectly sound, logical, and relevant reason so I don't know what other specifics they really need to get in to. It's no secret that dragons got even better in Gen 5 so they clearly just thought it was time to do something about it.

The holes in the type chart have existed this whole time but relatively speaking it hasn't been a super big deal. As power creep pushes forward though things would've gotten a lot worse. Better to patch it up now than let it get out of hand.

Yes, but I'm curious about why they might not want to go into specifics outside of "giving Dragon-types a new boon was our biggest concern", if being as secretive as possible is part of how they want to run with Gen 6. Underneath my type analysis/designer conspiracy theory, I'm saying that I'd appreciate an in-depth explanation of the Fairy-type's creation process, preferably in form of an interview like the one where they explained the artistic origins of the gen5 starters.

IIRC Masuda mentioned the whole Dragon balancing thing is one of the reasons. Perhaps the other main reason is purely aesthetic/to add something new? and to go along with the whole "beauty" theme in Kalos. Perhaps.

There is one thing I totally dislike about discussing the reason Fairy types were created. It was already obvious that we needed a new type. So, lets treat the situation as if it were irl:

Doctors create a new vaccine that helps fight off a certain disease/ailment. Yet, with the right dosage it can hurt you.

If the Fairy type is the "cure" to the Dragon type, are we going to forget other good Dragon "cures" such as Mamoswine, Glaceon, or Cryogonal? It's technically like fighting diseases. The Fairy type isn't much of a cure, than an option we have to defeat a "disease" aka a Dragon.

I hope this is relevant.

The distribution of Fairy type moves and whether we get any new Fairy-types that make great anti-meta Pokémon are both important known unknowns (the things that we know exist, yet we're clueless about) to figuring out the future positions of present Pokémon in OU. To piggyback off of your example, we'll need to see and discuss how important Mamoswine will be in XY if we find a new Fairy type that can also do its job just as well. If they have similar stats, will they have similar moves that could replace each other in fighting Dragon types? If there's a Fairy-type priority move, can a theoretical anti-meta wallbreaking Fairy type's defenses be what ranks it compared to Mamoswine?

If Ice-types are Ambien and Fairy-types are Xanax, either one could stave off a Dragon anxiety-attack. Both have their pros and cons, but both generally accomplish the same end.

There will indeed be a lot to consider.

I'm hoping for at least one Fairy type move to become like Aqua Jet, Quick Attack, or Ice Shard and others like that who have priority (in this case Ice Shard because of Mamoswine). We could possibly even get the next Mamoswine-like Fairy, yet that is a far guess. I hope that we don't, but considering stats, they should be better distributed if they want to "cure" the Dragons.
