Challenge Pokemon Cramorant Edition Poorlocke

Part 20. Cerulean Cave.

I go to Viridian Forest, where Cramorant uses Rest to heal. After that, I pick the 2 Ultra Balls from the PC, before entering Cerulean Cave.

Cerulean Cave is a deadly place in this game. The lowest level on a wild Pokemon is 54, already above half of my team. The highest level is an insane 91. I need to not only kill 1 of each specie of wild Mon, but also be able to survive the moves of the ones that are faster than my team.
Full list of wild Mons is: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Golbat, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

First wild Mon that appears is a Wigglytuff. I damage it with Cramorant's Drill Peck and then throw 2 Ultra Balls without success. Therefore there won,t be a catch in Cerulean Cave and I kill Wiggly with Ice Beam:

I find a Max Elixer.

Since I see stairs, I decide to kill all wild Mons of 1F:

Zapdos grows to level 55.

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_04.png

Victreebel grows to level 53.

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_06.png

Ditto transformed into Victreebel vs Articuno looked like a good idea, until it started critting with Acid repeatedly.

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_07.png

Clefable got to use Thrash with Metronome, damaging Zapdos a lot.

I cleared 1F and enter 2F. Its not much harder than 1F, since highest level Mon here is level 68 Rhydon.

A wild Electrode saves me from spending PPs:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_13.png

Gloom doesn,t get to attack:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_15.png

Neither does Dodrio:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_16.png

I find an Ultra Ball. Might use it vs Mewtwo.

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

Cramorant easily kills a Marowak:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_17.png

And a Rhyhorn:

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

I find a hidden PP Up:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_19.png

I use it on Cramorant's Surf. Then I find a non hidden Max Revive.

I see stairs, so I decide to look for the last Mons before continuing:
Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_20.png

Ok, 2F cleared. The stairs are to 1F, so for now I am safe.

I find another Ultra Ball. Close to it, there is a hidden PP Up.
I use PP Up on Cramorant's Drill Peck.
Next item is a Rare Candy.

I find another stairs, to 2F again. There I find a unit of Full Restore. I use it on Articuno, who was paralyzed.
Then a wild Electrode doesn,t let me escape and crits Cramorant with Explosion:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_23.png

I use a Rare Candy to revive Cramorant. A wild Gloom allows me to use Rest.

Next stairs are again to 1F. There I find another Max Revive.

New stairs, back to 2F. I find another Rare Candy.

More stairs, again to 1F. Next ones however are to B1F. Here all Mons are already above level 60, but maximum level is still 70. Parasect is first opponent and easiest one:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_24.png

(Took the screenshot too early, it actually dies from Fly).

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

A wild Raichu doesn,t let Articuno escape and damages him twice with Thundershock. Second hit is crit and Articuno survives in red before I switch Sandslash in and escape.
I find a Max Elixer. Then a hidden PP Up:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_25.png

Cramorant has business to do, I give him the PP Up for Drill Peck.

Close to each other, I find a Max Revive and a Ultra Ball.

Mr. Mime presents no danger to Sandslash:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_26.png

Sandslash grows to level 51. Then he crits an Arbok:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_27.png

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

I find another Ultra Ball. There will be an actual attempt to catch Mewtwo.

I encounter Mewtwo:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_28.png

However, I don,t fight him yet, there were unexplored stairs earlier. I return to them. On my way back, several Mons don,t let Sandslash escape and after Sandslash starts attacking, Chansey manages to kill him:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_29.png

Seadra finishes Chansey for some experience, which is just enough to grow to level 52. At this level, Seadra forgets Smokescreen and learns Hydro Pump.

I use Max Revive on Sandslash. I then face a Muk, who consumes last Sandslash PPs, so he has to use Struggle to finish it:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_31.png

Last Mon on this floor is Lickitung, who is critted by Surf:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_32.png

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

I now go to the deepest floor in the cave, B4F. There is something written there:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_33.png

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_34.png

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_35.png

This is the dangerous floor. All Pokemon here are between level 85 and 91. First that appears is Magmar. Cramorant takes a Flamethrower and a Fire Punch before killing it:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_36.png

Next is something easier, a Rhydon. Cramorant outspeeds and OHKOs this one:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_37.png

This was actually not needed, I already killed Rhydon earlier in the cave.

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

Cramorant has a lot of PPs yet, but no Surf ones. So, I use a Max Elixer, since Cramorant will have to attack some Mons that won,t let me escape.

Extremely dangerous Scyther appears. Fortunately, it uses SD and Agility before being 2HKOd by Drill Peck:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_38.png

Golem is an easy prey:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_40.png

Pinsir has 1 attacking move at level 90. Unfortunately it uses it vs Cramorant, Slash:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_41.png

Pinsir uses Slash vs Zapdos too, but Zapdos survives it and 2HKOs with Drill Peck + Fly:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_42.png

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Pinsir, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

I use another Rare Candy on Cramorant. Before I return to B1F, another Pinsir appears, but I manage to escape. On B1F Cramorant uses Rest on a Chansey.

Back in B4F I see a trainer at the end of the way. He will be the last one I will face, even after Mewtwo. So, for now I face the remaining broken Mons. Next one is extremely dangerous, Snorlax has enormous bulk and 3 STAB Moves. Cramorant uses Surf while Snorlax uses Harden. After another Surf, Snorlax uses Hyper Beam:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_43.png

I send Articuno. He uses Blizzard, but Snorlax uses Hyper Beam again:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_44.png

Zapdos crits Thunder to finish this battle:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_45.png

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Pinsir, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

I use another Rare Candy on Cramorant. Also a Max Revive on Articuno. Cramorant uses Rest on B1F.

Electabuzz is a Mon Cramorant can,t hope to defeat. I send Sandslash, but quickly realize he has no PPs. So I use Max Elixer. Sandslash fully walls Electabuzz, so I just use Strength until it dies. Forgot to take screenshot of the Mon though:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_46.png

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Pinsir, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

Machamp is the next one. It gets to use Submission on Cramorant, but Drill Peck easily 2HKOs:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_47.png

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Pinsir, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

Cramorant uses Rest vs Chansey before continuing.

Kangaskhan has 2 offensive STAB Moves but only gets to use Leer before being 2HKOd by Surf (second hit is crit):

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_48.png

Mons left in Cerulean Cave: Golbat, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rhydon, Raichu, Hypno, Chansey, Ditto, Dodrio, Kadabra, Marowak, Rhyhorn, Electrode, Gloom, Victreebel, Parasect, Arbok, Muk, Mr. Mime, Lickitung, Golem, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Pinsir, Electabuzz, Magmar, Machamp and Porygon.

Before finding Porygon, Cramorant manages to escape from most Mons unscratched, but a Pinsir gets to use Slash and leaves my bird with 3 HP. So, Cramorant has to heal again in B1F.
Same happens vs a Scyther.
While waiting for a Chansey or Mr. Mime to appear, Cramorant kills a Parasect with Drill Peck, which allows Zapdos to grow to level 56.
Cramorant almost faints vs an evil Kangaskhan too, forcing another heal.
Another Rest is forced by Magmar poisoning Cramorant with Smog.
And another one by another Scyther. This time Cramorant kills Chansey, allowing Articuno to grow to level 55.
Porygon continues not appearing. Cramorant kills another Chansey to heal after a battle vs Scyther, Sandslash grows to level 52.
I see that Cramorant is close to growing another level, so I let him kill a Rhydon. Level is now 65.
Right after that, a Kangaskhan kills Cramorant:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_49.png

I manage to escape from Kanga. Cramorant is revived with a Rare Candy, growing to level 66.

Another Kanga leaves Cramorant in red, another Rest has to be used.
Magmar poisoning Cramorant forces another Rest use.

Porygon finally appears. With Tri Attack + crit Psybeam, it gets to damage Cramorant a lot, but ends up falling.

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_50.png

Before facing Mewtwo, Cramorant heals again and kills a couple of Chanseys and Parasects on my way to him.

I lead Seadra vs Mewtwo, but it gets critted by Swift:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_51.png

I then send Articuno, who gets a powerful Psychic in the face before using last Blizzard.
Next Psychic is crit:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_52.png

I send Cramorant. Mewtwo uses Swift and gets Ice Beam.
Mewtwo uses Swift again and gets another Ice Beam.
After another Swift, Mewtwo is frozen:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_53.png

Battle is won here basically. Cramorant uses Rest for free.

I then send Victreebel, who uses Acid. Mewtwo is now in red but with lowered Defense, so I can,t attack again.

The first of my 4 Ultra Balls catches Mewtwo:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_54.png

With Pokemon at the lowest floor being so strong, I expect the only trainer there to be powerful too. So, RIP Seadra, Mewtwo is the new member of the team:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_55.png

What to say here, Mewtwo is broken. Access to Recover is huge. I teach Mewtwo Thunder instead of Barrier.

Of course, I need Mewtwo to heal the freeze. A wild Vulpix allows me to do that:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_56.png

Mewtwo uses Recover twice in Viridian Forest.

I use a Max Revive on Articuno and go back to Cerulean Cave.

In Cerulean Cave, Mewtwo spends all Swift PPs on wild Chanseys. From this, Victreebel grows to level 54.

I teach Articuno Sky Attack instead of Peck. Then I start spending all PPs vs wild Chanseys and Parasects. After PPs finish, I use a Max Elixer. Cramorant grows to level 67.
The last Max Elixer is reserved for Cramorant. He too spends all his PPs, allowing Articuno to grow to level 56, Mewtwo to 71, himself to 68 and Sandslash to 53.

I put Mewtwo as lead in B4F, since he is faster than Cramorant. This allows me to escape from all wild Mons and reach the final trainer, who is non other than...

I lead with Cramorant and quickly see I will need Mewtwo in this battle. Oak leads with a level 85 Gengar.

I switch the 15 HP Zapdos in. Since Cramorant was asleep, Gengar tried to use Dream Eater.
Gengar kills Zapdos with Confuse Ray:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_95.png

I send Mewtwo. He is faster than Gengar but not strong enough to OHKO with Psychic. Gengar gets to use Confuse Ray.
Mewtwo damages himself. Gengar tries to use Confuse Ray again.
Mewtwo kills Gengar:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_96.png

Oak sends a Tauros. Mewtwo hits himself and takes a Take Down, surviving in red.
Mewtwo uses Recover, but Tauros crits with Take Down:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_97.png

I send Cramorant. Tauros uses Take Down again and survives Surf.

I switch Articuno in, avoiding Leer.
Tauros suicides with Take Down:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_98.png

Oak sends an Exeggutor. Articuno freezes it with Blizzard:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_99.png

This gives me big advantage. I send Cramorant.
Cramorant uses Rest for free.
I then use my last Max Revive on Mewtwo.
Cramorant finishes Egg with Drill Peck:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_100.png

Level 89 Arcanine is next. It uses Take Down and survives Surf.

I switch Mewtwo into next Take Down.
Mewtwo uses Recover for free, Arcanine tries Roar.
Mewtwo finishes Arcanine with crit Psychic:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_101.png

Level 90 Gyarados time. Mewtwo OHKOs it with Thunder:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_102.png

Cramorant grows to level 69. Last is a level 92 Dragonite.
Mewtwo uses Psychic and survives Hyper Beam.
Mewtwo uses Recover on the recharge turn.
Mewtwo uses Psychic again and barely survives Hyper Beam.
Battle finishes next turn.

This is how my team survived the battle:

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_115.png

By my own rules, there was only one way of winning this battle without Mewtwo: using Double Team TM on Cramorant, which probably would have been even more dirty than using Mewtwo.

I use one of my 2 last Rare Candies on Zapdos to revive it. It isn,t needed, since the game is pretty much finished. What is at the new houses of Celadon and Saffron Cities though?

Celadon one is a TM Shop:

The Saffron House is some shady business that sells every item that is not a TM (including PP Ups and Rare Candies):

Pokemon - Cramorant Version (UE) [C][!] (patched)_123.png

So, this is how the game ends. I use my last Rare Candy on Articuno, just to have it on par with Zapdos.

This was a cool way of playing Pokemon "Yellow" for first time. It wasn,t overall as hard as the usual Nuzlockes I do, but still had some dramatic moments. Hopefully Cram-o-dev continues making games with whacky Mons from future generations introduced in them.

Final team:

Congratulations! I'm impressed you managed to beat Prof Oak (although I guess having Mewtwo really helps against him). I don't think I could have managed to complete a successful poorlocke challenge myself, so it's really great to see someone play my hack and not only finish it, but do so under such a challenge.

You've pretty much experienced all my hack has to offer. I'm currently almost finished working on an update for it which will expand the movesets of every Pokemon, letting them learn more moves by level up and TM, some of which they've never been able to learn at all. A few other things like trainer parties and wild Pokemon have been adjusted, some more bugs fixed (like the 1/256 accuracy glitch) and some new minor rewards are available when you beat the game and Prof Oak.

Again, thank you very much for playing my hack! The thread was a joy to read from beginning to end. My project was a lot of work to make, so hearing your positive words about it makes it all worth it. If I ever do make another rom hack, it would probably be of Crystal, and it would definitely have some more whackiness.
