Pokemon Tabletop United: The definitive pen and paper roleplaying game of Pokemon
Hi, folks. This is the (un)official Smogon thread for PTU: Pokemon Tabletop United. I recently stumbled across this game when a friend showed it to me, and I've been itching to play/host a game.

This game can be played in a more 'traditional' Pokemon LEague adventure, or any setting you desire! The system is malleable, and carries no setting 'baggage'.

Rules are right here. Don't worry, the download won't crash your computer!

Another neat aspect is that Trainers themselves ahve stats, and could even participate in battle given the right investments! Yes, Black Belt is a very possible concept.

Let's go into the basics.

For Trainers, there are three Attributes: Body, Mind and Spirit. Body is how physically fit you are, Mind is your intellect, and Spirit is your force of personality. The scores you give these Attributes will help determine your abilities in the game, such as Skills.

However, there are also Combat Stats, just like in the video games! These should need no introduction - of course, when starting out, Trainers have lower combat capabilities than the average Pokemon. Yes, Pokemon can attack Trainers and vice versa. Watch out!

Edges are representing your training and development as you progress. You start with three, and gain one with each Trainer Level you achieve. Think of them as Feats, for you DnD/PF buffs.

Features are sort of like Super-Feats. You gain them at every odd level, and start with 3. These help you unlock classes, and use class features.

Speaking of Classes, they don't work like you'd typically expect in other games. Each Class is merely a collection of Features, and you gain them as you see fit. You can only have Four Classes, though, so keep that in mind!

Those are the basics to Trainers. Pokemon are a different sort - a tad too complex to exlain in a forum post.

I will, however, go into a list of Core Classes!

Ace Trainer
Athlete
Capture Specialist
Cheerleader
Chef
Coordinator
Dancer
Enduring Soul
Fashionista
Hatcher
Hobbyist
Hunter
Juggler
Lasher
Martial Artist
Mastermind
Medic
Mentor
Musician
Photographer
Researcher
Rider
Rogue
Roughneck
Scientist
Soldier
Stat Ace
Survivalist
Type Ace
Underdog

SUPERNATURAL CLASSES
Aura Guardian
Channeler
Disciple
Medium
Ninja
Clairvoyant
Telekinetic
Telepath
Warper

If you have interest, go to the synirc channels #flamel and #oi - there are plenty of other tabletop and Pokemon enthusiasts there, respectively!

Oh, and a small note: IF this takes off the ground, I was hoping to set up a minicampaign where everyone gets a level 10 Pokemon of their choice. Think of adventures you'd like to go on!

And there's also an irc chan on ANOTHER NETWORK (sospooky). #PokemonTabletop on irc.rizon.net is the chan the creators use, and they can help you more than I can. Btw, the person who showed me this is user: StarmanXL . Pls direct questions to him, should I not be around, or in general.

Yeah, so I'm really interested in playing this. I'll take a closer look at the rules when I get some free time, but as far as I know it's similar enough to D&D so we can get right into it. I'm guessing you'll be hosting/GMing?

If we're playing it over IRC best to organize here so we can all decide on a good time to meet up. It also might be good to make a separate channel for the Orange Islands game rather than cluttering up #oi.

Personally Fridays are the best for me but really I can do it any evening EST Sunday-Friday. Hopefully we get more people involved though, I'd love to play with all the good people of OI.

I've some experience with PTU though I've not actually hosted a normal game of it, per se. Regardless, I would be willing to run a one-session game for people sometime, though sadly I don't have the time or energy to do a full campaign.

This actually intrigues me. I'll need to figure it out but it sounds fun! I'm just disappointed there's no rich boy class

This seems interesting, although the 469 page rules list is probably a bit of a turn-off. I'd be willing to participate (assuming I can make time and I like the background of the mini-campaign, the former of which being a big assumption).

I really love RPGs of this sort so I may give this a go (That being said I haven't played a ton of them so it should be fun). I don't have time right now to read through nearly 500 pages but this has certainly piqued my interest. I'll see if I can't find the time and willpower to read this massive rule book.

A few weeks ago I ran a one-shot session of PTU with my D&D group and my number one piece of advice is to make sure everyone has at least skimmed the combat section of the player's handbook, because battles can end up really lengthy if you're not prepared.
It's a fun format - a couple of players trolled the session (split the party immediately and attacked random NPCs) but the time we spent actually RPing and questing was well worth it.

I haven't had as much of a look at Pokemon Tabletop Adventures, but from what I've read it's a lot more similar to D&D and so might be a bit easier for a cheeky one-shot?

Ok this is just me being lazy here. But can you give a short rundown of the game?
If you can post a replay (or youtube vid showing the game in action) that would be even better

The game is a traditional roleplaying game like D&D as far as I know. Since we're playing online we'll probably be playing through text in an IRC chatroom so there are no replays or graphics or anything like that. Logs would be helpful I guess.

UllarWarlord maybe you should post a more in-depth introduction for people who aren't really familiar with roleplaying games. Most people are kinda concerned with the huge rulebook too so if you could give us the abridged version or something that'd be swell. Maybe a run-down of game mechanics, like how to actually play, how battles are done, the role of the GM, etc.

1. Most of the rule book is Moves/Abilities, don't worry!

2. Good idea Hula, will do as soon as I get home.

Okay...I've read a good portion of the guide, and honestly it does a much better job of introduction than I ever could.

I'm gonna say Chapter 2: Character Creation and Chapter 5: Pokemon are gonna be the essential reads, or at least glance through them. Chapter 7 is extremely important as well, especially the demo of combat!

Just come in with an idea of what you want to build, and I'll help you. If at all possible, I'd like to get a game set up this Friday.

EDIT: Found a video play-through series! Right here is where you can check it out.

I'm toying with the idea of hosting an incredibly shoddy oneshot of my own. Accepting any and all comers!

You'd have a level 1 Trainer with 2 level 10 Pokemon (each with 1 egg move), approved by myself, jsyk

EDIT: the game will happen next week, and I'd honestly prefer no more than 4 people

The plot: you're doing an errand for Professor Elm, the leading scientist on Evolution. He has sent you all to Mr. Pokemon to procure a new finding from him. Something about a breakthrough in Pokemon revivificafion...

Hit me up on irc if interested!

I'm tentatively in, Sundays can be really busy for me but I'll try to show up if possible. No promises though.

So this is like DnD sorta kinda, right? Sounds interesting, I might join in if I can keep myself concentrated long enough to read through the rules.
