Poliwrath [QC:1/3]

Conni

katharsis
[OVERVIEW]

  • Has a great offensive typing as it can hit common Normal-, Rock-, Ground-, Dark-, and Fire-types such as Audino, Carracosta, Mudsdale, Alolan Ratticate, and Pyroar super effectively
  • Poliwrath also has an efficient defensive typing as well, resisting common Dark-, Fire-, and Rock-type moves while also being completely immune to Water-type moves thanks to Water Absorb which makes it able to switch into most of these types and check the opposing Pokemon that have them such as Carracosta and Combusken
  • Has adequate well rounded stats as it has a good Attack stat, usable Speed tier, reasonable bulk, and a moderate Special Attack
  • Has an interesting offensive movepool which makes it one of the best users of Focus Punch in PU while also having access to great special moves while lacking many useful physical moves which is unfitting in comparison to its stats
  • Leftovers and a great ability in Water Absorb are Poliwrath's only means of recovery which means aside from chip healing and switching into Water-type moves, Poliwrath otherwise on clerics and Wish support to help maintain its health
  • Unlike its rather good offensive typing, Poliwrath can be easily targeted by powerful and common Grass-, Psychic-, Flying-, and Electric-types such as Alolan Exeggutor, Mesprit, Articuno, and Alolan Raichu

name: Special Attacker
move 1: Scald / Hydro Pump

nature: Modest
evs: 96 HP / 252 SpA / 160 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Scald allows Poliwrath to do adequately powerful super effective STAB damage to Pokemon such as Regirock and Pyroar while also potentially crippling physical attackers with a burn
  • Hydro Pump can be used as a less accurate but more powerful alternative that hits Pokemon that are neutral to it relatively well
  • Focus Blast allows Poliwrath to do heavy Fighting-type STAB damage to Pokemon such as Aggron and Alolan Ratticate
  • Substitute allows Poliwrath to deal more damage safely as Substitute prevents it from being worn down as easily by status moves such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp, Pokemon it can set up Substitute reliably against include Ferroseed and Gourgiest-XL
  • Toxic allows Poliwrath to cripple Pokemon that check it or any Pokemon generally such as Gastrodon and Gourgiest-XL to deplete their longevity and allow them to become vulnerable to Focus Punch or Poliwrath's teammates
  • Encore can be used alternatively to target slower Pokemon that may not be deterred by Toxic and use the opportunity to set up Substitute much safer thanks to locking the target in a resisted or immune move

Set Details
========

  • Leftovers and Water Absorb are Poliwrath's only means of recovery which prevents it from being worn down as easily while also giving it comfortability in switching into Water-type moves
  • A Modest nature and 252 SpA EVs allow it to deal significant special damage to physically bulky Pokemon who can switch into Poliwrath's other set or generally any Pokemon that Poliwrath can deal with
  • Poliwrath's investment in HP allows to become relatively bulkier and tank moves much more reliably
  • Poliwrath's 160 Spe EVs allow it to have a moderate speed tier which allows it to outspeed Pokemon it can check such as Aurorus
Usage Tips
========

  • Poliwrath should find safe opportunities to set up Substitute so that it can deal great damage without taking much back or prevent itself from being worn down by status, such opportunities include switching into Water-type moves and healing from Pokemon it takes no damage from otherwise such as Gastrodon
  • Toxic should be used mainly on Pokemon on the switch to cripple their longevity and render them vulnerable to Poliwrath and its teammates later in the game
  • Poliwrath should avoid status moves such as Toxic and Taunt as it cripples its longevity and ability to use the second half of its moveset, respectively, it is also significantly worn down by Toxic and its Leftovers cannot atone for it
  • Poliwrath could sham the SubPunch set and surprise physically bulky Pokemon with powerful special attacks to KO them or throw them off guard and use the opportunity to setup Substitute if they switch
  • Coverage moves wear down Poliwrath rather easily due to its lack of great recovery options therefore it should be cautious when switching in or dealing with Pokemon it checks
Team Options
========

  • Alolan Exeggutor and Gourgeist among a lot of other Grass-types threaten Poliwrath therefore Pokemon such as Abomasnow and Weezing and deal with them while Poliwrath can tank Fire-types that threaten Abomasnow such as Pyroar while also appreciating Skuntank's ability to remove entry hazards and check Psychic-types such as Alolan Raichu
  • Speaking of abilities to remove entry hazards, Togetic and Hitmonchan prove to be good teammates as they can remove entry hazards that wear down Poliwrath while entry hazard setters such as Regirock and Crustle can aid Poliwrath in its offensive endeavors
  • Specially bulky Pokemon, especially those that resist Poliwrath's moves such as Musharna and Clefairy should be taken care of by Pokemon such as Absol and Aggron which make great teammates as they can check Musharana and Clefairy and other specially bulk Pokemon with powerful physical attacks
  • Pokemon that can take status moves such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp that threaten Poliwrath such as Ferroseed and Clefairy, respectively, can assist Poliwrath from being crippled or unable to perform its key actions during a match, Mesprit is also a nice partner as it can use Healing Wish in case Poliwrath is crippled or low on HP but is still needed
  • VoltTurn support from the likes of Mesprit and Eelektross is useful to Poliwrath as it provides safe opportunities for it to switch in and set up Substitute to allow it to sweep and deal offensive damage more safely

Moves
========

  • Focus Punch is the centerpoint of this set which can be used in conjunction with Substitute after it is used so Poliwrath can do heavy STAB damage to every Pokemon that doesn't resist it and can be used to check and OHKO Pokemon such as Carracosta and Pyroar
  • Waterfall is another STAB move Poliwrath can use to check Pokemon such as Lycanroc and Combusken as it does adequate damage and can hit Pokemon more easily than Focus Punch, it also serves as a notable countermeasure to Clefairy
  • Substitute is also a crucial part of this set as Poliwrath relies on it to land Focus Punch safely as without it, Poliwrath would be unable to use it. It also allows it to be protected from status moves and grants it an advantage against checks if they switch in on Poliwrath if Substitute is up as they may be threatened by Focus Punch
  • Toxic can be used to wear down opposing Pokemon, especially its checks such as Gourgiest and Grandbull, that switch into Poliwrath and is best used when being protected by Substitute or on Pokemon on the switch. Toxic can also cripple the longevity of setup sweepers such as Lilligant and leave them vulnerable to Focus Punch or Poliwrath's teammates
Set Details
========

  • Poliwrath's EV investments give it sufficient bulk, Attack, and a rather moderate Speed tier so it can tank and hit harder while outspeeding at least some of its checks such as Aurorus
  • Leftovers and Water Absorb are the preferred item and ability as they are Poliwrath's only methods of recovery and moderately reliable as this means Poliwrath can avoid being worn down as quickly with Leftovers intact while also being able to comfortably switch into predicted Water-type moves to heal although it has to be wary of coverage moves
  • An Adamant nature further boosts Poliwrath's ability to deal a lot of damage with its already good Attack stat and EV investments

Usage Tips
========

  • Poliwrath should take advantage of situations such as switching into a Pokemon it takes no damage from such as a Water-type like Carracosta and then setting up Substitute to use Focus Punch successfully each time
  • Poliwrath should use Toxic on Pokemon that check it on the switch so that they can be worn down and eliminated quickly, Toxic can generally be used on any Pokemon that is crippled by it to wear them down if Poliwrath has the chance to do so
  • Since Substitute takes Poliwrath's HP away, it is easily worn down with Leftovers unable to compensate fully for the HP loss, which means Poliwrath should find possibilities to switch into Water-type moves to heal thanks to its ability, but needs to be careful of super effective coverage
  • Poliwrath should generally avoid status moves such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp as it cripples Poliwrath's longevity, ability to do heavy damage and ability to use Substitute and Toxic, respectively, although setting up Substitute before protects it from these moves
  • Super effective coverage moves can wear Poliwrath down relatively easy and it should be generally careful of these moves when switching in, it should also avoid its checks such as Lilligant as well as most of them either resist all of its moves or outspeed it and can KO it easily especially if Substitute is not up so the best time for Poliwrath to sweep with Focus Punch is when its checks such as Gourgeist are eliminated

Team Options
========

  • Pokemon that do not mind status moves like Toxic and Will-O-Wisp such as Clefairy make good teammates as it can switch into these respective moves that threaten Poliwrath and be unaffected
  • Other Pokemon that can resist and or can tank many Focus Punches and Waterfalls such as Weezing and Musharna are trouble for Poliwrath so Pokemon such as Mesprit and Oricorio-G can take them out easily
  • VoltTurn support from the likes of Eelektross and Mesprit help Poliwrath obtain safer opportunities to set up Substitute and start sweeping with Focus Punch, these two also check Grass-types as well
  • Entry hazard support in terms of setting and removing is appreciated as it helps Poliwrath KO Pokemon with Focus Punch easier while also preventing it from being worn down more easily, Pokemon that can set entry hazards include Aggron and Leavanny, who also check Fairy- and Grass-types, respectively; and Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and the aforementioned Skuntank

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • A Waterium Z or Fightinium Z can be utilized to break past physical or special walls as appropriate for each set so that it can catch the walls off guard and render them vulnerable to Poliwrath and its teammates afterwards although Poliwrath depends on its Leftovers more due to not having access to a reliable recovery option otherwise
  • Ice Beam and Vacuum Wave can be run instead of Substitute and Toxic on Poliwrath's Special Attacker set to make it an All-Out-Attacker and have access to a coverage move that can hit Grass-types for siginificant damage while also having access to priority which can finish weakened Pokemon, although Toxic and Substitute allow Poliwrath to go on the offense more efficiently and safely while its teammates can take care of its checks and have access to priority instead
  • A Belly Drum set can be utilized alongside Swift Swim or Water Absorb to allow Poliwrath to become a win con to rain teams, it also acts a lure to Ferroseed as it is now able to take it out with relative ease thanks to an insane boost in Attack with powerful STAB moves
  • A Physically Defensive set can also be considered as an alternative as the combination of RestTalk, Poliwrath's adequate bulk, and Scald and Circle Throw allow it to become a more defensively orientated Pokemon that can wear down its checks much efficiently for its teammates rather than take them out by itself
Checks and Counters
===================
**Grass-types**: Gourgeist is Poliwrath's greatest check as it can take as many Waterfalls and Scalds while being immune to Focus Punch and Focus Blast which means it can mind all of Poliwrath's moves except for Toxic and the rare Ice Beam and retaliate with a super effective Seed Bomb. Other powerful Grass-types such as Alolan Exeggutor and a boosted Lilligant can either tank a move or outspeed Poliwrath and OHKO it with super effective STAB moves, although most have to watch out for Focus Blast or Focus Punch on the switch as it could potentially OHKO them.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Pokemon such as Musharna, Clefairy, and Granbull can take Poliwrath's moves with ease depending on the set while retaliating with super effective STAB or coverage moves that could KO it or use other moves such as Seismic Toss from Clefairy to wear it down or use status such as burn to cripple it while Poliwrath can do nothing but switch out or use Toxic which may be threatening. Bulky Mesprit is also one of Poliwrath's best checks as it can tank all of its moves and retaliate with Psychic or possibly force a switch and set up Stealth Rock during that time thus making it an efficient check to both of Poliwrath's main sets.

**Faster and Powerful Pokemon**: Pokemon that can outspeed Poliwrath can OHKO it immediately with powerful moves although they can only do so if Substitute isn't out as most will be heavily damaged if not KOed by Focus Punch, Focus Blast, or the uncommon Hydro Pump. Examples of these fast heavy hitters include Oricorio-G, Swanna, Jynx, and Alolan Raichu, although the latter cannot take too much of Poliwrath's moves.

[OVERVIEW]

  • Has a great offensive typing as it can hit common Normal-, Rock-, Ground-, Dark-, and Fire-types such as Audino, Carracosta, Mudsdale, Alolan Ratticate, and Pyroar super effectively
  • Has adequate well rounded stats as it has a good Attack stat, decent Speed tier (Its speed tier isnt that decent. It is outsped by mons like Raticate-Alola and Absol, which speed tiers are considered "decent". I prefer usable), reasonable bulk, and a moderate Special Attack
  • Has an interesting offensive movepool which makes it one of the best users of Focus Punch in PU while also having access to great special moves while lacking many useful physical moves which is unfitting in comparison to its stats (This can go into another bullet point regarding lack of good physical movepool)
  • Mention something positive about Water Absorb.
  • Leftovers and Water Absorb are Poliwrath's only means of recovery which leaves the maintenance of its longevity in the hands of cleric teammates, otherwise it can worn down rather easily by threatening coverage moves from Pokemon it checks, which is one of Poliwrath's big problems
  • Unlike its rather good offensive typing, Poliwrath can be easily targeted by powerful and common Grass-, Psychic-, Flying-, and Electric-types such as Alolan Exeggutor, Mesprit, Articuno, and Alolan Raichu

Set Details
========

  • Poliwrath's EV investments give it sufficient bulk, Attack, and a rather moderate Speed tier so it can tank and hit harder while outspeeding at least some of its checks such as Lurantis and Musharna (But it does nothing to Musharna even after outspeeding and it always outspeeds Mush anyways)
  • Leftovers and Water Absorb are Poliwrath's only methods of recovery and moderately reliable as this means Poliwrath can avoid being worn down as quickly with Leftovers intact while also being able to comfortably switch into predicted Water-type moves to heal although it has to be wary of coverage moves (Separate these into 2 different points talking about why Water Absorb is the preferred ability and why Leftovers is the preferred item)
  • An Adamant nature further boosts Poliwrath's ability to deal a lot of physical damage ("Physical damage" is redundant. We know it is invested into Attack, which is physical) with its already good Attack stat and EVs (EV investment sounds better)

Usage Tips
========

  • Poliwrath should take advantage of situations such as switching into a Pokemon it takes no damage from such as a Water-type without coverage such as Carracosta (Costa's coverage can't harm Wrath too much anyways) and then setting up Substitute to use Focus Punch successfully each time
  • Poliwrath should use Toxic on Pokemon that check it on the switch so that they can be worn down and eliminated quickly, Toxic can generally be used on any Pokemon that is crippled by it to wear them down if Poliwrath has the chance to do so
  • Since Substitute takes Poliwrath's HP away, it is easily worn down with Leftovers unable to compensate fully for the HP loss, which means Poliwrath should find possibilities to switch into Water-type moves to heal thanks to its ability, but needs to be careful of coverage (From what? Super-effective coverage causes trouble)
  • Poliwrath should generally avoid status moves such as Toxic, Will-O-Wisp, and Taunt as it cripples Poliwrath's longevity, ability to do heavy damage and ability to use Substitute and Toxic, respectively, although setting up Substitute before should (It does protect you from status if it's up, not should) protect it from these moves
  • Super effective coverage moves can wear Poliwrath down relatively easy and it should be generally careful of these moves when switching in, it should also avoid its checks (Examples) as well as most of them either resist all of its moves or outspeed it and can KO it easily especially if Substitute is not up so the best time for Poliwrath to sweep with Focus Punch is when its checks are eliminated (Examples are needed here)

Team Options
========

  • Pokemon that do not mind status moves such as Toxic, Will-O-Wisp, and Taunt such as Skuntank, Pyroar, and Aurorus make good teammates as they can all switch into these respective moves that threaten Poliwrath while also having good synergy with Poliwrath as they take out troublesome Grass-types such as Lilligant and Gourgeist, the latter being SubPunch Poliwrath's best check
  • Other Pokemon that can resist and or can tank many Focus Punches and Waterfalls such as Granbull and Musharna are trouble for Poliwrath so Pokemon such as Weezing and Oricorio-G can take them out easily, Weezing especially can also provide entry hazard support for Poliwrath to make its job easier while switching into Toxic and Will-O-Wisp with ease
  • VoltTurn support from the likes of Rotom-F and Chatot (Mesprit, Togedemaru or Primeape are much better examples than Chatot) help Poliwrath obtain safer opportunities to set up Substitute and start sweeping with Focus Punch, these two also check Grass-types as well
  • Entry hazard support in terms of setting and removing is appreciated as it helps Poliwrath KO Pokemon with Focus Punch either (Assuming easier instead of either) while also preventing it from being worn down more easily, Pokemon that can set entry hazards include Aggron and Leavanny, who also check Fairy- and Grass-types, respectively; and Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and the aforementioned Skuntank

  • A Modest nature and 252 SpA EVs allow it to deal powerful (Bit of an exaggeration, we have significantly stronger special wallbreakers in the tier) special damage to physically bulky Pokemon who can switch into Poliwrath's other set or generally any Pokemon that Poliwrath can deal with
  • Poliwrath's other EVs (Poliwrath's investment in HP allow to become more bulky *mention something on the lines of what attacks it can take better or something*) allow it to become decently bulky and have a moderate Speed tier (What does it outspeed with the speed EVS?)
Usage Tips

  • Poliwrath should find safe opportunities to set up Substitute so that it can sweep or prevent itself from being worn down, such opportunities include switching into Water-type moves and healing from Pokemon it takes no damage from otherwise such as Gastrodon

  • Poliwrath's checks should be taken care of before Poliwrath can start doing damage to avoid taking threatening hits which can hinder its ability to become a specially offensive weapon
  • Coverage moves wear down Poliwrath rather easily due to its lack of great recovery options therefore it should be cautious when switching in or dealing with Pokemon it checks (Like?)

  • Alolan Exeggutor and Gourgeist among a lot of other Grass-types threaten Poliwrath therefore Pokemon such as Abomasnow and Skuntank and deal with them while Poliwrath can tank Fire-types that threaten Abomasnow (Examples?) while also appreciating Skuntank's ability to remove entry hazards and check Psychic-types (Examples again)
  • Speaking of abilities to remove entry hazards, Skuntank and Hitmonchan prove to be good teammates as they can remove entry hazards that wear down Poliwrath while entry hazard setters such as Torterra and Shuckle (More viable hazard setters than Shuckle and Regirock or Mesprit) can aid Poliwrath in its offensive endeavors
  • Specially bulky Pokemon, especially those that resist Poliwrath's moves such as Musharna and Clefairy should be taken care of by Pokemon such as Absol and Aggron which make great teammates (Explain why they make good teammates. **Other bulky Pokemon that resist Poliwrath's moves (Bulky Pokemon work better. You can just mention the bulky mons that resist in the description. Doesn't fit into the title well)**: Pokemon such as Musharna, Clefairy, and Granbull can take Poliwrath's moves with ease depending on the set while retaliating with super effective STAB or coverage moves that could KO it or use other moves such as Seismic Toss from Clefairy to wear it down or use status such as burn to cripple it while Poliwrath can do nothing but switch out or use Toxic which may be threatening.

It's fine that you're making a point about how its typing makes it an offensive threat, but I think in general it's also a good idea for the overview to talk more about how it helps it out defensively and what it allows it check, as the typing also comes with a nice set of resistances that allows it to check a variety of metagame threats like costa, kingler, lycanroc, kabu, combusken, pinsir, etc. the list is fairly expansive. also, lump in water absorb's utility somewhere while you're going at this list (there's no talk about it apart from how poliwrath can use it to recover in a later bullet point, rather than what it helps it check), since that's part of what allows it to check certain threats

========

  • Focus Punch is the centerpoint of this set which can be used in conjunction with Substitute after it is used so Poliwrath can do heavy STAB damage to every Pokemon that doesn't resist it and can be used to check and OHKO Pokemon such as Carracosta and Pyroar
  • Waterfall is another STAB move Poliwrath can use to check Pokemon such as Lycanroc and Combusken as it does adequate damage and can hit Pokemon more easily than Focus Punch i suppose it probably wouldn't hurt to also talk about how it does adequate damage to clef, since that a relevant point about this set that the special set lacks
  • Toxic can be used to wear down opposing Pokemon, especially its checks (such as?), that switch into Poliwrath and is best used when being protected by Substitute or on Pokemon on the switch. Toxic can also cripple the longevity of setup sweepers and leave them vulnerable to Focus Punch or Poliwrath's teammates
Set Details
========

  • Poliwrath's EV investments give it sufficient bulk, Attack, and a rather moderate Speed tier so it can tank and hit harder while outspeeding at least some of its checks such as Lurantis (just mention Aurorus with the updated spread)

Usage Tips
========

  • Poliwrath should generally avoid status moves such as Toxic, Will-O-Wisp, and Taunt as it cripples Poliwrath's longevity, ability to do heavy damage and ability to use Substitute and Toxic, respectively, although setting up Substitute before protects it from these moves

========

  • Pokemon that do not mind status moves such as Toxic, Will-O-Wisp, and Taunt (this is not a very reliable response to Poliwrath) such as Skuntank, Pyroar, and Aurorus (worth noting that these pokemon while good teammates, are not really status (mainly toxic) absorbers in the traditional sense, so something like clef as a teammate would cover that part well enough) make good teammates as they can all switch into these respective moves that threaten Poliwrath while also having good synergy with Poliwrath as they take out troublesome Grass-types such as Lilligant and Gourgeist, the latter being SubPunch Poliwrath's best check
  • Other Pokemon that can resist and or can tank many Focus Punches and Waterfalls such as Granbull (i wouldn't regard something like granbull as relevant. mentioning something like Weezing, bulky mesprit, or sableye could work tho) and Musharna are trouble for Poliwrath so Pokemon such as Weezing and Oricorio-G can take them out easily, Weezing especially can also provide entry hazard support for Poliwrath to make its job easier while switching into Toxic and Will-O-Wisp with ease
  • VoltTurn support from the likes of Rotom-F (not really what i'd call relevant compared to eelektross, so i'd just mention this one instead) and Mesprit help Poliwrath obtain safer opportunities to set up Substitute and start sweeping with Focus Punch, these two also check Grass-types as well
  • Entry hazard support in terms of setting and removing is appreciated as it helps Poliwrath KO Pokemon with Focus Punch easier while also preventing it from being worn down more easily, Pokemon that can set entry hazards include Aggron and Leavanny, who also check Fairy- and Grass-types, respectively; and Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and the aforementioned Skuntank

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Substitute allows Poliwrath to sweep Not really a sweeper or deal more damage safely as Substitute prevents it from being worn down as easily by status moves such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp Mention some Pokemon it can reliably sub up vs, like ferroseed, gourgeist-xl, and some stuff it may force out
  • Toxic allows Poliwrath to cripple Pokemon that check on it Mention some examples, stuff like Lanturn, Gastrodon, Gourgeist-XL, etc. are optimal targets for Toxic or any Pokemon generally to deplete their longevity and allow them to become vulnerable to Focus Punch or Poliwrath's teammates

Set Details
========

  • Leftovers and Water Absorb are Poliwrath's only means of recovery which prevents it from being worn down as easily while also giving it comfortability in switching into Water-type moves
  • A Modest nature and 252 SpA EVs allow it to deal significant special damage to physically bulky Pokemon who can switch into Poliwrath's other set or generally any Pokemon that Poliwrath can deal with
  • Poliwrath's investment in HP allows to become relatively bulkier and tank moves such as Zing Zap from Togedemaru and Sludge Wave from Haunter (These aren't good examples since wrath doesn't check them, nor do you honestly need to talk about examples in this section in general unless the ev spread allows you to avoid some sort of 2hko or 3hko from some relevant threat or w/e)
  • Poliwrath's 160 Spe EVs allow it to have a moderate speed tier which allows it to outspeed Pokemon it can check such as Komala and Regirock (these Pokemon's standard sets are already slower. The main thing that warrants a mention is Aurorus)
Usage Tips
========

  • Poliwrath should find safe opportunities to set up Substitute so that it can sweep (uh, again with the sweeping point, not how it really functions) or prevent itself from being worn down (by this i'm guessing you mean avoiding possible status), such opportunities include switching into Water-type moves and healing from Pokemon it takes no damage from otherwise such as Gastrodon
  • Poliwrath's checks should be taken care of before Poliwrath can start doing damage to avoid taking threatening hits which can hinder its ability to become a specially offensive weapon (this is sort of written a bit weird and is overly generic with a lot of fluff since you've already addressed in an earlier point that poli should be crippling checks with Toxic if applicable and then have its teammates check it)
  • Coverage moves wear down Poliwrath rather easily due to its lack of great recovery options therefore it should be cautious when switching in or dealing with Pokemon it checks
Team Options
========

  • Alolan Exeggutor and Gourgeist among a lot of other Grass-types threaten Poliwrath therefore Pokemon such as Abomasnow and Skuntank and deal with them while Poliwrath can tank Fire-types that threaten Abomasnow such as Pyroar while also appreciating Skuntank's ability to remove entry hazards and check Psychic-types such as Alolan Raichu
  • Speaking of abilities to remove entry hazards, Skuntank and Hitmonchan prove to be good teammates as they can remove entry hazards that wear down Poliwrath while entry hazard setters such as Regirock and Mesprit can aid Poliwrath in its offensive endeavors
  • Pokemon that can take status moves such as Toxic and Taunt that threaten Poliwrath such as Ferroseed and Primeape, respectively, can assist Poliwrath from being crippled or unable to perform its key actions during a match (last point is a bit generic, and again Taunt doesn't really cripple Poliwrath. it would help to mention status absorbers like type: null and the like, and maybe some healing wish support from Mesprit could work if Poliwrath is significantly weakened and is still needed healthy to check stuff)
  • VoltTurn support from the likes of Mesprit and Eelektross is useful to Poliwrath as it provides safe opportunities for it to switch in and set up Substitute to allow it to sweep and deal offensive damage more safely
In general you should try to add a little more variety when mentioning good teammates, since you have mentioned Mesprit and Skuntank quite a bit for team options on both sets and it would help to mix it up a bit with other relevant Pokemon that can fulfill certain roles you're trying to describe as helpful for Poliwrath.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Phys Def set with Scald / Circle Throw / Rest / Sleep Talk
  • Belly Drum sets, particularly for rain teams that appreciate a win con that can also function as a lure to Ferroseed
Checks and Counters
===================

(Add Mesprit somewhere as it's a pretty prominent and prevalent check to both sets)

Examples of these fast heavy hitters include Oricorio-G, Swanna, Beheeyem (this isn't faster nor a very relevant mention. i would recommend using an example like Jynx or Articuno), and Alolan Raichu, although the latter cannot take too much of Poliwrath's moves.
megazard edit: yes on increasing speed, encore should stay in moves, no on changing set order

Remember that, even though this is written in point form, the points should still be complete sentences (periods, not starting in stuff with "has" and "also", etc.)

  • Has adequate well rounded stats as it has a good Attack stat, usable Speed tier, reasonable bulk, and a moderate Special Attack I'm not super sold on this point; if anything, I'd probably say it's stats are decent at best. Nothing over 100 is pretty meh, and it usually relies on resisting opposing attacks to deal with strong wallbreakers, and hitting the foe super effectively to do good damage.
  • Has an interesting offensive movepool which makes it one of the best users of Focus Punch in PU while also having access to great special moves while lacking many useful physical moves which is unfitting in comparison to its stats What's interesting about its movepool? I would probably scrap that mention unless there's something remarkable about it (loads of coverage, utility, etc.)
I'd definitely mention its SubToxic set here, and how it annoys common answers such as Lanturn. Remember to change these to proper sentences, too, specifically not starting the point off with "Has."

[SET]
name: Special Attacker Perhaps this should be renamed to SubToxic, as Special Attacker could give the impression of some sort of All-Out Attacker set.

  • Toxic allows Poliwrath to cripple Pokemon that check it or any Pokemon generally such as Gastrodon and Gourgiest-XL to deplete their longevity and allow them to become vulnerable to Focus Punch or Poliwrath's teammates
  • Encore can be used alternatively to target slower Pokemon that may not be deterred by Toxic and use the opportunity to set up Substitute much safer thanks to locking the target in a resisted or immune move What move would Encore be used over?

  • Leftovers and Water Absorb are Poliwrath's only means of recovery which prevents it from being worn down as easily while also giving it comfortability in switching into Water-type moves Water-type moves from which Pokemon?

  • Poliwrath's 160 Spe EVs allow it to have a moderate speed tier which allows it to outspeed Pokemon it can check such as Aurorus
I'd mention the Speed EVs before the HP, because the HP EVs are a dump, while the Speed achieves something specific. I'd explicitly state that the Speed is specifically for Aurorus. In my opinion, the way it's currently worded kinda sounds like Poliwrath is just running some random amount of speed that happens to outspeed Aurorus.

Usage Tips
========

  • Poliwrath should find safe opportunities to set up Substitute so that it can deal great damage or annoy stuff with Toxic without taking much back or prevent itself from being worn down by status or Leech Seed, such opportunities include switching into Water-type moves and healing from Pokemon it takes no damage from otherwise such as Gastrodon
  • Toxic should be used mainly on Pokemon on the switch to cripple their longevity and render them vulnerable to Poliwrath and its teammates later in the game Any specific Pokemon?
  • Poliwrath should avoid status moves such as Toxic and Taunt as it cripples its longevity and ability to use the second half of its moveset, respectively, it is also significantly worn down by Toxic and its Leftovers cannot atone for it I'm not certain about the Taunt mention, given that Poliwrath can still function without SubToxic.
  • Poliwrath could sham the SubPunch set and surprise physically bulky Pokemon with powerful special attacks to KO them or throw them off guard and use the opportunity to setup Substitute if they switch Might be a bit difficult to do that since when Poliwrath uses Substitrue it's unclear which variant it is, so I'm a bit skeptic on this point. I'm pretty sure special variants are more common anyways, so it'd probably be the other way around, SubPunch surprising special checks.
  • Coverage moves wear down Poliwrath rather easily due to its lack of great recovery options therefore it should be cautious when switching in or dealing with Pokemon it checks Switching into stuff like hazards and regular attacks, not just coverage, can also wear it down.
Team Options
========

  • Speaking of abilities to remove entry hazards, Togetic and Hitmonchan prove to be good teammates as they can remove entry hazards that wear down Poliwrath while entry hazard setters such as Regirock and Crustle can aid Poliwrath in its offensive endeavor Replace the Togetic mention, it's just not good
  • Specially bulky Pokemon, especially those that resist Poliwrath's moves such as Musharna and Clefairy should be taken care of by Pokemon such as Absol and Aggron which make great teammates as they can check Musharana and Clefairy and other specially bulk Pokemon with powerful physical attacks
Talk about Flying- and Electric-type checks. Sweepers also appreciate Poliwrath wearing down the foe.

Moves
========

It also allows it to be protected from status moves and Leech Seed and grants it an advantage against checks if they switch in on Poliwrath if Substitute is up as they may be threatened by Focus Punch
  • Toxic can be used to wear down opposing Pokemon, especially its checks such as Gourgiest and Grandbull (more of a GP thing but Granbull is misspelt), that switch into Poliwrath and is best used when being protected by Substitute or on Pokemon on the switch. Toxic can also cripple the longevity of setup sweepers such as Lilligant and leave them vulnerable to Focus Punch or Poliwrath's teammates
Set Details
========

  • Poliwrath's EV investments give it sufficient bulk, Attack, and a rather moderate Speed tier so it can tank and hit harder while outspeeding at least some of its checks such as Aurorus Same deal here with the wording on the Speed EVs.
  • Leftovers and Water Absorb are the preferred item and ability as they are Poliwrath's only methods of recovery and moderately reliable as this means Poliwrath can avoid being worn down as quickly with Leftovers intact while also being able to comfortably switch into predicted Water-type moves to heal although it has to be wary of coverage moves Name some Pokemon that might use Water-type moves.
  • An Adamant nature further boosts Poliwrath's ability to deal a lot of damage with its already good Attack stat and EV investments

Usage Tips
========

  • Poliwrath should take advantage of situations such as switching into a Pokemon it takes no damage from such as a Water-type like Carracosta I would broaden this outside of just Water-types and then setting up Substitute to use Focus Punch successfully each time
  • Poliwrath should use Toxic on Pokemon that check it on the switch so that they can be worn down and eliminated quickly, Toxic can generally be used on any Pokemon that is crippled by it to wear them down if Poliwrath has the chance to do so
  • Since Substitute takes Poliwrath's HP away, it is easily worn down with Leftovers unable to compensate fully for the HP loss, which means Poliwrath should find possibilities to switch into Water-type moves to heal thanks to its ability, but needs to be careful of super effective coverage
Maybe mention that this set takes advantage of checks to the special set such as Lanturn and Eelektross.

Team Options
========

  • VoltTurn support from the likes of Eelektross and Mesprit help Poliwrath obtain safer opportunities to set up Substitute and start sweeping with Focus Punch, these two also check Grass-types as well
  • Entry hazard support in terms of setting and removing is appreciated as it helps Poliwrath KO Pokemon with Focus Punch easier while also preventing it from being worn down more easily, Pokemon that can set entry hazards include Aggron and Leavanny, who also check Fairy- and Grass-types, respectively; and Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and the aforementioned Skuntank Kinda eh on Leavannny, it's not that great and idk if Poliwrath is a great candidate for Sticky Web.
Talk more about Flying-, Psychic-, Grass, and Electric-type checks. This section is a bit bare, so some points from the special set could be carried over, with some slight rewording to adapt to the physical set.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • A Belly Drum set can be utilized alongside Swift Swim or Water Absorb to allow Poliwrath to become a win con to rain teams, it also acts a lure to Ferroseed as it is now able to take it out with relative ease thanks to an insane boost in Attack with powerful STAB moves I wouldn't say it lures Ferroseed. Instead, say that Poliwrath beats something that would otherwise be troublesome for rain.
  • A Physically Defensive set can also be considered as an alternative as the combination of RestTalk, Poliwrath's adequate bulk, and Scald and Circle Throw allow it to become a more defensively orientated Pokemon that can wear down its checks much efficiently for its teammates rather than take them out by itself Mention that it competes closely with Throh, and that Throh is usually the preferred choice.
A point about how Life Orb increases its damage output a lot more but decreases its longevity. Choice Specs, too, except the point about longevity is instead about how exploitable its moves are.

Checks and Counters
=================== There should be a space between this line and the line about Grass-types.
Ice Beam from AoA variants are also scary.

Specify that the special and physical set dislike different walls, but also take advantage of physical/special walls, respectively.

Maybe a point about Electric- and Flying-types? Maybe Psychic-types, too, as well as chip damage from Spikes, Toxic, etc.

Ok, so I've been talking to the other QC members and we're actually kinda unsure about what we want to do about the Poliwrath sets; we do want to change them though. I will get back to you ASAP about this.

Hey bud, sorry to do this but the QC team has decided to give Poliwrath a total set revamp; this will require it to go back in WIP and then start again from QC 0/3. If you don't want to take the new version and wish to pass this back then I fully understand as this revamp will be a large task. If you do wish to continue, here are the new and updated sets:

Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 84 SpA / 172 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Focus Blast
- Scald
- Protect / Vacuum Wave / Ice Beam
- Toxic

This will be the first set, with Substitute mentioned in moves. Speed EVs allow it to creep Jolly Aggron by one point.

Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Circle Throw
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

This will be the new second set, nothing extra in moves.

Feel free to tag me once you've implemented all of this or if you wish to drop it, and I will either QC it ASAP or put it back up for reservation. Thanks n_n

I'll think I'll drop this then yogi. I'm not too familiar with the new sets and I believe if this is back up for reservation it can be done more quickly and efficiently. Thanks for understanding n_n
